One of my favorite stories about Rocky came from Archie Moore. After his fight with Marciano, Archie was asked when he realized he was in trouble. His response was “in the first round”. The interviewer mentioned that since Archie knocked Rocky down in the first round how could he know he was in trouble? Archie said, “I hit him harder than I ever hit any man, and he got up mad”.
@@kevinmoton7326 Archie Moore was still great and hadn't lost a thing at that point, he was fighting a great fight. He had 42 more fights after that one only losing 3 so he was definitely still a great fighter.
@@kevinmoton7326 wrong, he was born in 1916 not 1913, there had been controversy over his age but that was laid to rest by a census from 1920 and Archie was 3 years old and some months at that point. He won the LH title at the age of 36 and he fought on into his mid 40s so He was a late bloomer. Some people hit their prime at 25 and some hit their prime at 42 and some hit it anywhere in between. it's just relative to the fighter but Archie was still on top of his game when he fought Marciano and he had 42 more fights after only losing 3. He had many of his best fights before the Marciano fight as well as after and he'd shown no signs of slowing leading up to the fight.

Ali was being nice. He would've peppered Rocky Marciano. Sonny Liston would've out brawled Rocky Marciano. SMH. Far overrated. Rocky was far too small to beat Ali or Liston.
To me his dedication is just unreal. Imagine running 5 miles every fucking day + additional 10 miles of walking + actual training. Its being mentioned that he completely isolated himself in training camp, no wife, no calls, no letters, nothing. On top of that he also increased road work to 10 miles a day + uping the pace of his normal training as well. Its really no wonder this man never ran out of gas. What a legend
He had no sensation of pain. The opponent landed blow after blow, he smiled and started knocking them down. Reminds me of the Rocky quote - "It doesn't matter how hard you can land blows, it's about how many blows you can take and still get up and ask for more." Respect.

Maybe little white Rocky could have beaten that circus clown Jess Willard who was paraded around for 4 years without a single fight. Or maybe he could have even beat that other circus clown Primo Carnera who was daily alcoholic (like Andre the Giant) and 100% mafioso controlled. The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission.
Little white 184 lb Marciano had a featherweight arm reach of 67" inches. Imagine penguin🐧arms Rocky trying to fight authentic Super Heavyweights with 50 to 80+ pound weight advantages and 80" to 85" arm reaches? What an embarrassment Rocky would have been today. The less said about 254 lb Humphrey Jackson the better. He only had 7 fights as a pro and had found a way to be KO'd by a guy with 1 fight. Why compare a light heavyweight punch numbers to a true-Heavyweight. Only sik-minded fanboys would even try to compare.
189lbs, shortest reach in HW history, one of the shortest in height, smallest hands in HW history, but also, one of the best chins, one of the hardest punches and all while fighting bigger opponents, some significantly bigger. He ran 5-6 miles every single day, 10-12 miles when a fight was announced, 12-15 miles on fight week, trained with a 300lb heavy bag, and never took a day off. Rocky passed away in 1969 and his first biography came out in 1977. All the information about Rocky came entirely from family and friends testimony. If you can believe Rocky's biography why not Ezzard's biography? William Dettloff and Ezzard's family are in the process of getting Ezzard's ALS changed from 1968 to 1951 at Wikipedia. The heavyweight division was at it's weakest during Marciano's time. He fought and defeated both Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott when both were well past their prime. The mafia paid judges and refs off and even made fighters take dives. Fans once littered the ring when Marciano won a decision against a nobody who kicked his ass in every department. The newspaper wrote an article stating that the judges had seen a different fight than everyone else. Look at his videos. Not one shows anybody other than an old washed up opponent or a punching bag that just stood flat footed against him. Fury and any modern super heavyweight would destroy him.
The fight between Rocky and Walcott was like a movie. I see now why in the Rocky movies he takes so much damage, for him to by force of will power alone make an outstanding come back. Respect to both men ✊ legends.
@Adam Chapman I think we are both right. While the story of his first film is loosely inspired by Chuck Wepner, a boxer who fought Muhammad Ali and lost on a TKO in the 15th round, the inspiration for the name, iconography and fighting style came from boxing legend Rocco Francis "Rocky Marciano" Marchegiano.
Well said Markus. Many people write off Walcott with a stroke of a pen, dismissing him as over the hill. I simply say watch the first fight with Rocky and if you are honest you will revise your opinion. Anyone with an open mind will have to admit that in Walcott they are watching a true boxing master with one punch knockout power (witness title win v Charles). Earlier in his career Walcott was mismanaged, taking fights at the latest of notice to feed his large family. Often not trained or fed properly. When Felix Boccichio took over the managerial reigns all that changed. Walcott finally had the luxury of being properly looked after and thrived on it. His career then went from strength to strength. Walcott was a fine family man, a clean liver whose temperate habits preserved his body. When he fought the Rock, he clearly had the body of a much younger man at the peak of his powers. Contrast his physique to that of the great Joe Louis at the same age. Louis had the body of a much older man with clearly slack muscle tone. Walcott on the other hand was rock solid, had lightning reflexes, sublime skill and power as well as a tremendous will to win. Rocky's win over Jersey Joe was in reality one of the greatest title winning performances in boxing history at any weight. Good to see more and more people are seeing this ,standing up for the Rock and giving him (and Walcott ) the respect they deserve.
That knockout in the 13th round was amazing. Also I doubt any of todays fighters could last with a cut like he had on his nose; truly a man with a heart like a Lion.

