I love the whole Toontuber idea and look over the Vtuber style. The cartoon art style has always been my favorite, especially the golden ages 30's-90's.
I agree, but damn that is a long period of time to count as one "Golden Age". That's practically the entirety of animation's existence only excluding the 2000s (which is funny considering the toontuber Scott uses has a very 2000s aesthetic)

Also it allows for young animators practice animation, while also creating a cool Toontuber for videos and streams! Another thing is they feel lively and have lots of personality in their movement compared to Vtubers and PNGtubers. (Vtubers while they track well real person movement, it always felt weird since the model itself isn't real, that's just me, still do love them though. And PNGtubers, well I mean their PNGs you can only do so much) but yeah I'm super excited about this, I hope people start using these because their so fun. There just lil guys!
I honestly would love using the toontuber thing if I ever do get into streaming or just feel like doing certain videos such as reviews much more easily without having to do a face reveal or anything which is great for me... I originally thought that doing such a thing would take a lot of time and editing, but I'm glad that you used a similar system to vtubers while not copying it all together. Props to you, man!
Thanks for the tutorial, this seems like an incredibly cool concept! The best thing about making stuff like this public is that it will slowly, but surely, get better for everyone!
I really love this kind of avatar, from the cartoony style of expressions to the way it's animated just hits all the right buttons. Great work, can't wait to see more of these!
Very nice! I appreciate this! My friend group has been really looking forward to getting her goblin animated and I've been looking for more style variations for my own Live2D Vtuber as well as "visiting guests" that would show up for specific games. This gives more options for interesting characters to bring on board! I'm excited to get to work
This is some pretty great stuff! Hopefully in the future, this whole process could be streamlined into a single program doing all of this stuff, like how Veadotube mini has a separate program which manages all the tuber stuff, and then OBS simply captures that footage.
I've been subscribed to Scott for years now, ever since the first Sig and Tessa, and I'm so happy to see how far he's come! I'll do my best to follow this!

You'd still need a foot pedal for more complicated expressions and animations, and I think it could be possible to implement a "simple" feature like that if someone messes around with how Vtubers code their stuff, but overall this is a great little tool you've made.
hmm, vseeface does have the ability to trigger expressions from your own facial expressions, and the vseeface tracking is open source as openseeface, i wonder if that functionality is also included in openseeface. though using facetracking does mean significantly more cpu usage

Man this is so cool! If only I could draw/animate or had the money to commission! I love how virtual avatars are becoming more and more commonplace and varied, they offer so much creativity and freedom of expression.
The static png form of of this has been a thing for years before vtubers we’re even a thing. Pretty interesting to see something like that coming back again.
I've only recently got into streaming and have already been asked multiple times if I was going to get a Avatar, but nothing really felt like it suited me. Until I saw your Toontuber a few months back. Really appreciate the tutorial. I'm gonna have to find an animator to commission because I think this is the route for me~!
INCREDIBLE stuff! I can definitely see this being yet another option for people to get into streaming, or for current VTubers who might have some games that can’t run while VTube studio is. Good stuff, Scott! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more info!
That video was awesome!!!! Just a reminder that if propper configuration you can use the Advanced Scene Switcher obs plugin that is really complete with lots of functions and I am tweaking it to use with toontubers!! You really inspired me!! PS.: The Scene Switcher plugin can do that too, definitely. The problem is that it has loads of functions and this can be intimidating, but I garantee that it's not complicated at all! Already made a test pngtuber (that can use mp4 and .gifs making it a toontuber) really easily!! If you want to know what I did it was really simple: - downloaded the Scene Switcher plugin, the most recent one - configured it and modified the status `Check conditions every: 50ms` in the plugin settings accessed in the obs - made 2 Macros, one with the condition of `if (Audio) Output Volume of Mic/Aux is above 5%` modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to the talking gif, and the other just the oposite condition to modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to idle And that was it, really simple indeed.
damn, created a way to watch someone and get that feeling of quality animation while at the same time being able to experience it in different variations on the fly. amazing
Fun fact: in Latam, and idk if the rest of the world apart of Brasil and Latam, ToonTubers is the name of an online show of Cartoon Network where Mordecai and Rigby are content creators.
