I agree, no one should even be allowed to get their driver's license without knowing how to turn their engine off while driving in case of emergency in the throttle sticks. There's millions and millions and millions of people who don't even know how to do this, there's a famous example of a family in a Toyota who all unnecessarily died because the format stuck on the gas pedal and they didn't know what to do so they called 911 from the car. Imagine if they were required by law to know how to turn the engine off they would all be alive

Robert Brunner ... but at the same time it's replacing something that could have a problem I have owned many vehicles that I've had to replace the ignition on before and after chipped keys
Mine went bad in my Mazda Tribute, "START" doesn't work. Very common problem. I solved that with a $5 button, $1 in wire, and $5 in scotchloks. And I paid too much. :D I don't know how expensive repairs are to cars with push to start. But I do know defeating an ignition cylinder costs pennies to do and dollars to usable.
Thanks for answering some questions. I noted that at 55, you pushed the button OFF, ON, OFF, ON and the engine kept running. What happens if you only pushed the button once at 55 and kept driving for a while, then slowed down to 5 mph or so? Would the engine then shut off? That could be a safety hazard if it does.
On some newer vehicles, it requires either a long press (like 2 seconds) or repeated presses (like 2 or 3 presses very quickly) to turn off the car while it's moving above a certain speed (like 5-10 mph or something). At least that is how it is in my 2020 Camry.
The keyless start is an invention I could've gone without. I've got a Honda Odyssey and the button is about 4-6 inches from the AC button and the stereo power button. I would've preferred it placed where the key ignition has always been, on the side of the steering column so that I don't accidentally hit it out of habit I built up over 25 years with previous cars.
This was the first video I watched on this channel in 2017. After looking at your channel, I subscribed, and now I wait eagerly for uploads. You have amazing content and keep going with what you are doing with your vehicles. Well done, Mike!
If you're ever in a situation where the throttle gets stuck, just put the transmission in NEUTRAL. What's so hard about that? Once you get the car under control and stopped, then shut off the engine. Don't try to just turn off the engine while the car is still moving because you'll lose hydraulics and will have no power brakes. Also, if you have a regular ignition switch with a key, you might turn it too far and lock the steering wheel...then you'll REALLY be screwed.
If your accelerator is stuck and you put it in N, you'll be out an engine! I see it now 7rpm/8rpm/9rpm BOOM 💥 That'll be $2500 plus labor please. You can still drive with the engine off. It's hard to navigate through cones without PS but you can easily maneuver to the curb without PS. A lot of people don't know that you can turn it back one click and not lock the steering, or that you can turn it back to start without starting the engine, and that scares me. That one little area could mean the difference between life and death.
Just remember if you HAVE to do an emergency shut down, you loose power steering and braking - you will have to work harder but the car is still controllable. (Yes, I did have a stuck throttle)
Did it once when I was learning to drive. 1950's Hillman with column change. Going uphill changing down to 2nd managed to pull the reverse catch and drop into reverse. Just locked the rear wheels. Stalled of course, just started up and hoped for the best. No probs.
😂😂 I used to have a 15 kia optima with a push button start and traded it in for a 19 kia forte with a key...ya..I still push on my dash thinking there is a button there. Also, I still push the door handle where on my Optima I could lock my door when I got out....forte doesn't come with that option but I still subconsciously push the door handle thinking that button is there.
How so? The turns a switch and has an RF transponder just like the push button start ignition does. The physical key is a little less complicated when it comes to unlocking and locking of the doors but as far as ignition in modern cars there's really not much difference. My wife is slowly getting used to the keyless ignition system on her new car - she hated it at first but being able to keep the "key" in her purse has been a benefit a few times already. One thing is for sure it's a lot easier to grind the teeth on the the fly wheel with a physical key ignition system - if that's your thing ;-)
Dustin Hart - I get ya - many people think that the system is simpler (key and remote fob) but that's not the case in modern cars. In cars 5-10 years old with "newfangled" keyless systems I'd entirely agree those were unnecessarily complicated and could either be bypassed or weren't reliable - they're much better even a couple years ago. Can they be "hacked" yep - it takes some doing and it would be much easier to tow the car to steal it. If the concern is a physical key for a lock in case the battery goes dead or the fob stops working then most manufacturers include a physical key inside the fob to open the door and the fob can be placed in to a socket to start the car even if the battery on the fob is completely dead. I know I won't convince you - not really trying to - just some food for thought.