Rocky definitely had short arms, 67 inch reach. But they must have bumped their heads when they said he had the smallest hands of all Heavyweight Champ's. His hands were huge !! And bigger than most Heavyweights. Check out the picture of him and Dempsey comparing fists, Rockys dwarfed Dempsey's...
Rocky`s physical strength was astonishing bordering on the supernatural. Archie Moore said;.."Rocky was far and away the strongest man I ever encountered". When one bears in mind that Moore spent his adult life training & sparring with men 2 - 3 stone heavier than Rocky that is an incredible statement. Joe Louis said of Rocky ;.."It hurt if you bumped into him". I personally believe that pound for pound Rocky could beat any fighter that there ever was.
I've lived in Rockys hometown of Brockton,Massachusetts for all my life, it's the city of champions. Marvin Hagler also grew up and trained here. The hard work ethics of both fighters still echoes throughout the city.
As someone who was born and raised in Boston, MA, I am proud to say that Rocky Marciano put Brockton on the map for time immemorial. Ay yo Rocky 🥊 Today you can still see his pictures all over boxing gyms in Brockton and elsewhere in Mass.
Do the gyms tell everyone abour Marciano being an ex-con, who went around London during the War, doing things with the homosexuals, then beating them up and robbind them? Or about him being a mob controlled fighter? I doubt it.
@Alan Proof? Maybe there’s a reason “nobody talks about it”. Maybe it’s something you heard and want to believe because you’ve got a contrarian streak about you?
@@Alan-vg7cn "Rocky went to the gym where Liston trained," Duva said. "He was supposed to interview him, but Liston kept teasing Rocky, saying, 'You wouldn't last two rounds with me.' Rocky stayed calm, but he was getting mad. Finally, Rocky said, 'Get me some trunks, some shoes, and gloves and let's see what happens.' Rocky was serious. Liston's people ran in like they were doing the 100-yard dash, grabbed Sonny and took him out of the gym."
The style of coming forward and bludgoening opponents Rocky had appeared to be a clear influence on Tyson's career. The key to that style though is a ferocious work ethic that allowed them to maintain an extremely high punch rate at the same time with extreme power - just try shadowboxing with full swings of the arms for a minute and you'll know what I'm talking about. Tyson was a very successful boxer but I don't think many people realized how hard he worked outside of the ring to get to display his abilities in it and the same is true for Rocky.
Tyson and Marciano were nothing alike in style, apart from their records for knocking guys out. Rocky was a flat footed slugger who lumbered forward relentlessly and wore guys down from his incredible stamina and work rate and ability to maintain his punching power into the late rounds. Tyson was an assassin with explosive speed and power. Tyson also had great defence and body movement and in his younger days could hit and not get hit. Tyson's punching power blinds people to just how skilful a boxer he actually was. Rocky would come straight ahead and take 3 to land 1. Tyson had Rocky's incredible work ethic, but the same could be said of all the great champions, all of them trained harder than their rivals.
I'll be honest, when I watch a lot of hard hitting boxers, a lot of there hits never really looked all that "impactful" but holy hell, I could feel Rockys punches through the screen. This man could probably K.O. Superman.
He completed his story, no need to continue after reaching the greatness he worked so hard for. Live the rest of his days happy and accomplished. Amazing guy.

