Marciano would not accept defeat acording to his childhood friends. He would go out and play baseball with them. After the game they would all go home. Marciano decided staying out, improving speed, power, breathing, doing chin-ups in his backyard. But, he kept it to himself. When and if opportunity ever came, he would be ready. He made himself ready.

The man was a machine, quite possibly the best conditioned fighter ever, he had supreme stamina, endurance, heart, never stopped pressing the fight, always kept going even when being hit with everything his opponent could throw at him....only hot the canvas twice. His main fault was being a notoriously slow starter but even st that he would throw around 80 punches a round every round, opoonents where smothered in punches, arm bones broken, teeth sheered off at the hups, even one man in a ten day coma poor carmine Virgo. Of the 49 men he fought 16 where so badly beaten they retired early from boxing...and he remains the legend he deserves to be.. a true gent out of the ring and a monster in it....RIP Rocky....

What an inspiring story. Gonna have to books at my local libraries on him. Based on what you’re saying it goes with the modelo commercial quote of it doesn’t matter where you come from it’s what you’re made of. I think Enson Inoue put it best that everyone has that Yamatadoshi in them which translates to warrior spirit they just gotta find it within them.

I sometimes think we overstate his initial awkwardness and his diminutive stature and miss the fact that in some ways he definitely did have some incredible genetics. Somone once shared watching Rocky train on TV throwing rocks and stuff and his dad said that is the closest thing to a Neanderthal man I've ever seen. I think that may've been right. Sure, he was short, but his genetics were fantastic in other ways like a Neanderthal. Lou Duva said he couldn't get Rocky to rest. He had to just give up let him do it his way. Rocky is the only fighter I've ever seen who had pace, volume and power. Rocky was beating people with pace and power plus that insane dipping back crouch. I can't imagine the condition his legs had to be in. I wish a new generation would take a closer look at this guy. There's a lot more to him than the myths. He's one guy where his myth actually undersells how tremendous he really was.

Grossly undersized for a heavyweight, small hands, no reach, flat footed, and started boxing at 24 years old yet he became the champion and finished his career 49-0.
This is one of the greatest examples of hard work, grit, and determination.
It also reminds me of just how spoiled and soft our society has become. We rarely see men like this anymore. Sheer greatness.

Nice to see The Rock appreciated for something that cannot be taught--how to deal with adversity. However a few things you said are incorrect about the Charles fight when Rocky's nose was hanging off of his face. It did not go 15 rounds, it went 8. At the end of the 7th round, the injury was so bad the ref wanted to stop the fight, but told Rocky he would give him one more round before stopping the fight. Rocky did it for him with a brutal KO of Ezzard.

  • @mis-tur-tay-bur

Rocky's sole, primary preoccupation was getting the leverage to throw the hardest punch possible at all times. It determined how he moved, how he evaded, where he put his feet and how he handled being hit. That obsession with belting the other man as hard as possible meant he wasn't going to be deterred by irrelevancies such as pain. One thing he hated more than anything was missing his opponent. He said it sapped his energy. His fists craved contact and everything he did was structured around making that happen. That's why his fighting style was considered unique. David Tua used to fight the same way. He looked different, but he had exactly the same preoccupation with simply hitting his opponent as hard as possible, as often as possible, until he fell. And he was never once hurt.

During the deepest era in light heavyweight history Gold Medalist Undisputed Undefeated HOF ATG GOAT Michael Spinks beat Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Dwight Muhammad Qawi and knocked out Yaqui Lopes and Marvin Johnson, which was not easy to do in their primes. And he beat the real heavyweight champion to win the title, who was also undefeated. Michael Spinks is the most accomplished light heavyweight in history.
Light heavyweight Charles Lost (25) times and was KOd (7) times. Light heavyweight Moore Lost (23) times and was KOd (7) times. Then why is Charles and Moore ranked higher than Spinks at light heavyweight? Because they fought little Marciano which automatically makes them immortal, even though they Lost "FORTY-EIGHT" times and were "KTFO-FOURTEEN" times!

