  • When a friend of mine saw that I had created some wooden rustic American Flags, he approached me with the idea of a Concealment Coffee table with the theme of my rustic American Flag. Another friend overheard the conversation and he decided he couldn't be left out and wanted one too.

    How to do it yourself:
    I'll try my best to give the materials and measurements if you're interested in making one of these yourself.
    1.The Flag top: The flag top measures 48"x26" and is made mostly of 1x6 material. Each stripe is made of a 2" wide strip that is 48" Long. I glued the stipes to a panel of 1/4" material. And the union was made from a board that was a 21/32" glued panel. All of this was purchased at the Home Depot. There were some cutoffs from the 1x6's that I think I used as the border after the flag ends were trimmed with the circular saw. I just glued and pin nailed in the boarder with 1 1/4" 16 gauge nails. The Union stencil acted as my template for the dimensions of the Union rectangle. I purchased a multi size pack of union stencils on Amazon. This one was the biggest in the pack and measured roughly 20" x 14".
    2. The Box: The Box was made of 2x6's and 3/4" plywood for the bottom. I mentioned the bottom dimensions in the video and I think it was 21"x 42". For the 2x6 sides, it doesn't matter which side overlaps the other but I think I was the long side match the 42" so the short side would add the 3" in width from the butted other sides to be 24". Maybe I got that backwards...but it doesn't matter. I used the R3 pocket hold jig by Kregg to drill the pocket holes in the bottom. I set the jig and the bit to 3/4" to match the material and used 1 1/4" pocket hole screws. Be sure to keep the bottom flush with the frame while screwing the pocket holes. A clamp helps keep it from sagging. I used 2 1/2" screws for the butt joints on the fame of the box. I drilled pilot holes to prevent splitting.
    3. The legs: The legs were simple 2x6's cut to 20". Once, cut to size, I I set my table saw to 45 degrees and mitered one side of each board. I cut a the groove for the spline with 1/4" spiral upcut bit on my router table. I bought the upcut bit on amazon. Once, glued and splined, I pinned them with 2" 16 gauge pin nails to hold while the glue dried. I attached the box to the legs from the inside of the box using 2 1/2 " screws again. I made sure to glue the legs on also.
    4. The Bottom shelf: The rails for the bottom shelf were 2x2s from the Home depot. The shelf pieces were 1x6's. I set my table saw to 3/4" to cut the rabbet. I passed it on two sides. Had to adjust it to cut it the rest of the way. The lengths of the 2x2 were just a mirror of the box sides. I screwed the rails on with 1 1/4" screwsand then glued and pinned the shelf boards independently of each other.
    Stains: I used Varathane Special Walnut for the body and Dark Walnut for the bottom shelf and top border. The Flag has Barn Red, Worn Navy and Antique White. The first responder flag used Espresso but I would recommend Ebony if you want it black. You could even use an acrylic paint over the Ebony if you want a true black. You can get all these stains from the Home Depot.
    union stencils kit
    amzn.to/3BJMcS6
    I've found this to be the best union stencils kits. it's hard to find the right size for a 48 inch flag but this kit had what you need.
    Hope this helps.

    Excellent video! Just a quick question, for the backer board on the flag, did you use 1/4 plywood? And if so, did you customize the border around the flag to cover both the backer board and the flag on the edges? Thanks!

    • @wooddoofus
      @wooddoofus  2 года назад

      Yes. Backer board is in the 1/4 inch category although it's most likely thinner than a true quarter inch. But either way, I did customize the edge trim to cover both the flag edge and the backer edge. Thanks for watching!

    Outside Dimensions are 52”x 22" standing 19" off the ground.
    Inside dimensions are 46"x19"x4.5".
    Comes with Biometric Lock that can save up to 20 finger prints. Unit includes customizable 1" kaizen foam. Comes with USB cord if the battery Dies.
    Cost me $699.00
    OK now back to watching the Super Bowl.

      @wooddoofus  2 года назад +1

      You're right. It's not safe from theft but it isn't designed to be and I I didn't claim it was. No wooden concealment item out there with any type of lock is going to keep someone from giving it a slight tug or just taking the whole thing and sawing it open. This is not a safe. The lock is designed to deter nosy people and curious children. I would never have this around my kids if it had something dangerous in it but I made this for friends that have no kids and don't get kid visitors. All other risks are on them.
