Conrail ordered 30 additional SD80MAC's just before the split. EMD would not allow the order to be cancelled, but allowed NS and CSX to change the type of unit delivered. 15 SD70MAC's for CSX and 24 SD70's for NS. The additional units made up for the lower cost of both types of unit.
There were only four SD60MAC's ever built, and were owned by EMD. They demonstrated on BN primarily, and were painted in a quasi BN scheme.
Your odd and ends info is priceless and the NARROWS pacing trains is just down right BADASS !!
Keep up the great work.🇺🇸
Thanks Marine.. From an Air Force man I enjoy having you chime in.. Semper Fi.
Indeed, that pacing shot in the Narrows was sweet! I can't imagine being that close to a train at track speed. Very cool.
I know right.. But, I've done it!!
Pacing trains in that area is not common, because I'm better at chasing a northbound NS freight with the Norfolk & Western heritage unit. I didn't notice pacing trains around the NS Southern Tier.
Starring: NS #8103 (ES44AC) "Norfolk / Western Heritage"
I remember those Oakways on the BNSF back in the mid to late 2000s.
Yep, me too.. Thanks for watching.
AC you are fun to listen to... honest insights and excellent video.
Thanks Calvin.. I'm glad you enjoy them.. Just learned, you also had the WP out there in Ogden. Cool.
I wonder why NS initially down-rated their Dash -9s? Fuel economy, perhaps?? I always thought it was odd that they did that when other railroads bought hundreds upon hundreds of the same loco rated at the full 4400hp.
Another great video, AC.I really like all the information you provide. 👍🏻
Thanks Fritz.. I think you got the answer right.. It always comes down to $$$$$.. I thought it was odd too.
Very nice video, locomotive history was quite interesting.
That 7 locomotive lash up was as the kids say “the bomb”
Thanks for sharing
👍👍👍😎😎😎 Cary
Thanks, Gadget.. Yeah, that was something to see.. AND HEAR.. Funny thing is that we caught that train by accident as we were on our way home!!
Nice... the narrows is really the narrows.. I almost reached out to touch the NS Heritage Norfolk and Western... wow👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yeah right!! It's something else isn't it!!
Nice photos and the no scanner thing that’s how I watched trains for about 10 years of my life
Cool.. But get one though if you haven't already.. They're very helpful to have around.
Trains21 I do have one now
@@BlackDiamondProductions Haha!! Nice!!
Another excellent and very interesting video, love the history of both you and the NS..:)
Thanks Fleet Commander!
The very first MAC's were SD60MAC's. I think there were four of them as demonstrators. BN took them as part of there 300 unit purchase of SD70MAC's. I think these four were upgraded to SD70MAC specs. Great presentation. Excellent video AC. That cab on the CN was a Draper Taper. They were boxier in shape.
Thanks Hans for shedding some additional light on all of that.. I miss the CN wide cabs and wide bodys.. I miss the 20th century.
@@Trains21 I remember the 20th century. I didn't get a chance to do much rail fanning. Life happens.
SD60MAC's had 710 prime movers at 3800hp. Those four were up grade to the 4300hp versions.
@@iusetano Cool.. Thanks for providing that little nugget of golden info.. I am sorry that you couldn't/didn't do much railfanning in yester years but you're always welcome aboard this way-back machine as we re-live some of the gold ol' days.
Oh! These Conrail Quality painted SD70's are my favorite engines in this video. I did not note the SD60MAC's on NS. On Canadian National's shops, the draper tapers are too bad for me. I ended up taping the old CN units later on, but I have no idea why do we chase trains because they are so fast when I ended at a dead end close by. The day never ends, but I did not see a dead end anywhere. That reminds me! If you're lucky, then Super Mario Maker 2 arrives on Nintendo Switch on June 28th, 2019. Of course, if you have a Nintendo Switch at home along with Super Mario Maker 2 (available on 6/28), you have to experience new, improved features, including more new game styles like Super Mario 3D World in some cases, using slopes, new background styles for your courses, snake blocks, swapping from Mario to Luigi, adding water to the course (while not set to Underwater), and more. Also, I like the ability to chase trains, but not sure what the train ID is on which you're pacing? Give me an answer, please!
Thank for the tip
Oakland leasing
Trains 21 is awesome💞💞💞💞💞
Very informative. Great video. Saw 4014 Big Boy in it`s shakedown yesterday unbelievable.
I'll bet.
AWESOME!!!😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁
This is a cool series format... love to listen to your stories.
Even though I am a Amateur Radio operator, and have two meter handhelds out the wazoo, and I have even programmed one of them f or the railroad frequencies in addition to the local ham repeaters, I seldom carry the thing.. So most of the time it's by luck that I see a train. There is ALWAYS a train or two on the rail bridge ( CSX?) across the Ohio, just north of the Brent Spence I75/71 bridge in Cincinnati. Unfortunately I can only get a quick glimpse of the rail traffic since my traffic is going across a very narrow , 5 lane double deck bridge at 55-70 mph with cars / semi trucks are trying to change lanes and are accelerating at the same time. This is where 71 and 75 will merge southbound until they diverge at about 20 miles south in Northern Kentucky ( "THE SPLIT") Not rail fan friendly !
