Try clamping the wood pieces together with out gluing. Then carve while clamped. Paint or stain individual slats. Then glue together. Reduces taping time and messy paint/stain bleed

As always, great job Max. Wavy flags are one of the hardest to do. You make it look easy. The edges puts the flag a step higher than others I've seen. Great touch. Your shading with the torch added a great touch as well. Something that works for me to keep mistakes and paint bleed to a minimum: When you have the first stripes taped (in this you taped the white first), after you stained the red stripes and it dries, you can spray on one or two light coats of seal. Once that dries, change up the taping (take off the tape on the white stripes, put tape on red strips) then stain the white stripes. If any stain bleeds, it shouldn't stain over the red before you can wipe it off (seal coat should stop the stain). This method works even better for staining stars. Blue stain for union, one or two coats of seal, then carve out the stars. Start staining stars white. Any white that gets on the blue cleans up quick and easy with a wipe of a rag.

Thank you for sharing the ways that you have learned by trial and era that will give most of us the opportunity to create an almost unflawed art piece the first go around. At a minimum. This takes a long time. 1 per day? $30 in wood, glue, stain, sealer, saw blade wear and tear, electricity, tape etc. so unless you're cool with $10/hr. At least $200. Plus, it takes time to get this good

I've done pretty good selling flags over the past few years. I did a thin edge one like this a few years ago. I always considered it my flag cause it took 3 years to sell. I had it listed for 100 more than my normal flags. A few friends told me it was cool but not necessarily worth the extra money. Now that it's gone I miss it cause I really liked it.

Max F - very nice! I have also made many for sale, folks really love them. The modified Betsy Ross (13 stars in a circle with '1776' in the center of the stars) also looks very nice. One suggestion though.... The waves in a flag always originate in the upper corner of the hoist side (that is the upper corner of the blue field) and move towards the lower right. Never from the fly corner towards the lower left. Just has to do with where the flag is always fixed...the upper grommet on the hoist side. Cheers, John

Very nice work, i will try it on my own next vecation. 👍
You should panit/stain the back sides on the edges too, that would make a perfekt look.
For the glueing proces use baking paper as table cover. The most wood glues dont stick to it and you can often reuse the paper, because the glue will fall of, if it is totaly dry. Just do a dry run befor using a new gluetye for the first time.
    Keep on the good work!

  • @Jimc4007

Think this is my favorite flag you have done. That grinding disc while putting out a ton of dust really works well.

Very nice I might have to try this. I bet you can also carve those waves in with the table saw. You would need to make a little jig to hold it at the angle to ride against the fence. Then you clamp a strait edge (Make shift fence) at a 30 to 45 degree angle of the table saw blade. You raise the blade a 3/16 to 1/4 in above the table of saw and push the wood across the blade. You are basically using the saw blade as a large shaper. Then just raise the blade a bit more and make another pass. It sounds way more dangerous than it is. LOL Izzy swan ha a few videos on it and one he even makes a really nice jig that is far more advance than I am describing. But I have done it myself several times for projects that need coves. My dad was a wood worker cabinet maker and he shown me this trick 30 plus years ago. Izzy just took it to the next level. But you might play with it a little maybe it will work. Link below for Izzy's video. But really nice work. I have made a lot of nice things with 2x4's. It is cheap lumber. You just need to be a bit picky when buying them.
