I took this train a few years back and even though I only took it as far as San Jose, it was a great trip. Sure, flying is quicker, but there's something to be said for being able to sit back and relax as the scenery rolls by
100%. Just did a trip to the Anaheim area doing a flight and public transit on the way down and Amtrak on the way back. I felt way more refreshed and chill on the train back despite taking longer. I only got a touch restless when night fell with no more cool scenery to see and the "are we there yet of the last 1h30" starts to happen.
My wife and I flew to Chicago 2 years ago, spent 3 days there and then took AMTRAK from Chicago to Seattle. Spent a week around Seattle and then took the Star liner back to LA from Seattle it was an amazing trip. Had the tracks not been washed out, we could have made all the way back to San Diego it was so much fun.
This was such a treat. I am from San Luis Obispo county but living internationally and road the surfliner back and forth between San Diego to visit my family and SLO. I recognized where all your shots were taken on that leg of the trip, it was such a nostalgic flashback. I may try this train next time
Road Amtrak from Union station to Escondido California when I bought my motorcycle. Still one of my favorite journey’s. I remember getting into the rail zone, it was my first train ride as an adult, and now I wish I could travel by train only. That day was special because I got to watch the ocean, have internet, relax and take it all in and then I got to ride the coast back up in my Motorcyle. A favorite memory for sure.
Fab. A girlfriend and myself did the reverse trip a few years ago. We had a bunk room, not good for mature ladies, but so much fun. Staff, food and everything about our train trip, was the absolute highlight of our USA trip. Would do it again in a heartbeat. More train travel trips please.
I've been on the coast Starlight a couple of times starting from my home in San Diego; the furthest North I've ever been however was Sacramento. I loved every moment. I booked a roomette both times since I was traveling as a single girl, and both of my trips were so very memorable. Both were pre-covid, so I got the full Coast Starlight experience. I wish the two of you many more wonderful memories on America's railways!
Jeb, being both an airline employee of 33 years and train enthusiast I have really come to enjoy watching your videos more than ever before. I’m so glad you’ve been doing some Amtrak videos. I actually find myself agreeing with a lot of your comments regarding rail travel. Thank you for putting out such great videos. Also I thought Suzanne’s comment about the prunes and restroom in the room to be hilarious.
Very much enjoying seeing this and your other train videos. Seeing these has re-sparked my love for train travel. In my 70s now, I cannot go sightseeing as easily as I once could for hiking, camping, attractions, etc. Trains offer a great option to ride and see views sitting down or even while laying down. All while extending the day's and night's adventures. Well now, you got me thinking a train VACAY is a great option!
I live in San Luis Obispo and we've taken the train to Santa Barbara and San Diego with our children. Those routes were fun but familiar scenery for us as we commute alongside the tracks. This video has convinced me to take the train to Seattle as a new experience and cheap/relaxing way to spend a couple days.
As a resident of Paso Robles, i’m glad you featured the amazing Cuesta Pass! I’m glad you enjoyed your time in San Luis Obispo! Come back soon, fly into SBP, it has an absolutely beautiful terminal that I know you’ll love! So sad I missed the chance to see you pass through on the train :(
LOVE all your rail trips. I am a lifelong train travel lover, starting when I was three. My dad gave me a toy train set when I was about five. He unfortunately would never know how much I loved that little set with its tracks, the cars, the caboose, and the engine and how I’ve adored real trains the rest of my life.
Random Fun Fact: On September 20th, 1959, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev is aboard a train that makes a stop at the San Luis Obispo station. The Premier had complained to the American Ambassador to the UN, Henry Cabot Lodge (also his tour guide) that he hadn't mingled with every day Americans several days into his trip of the United States. The Premier was also miffed from his experience in Los Angeles days prior (including a denial to visit Disneyland.) It was his stop in San Luis Obispo that ultimately changed the course of that trip for the better. I believe that the train Premier Khrushchev was on was a precursor to today's Coast Starlight... Just a bit of nerdy useless information I figured I would share! :D Love the videos Jeb and Suzanne!
I made that trip from the SF Bay Area to LA on the Coast Starlight in the spring when all the hills are green in California. I have great memories of the section of the central coast around San Luis Obispo. Stunning scenery.
I never knew of this option. Thanks for sharing, I've wanted to view the CA coastline, but could never drive the route scary heights, cliff drops 😅. I will try Amtrack now.

