Also I don't have the slightest idea why I called the game an RPG, just a slip of the tongue, I guess I had Tactics Ogre or FFT on the brain or something. This is a garbage video
The tutorial is skippable. Nell asks you right when you start the game whether it's your first time playing or not, and if you say no she tells you how you only need to clear the last one to open up the other modes. Coincidentally, the tutorials in the three sequels are sutured onto the campaign and really are unskippable.
Funny coz I played duel strike then went to play 1 and 2. So I answered yes and I was like wow first game throw you in with no tutorial lol then realized it was somewhere else. Didn't realize it be part of the story if I answered yes.
Even if the tutorial was mandatory (and yeah, it's long) I wouldn't call it a *major* flaw. I wish you had talked more about the soundtrack and the pixel art, they're really one of the things I miss the most about the Advance Wars series in general. Black Hole Rising is still the best, and the DS one is genuinely a long and challenging game.
This series peaked at Advance Wars Dual Strike (for the DS), IMHO. It's fun, has nice campaign and the CO system strikes a perfect balance while adding some replayability and individual customization.
Well, AWDS is the most polished one of the three, but the campaign is way too easy on it. Even the hard campaign is laughable. It is nothing compared to AW1 advanced campaign.
THANK YOU for a *short* but detailed and objective review! i'm still on the fence about trying it out, but that's why i came here; to learn more! *thank you* again
I made my way through that infamous tutorial just this afternoon. Took several hours of dedication, concentration, and letting myself enter into a hyperactive trance due to Nell's theme looping ad nauseam. Afterwards, I felt like I had emerged from a wormhole, with the life I had lived up until then left squarely behind me.
I definitely recommend it, it's amazing, at least 1 and 2, the 3rd game for DS is not as good imo, tried to go a darker route and lost a lot of charm, still a solid game. First one is a lot harder than second or felt like that for me, the second has a lot more depth and modes available, as well as a harder campaign as a game+ kinda thing, don't remember if AW1 has that second playthrough too though.
Mauricio Alonso Garrido i liked days of ruin though. The fan base is really divided with that game, some like it, others hate it. Also dual strike is fun.
The artwork and story are debatable and really comes down to preference, but I honestly liked the gameplay of days of ruin a little more. It had a bit more depth imho. Both are exceptional strategy games and you will thoroughly enjoy them. Just get both and play the shit out of them, you won't regret it.
I specially recommend dual strike for the DS, a few more land units, many new COs, and great new modes and options for custom battles. Days of ruin seems cool too but it's almost a different series.
Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars, such an underrated hidden gem on the gba such amazing music production quality packed into such a tiny cartridge, I frequently plug my gba micro into blutooth speaker and enjoy the sound test feature, track #6 and #24 two of my faves, great dialogue between characters and sometimes dramatic plot developments courtesy of none other than Hideo Kojima
It has fun multiplayer too. I own 4 copys and 4 GBAs and its a blast. Believe it or not part of the fun is the politics of discussing with the other players temporary truces to team up on bigger threats of course you got to be careful because you don't know how long that will last
I never owned a Game Boy Advance, but I played the hell out of Advance Wars via Visual Boy Advance, really the only strategy/tactical games I could ever get into outside of Fire Emblem. I'm still kind of surprised they didn't at least localized the original Game Boy games in the Wars series, since they would have been the perfect games for long trips back in the day.
Love your reviews, and you're usually 100% spot-on, but I have to disagree with you on the tutorial. I found it really helpful first time playing (but then again I hadn't played any similar games to it before, so the genre was totally new to me). I haven't a problem with them shoving the tutorial in; they could've added a skip option though I guess (although the tutorial does comprehensively cover the game-specific info you will need). The GBA sequel is better, and the series reached it's apex (in my opinion) with Advance Wars: Dual Strike on the Nintendo DS. The series gets compared to Fire Emblem a lot but I always much preferred Advance Wars. With Fire Emblem, you're having to wade past screen-after-screen of dialogue (being an RPG), whereas Advance Wars usually just cuts to the chase - which is thankful because some battles can take ages. I sunk *a lot* of time into Advance Wars: DS (flic.kr/p/cBdGGC), so will look to see what you think if/when you review it with keen interest! :)
I'm a PC gamer , I have some of those time in Mount and Blade or total wars Game, after years I'm in the mission 26 for Dual Strike, after playing many games, revisit this one is amazing.