Southpaw Usyk is actually bigger than Ali. Joshua came in at 240 lbs, only an 18 lb weight advantage over a comfortable 222 lb Usyk who is 6' 3" with 78" reach.
    Holyfield was 6' 2.5" 218 lbs with 78" reach.
Michael Spinks was 6' 2.5" 208 lbs with 76" reach.
    Prime Clay/Ali was 6' 2.5" (passport) 212 lbs with 78" reach.
And of course we mustn't forget 5'10" 185 lb Marciano with his extraordinarily shortest-ever 67" flyweight reach.
    Shocking isn't it.
Those other small guys weren't so small after all.
They already had the natural height and reach so they were able to assimilate into the Heavyweight division with few problems.
On the other hand little 185 lb Marciano had some serious dwarfism problems going on with his reach. Simply put Marciano's bone structure was too short to assimilate effectively.

The Marciano Tapes #6 @3:40 Marciano confesses Carmine Vingo hit the back of his head on the plywood flooring. He said, "it so happened that Vingo hit his head on the flooring, and it sent him unconscious. He was paralyzed a little bit in his fingers and hands. There was a change in the ruling, from then on padding was put on the ring of the flooring." Rocky's manager Al Weill said the same thing in Marciano's biography 'Unbeaten', "Vingo hit his head on the flooring, then he went unconscious."
So after all this time it was the plywood flooring that partially paralyzed Vingo, not Marciano's punch. It's no wonder Vingo said, "I WAS SLAUGHTERED FOR A CROWD" --source: The Saturday Evening Post by Carmine Vingo as told by Seymour Shubin
Nobody knows how that particular ring in 1949 was actually constructed at that particular venue. Regardless of the flooring, Vingo "tooth-pick" Bingo was 6' 4" 189 lbs with an abysmal 38% KO's. A closer look at his eighteen opponents:

#17) Vingo 193 lbs vs Al Robinson 193 lbs CAREER 0 wins 5 losses with 0% KO's (F-level). Vingo actually fights a debuting amateur just before he faces Rocky. Why? This isn't even funny anymore.
#18) Vingo 189 lbs vs Rocky Marciano 180¼ lbs CAREER 49 wins 0 losses with 87.76% KO's (A-level). Vingo was completely outclassed and never had a chance from the get-go. I saw their Getty Museum pics and Marciano didn't have a single mark on his face, and his eyes were wide open and clear. What they did to Carmine was a travesty!
*THE WORST PREDETERMINED 16-2 BOXING RESUME OF ALL TIME
All this time i was mislead into believing that Vingo was this twenty year old superstar being prepped to become the next Heavyweight champ. Instead he was prepped for "SLAUGHTER JUST TO PLEASE A CROWD" --Carmine Vingo

Out of all the boxers in history why is little Rocky the only one that must to be defended through endless Quotes? He said "this," or he said, "that." Quote after Quote after endless Quotes. Why? Because y'all CANNOT defend him with his resume alone. Why? Because his best opponents were middleweights and light heavyweights moonlighting as Heavyweights.
The funniest one is Don Turner saying, "Marciano could beat both Klitschko brothers at the same time in the same round," and of course Marciano fans literally believes it as truth.
Just because Ali said, "Rocky was like a bull and would be difficult to knock out," does that make it true?
Holmes said, "Rocky couldn't carry his jockstrap," does that make it true?
Foreman recently listed his own top 10 greatest Heavyweights yet he didn't even include himself. It's called being humble, creating an image. Quotes are mere speculations or showing ones respect.
Ali's famous speech after beating Foreman:
      "EVERYBODY STOP TALKING NOW"
"I TOLD Y'ALL I WAS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME"
"I TOLD Y'ALL I'M STILL THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME"
( Does that sound like the GOAT is conceding to tiny dwarfism-arms? )
Y'all Rocky lovers gotta twist Ali's words, Don Turners words, everybody's words inorder to fit your agendas.
Find ONE poll that has Marciano ranked higher than Ali?
Don't need Quotes to protect Ali because his resume speaks for itself.
Don't need Quotes to protect Lewis because his resume speaks for itself.
Don't need Quotes to protect Wladimir because his resumes speaks for itself.
On the other hand little Marciano's little resume needs serious help, hence all the endless Quotes to try to protect him even though it's in vain.