Totally on board (pun intended!) with the "rail zone". I get that too, usually within a few minutes of getting underway. It's that peaceful "I have arrived, now I can relax" feeling, bcos rail travel forces you to slow down, often unplug (due to spotty reception) and be. Am really enjoying how positive you guys are - a refreshing change to many other current vlogs
I don't know how this came across my feed but I'm glad it did 😊. Thank you for taking us on this adventure. You guys are great this makes me wanna book a trip to experience this type of adventure! Thank you! 😁 🙌
I took the Starlight from San Jose to Simi Valley earlier this year. One of my favorite experiences ever! One of these days I think I’ll do the whole thing from Los Angeles to Seattle.
Oregon resident here, been to Crater lake a couple times now and it is just jaw dropping, the immense scale of it is incredible and it takes you a step back.. It's definitely a go to place, I love Oregon
I agree! That said, for people who are scared of heights, it may be better to travel the ring road around the lake clockwise, that way, you're on the inside lane of the road.
The Coast Starlight is an excellent route to travel. Suzanne and Jeb this is probably your best rail video to date. Really enjoyed your interactions on this video. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Great video with one thing missing. The Jeb Score! I even watched the last part again thinking that I missed. I could never afford travel by rail which is why I am so grateful for being able to drive semi over the road for 14 years. I got to see a lot of this country through the windshield of my truck. While not as relaxing as chilling on a train, it is far better than never seeing it at all. I truly love your videos and your great attitude. Keep it up. 😎
I still remember my free rides from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano some 30 something years ago,or from Capistrano to Santa Ana ,we used to jump on trains, what memories
Hi, From the East Coast but lived in the West for 25 years before moving back. Traveled to Crater Lake twice. Camped once and once a day trip. Definitely worth a trip. If you get a chance, stay in the restored lodge there. The history and geology are spectacular and the blue of the water is nothing you have ever seen. Great hiking. Make sure to hike down to the water and take the boat tour on the lake as well.
My family and I visited Crater Lake back in 1966, after living 6 months in Seattle so my dad could work on the brand new 747 concept jet. They had invited engineers from all over, so we DROVE out there by car from Long Island, NY. Crater Lake was awe-inspiring and my biggest recollection was how cobalt-blue the water looked. Raleigh, NC
If you want coastal views, try the Pacific Surfliner down to San Diego. Service is currently reduced due to track work, but once it ramps back up again, it's right next to the beach.
Yep pretty much the best part of the route anyways Surfliner from SD to SLO but make sure your train does the whole trip, quite a lot uses bus service from Santa barbara to SLO and not the full train.
Nice video. Thanks for helping us reminisce our trip from LA to SEA 10 years ago! We took this path both ways and it was great. We went in coach but would have probably got a room for a multiple night trip. Brought a bunch of reading material but hardly touched it as we were pretty much glued to the window and views. Thanks for the inspiration to do some other train trips.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I recently had a dream that my husband and I went on our first train/sleeper ride and enjoyed scenery like what you've shown! You two are amazing! Love your smiles and energy! Glad I found your channel :)
Jeb and Suzanne, Wow another AWESOME video! These new Amtrack videos let people see and share places that we don't think about often. I remember that as a child, my grandmother said how beautiful Oregon is. ( in the days before video in the 1950s she rode Trailways to each state except Alaska) She would love your videos as much as I do. THANK YOU.
I've been on that line hundreds of times, literally. SLO local here! Let me now if you over come through here again, we have a charming little airport too. It's a shame you missed the Parlor Car days where sleeper class had an extra private car. The Pacific Surfliner mirrors the Coast Starlight route between LA and San Luis Obispo but it also travels southward to San Diego. You have to see the LA scenery with the right kind of eyes. Honestly, some of the really good graffiti in the spillways can be like a moving art gallery to me. Also, LA is a much more industrial city than it gets credit for being. It's definitely "ugly" but in that ugliness I can find it to be interesting and beautiful in its own way. No matter which direction you go, north or south, you'll soon be greeted by friendly and rustic coastlines so it's a very cool contrast. Cheers!
I had the pleasure of taking one trip when the Parlor Car was available to sleeper passengers. The was an optional wine and cheese tasting for a small fee. As we sipped wine and admired views, I felt like I was traveling during the golden age of railroading.
@@mariegarside8830 It's a shame they had to retire those cars, they were unique amongst all the Amtrak lines and gave sleeper passengers an exclusive place to go outside of their rooms. I hope they come back.