I remember seeing this in the Nintendo Power special publication on GBA games. I really wanted it, but after 9/11 a lot of stores did not want to sell it. My grandpa thought he got the game I wanted for me when he got a Toy Soldier game. Eventually, I found it at a Toy' R'Us and really played it a lot w/ friends. The sequel was a fun way to kill time on long bus trips for sports.
Oh snap, this game is like the war segment of Suikoden 2, and I loved it. I didn't know there was entire video games dedicated to this gameplay. I even thought if Suikoden 2 included more elaborate war segments, this would turn a perfect game into a perfecter game.
Not sure about the first one, but I started Advance Wars 2 (because I saw it was rated higher) as my first tactical strategy game ever a few days back and am already really into it. Very fun game that doesn't take itself seriously
Damn my and my friends played advance wars 1 and 2 alot on the game advance. Those games where popular here. never knew it was alot earlier on the snes!!
I clicked on this video to answer the thumbnails question, Yes it is worth playing and I own most of the series in the original format but if they re-released the games in a combo pack on switch I would buy it.
I remember when I first played advanced wars on the GBA back in the early 2000s and I had such a blast with that game. Then I played advanced wars 2 also for the GBA and it was even better and actually a little more balanced because in the original advanced wars some of the co-powers were a little bit OPand as a result of there being regular Co powers and super Co powers in advance wars 2, the Co powers that were OP ended up being super Co powers and then the seal powers that were not as threatening were regular Co Powers but then they had stronger super Co powers. And then when I finally got a Nintendo DS in 2005 the very first game I played was advanced wars dual strike which added more COs and a lot more additional new units and even added tag Co powers, although admittedly that was a bit much. Still it was a pretty amazing game as well with all the additional things they added to it and it did make some pretty interesting use of the two screens of the DS even getting to the point of allowing you to battle on two different maps at the same time one on the bottom screen and one on the top screen. But finally in 2008 they released advanced wars days of ruin which to this day I still am completely certain is the best advanced wars game by far. The reason why is because it is the most balanced by far as you actually have to make a lot more effort to gain a CO power as you have to actually rally your Co with a unit which actually puts Co space around it which gives units in that Co space stat boosts and whatever is in that Co space or whatever attacks enemies from that Co space or the unit itself that has the co with it will allow you to gain the experience points needed to fill up the co meter and use your Co power. Prior to rallying your Co with a unit every single Co in the game has balanced stats and no advantages or disadvantages therefore making this the most balanced game. some units were taken away but they make up for it with some additional new units and better balances within the game itself and another really cool thing is that each individual unit in advanced wars days of ruin ranks up every time they fully kill an enemy unit so over time your units actually get stronger. not to mention there's a much better map editor as instead of only allowing three slots for maps there's 100. That's right you can create up to 100 customizable maps and there's more customization as well as you can choose from as low as 10x10 to as high as 30x30 or make it go stretched across wide with like a 10x30 or stretched across tall with like a 30x10 or something. 20x20 is the default and previously 20x30 was the only size. this was also the only advanced wars game with online play, but unfortunately they really fucked up on the online play but it's still really fun to play with other people locally since of course you can just pass around a single Nintendo DS around the room and take turns. Although if your friends actually have this game you can play on your own Nintendo DS's of course. what really disappoints me is that this really is the best advanced wars they've ever made but they never actually bothered to make any more of them. this came out way back in 2008 and it improved upon everything that the prior games had actually done. It would be incredible to see a newer one of these games with some newer units and with this more balanced play and the ranking up system and all that. It seems the closest thing to that existing is War Groove which is an indie game that looks just like advanced wars in fact the from the footage I saw it was exactly like advanced wars except it took place in the past instead of the present. And my stupid voice to text keeps on making me say advanced instead of advance
Oh dude this game and the sequel was my jam, it's probably the only game I ever went "tourneyfag" for between this and Yugioh worldwide edition, I still play on my phone to kill time when bored and stuck somewhere
Uh yeah actually you do need this. Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, all those rpg luck oriented fucky fuck games are nothing like Advance Wars. But either way, you're wrong. You don't have to complete all 13 training missions. You only have to complete the last one.