BoxRec has officially listed these Rocky Marciano opponents as middleweights and light heavyweights:
    Eddie Ross - division "Middleweight"
    Harry Bilazarian - division "Middleweight"
Ezzard Charles - division "Light heavy"
Archie Moore - division "Light heavy"
Harry Matthews - division "Light heavy"
Harry Haft - division "Light heavy"
Ted Lowry - division "Light heavy"
Willis Applegate - division "Light heavy"
Bob Jefferson - division "Light heavy"
Shouldn't one have to beat credible Heavyweight opponents to be respected as a legitimate Heavyweight champion?
Did the Klitschko brothers have the luxury of fightin middleweights and light heavyweights? Does King Fury have the luxury of fightin middleweights and light heavyweights?
Marciano's extra-small era was a huge contributing factor towards the "cruiserweight" division being created. There comes a point the size disparity becomes a bridge too far even for outstanding smaller boxers.
Little Rocky was only 31 when he up-n "QUIT" during his prime. He only fought a measly 7 years while everyone else was fightin 20 years!!! Many heavyweights coulda retired undefeated if they'd-a "QUIT" after only 7 years!!! Had he kept fightin he woulda faced the likes of Patterson, Machen, Johansson, Folley, Liston, Jones, Clay, Terrell, Cleveland and Chuvalo just to name a few.
What Marciano did to his family is unforgivable. During his retirement speech and his appearance on the Ed Sullivan show he said, "I want to spend more time with my family." That's not True. It was all a lie. He immediately abandoned his kids and wife to sleep with thousands then left them penniless--@ 1993/08/23 THE ROCK - Sports Illustrated Vault | SI

For a long time (decades) I have been researching, watching videos, reading experts, comments from fans and enthusiasts of combat sports and martial arts, I was particularly interested in boxing. I believe (I hope I'm wrong, as it would be terrible if it were true) that Rocky Marciano is overestimated by the vast majority of people, all the qualities attributed to Marciano, other boxers also had and are not recognized. Not even half of the praise given to Marciano is attributed to fighters such as: Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Joe Frazier ,George Foreman,Max Baer,Max Schmeling,Lennox Lewis,Larry Holmes, Klitschko brothers and even Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield,Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson, many of those I mentioned had physical, moral and psychological qualities.Rocky Marciano was not the Superman neither inside nor outside. I think you are wrong in saying that many people do not have the moral and psychological qualities that Rocky Marciano had, I know many people, incredible human beings who are kind, resilient, courageous and determined, some are known , most are anonymous, and don't have 1% of the fame, money, status that Rocky had and still has. I hope that people are recognized, admired and analyzed fairly especially boxing athletes, who are incredible, without caring with ethnicity, nationality, skin color, religion or sexual orientation, etc. Giving credit to people who don't have it is unfair and dishonest, you take away the value of the fighter himself, of other good fighters and you also devalue yourself as a human being.

Carmine Vingo - 16 wins 2 losses with 38% KOs looks good until you see ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents.
Don Cockell - 66 wins 14 losses with 46% KOs looks okay until you see the majority of his career was at middleweight and light heavyweight. By the time he faced Marciano he was suffering from severe glandular disorders that wreaked havoc with his physique. He was sallow-skinned, fat, and had a nasty boil on his neck.
Harry Matthews - 90 wins 7 losses with 58% KOs is a good B-level resume. Problem is he was a natural middleweight moonlighting at light heavyweight. Matthews weighed 130 lbs vs. Joey Parks who also weighed 130. I thought this was the Heavyweight division? Shouldn't one have to beat credible Heavyweight opponents to be respected as a legitimate Heavyweight champion?
Even Marciano's best 3 opponents; Walcott-Charles-Moore lost (68) times and were KO'd (20) times. Marciano never faced an elite fighter in his prime. Name one, just one prime elite fighter Marciano beat? Failing to name even one proves my comment rings true. Show me any respected boxing publication or analyst that claims Walcott Charles Moore were in their prime when they fought Marciano?