I did this route in 1980. We flew to Portland from Northern Ireland to stay with my father’s sister. We took this train from eugene to la to stay with family. On the way back we got off in Klamath falls and went to crater lake. 43 years later I still have great memories of spending my 9 th birthday in Disneyland.
I took the coast starlight back in 2016 from Santa Barbara to Davis, CA. Certainly saw some beautiful coastline and found it to be way better than taking a greyhound.
Great presentation. My wife and I would really like to do a trip like this. However, she has some physical mobility limitations. So we get to enjoy these trips by watching your well done videos. Thank you very much!
I did this journey the other way round and stopped in San Francisco for a week. I did it in 1994 and still remember it vividly. I'm british so the envy of my friends. It was amazing.
Beautiful America 🇺🇸. It will be 30 years in a few days since I moved to America. I've traveled the world, most recently to Italy and Japan, but I have to say America is by far the best place on earth.
Flew down to Anaheim from Oakland to take in a couple of Yankee games with my son this summer. 16:37 Took the Coast Starlight back and was a great 13 hours. I was a little concerned , as I was on my own , to be in a communal dining situation but it was actually a wonderful time as you quickly get into a conversation on where you are from and where you are going, and why.
We were lucky enough to take a memorable round trip from LA to San Antonio in the disabled bedroom on the lower level. In the dining room we were expected to share a table with someone else, which we enjoyed since it made the trip a sociable experience. I love to watch your videos as they not only bring back great memories of our trip, but they also give us a vicarious trip with you.
I loved the part you tried everything that could be done inside the room! Hahaha. Great video as always, lots of information, quality footage and kind and funny people like you two guys. Greetings from Argentina! 🇦🇷🇦🇷
an incredible video as always!! agree that the scenery isn't always 100% magnificent, but i think it's also a unique and important part of taking a journey on amtrak. those are the parts of our country's landscape, outside of mountains and valleys and all the pretty things, that also tell a story. beautiful and interesting stories in their own way. trying to plan an 'all across the country without planes' trip for sometime later in 2023 and i'm definitely adding this one to my list!
I just want to say that I love your videos. I was diagnosed with MS last year and my dreams of traveling seemed dashed. I see that I might be able to enjoy one of these journeys and still see some of the wonders of the world.

@kippywylie where do you live?
@@DehydratedNurse Washington State
I've done most of this trip several times because I live on the line in Oregon. It's a beautiful trip with gorgeous sunsets.
Ok. I’m going to put this trip on my 2023 list. The views are spectacular. Ppl talk mess about Cali, but I LOOOOVE it here.
I may try this train next time
Traveling buddy?😊
Glad you proved to the universe that the west coast is the best coast! From Seattle area here!!!
I've ridden from Ventura to Santa Barbara numerous times and it never gets old!
I was very happy to come across this video I live in southern California my Son just moved to Portland Oregon where he's never been before, we haven't had a chance to visit yet, I appreciated seeing the Beautiful Scenery definetly a trip we hope to take Thank you So Much for posting😊
Thanks for the video upload it was really nice to see on you tube hopefully soon in person.
Lived in Oregon for 39 years, from Cali to K Falls is the Siskiyou range, the Cascades are further north. I rode Amtrak from Salem to Seattlemultiple times a year from ‘93 to 2011. And, loved every trip.
Our one and only train trip was on this route from Portland to LA and back again. This is a stunning trip and it makes me want so much to do it again.
Love Jeb's excitement... So genuine.. The biggest smile.. Warms my heart... Suzanne, you're cool as well..❤
I could to the Coast Starlight over and over. ❤
I’m envious of your guys’ travels together. It’s a beautiful thing. Wish I had that.
i am a train conductor and this is really exciting to see! thank you very much for making this:)
I've done that trip many times and it's always wonderful. Friends ask me why I just don't fly. What they'll never understand is the the journey is the destination.
How much is it?
@@benluna-vasquez3718 It depends on starting and end points, as well as couch, business, or First Class. The starting price is $99 couch, but could go to over $600 for first class.
@@benluna-vasquez3718 looking up fares for the room they have here, a weekend in September, from LAX to Seattle, and it’s showing as $1,776. There is a roomette with no shower (shared showers) for $846. A weekday in October is showing the room as $1,402 and the roomette as $846.
Which part is scary? I heard you are high in the mountains. And it's a straight drop lol. Is that true?