It's been years since I first played Advance Wars 1, but I'm 90% sure you don't actually need to play through all of the tutorial levels in order to unlock the campaign - just the final one where Nell gives no advice. If you _ABSOLUTELY HATE_ tutorials I can see why the way Advance Wars is structured would be frustrating, but consider that none of the other five Nintendo Wars games that came before Advance Wars bothered to explain how to play. True, Super Famicom Wars does have a help option, but it still doesn't explain things. Advance Wars did, making it the ideal place for newcomers. I recall way back in the day, IGN gave Advance Wars a 9.9 out of 10. It isn't perfect but it's as close as it could possibly be, especially for a game that came out so early on.
I'm not sure if Fire Emblem, Tactics ogre or games like these are what I would compare Advance Wars to, even if they look very similar. Rather, I find the Advance Wars series to play more like a simplified (and more portable-friendly) version of the old Battle Isle series (a series that used to be quite high-profile back in the days, but seems to be mostly forgotten these days)
If you ever want to talk about time-inefficient battles, review Ring of Red for the PS1. I found that game unique, memorable and fun, but holy hell it was a slog.
Advance Wars is ok but I love Super Famicom Wars which is the earlier version so there are more units, there's no "where did they come from?" superpowers and since it's not dumbed down, you have to think a lot more. It's not as good as any Fire Emblem ga... Radiant Dawn? Ok, it's better than that one... but the overall game franchise is a lot more forgiving. I can easily put both games alongside PC equivalents like Heroes of Might and Magic and King's Bounty. It would have been sweet if Nintendo ported both game franchises when they were made back for the NES.
I liked both the Advance Wars games on GBA, as well as Dual Strike on the DS! Days of Ruin however, doesn’t have the same charm as the first three Advance Wars titles
I liked Advance Wars. But Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on 3DS is a MASSIVE drag in comparison. Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars is WAY better, especially since there's NO tutorial for it.
I wasn't really into tactics but i did manage to beat one tactic game and mann doesn't it took a long time to beat it..but this game look faster then any Tactic game i played(Tactic ogre)so i might give it a go. :)
But it's not an SRPG either, it's just a strategy game. Superficially it looks very similar to Fire Emblem which *is* an SRPG, but Advance Wars itself has no RPG elements anywhere in sight.
Well it's a action-strategy game ported from computers of the time with some sidescrolling sections. All done in a bit of a comical style. And you can make the confederacy win in it. 2 player versus as well.
yep, advance wars days of ruin makes the 1st game worthless. I used to hate the stories and slow movement til it got so much better in the last game. Maybe I should try the DS version 1 day. I just played AW2 and felt it was annoying, especially with those pipe missions. I do respect the fog of war and multiplayer on 1 screen. That I'll admit was fun.
I really liked the first advance wars. The second one was also good, but then they did that weird version for N64 iirc which didn't include any tactics and that 3rd part that was way worse than the first 2 and after that the franchise got dropped :(
"One major flaw:" A tutorial that takes less than an hour to complete, in a game you can honestly spend 300+ hours playing. I mean, are you kidding me? I haven't been this disgusted since my surprise at the gorge went haywire and my dad wound up getting killed. Of course, I was disgusted at myself that time, since it was all my fault...
I'm currently replaying this one due that the awfully redesigned AW 1+2 for the switch is delayed because of the Russian-Ukrain war. And yes after many years it is still holding up pretty well, not as much as it's sequel or Wargroove but decent. except the tutorial, now that is boring. but gameplay, art and soundtrack are great!
Yes, I know now you can skip the tutorial. Would've been nice had the game (or the manual) had been a bit more adamant about that. Still my fault.
Also I don't have the slightest idea why I called the game an RPG, just a slip of the tongue, I guess I had Tactics Ogre or FFT on the brain or something. This is a garbage video
I've been playing this game since it came out and just learned you could skip the damn tutorial THIS YEAR.
WORD
nell tells you that you can skip the tutorial within the first 2 minutes i believe.
I was gonna tell you that
The tutorial is skippable.
The 13 step tutorial isn't really mandatory. Just complete the last level on the tutorial and then you can play campaign mode.
You can just do the last tutorial and skip all the rest
I've heard about this game for years and I don't think I've ever seen gameplay. Actually looks pretty fun.
I’ve played this and fire emblem, this is the better version the combat is a lot more balanced
It's great!
Even if the tutorial was mandatory (and yeah, it's long) I wouldn't call it a *major* flaw. I wish you had talked more about the soundtrack and the pixel art, they're really one of the things I miss the most about the Advance Wars series in general.