Oh boy, this sent me down a rabbit hole of learning some stuff trying to get StreamFX to work, but ultimately I wasn't able to with OBS 29.0.2 even with the file swap that Scott mentions here. I even tried building my own OBS binaries with CMake, but got walled off by all the dependencies. Hoping the updated versions of StreamFX get public releases soon.
i feel like this can be improved into something that's easier to set up overtime like how veadotube made pngtubing very accessible! toontubing seems to be a very charming middleground between 2d vtubers and pngtubers
With the exception of obs, I've never used a single program mentioned in this video but it sounds so much more straight forward than learning 2dLive was! Thank you for the tutorial!
This is awesome! I really hope people adapt this because this is a really cool idea, and from watching your streams, it gives off just the effect you’d expect
Hopefully this trends really well, so that one day there be someone that can make a software where you can get help animating a toontuber a lot easier.

Ive been wanting to do something exactly like this for when i start streaming, im so glad someone did the heavy lifting of figuring out mostly how to do it so i can work on polishing it out and animating, tysm scott!!
I've been wanting to see how you make your ToonTuber, because this seems like it's gonna be perfect for me! People have said this already, but PNGTubers are just... flat images, and VTubers seem a little bit... too much. Plus, I'm already starting to learn digital art, so translating that into ToonTuber making seems great! Plus it means I don't need to commission a modeler to make a Kirby model for VTubing. I don't even know if that's possible! Also, I LOVE how expressive your ToonTuber is. You're really good at what you do, so keep it up!
God I wish someone who knew what they were doing would remake this tutorial and make it more in depth because i can't even get the examples to work lmfao.
This also can help in ways you didn't expect! Not only is this a much better in-between style, but 'tuber' things can help DID/OSDD members join calls and at least look like themselves if they can't sound it -- at least that's what mine like to use it for!
I've been working on my own Toontuber~ Excited to get it done and start using it. Right now I'm stuck on having done everything right far as I know but the OBS isn't switching from scene to scene. Gah, I wish there was a troubleshoot. XD I know that I'm so close to getting this to work. v.v;
Hey! -I'm just leaving this here in hopes of a more in-depth tutorial for people without Stream FX. I found it a bit difficult to understand what type of Sources the two top pages were, as well as the top and peak sources in separate scenes.- Edit: -There also seems to be a change in the Audio Move Filter, as I couldn't find the Threshold action. Instead it replaced with transform, basevalue and factor.- Solved :D Edit: Figured it all out! It was fun seeing the mouth move and it looks like I'm talking through your mouth. Now time to figure out how to keybind without a stream deck, but it will be helpful
@@Starbonsai So basically if you've done the Sammi bit, you should have 3 media sources already. Idle is currently the top one. Make a new source and title it "TOP-PEAK" (or whatever title to differentiate between the one on top and the one on the bottom) and source the PEAK file. Make another new source and title it "TOP-TALKING" (or whatever title), and put it right underneath the COVER-PEAK. It should now look like TOP PEAK TOP TALKING tuber-Idle tuber-peak tuber-talk make sure all the properties in sources have only Loop checked. In your Microphone, go to Filters. This is assuming you have the Audio plugin. You'll make two "Audio Move" filters. Set both of them as Magnitutde. Put the Action as Source Visibility Set the Scene in ToonTuber Source your TOP-PEAK as one filter, and TOP-TALKING as another filter. The Threshold action should be "Enable over and Disable Under" for both filters. You'll need to mess around with both the Easing and the Threshold, but until you get that figured out you're all set!
@@Starbonsai Hi! Yeah I do have a discord, but I'm not comfortable with sharing it just yet. I have figured it out! I just need to figure out the emotes and it should be alright. The other emotes (like crying, angry, surprised) I think are just making difference scenes and key-binding it so that if pushed the keybind, it would switch to that. But it will be very sudden. I'll rewatch the video to see how he did it ^^
It would be nice if Scott added subtitles, as there may be a part of the audience that isn't 100% fluent in English yet, so just listening won't be enough.
If you can't add mirror sources, your version of streamfx might not work properly with your version of obs. I have obs 27.0 and the streamfx free stable release. I remember I had the same issue with 26.1 obs and 28 onwards.
As someone who doesn't watch/like vtubers at all, I would totally watch ones using this style. Everyone's avatar looks like a creepy loli or just super anime inspired as it is now.

This is amazing!! I’ve always loved you & Lythero’s toontuber and was madly curious how to do it! Thank you!!
Man this is so cool! If only I could draw/animate or had the money to commission! I love how virtual avatars are becoming more and more commonplace and varied, they offer so much creativity and freedom of expression.
So great that you took the time to make this! Hopefully someone out there can help you make this into something even greater!