@@quintonmiller8266 I can't recall any scary part, nor is there any sharp drop off.
the amtrak route from Chicago to Emeryville during winter is also stunning, going thru the snow capped sierra mountains is amazing
I went on this journey to Santa Barbara once! Cant wait to do it again to Seattle!
Just met your darling daughter on the Coast Starlight and was telling her how your comments helped us so much on our trip down and back . Got two roomettes and wonderful sleep with the rocking motion. Talked to s couple who had the bedroom and they didn't get the same.easy sleep with the beds facing the sides. Also loved the burger and steak meals and the scenery and was great. Truly a wonderful trip, thanks so much for all the tips.
So glad you had a good trip! The Coast Starlight is incredibly scenic. Not sure who you met, though. We don’t have any kids!
Suzanne really brings an extra level of awesome to the videos
Totally on board (pun intended!) with the "rail zone". I get that too, usually within a few minutes of getting underway. It's that peaceful "I have arrived, now I can relax" feeling, bcos rail travel forces you to slow down, often unplug (due to spotty reception) and be.
Am really enjoying how positive you guys are - a refreshing change to many other current vlogs
I absolutely LOVE Mount Shasta! Whenever I go to northern California, I make a point to go up on the mountain! Thank you for sharing
I don't know how this came across my feed but I'm glad it did 😊. Thank you for taking us on this adventure. You guys are great this makes me wanna book a trip to experience this type of adventure! Thank you! 😁 🙌
I did this exact trip in 2010. One of the best experiences in my life!
The CALIFORNIA coast , it’s like that little part of the world that God created with so much love.
The Coast Starlight is a really fun train!
Thank you for sharing this incredible journey with us. It looks so fun and is now on my bucket list because of your amazing video!!
The Coast Starlight is an excellent route to travel. Suzanne and Jeb this is probably your best rail video to date. Really enjoyed your interactions on this video. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Ive done this a few times. This is great
I remember when I was a toddler, 65 now, going with my mother to Grand Central to pick up my grandmother. 😊
Hi,
From the East Coast but lived in the West for 25 years before moving back.
The Pacific Surfliner runs over the same track that they took from LA to San Luis Obispo, just missed the part from LA to San Diego.
Yep pretty much the best part of the route anyways Surfliner from SD to SLO but make sure your train does the whole trip, quite a lot uses bus service from Santa barbara to SLO and not the full train.
I did the LA to SD run this year. Truly amazing!!
I’m sold.. I will definitely my next trip to the states try a train…
I really enjoy Jebs train reports and look forward to him travelling again. Keep up the good work Jeb.
WELCOME TO WASHINGTON STATE!!! You guys were about 5 hours from where I live!!!! Great blog!!!
THANK YOU.
You two are so lovely together
@@wizardmix The last I read about the Parlor Car it was scrapped. Sad we lost a piece of history.
Thank you for taking us with you on this trip. Most enjoyable. 👍🏼
Great presentation. My wife and I would really like to do a trip like this. However, she has some physical mobility limitations. So we get to enjoy these trips by watching your well done videos. Thank you very much!
The Handicap room has ample room even for wheelchair, and meal service. ( retired Amtrak)
There is lower level seating and near restrooms.
I did this journey the other way round and stopped in San Francisco for a week. I did it in 1994 and still remember it vividly. I'm british so the envy of my friends. It was amazing.
Hi! The West Coast IS the best coast! The trip from San Diego to L.A. is nice too. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
Beautiful America 🇺🇸. It will be 30 years in a few days since I moved to America. I've traveled the world, most recently to Italy and Japan, but I have to say America is by far the best place on earth.
I've taken this route multiple times, most recently this last June. It really is a lovely trip, and isn't too bad even in coach!
Thanks!
Thank you!!
an incredible video as always!!
agree that the scenery isn't always 100% magnificent, but i think it's also a unique and important part of taking a journey on amtrak. those are the parts of our country's landscape, outside of mountains and valleys and all the pretty things, that also tell a story. beautiful and interesting stories in their own way. trying to plan an 'all across the country without planes' trip for sometime later in 2023 and i'm definitely adding this one to my list!
I just want to say that I love your videos. I was diagnosed with MS last year and my dreams of traveling seemed dashed. I see that I might be able to enjoy one of these journeys and still see some of the wonders of the world.
Thanks for coming along! Best wishes for improved health!
I took this train from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara & it was wonderful! I really enjoyed it too