Scott Warmbier All I have to say is I've had my old reliable key. I never had any problems with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. No need for the key fobs.
I had an old Oldsmobile Starfire that I had to push to start too. It was a real pain in the back if I needed to go somewhere and I was by myself. It wasn't too bad if I parked it on a hill though. LOL
I remember I had a car that the transmission wouldn't go in reverse. I had to make sure if I pulled into a parking space (like a mall) that it had a slight incline so I could slowly coast back out of the spot. Other than that I would have to push. I remember using that car for the prom. The incline wasn't steep enough. My date (later to become my first wife) steered while I pushed it out the parking spot.
Just got a car with push-button starter, and I'd wondered about that many times. Thanks for doing the research for us. Car is a 2019, so I'm pretty sure it has that same feature.
Because he has to tell average morons like you to be careful. He is not only teaching you something valuable; he is also talking about precautions and safety that idiots like you should know before you go in the road and do something stupid, you damn ass.
attorney1100 i just wanted to know what would happen if we pushed the button while driving, exactly like the title said, is this an issue? Could have been a 1 minute video instead of 5 minutes. All those safety stuff is not necessary because I'm pretty sure everyone here is just curious on what would happen, and not actually want to try this, so calling someone a moron is kind of pointless here
attorney1100 Stop calling everyone morons and idiots. You don't know what other people do and I'm pretty sure most people have enough common sense not to do this.
The trick is to listen to what you just said. You said you were on the highway and you reach down to get your phone when you should be nowhere near your phone when you're on the highway. You should have pulled off to a safe place and then reach for your phone but all that aside your video is very positive so thank you
Thank you for this video; I found it really helpful. What happen if you accidentally pushed the button while driving uphill? Driving uphill may perhaps force you to drive bellow 5mph!
This is actually rather interesting because I was just thinking about this after hearing that someone's accelerator had gotten stuck. I was like can't you just turn the vehicle off and this answered my question. Yes, if you hold the button down it will turn the vehicle off
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL!!! Is it possible to restart the vehicle at highway speeds without stopping and putting transmission in park?
Did you actually check/confirm that it will respond like a normal key if you need to restart engine while moving? I.E Move transmission to neutral, restart engine, move transmission back into drive. Just wondering because you didn't mention starting the vehicle in neutral in the video. I know a lot of these cars with electronic start, and electronic transmissions give you the warning 'vehicle must be in park' if you try to start the engine with it out of park. I was just curious if it would actually even start in neutral (like a normal car would), or if these electronics limit you to only starting in park
Advise i was always given was if your throttle was stuck do not shut the car off but put it in neutral, that way you still have power steering and brakes. The rev limiter will keep the engine from any damage if the throttle was stuck and put in neutral from what I understand.
Pierre Visconti Reading is hard, if put in neutral as stated above the rev limiter will keep the engine from any damage and you will still have power, yes you still have brakes however you greatly reduce stopping distance if the power is on. Also note that if engine is off the steering wheel lock may engage then you cannot steer the car either so please reevaluate your opninion.
Pierre Visconti Lets all just hope sudden acceleration doesnt happen to any of us, I have been fortunate enough to have never experienced it however I researched it diligently because of the toyota camry "sudden acceleration" hysteria of 2010 and I owned said vehicle. I too believed that shutting off the engine was better until I researched the benefits vs the adverse affects of such action and neutral was the preferred solution with limited if any consequences for such a resolution. Take care my friend and again I hope this is something none of us experience.
you have a vacuum chamber, it will operate a full brake manoeuvrer 2-3 times without the engine running, so yes you will have power assist brakes with no engine, as the engine has just been running
Paul Walters nothing would happen if you toss out the key fob while moving! but if you stop the vehicle and push stop then try to restart, it won't start!