What an amazing video. I love the quality, the clips, the narration, everything. I hope you can do these for as many boxers as possible because this is absolute gold. Thank you.
I have a feeling that, much like Marvin Hagler, Marciano may have had a thicker skull that also helped him withstand some of those punishing blows from opponents. Combine that with his out-of-this-world work ethic and his massive heart, and you get what he was--an undefeatable champion.
His ability to take blows was probably because of all the fluid between his brain and skull as well as his absolute willpower to not go down .That fluid prevents your brain from hitting your skull too much which is the main way you lose control of your legs and go down in boxing. That's my guess at the very least anyway thinking about it in a scientific way.

@@sergiomarretta3753 I like to compare prime to prime, or as close as possible. We have to remember that Ali didn't fight in his prime. He had to stop in his mid 20s, and couldn't fight again until late 20s. He likely wasn't training as hard during that period. So, technically, the best Ali footage we've seen was probably just a good version of his best. It would be a decision, but Ali could throw punches from all angles, so he would dance, slip, and counter all fight. Taking nothing from Rock though, he's one of the best ever. Ali had the advantage of being pushed by a tough heavyweight era, and Marciano had the advantage of being pushed by harsh living conditions. Ali fought too long, and Marciano stopped too early, but hey, that's how it goes. I also don't think Marciano fought anybody with Ali's hand speed. I love Marciano, but I think prime Tyson is the best brawler I've seen. If Cus lived longer, Tyson might have been undefeated.

If you educated yourself, and found out that Marciano was nothing more than a mugger and robber, who when to prison while in the Army for strong armed robbery. Was to get a bad conduct discharge, but they had him re-up afther prison then gave him an honorable discharge. He was controlled by the mob, hook, line and sinker. Check his record, in his 21st fight, against a fighter who had a record with 49 losses, he was ready to get knocked out in three differant rounds, only to have the fighter Ted Lowry back off, because he was paid $2,500 by the mob not to win! Rocky never fought a true heavyweight who had power, who wasn't past his prime. He started to make a comeback, until he saw what Liston did to Patterson. I like you, spent the last 60 years believing all the BS about this guy.
What he was, was a double tought meathead, who could take punishment; He was a dirty fighter, who either lost points, or was warned several times in almost every one of his fights for loe blows. If you would like to see what a Marciano v Liston fight would have looked like...look up the Tyson/Leonix Lewis fight on you tube...Liston would have made a "punk" out of him!..boxing Rec has all the records, read all the comments on the fight against Lowry #21

That man's pace was brutal he just kept coming and throwing, he had no regard for his own body...he just left it out there dangling daring fighters to hit him with everything ask jersey Joe...he made the comment that the man is so easy to hit but what Joe didn't realize was it didn't matter what you hit him with he just kept coming and training boxing 83 rounds is crazy ....he was prepared for a marathon in every single fight ...round 13 when the man is standing in the middle of the ring waiting for you after taking round after round of punishment is crazy ....the man was made out of iron...his style was simple alot of fighters today would have loved the fact that you could hit him with ease but after round 10 they all would have Been gassed and left wondering what they have to do to slow him down, wondering how they could keep him off them ....he battered fighters body,head,arms...after 10 rounds of getting your body smacked, arms beat on ,head knocked around fighters today wouldn't know how to handle that kind of style ....pure bruising style, hit you anywhere he could...just inflict damage all over a fighter...thats something fighters never experienced until they fought rounds with rocky ....he use to like punching fighters in the elbows why?because as the rounds went on it became harder to hold ur arms up,throw punches then you where a sitting duck