Marciano fanboys describe him as being so fierce that he basically killed all 49 of his opponents in the ring. Y'all have these Rocky vids so saturated with so much exaggerated hyperbolic nonsense that it's laughable.
"Little Marciano was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. The Italian infant of Krypton was Superman. He broke 1,247 bones, knocked out 4,679 teeth, and ruptured 792 blood vessels. I also know for a fact that little Rocky is god , because when he walked the earth shook."
Don't be so gullible, Marciano only fed on middleweights and light heavyweights moonlighting as Heavyweights.
If Marciano was so Powerful why didn't he ever break any bones? He never broke one rib, one nose, one eye-socket, one jaw or detached one retina. Exactly who's bones did he break? WAITING---TIC--TOC--TIC--TOC ..... ""NOBODY""!!!! ""ZERO""!!!!
Roland LaStarza with all his supposed "Broken Bones" and "Ruptured Blood Vessels" only had minor surgery, what's the big deal? Y'all act as if both his arms were decapitated. LaStarza simply had tiny miniscule bone-chips removed from his elbow just like David Tua did after his fight with Ibeabuchi. It's a common boxing injury because everyone blocks punches using their forearms and elbows. When Roland left boxing he went on to a very lucrative TV acting career.
*(Besides LaStarza said, "I already had elbow problems before i even fought Marciano." I have the article).
Here's the newspaper article about Layne's tooth: "Rex Layne lost a left upper tooth..the tooth broke at the gums when Marciano caught the Utahn in the mouth with a full right hand. Layne was taken immediately after the fight to a New York dentist to have the teeth X-rayed and also for treatment on a broken tooth." Layne's handlers said, "the tooth went out with the gumshield."
Rex only sustained "ONE" broken tooth! He fought Charles exactly 3 months later, so what's the big deal? Folks break their teeth all the time skateboarding or slippin-n-fallin on the ice.
"He punched out almost every tooth in Rex Lyne's mouth and sent his gum guard into the crowd. It take massive power to do that. If Layne was 6'6 240+ it wouldn't of made any difference" --written by Marciano Fanboy 12 years ago.. (exaggerated misinformation at it's finest).

All you guys posting that “little” Marciano never beat a true heavyweight need to watch a video on you tube wherein Muhammad Ali basically admitted he was very uncertain if he could have won and that maybe he (Ali) could have been knocked out by Rocky.
Keep in mind that Ali was still young Cassius Clay when he did the exhibition match with 45 year old Marciano. He said that his arms were soar the next day and it hurt to even lift them given the power of the punches Marciano landed on his arms.
    But also know this:
Ali made these comments about Rocky years later after he fought everybody and only lost once to Frazier and once to Norton.
Marciano was a freak of nature. The power he generated in his punches was way beyond what a man of his size (5’10” and 188) would ever be expected to do.
And his ability to take long pain and keep coming was off the charts - as was his conditioning.

The reality is heart and determination can only get you so far when you're sorely lacking in the physical tools the other greats have. Americans love to glamorize the underdog who gets it done in spite of their limitation, just look at the success of Stallone and his Rocky movie franchise, the movie Rudy, Hoosiers, etc. It's interesting how people who experienced watching Marciano in real time don't hold him in the same high regard as folks later on in spite the multitude of great fighters who came on the scene after he quit. There's a lot of mythology with Marciano and a lot of selective memory about his career. He was brilliantly managed to preserve his undefeated record. It is also interesting how the same people who want to consider Rocky the greatest Heavyweight bcz he was undefeated are reluctant to consider Mayweather the greatest pound for pound. Why is that? It's just flat lazy to look at 49-0 and conclude that he must be the best ever. Based on that, then you MUST consider Mayweather the greatest pound for pound fighter of all-time since he's 50-0, right?