If you want to know what I did it was really simple:
- downloaded the Scene Switcher plugin, the most recent one
- configured it and modified the status `Check conditions every: 50ms` in the plugin settings accessed in the obs
- made 2 Macros, one with the condition of `if (Audio) Output Volume of Mic/Aux is above 5%` modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to the talking gif, and the other just the oposite condition to modify the ""camera (GIF)"" to idle
And that was it, really simple indeed.
Thank you so much for posting this comment 🙇♀
damn, created a way to watch someone and get that feeling of quality animation while at the same time being able to experience it in different variations on the fly. amazing
Awesome. Gonna try this out as soon as I can. Though I'll definitely get in line if you ever start doing full toontuber commissions
I can't connect sammi without the websocket fixture, and that's not available until after v27. What the heck.
its gonna be tricky getting all my reactions right but I love this! thank you so much Scott!
i feel like this can be improved into something that's easier to set up overtime like how veadotube made pngtubing very accessible! toontubing seems to be a very charming middleground between 2d vtubers and pngtubers
With the exception of obs, I've never used a single program mentioned in this video but it sounds so much more straight forward than learning 2dLive was! Thank you for the tutorial!
This is super cool! A really nice option between PNGTubers and fully rigged VTubers :D
This is awesome! I really hope people adapt this because this is a really cool idea, and from watching your streams, it gives off just the effect you’d expect
I cannot WAIT to see this get popular!!
Thanks for tutorial. I may never use it, but it’s good to know it’s out there.
Hopefully this trends really well, so that one day there be someone that can make a software where you can get help animating a toontuber a lot easier.
I really can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this tutorial! This is something I've wanted to do in the future of my channel, but never knew if it was possible, or even where I could start to find out how. Can't wait to do try this out!
Having seen Lythero do something similar, I can confirm that this works very well, and carries a lot more personality than a model
I love this I'm literally doing this right now and my Toontuber Looks SOOOO CUTE!!!❤❤❤
I'm not a streamer but this being a middle ground seems very much needed can't wait to see what people do with it
Even better than I was expecting Scott. I 'm on the lower end equipment wise myself so this sort of thing is a huge boon for me.
Cartoon asthetic had always been so appealing to me, I hope this absolutely catches on
Ive been wanting to do something exactly like this for when i start streaming, im so glad someone did the heavy lifting of figuring out mostly how to do it so i can work on polishing it out and animating, tysm scott!!
This is such a unique idea, and I love the concept! I’m honestly intrigued enough to make something myself!
Only Scott can make me laugh in a tutorial
I've been working on my own Toontuber~ Excited to get it done and start using it. Right now I'm stuck on having done everything right far as I know but the OBS isn't switching from scene to scene. Gah, I wish there was a troubleshoot. XD I know that I'm so close to getting this to work. v.v;
Hey!
-I'm just leaving this here in hopes of a more in-depth tutorial for people without Stream FX.
I found it a bit difficult to understand what type of Sources the two top pages were, as well as the top and peak sources in separate scenes.-
Edit: -There also seems to be a change in the Audio Move Filter, as I couldn't find the Threshold action. Instead it replaced with transform, basevalue and factor.- Solved :D
Edit: Figured it all out! It was fun seeing the mouth move and it looks like I'm talking through your mouth.
Now time to figure out how to keybind without a stream deck, but it will be helpful
Hey, I'm having the same problem, how did you fix it?
@@Starbonsai
So basically if you've done the Sammi bit, you should have 3 media sources already.
It should now look like
TOP PEAK
TOP TALKING
tuber-Idle
tuber-peak
tuber-talk
make sure all the properties in sources have only Loop checked.
In your Microphone, go to Filters. This is assuming you have the Audio plugin. You'll make two "Audio Move" filters.
Set both of them as Magnitutde.
Put the Action as Source Visibility
Set the Scene in ToonTuber
Source your TOP-PEAK as one filter, and TOP-TALKING as another filter.
The Threshold action should be "Enable over and Disable Under" for both filters.
You'll need to mess around with both the Easing and the Threshold, but until you get that figured out you're all set!
@@avocadojuice Wow thanks, that was really helpful! do you have any contact in case I have more questions? you figured it out right?
@@Starbonsai Hi! Yeah I do have a discord, but I'm not comfortable with sharing it just yet.
I have figured it out! I just need to figure out the emotes and it should be alright.
The other emotes (like crying, angry, surprised) I think are just making difference scenes and key-binding it so that if pushed the keybind, it would switch to that. But it will be very sudden.