Black Hole Rising is still the best, and the DS one is genuinely a long and challenging game.
funnily enough, the hard campaign of DS actually makes the game easier. Since you get to pick whatever CO you want for each mission.
July 2018 and still playing these games on my original GBA and DS Lite.
You don't need to finish all 13/14 Field Training missions - only Fog of War.
It's too bad the sound quality is worse in DS. The themes of Returning CO's like Colin sound awful.
THANK YOU for a *short* but detailed and objective review!
i'm still on the fence about trying it out, but that's why i came here; to learn more!
*thank you* again
I remember this game being hard AF.
I reflexively saluted when you said "Majr Drag" :)
I loved playing this game. My friends and I would play at school all the time. It had a great multiplayer function.
This is one series I have never played but want to. I love tactical strategy games.
I definitely recommend it, it's amazing, at least 1 and 2, the 3rd game for DS is not as good imo, tried to go a darker route and lost a lot of charm, still a solid game. Yes, Advance Wars 1 has an advance campaign that's hard as hell, definitely harder than all of the other Advance War's hard campaigns.
Mauricio Alonso Garrido i liked days of ruin though.
The fan base is really divided with that game, some like it, others hate it.
Also dual strike is fun.

I specially recommend dual strike for the DS, a few more land units, many new COs, and great new modes and options for custom battles. Days of ruin seems cool too but it's almost a different series.
There is also Rebelstar by Julian Gollop, designer of UFO: Enemy Unknown and Zone of the Enders. If anyone is looking for more games like this one.
Best game reviewer on RUclips. Now time for a super famicom giveaway :)
did SNES Drunk give giveaway?
give giveaway? sounds like you're drunk too :)
the person that i know giving s.famicom giveaway is jimmyhapa. :D
hey man. he
It has fun multiplayer too. I own 4 copys and 4 GBAs and its a blast. Believe it or not part of the fun is the politics of discussing with the other players temporary truces to team up on bigger threats of course you got to be careful because you don't know how long that will last
I loved to play tactical games as a kid. There are some games that I used to play as a kid that I can't even figure out as an adult now.
My all time favorite games on ds and on over 200 hrs on it
I never owned a Game Boy Advance, but I played the hell out of Advance Wars via Visual Boy Advance, really the only strategy/tactical games I could ever get into outside of Fire Emblem. 450 hrs I'd say so. Good job sir. I've got a little over 4 hrs 😏
I'm a PC gamer , I have some of those time in Mount and Blade or total wars Game, after years I'm in the mission 26 for Dual Strike, after playing many games, revisit this one is amazing.

Ahh, so many fond memories of this game! 2 was good as well!
Who's here after the Switch remake announcement?
Another great vid. Would love to see more GBA reviews... Maybe a vid on the snes ports for the system.
Just saw the title/question: ANSWER IS YEEEES xD
Spent hours on this great game :') there is a weiiird glitch for infinite turns tho :p
I clicked on this video to answer the thumbnails question, Yes it is worth playing and I own most of the series in the original format but if they re-released the games in a combo pack on switch I would buy it.
the tactics games never caught on here, cause we had starcraft and the RTS boom of the 90s and early 2000s. advance wars is still an important title.
I remember when I first played advanced wars on the GBA back in the early 2000s and I had such a blast with that game. There's one coming out on the switch. Don't know if it's a remake. Just got interested in the series. I think I'll start on the first on got gba
The second one on gba, Advanced Wars 2 Black hole rising is fucking fantastic. Been playing it for a decade now, thank you emulators
Epic game series. I am playing AW2 at the moment on the GBA :D
Oh dude this game and the sequel was my jam, it's probably the only game I ever went "tourneyfag" for between this and Yugioh worldwide edition, I still play on my phone to kill time when bored and stuck somewhere
Finally, a game that lets me recreate world war 2
Uh yeah actually you do need this. Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, all those rpg luck oriented fucky fuck games are nothing like Advance Wars. But either way, you're wrong. You don't have to complete all 13 training missions. You only have to complete the last one.
If I made a list of video game series that lack a fighter in Super Smash Bros., Advance Wars would be at the top of the list.