He lied about it for years and years, and finally late in his life he admitted it but claimed "I was trying to tighten them", which is obviously a lie. A) he has no right to touch them B) why not notify the people in charge of the ring/the commission or sanctioning body; not to mention them cutting open Ali's gloves to give him extra time to recover in between rounds, when he was knocked down and badly hurt by Cooper, his blatant fouls - well over 100 of them - in his 2nd fight with Frazier, etc...).
George beat himself in Zaire, along with Ali's faux rope a dope, never seen again after, that allowed him to lean back further thus Foreman only hit him at the end of his punches, losing most of his power.
George believed in his own invincibility and didn't train for a 15 round fight, and so he got tired, he got caught, and he got ended. That's on him.
He was an extremely good boxer, he just chose not to box. However he was extremely inexperienced, not just opponent wise, but he had a VERY late start boxing, short amateur career, and very short pro career considering the time it was.

@@f0ns0r Didn't Cus have Mike Tyson study Marciano for how to win as a shorter opponent with shorter reach? Tyson's (and Marciano's) defensive technique were probably underrated. Also, being shorter, they probably had a neck-strength advantage/leverage advantage, which they now say a few extra pounds of strength in the neck gives huge protection from concussion. This video surprised me because I never would have guessed he had such an impressive record and that he was such a great role model. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Because white men can’t be glorified anymore
Stallone's Rocky movies are not about Rocky Marciano. It is widely known the inspiration for those movies was Chuck Wepner.
The heavyweight division was at it's weakest during Marciano's time. He fought and defeated both Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott when both were well past their prime. Can't knock the Rock for beating everyone who came around during his time, but he certainly was in the right place at the right time. Had he been born ten years later, he would have fought the likes of Floyd Patterson, Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, Oscar Bonavena and George Chuvalo. @Adam Chapman I think we are both right.

Both Brockton Heroes! Met Hagler went to school with his step kids. And Rocky Marciano's nephews.
Seems Julio Cesar Chavez had that same thick skull…was measured somehow.
BUT took the pain was a great champ
@@abusharifah72 Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles and Jersey joe Walcott had Rocky beat, just wasn't quite able to finish the job, those were great title fights.
@@abusharifah72 I imagine they were great people. Thanx for sharing.
This is a top shelf documentary of one of the greatest fighters that ever laced em up.
dude was literally born to defy the odds. when the doctor said his survival all depends on his willpower, that gave me goosebumps.
Until someone invents a time-machine and goes back in time and defeats Rocky Marciano... He is the greatest.
I agree long live the stallion.
He got beat twice look it up
@@creamysocksdad8301 where never lost better than mike and ali greatest in my opinion

Always the nicest comments 🙏🙏 Glad you're enjoying boxing's history. Thank you Michael!
@@RainyDayBoxing you have a great narrators voice. Definitely one of the best. Looking forward to more of your uploads. Would like to see one on Jack Johnson if you haven't already done one🥊🥊🥊
@@studentofsweetscience6922 yeah, because Ali was world renown at showing respect to other fighters. I guessing you have an interview where Ali confessed to that being the reason he said what he said.
At the end of the day years from now this interview will stand and opinions of why he said it will fade away.
Just the fact that Mohammed Ali saying that Rocky would've caused him the most trouble is enough
That's just what people said out of respect. Nobody really thinks a slow, light heavyweight like Marciano would stand a chance against a bigger, faster, stronger, more naturally crafty boxer like Ali.
@@j.baldwin3012 Yeah, over the ages thousands have speculated that Marciano would likely beat Ali. It really could have went either way. Did you see the mans record?
@@GregNaturalImpaktJones Undefeated means you were the best in your era, it doesn't mean you can beat any fighter that has ever lost a fight.
@@j.baldwin3012 it depends on which version of Ali we're talking about, the 60s one was virtually unhittable, obviously you cant beat the guy if you don't catch him, but the one who lost to Norton and Frazier would be a completely different story. Rocky is a misunderstood champion, he more than overcompensated his natural limits of height and reach, also he trained like a mad man to go down below 190, he could have easily fought at 205, old films are deceiving.
The Rock. A true gentleman of the sport. And an all time legend.
