    A 'switch grinder"? Yes, I'm familiar with one of those. My parents would use a switch to grind my tookus when called for back in the ancient world.
    One of these days, I'm going to see a train coming from or going over the track to the left where they converge/diverge at your usual spot. I'm not going to hold my breath.

    That was neat seeing some of those cars on the K82. Less than eight miles away is an industrial park and in storage are some of those patched CN & ICG hoppers. Then those Cargill covered hoppers are currently being rebuilt at the Rocky Mountain Railcar Repair facility in Tooele UT. Easy way to tell if it has been overhauled is the frame will be painted grey. Great catch!

    I first saw this beast about 5 years ago grinding away on UP rail in the middle of the night. I originally thought the train was on fire, I had never heard of a rail grinder. Quite a sight to see.

    I lived about 250 yds. from the UP's curving main line thru south central Oregon. The Grinder was a regular sight about every 18 to 24 months. Always stopped what I was doing to watch it come through!

    I am surprised at how rough they left it. I am of the understanding they can grind the profile as well, were the flanges would rub. A few heavy long trains and that buzz will be smoothed right out. Would be nice to see the working parts of the grinder.

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  5 лет назад +2

      That would be nice but with the low traffic you say is there, I wouldn't hold your breath.. You typically only see these machines on heavily used mainlines.. In a situation like yours you'd probably get the older, hand-me-down rail that was swapped out from a busier line.. If you ever get the "T" in your area, then you might be able to catch such a machine.

    That grinder is a beast. I assume that is a traction assistance as well as a cleaning process. I also assume the new rail was laid before that went through. As for the K82 video I had a huge smile as you rushed to set up. This time about 20 seconds early and with a flat on your bike you are a real treat in more ways than 1. Keep it up AC keep it up always bro.

    Superb catches. The wheels will sing now. Excellent video AC. I was wondering. That rail that they dropped off. Is that going to replace the rail next year? My brain is have a hard time understanding why they would grind the rail first then replacing it.

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  5 лет назад +1

      My best guess is that when they replace it they'll use the old rail on another lower priority main line like a secondary or a branch.

    I drive past the Loram Shops in Minnesota everyday and it seems as though there's a brand new unit waiting to be shipped. I believe that the unit will be shipped to the west coast before heading to Australia.
    (Edit) I can confirm that the shiny new yellow unit does not say Loram on it, but instead has the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) logo on the side.

    How often do rails need grinding, and what or how or who decides it needs to be done. And then how do they determine that it's been ground enough?

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  4 года назад

      The busier the line, the more often it gets ground.. My guess would be that track maintainers make the request and it goes through the chain of command and is either approved or denied.. The grinding machine has sensors.. The tank cars hold water for putting out fires caused by the sparks.

    What good does it do to grind the tracks? I would like to see the tracks up close before the grinder gets to your location and then the tracks after the grinder has done it's thing. Just curious. Thank You! in advance. June 24, 2019

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  5 лет назад +1

      The grinder reshapes the rail head to a rounded shape.. After thousands of heavy trains pound over a section a rail, the rail head gets flat and loses its shape thereby creating more wheel to rail contact/friction, therefore making it harder to pull the loads.