The reason why I got the GameBoy Advance was because of this game
I put so many hours into this series as a kid
It isn't perfect but it's as close as it could possibly be, especially for a game that came out so early on.
well you can go to the final mission you can play the the campaign
For a modern twist on this game, check out Unity of command on Steam, if you haven't yet. It's great!
Do that Game have animations for each Battle?
@@julianmunoz7836 Nope
Got it for 0.83
I am surprised that you did not mention the very high difficulty, as you often do.
I wonder if you covered Tactics ogre Knights of Lodis already??
I'm not sure if Fire Emblem, Tactics ogre or games like these are what I would compare Advance Wars to, even if they look very similar. Rather, I find the Advance Wars series to play more like a simplified (and more portable-friendly) version of the old Battle Isle series (a series that used to be quite high-profile back in the days, but seems to be mostly forgotten these days)
If you ever want to talk about time-inefficient battles, review Ring of Red for the PS1. I found that game unique, memorable and fun, but holy hell it was a slog.
Do a video with all worth playing games of this genre!
Love you reviews👍
Advance Wars is ok but I love Super Famicom Wars which is the earlier version so there are more units, there's no "where did they come from?" superpowers and since it's not dumbed down, you have to think a lot more. It's not as good as any Fire Emblem ga... Radiant Dawn? Ok, it's better than that one... but the overall game franchise is a lot more forgiving.
I can easily put both games alongside PC equivalents like Heroes of Might and Magic and King's Bounty. It would have been sweet if Nintendo ported both game franchises when they were made back for the NES.
Look much better than Switch remake
I liked both the Advance Wars games on GBA, as well as Dual Strike on the DS! Days of Ruin however, doesn’t have the same charm as the first three Advance Wars titles
SoLoMoN DaViDSoN and the day of ruins has really LONG tutoriel
I liked Advance Wars. But Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on 3DS is a MASSIVE drag in comparison.
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars is WAY better, especially since there's NO tutorial for it.
I spent hours playing this as a kid.
Did you play drill dozer on GBA?
Great game, super addicting
Great review
I wasn't really into tactics but i did manage to beat one tactic game and mann doesn't it took a long time to beat it..but this game look faster then any Tactic game i played(Tactic ogre)so i might give it a go. :)
The reason TBS games don't take off is because people have low attention spans. TBS is one of the best genres.
Dual Strike is so much better though!
Hey wait! Why didn’t he tell us to enjoy the rest of our day??? It just doesn’t feel right without the regular outro.
Advance Wars in 2020... @¥$& YEAH!!!
How is Advance Wars an RPG?
well..not an RPG,but an SRPG.it's kinda different.an SRPG works like a board game,like ,for example,chess.
But it's not an SRPG either, it's just a strategy game. Superficially it looks very similar to Fire Emblem which *is* an SRPG, but Advance Wars itself has no RPG elements anywhere in sight.
it isnt lol
Hey have you played North & South on NES?
Never heard of it
Well it's a action-strategy game ported from computers of the time with some sidescrolling sections. All done in a bit of a comical style. And you can make the confederacy win in it. 2 player versus as well.
AMAZING back in the day
still love it. really wish there was a new release. same graphics. same gameplay. just bette rmultiplayer/online options
Great review as always! ^^
Have you played any game in the Fire Emblem series?
Volume goes up and down throughout
Great work
And Now you can get 1 and 2 for Switch
actually you can skip the tutorial
great series of games
yep, advance wars days of ruin makes the 1st game worthless. I used to hate the stories and slow movement til it got so much better in the last game. Maybe I should try the DS version 1 day. I just played AW2 and felt it was annoying, especially with those pipe missions. I do respect the fog of war and multiplayer on 1 screen. That I'll admit was fun.
Yes play it no need to watch a video it and the second game are my favorite games on the gba
To skip go to the final step in the tutorial
Best game on GBA
I really liked the first advance wars. The second one was also good, but then they did that weird version for N64 iirc which didn't include any tactics and that 3rd part that was way worse than the first 2 and after that the franchise got dropped :(
Unskipable, condescending tutorials will drive people away.
But yes, this is a nice jumping point for the genre still.
I just wish the story was, well, extant.
playing in 2021. good to go through tutorials
Actually I would say Fire Emblem is more successful than Advance Wars in the strategy/RPG genre
I liked Circle of the Moon...
I wouldn't call this an RPG.
Do a "worth playing today" for the Ogre Battle Saga please
Yes it is.
i fucking love this gaaaame