Yep, I know that road/highway very well.. Been across that bridge many times.. Thanks for chiming in and sharing your own experiences.
The susquehanna engines were just spotted on Railstream's Shenandoah junction cam, they have a clip of it!!
Cool!! I'll check it out.. What's the link??
Its on their youtube but ill find it for you

@@tommytemplar1335 Thanks!!
So all those NYS&W were leased units? Watched them go back and forth thru Cortland for a decade. Then they lost a couple. Now mixed flag units are the norm.
Not sure if they're leased.. It was my impression that they were bought outright but I could be wrong of course.
Awesome video!
Thanks Santa Fe!
I believe CN bought a large block of the former OAKWAY SD60'S several years ago. They rebuilt and repainted them, but I can't remember what # series they put them in, but they are definitely still out there earning revenue.
Thanks John.. Yeah, you're right.. I forgot about those.. I have to check to see which ones I have.
The CN units were numbered in the 5400 series, GF-638c
Thanks Greg!
I remember GATX had some too if I’m not mistaken, they just marked out the EMD logos used to see those in the yard near me, usually with a NS Dash 9 and a long cut of top gon hoppers
Very nice video!!
Thanks Neto!!
Do you know the specifications for the sd60mac by any chance oh and great vid
Yeeezus that's close at 6:08!!!
Indeed it is!
in the pic the second unit is either one of CNs GP38-2Ws or GP40-2Ws
Thanks Dylan.. I'm told that it's a 40 but I think that it's a 38.
NS de rated their dash-9s for better horsepower distribution and fuel efficiency, believe that was the CSX thought as well
Ok, thanks for sharing.
Conrail ns unit have been showing in California around me
Really!?.. In 2019??
CSX’s dash 9’s used to be classified as C44-8W’s
Thanks for that info.
Second unit was a CN GP40-2W
Thanks Tyler.. You have a sharp eye!!
Lol no problem, Sometimes I think I know my CN loco’s better than my NS ones. Great video AC!
I know right!! Thanks, Man.
BN got 4 SD60MACs demo units but then made the decision to get 350 SD70macs
Thanks for that info.
Do you know the specs of the sd60mac they sounds very interesting btw great vid👍🏽👌🏽
All I can tell you is that they were similar to their predecessor 3600 hp SD50 but much improved on with 3800 hp.
Trains21 ah ok thanks for the info
60 of them where purchased by CN and #in the 5400 series
OK thanks
The 2nd loco is not a Draper taper.. it’s got the radiator wings at the back and railings all the way down the side
as..a former brakeman..working. For Conrail New Jersey divison. Selkirk to. Newark..on the extra.
BN did have SD60MACs
And now the SD70's are being rebuilt into SD70ACC's.
That's right.
Rip standard cabs
I believe UP had sd60macs as well
Name a locomotive and UP probably had it
Cool.. Thanks for pointing that out.
Trains21 and BN
@@ironhorsemedia2881 Yep.. Knew about BN.
2nd unit is a GP40-2WL
Thanks Martin
Materials that water materials in going down the sluice boxes Fred's plan Freddy coming out here my nephew Kendall he started to mine gold with a friend of his friend they got themselves in one hell of a mess we just got another fabricator all his tools come in a good guy I told us for free but when you guys get up first thing I want those, all the other stuff out
Cn proud units
Indeed!
All CSX are ES40DCs
No ES44DCs exist in CSX
Thank you for your input.. But I never said that CSX had ES44DCs.. I said that an ES40DC is a de-rated 44DC.. Just like the NS D9-40CW was a de-rated D9-44CW.
I was just letting you know AC, you said in the video if any CSX fans knew if they beefed them back up to 4400 just letting you know that they didn’t with any of them :)
@@CoopsTrains Understood.. And my true apology if I mistook your intention.. But please understand that I'm constantly being bombarded with snarky comments from railroad puritans who misconstrue my words and then try to lecture me about them.. By all means, I look forward to hearing more of your knowledge.
Btw I’m loving the old pics
And the frequent posting
Keep it up!!! 😁
My man I get those same snarky people :/ I understand what you mean by that, I find it very aggravating, but I REALLY love your videos Keep it up!! :)
OWY 9047 > EMDX 9047 > CN 5471
Thanks Man.. I've caught at least 2 CN SD60s so I'll have to see if either of their numbers match.
@@Trains21 No problem. Have you checked out my video of me pacing 25Z this past summer?
Not yet, but I will shortly.. Thanks.
Used to see those blue/ white leasers powering bn coal trains here in st.louis.
Cool!! Those must be some memories! Thanks for sharing.