The car would continue to drive until you stopped and put it in park. And you would not be able to lock it or get it to drive again. I know because I've tried what you mentioned
I would certainly hope that the steering doesn't lock. While rare, it is still possible to get the accelerator stuck on a modern car. People need to be able to turn off the engine but remain in control. Toyota had issues with stuck throttles only a few years ago and some of those cars had push button start. People panicked and didn't hold down the start button. They were unable to turn the car off because they were only pressing the button for a moment.
mason methot I remember reading stories that the brakes overheated and faded. But one of those stories was with a prius. I find it hard to believe a prius had enough power to melt the brakes. The brakes should be able to overpower the engine if you just stomp on the pedal. Probably an idiot behind the wheel.
Plur307 I've heard that brakes will always beat the engine (even more so on a Toyota :D) O would find it hard to believe the brakes would fade that quickly and fail. But you never know.
mason methot I think you need to keep in mind that it was a prius driver. They have probably never gone over 75 mph before or tried to brake as hard as they can. They were probably terrified.
I have played around with that same function in my 2015 and my 2018 Ford Escapes. Yes, both of these DID shut down when holding the button in for 3-5 seconds at higher speeds. I know one problem with the Ford vehicles, not sure about all other vehicles, but the power steering ONLY works when the car is running AND the key is in the normal "RUN" mode. The steering will NOT function during Remote start function. It is an electric steering module and it VERY difficult to turn when the steering motor is not running. I didn't check that when the key was shut down while driving. Great video to share with everyone!
Bio Power realy then you would have noticed that states with relaxed gunlaws have a lower crime rate compared to most other states with harsher gun laws and that you still need to be 18 to buy them and that a lot of those shootings with comparably high amoint of deaths happend in strict ant gun places
Interesting. I have a Citroen C4 Spacetourer auto/manual that is cleverly designed so you can't do anything that would harm the cars mechanisms. i.e. if you go into reverse at any forward speed the car simply will not respond, you also can't change down so many gears it would over-rev the engine. Also, I accidentally pulled the parking brake lever a few days ago which is just above the glove box lid. The car gently braked to a stop so I realised you could use the parking brake as an emergency brake without damage to the car.
***** yes it is, and i hate that so much, because computers stall alot, and there have been multiple times my neighbor's car, or my parents cars (they all have newer cars with alot of electics in it) have had the computers crash in them, and 1 of the cars stalled (it was a GM) the other two cars kept driving, but the signals and things like that wouldnt work (dodges) So I'm happy with my old hand-me-down, old fashioned Key, Most advanced technology is the radio car
Yhowbyjytub310 . yeah. I know. the owners manual on my 300 doesn't show any pics about anything in checking the tranny fluid or where's it's located. l asked the dealer and they said it's a semi sealed system that only a certified mechanic can check?? wth. Decades ago I was driving my dad's 60 Olds & just got my Dr license living in LA driving about 60 or so & the accelerator suddenly got stuck- Was Scary!..... fortunately, I was able to reach down in a Nano & release it... Thank you for this video
I like having a key to insert and turn. Everything is becoming to automated. I'm good with a button key fob for opening doors but push start went too far for me.
i havent drove a car in a few years because i havent been able to afford it, my dad let me drive in his car and he was looking dumb at me.. first i couldnt find the keyhole.. it was a button i needed to press.. and when i was done driving i used 5 minutes trying to look for the handbrake.. but there is none.. so stupid.