King Fury would keep little Rocky at arm's length and force him back whenever he felt crowded. He'd jab, turn and flummox him for as long as wanted, and if Fury felt so inclined, he'd walk him down Kronk style and grind out a stoppage. And none of this, "if he can't reach his head he'll go to the body", either. That's just bull****. Fury's lead would keep Marciano too far away as is. Rocky ain't gettin the opportunities to impose his workrate and definitely doesn't hit hard enough to stop him. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 5 or 6 jabs a round and win the round. Rocky's numbers may not lie, but numbers minus context can easily lead to distortion. So let's examine those 13 opponents (not in order) that he supposedly "Forced-into-Retirement" instantaneously:
#1) Amateur Lee Epperson - 0 wins 0 losses. Shameful to even count this as a "Forced-Retirement." Retired from what? He never even had a career. Epperson was probably 15 years old like Walcott & Moore were when they first started.
#2) Amateur Jimmy Weeks - 0 wins 0 losses. Embarrassing to count this as "Forced-Retirement." Probably another 15 year old.
#3) Amateur John Edwards - 1 win 1 loss. Y'all gonna count this as a "Forced Retirement" also?
#4) We factually know that ring-worn-n-washed Joe Louis only came back because the IRS-FORCED him to. As soon as IRS took Joe's purse for fightin Rocky he was finally outta there for good!!!
#5) Walcott only returned for Marciano-2 for another easy $250K. Walcott received the lions share both fights. Had Walcott continued fightin he would have only received a fraction of that. $250K back then is $2.6 million today. Rocky never "Forced-Retirement" upon Walcott,, he "QUIT"!!!
#6) Lee Savold age was 36 with 153 bouts. His manager, Bill Daily, asked referee Pete Tomasso to stop the uneven match at the end of the sixth round. "The will was there but not the body," said Daily. "I'm going to advise Lee to retire Tomorrow." Lee didn't even throw a punch, he just stood there like a heavy punching bag. Completely washed Savold was only there for his last Big-Paycheck!!!
#7) Humphrey "The-Bum" Jackson - 4 wins 2 losses with 28% KO's (D to F-level). Jackson never beat a winning fighter. It only took 0:34 seconds for Jackson to be KO'd in his first fight, and 1:28 in his last fight. The less said about "The-Bum" the better.
#8) Jimmy Evans - 18 wins 8 losses with 50% KO's looks okay until you see he fought 10 opponents with 10 fights or less. Evans weighed 178 lbs. Too many light heavyweights.
    #9) Harry Haft - 12 wins 8 losses with 35% KO's (D-level). Harry was only 5' 9" 174 lbs. I thought this was the Heavyweight division?
    #10) Gino Buonvino - 24 wins 15 losses with 10% KO's (D-level). Marciano fights Buonvino "TWICE", why?
#11) Eldridge Eatman - 22 wins 21 losses with 22% KO's (F-level). Marciano fought Eatman who had just lost 8 of his last 9 fights. Rocky's handlers were afraid to put him in with anyone decent after coming so close to losing against LaStarza. ("Eatman proved no opposition for Marciano", according to the Providence Journal, "Marciano hit Eatman with a right in the 3rd round, and Eatman went down though it didn't appear he was hit"--written by BoxRec.)--Eatman obviously took-a-dive.
#12) Pete Louthis was 32-13-5 with 35% KO's (F-level). Pete fought amateur Willie James with a 0-0-0 debut record only 2 fights before facing Marciano. Pete fought 10 amateurs with 0-0-0 debut records. For Pete's sake he also fought another 20 opponents that had 10 or less fights. Pete's profession was padding records.
#13) Carmine Vingo -- 16 wins 2 losses with 38% KO's looks good until you see ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents. There was a change in the ruling, from then on padding was put on the ring of the flooring."
So after all this time it was the plywood flooring that partially paralyzed Vingo, not Marciano's punch.
It appears little Rocky didn't "Force-Retire" any of these boxers. Overwhelming majority of his supposed 43 KO's were referees stopping his fights prematurely and homeless walk-ins takin dives and paddin records for $$$.