I'll rewatch the video to see how he did it ^^
Thank you for sharing this Scott! the momment you shared about it on twitter opened such a bigger broad of possibilities and ideas! its amazing!
Is this similar to what Lythero has been doing with his streams? I've seen a lot of clips of those and wondered what the "magic" was behind it.
Oh wow! Saw this on twitter, and was really mesmerized by the concept. Loved this a lot, thank you !
It would be nice if Scott added subtitles, as there may be a part of the audience that isn't 100% fluent in English yet, so just listening won't be enough.
This is so awesome! I love this a lot and definitely wouldn’t be upset if these become mainstream. Great work!😁
4:24 How do I add the mirror sources I can't get it right
If you can't add mirror sources, your version of streamfx might not work properly with your version of obs. I have obs 27.0 and the streamfx free stable release. I remember I had the same issue with 26.1 obs and 28 onwards.
This has nothing to do with my interests but here's a like and a comment because it seems like a really cool project to spread around.
THIS IS SUPER COOL!! I have been waiting to see something like this for cartoon art styles, I love that there’s so much room for expression!
As someone who doesn't watch/like vtubers at all, I would totally watch ones using this style. Everyone's avatar looks like a creepy loli or just super anime inspired as it is now.
This was a great way to introduce people to how they can setup the tuber. Appreciate you takin the time to show us how you set it up.
Thanks for this tutorial!! I didn't even think about using other scenes as sources in OBS, that's so useful
As a latin guy, i can say there's a section of CN of Mordecai and Rigby playing games called "ToonTubers" sooo... XD
I've been a Png tuber for around a year now but always wanted to have the character animated. I've been trying to do this for so long but I always ran into some sort of problem. Thank you so much for this because I can finally create a toontuber!
This is a great idea, I love the idea of having something like a vtuber model but in your own art style
i have 0 need or want to create a toontuber but im still watching this cause i like hearing scott talk
I love it that you have introduced this idea, and didn’t keep it to yourself! Im sure we are going to start to see plenty more of these around in feed and recommend.
This is great! I had an idea to make something like this but I'm restricted due to my full-time job. I'll take notes and see if I can work on the animations. Thank you so much for working on this out and sharing, Scott!
Software just keeps getting crazier. It truly does amaze me how many commands a CPU can execute in just microseconds to make these kinds of creations come to life. We really are in a golden age of software development. Increasingly though the standards for being a good software engineer continues to rise with compute power.
Ooh! I like this idea, I look forward to seeing how this idea takes off and grows!
Definitely Going to Try this Out!!
Wake up babe, Scott made a ToonTuber tutorial
Scott you have given thyself a kernel of inspiration, the ideas are flowing
If I ever start streaming I'm totally using this
Thanks scott
I will probably dedicate videos about this, i need to watch more people doing this, this is the coolest Vtuber type ever
as a person who enjoys vtuber tech, this is super neat. thanks for the info! i love learning new things
Thank you so much!
I've been wanting to stream for a while with PNGs but after seeing your short on ToonTubers, I've been wanting to be a ToonTuber!!
Thank you!!
YES FINALLY!!!! I was so excited when you announced it! Time to make my own...
This legit makes me feel like i could do livestreaming or something. Very cool dude!
Oh man! I am making my comeback to twitch and have been looking for something like this! Def giving you credit for all this when i stream! Very simple and easy enough tutorial! Much appreciated!
were you able to get the decktext? the link was broken for me.
@@kingegg3125 yeah it worked for me. Was a zip file
Heck yes! I always pondered if it was possible to have a cartoony frame by frame version paralell to vtuber models, and here it is! Dream come true!
Me and a LOT of others have been so excited for this. Thank you THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!! This will honestly revolutionize video content creation. Thank you so much for giving us this amazing piece of technology.
Thank you so muhc for making this! it's nice to see a middle ground that sort of get syou into the funk of learning how to animate :D
I’ve been planning for this for SO SO long, THANKS!
Wow that was sooo much info. But super helpful! I am baby at animating so coming from you, who almost alway has animations in his videos, is awesome.
This was really interesting, even for someone who isn't a content creator or anything. It fells like getting a look behind the scenes, very exciting! So thanks for sharing!
Pretty awesome! Thanks for using SAMMI and a StreamUP Plugin!
(Commented now a third time because it seems YT seems to delete the posts?)
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS TUTORIAL OBSESSIVELY RAAAAA THANK YOU SCOTT 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Oh this is so cool, im sure some if not many storytime animators will love doing this
omg it's finally happening, im loving this idea and cant wait to see how far itll get in the future