37 LaStarza opponents: We see their entire "CAREER" record, not a partial record. Seeing a boxers complete resume gives a more accurate evaluation how good, or how bad they are. Professional boxers can easily be evaluated using US school grades A, B, C, D, and F. Marciano 183 lbs 25-0 vs. LaStarza 187 lbs 37-0. Marciano would have knocked out any of the fighters today. His power and conditioning had no equal. Marciano was raised in an era where hard work was instilled at birth. Today's fighters fight for a Title after a dozen fights. Fighters back in the day had dozens of fights in one year. Over a hundred in a career.

Little Marciano didn't win all his fights. His first fight vs. LaStarza was officially called a draw! That is until the mafioso stepped in on Rocky's behalf. We do know factually that Ross, Eatman, and Louthis took-a-dive. Was it for $$$ or were they forced to protect themselves and their families from the same folks that protected Marciano?
"Amazing recovery by Eddie Ross after being KO'd by Rocky Marciano the previous day."-(word for word from BoxRec). (It was commonplace to take-dives and pad records during this era). That is correct, in less than 24 hours 170 lb Eddie Ross also fought 160 lb Billy Sparks who had 6 wins 11 losses. Ross also fought 10 amateurs with 0-0-0 debut records! These guys are middleweights fightin as Heavyweights. This division is beyond despicable.
Eldridge Eatman was 22-20-5 with an abysmal 22% KO's. "Eatman proved no opposition for Marciano", according to the Providence Journal, "Marciano hit Eatman with a right in the 3rd round, and Eatman went down after that, though it didn't appear he was hit." -(Eatman obviously took-a-dive). The last 9 fights Eatman had leading up to his fight with Marciano he went 1 win 8 losses. Shamefully disturbing.
Pete Louthis was 32-13-5 with an abysmal 35% KO's. Pete fought amateur Willie James with a 0-0-0 debut record only 2 fights before facing Marciano. Pete fought 10 amateurs with 0-0-0 debut records! For Pete's sake he also fought another 20 opponents that had 10 or less fights. Pete's profession was padding records. Marciano fought at least 25 different Pete's!
This isn't even professional boxing. It's more reminiscent to the Jack Dempsey days when they simply walked-in and took bouts for room and board. Pugilist negotiated payments to throw matches, while others "took a dive" merely to avoid injury and pick up an easy pay cheque.
I understand throwing matches also happened before Rocky's time and after Rocky's time. But the 1950s boxing era was the pinnacle for corruption and 100% monopolized. Padding records and taking dives didn't happen once a month, it was the daily norm. It factually happened and cannot ever be swept under the carpet.
Remember the National Prohibition of alcohol during the 20s and 30s. Italian Kingpins like Al Capone were able to rack in $100 million each year thanks to the overwhelming business opportunity of illegal booze.
The majority of extortion and loansharking criminal gangs were Italian. Lucky Luciano, Johnny Torrio, Al Capone, Vito Genovese, John Gotti, Carlo Gambino, thousands of bosses, underbosses and soldiers etc. It was all Sicilian.
The day after Rocco Marchegiano retired he immediately abandoned his kids and wife to sleep with thousands. He also started his loansharking business--(psychosis and other symptoms he suffered)--@ 1993/08/23 THE ROCK - Sports Illustrated Vault | SI
Marciano was killed flying to Des Moines to pick up $35 thousand. Problem was he knowingly flew during severe weather with an amateur pilot. Mr Greedy Infidel got what he deserved for what he did to his family.

Today people like Rocky and me don't have to be embarrassed or feel ashamed. When I came out it was like taking a huge weight off of my shoulders. But don't wait like I did, I have a wife and kid that I would never had if I had not succumbed to the pressure of trying to act normal. I love Margot, but I'm not in love with her, and she understands, we stay together for our daughter. All three of us share the much of the same clothes, make-up, and interests.