@@dubstepforever99 nooo there is no handbrake that is going waay too far now. That just asking for the car to get damage. But I guess the roads are mostly flat unlike where I am our roads are mostly hill type so we use our hand brakes alot
I was sitting here thinking, not being able to turn it off could be dangerous. I've actually had my throttle stick before - Luckily I was in a manual trans car, I pressed the clutch to avoid hitting the car in front, then shut the car down to avoid engine damage, but this raises another question --- Will your steering lock once you've shut the car off? In my car with a key, I was able to simply put the key back into the on position after the engine had shut down, so that my wheel wouldn't lock.
Redslayer86 you should never shut the car down when the throttle sticks until you've stopped. If you turn the engine off you loose brakes, power steering and risk the steering wheel locking. Your engine can handle redline for 30 seconds. They're designed with a rev **limiter** for that very reason.
The rev limiter is still too high to sustain the RPM. In the manual of my car it even states that when I'm in cruise control I'm not allowed to press the gear shifter into neutral without pressing the clutch or it would result in engine damage within 3s. The only reason this would be in there is because the cruise control would immediately apply full throttle to make up for the loss in speed because it doesn't know the car is in neutral.
I don't think my car has a rev limiter. At least in gear. I drive a 2015 STI and recall one time where I did a "money shift" from 5th gear to 2nd gear, in an attempt to downshift to to 4th. The RPM's went 2.5K over the redline. Does a rev limiter only work in autos or do you have to be in neutral?
Yet again. It is called a LIMITER for a reason. It can handle it. They just put that bs in the manual so some dipshit doesn't ride in on a tow truck complaining his engine blew up because there was no over revving warning.
EagleLogic my 06 5spd Tacoma has a limiter. I've hit it with the clutch disengaged with it in gear, neutral and in first gear peeling out of somewhere...
The Dealer No, it's so they can make more money. If it's keyless ignition, then you need a fob. If you lose the fob, you need to pay upwards of $800 for a new one. From the company.
This information is very well documented in my car's owner's manual (Toyota). Just an FYI - although it is true that holding the button will actually turn off the engine in an emergency, what is not mentioned in the video is that by doing so, you also give up any engine breaking and power-assisted breaking that your vehicle may provide. This will make it possibly significantly more difficult to slow down and stop your vehicle.
Dat Sun Power steering is completely unnecessary when the car is rolling. The steering wheel might be a bit 'stiffer' but that's all. PS is mostly only 'needed' when the vehicle is moving at very low speeds, or to turn the wheel when the car is stopped (like preparing to leave the curb).
john smith When it's rolling? You're probably going to notice it, yes. But to the point of losing control of the car? Nah, not even close. Even without PS, I can still one-hand it to the side of the road without too much trouble. Hell, an old S10 I owned broke its serpentine belt on the freeway one night, and I didn't even know it until the temp gauge was in the red, probably five to ten minutes later. The truck was equipped with PS and I didn't even notice the difference until I slowed down below about 20 mph.
Thank you for posting this video! This is info that every push-button start car owner should know! In much the same way you shut-down a misbehaving computer - press and hold the "power button" and force a hard shutdown - so too, you can shut off a misbehaving automobile. Too bad the driver of the Lexus sedan (in August of 2009) didn't know this... As he and his family were traveling north-bound on Hwy.125 (in San Diego county, California), the throttle [apparently] stuck on the Lexus, and he ended up crashing off the end the highway. They traveled for a few miles as the car gained speed (120 mph at the time of the crash), and he was unable to regain control. Had he had the presence of mind (and knowledge) to press and hold the "start" button, the car would have likely shutdown, and he (and his family) would be alive today. During the 911 call, he was asked if he could turn off the car, but he never responded, and apparently the 911 operator did not know to tell him to press & hold the start button. He ended up crashing off the end of Highway 125, where it intersects a surface street, and he and all of the occupants were killed. This was the major incident (one of several that followed) that prompted Toyota's throttle-pedal recall. Your car is a computer. If it ain't behaving, press and hold the power button!
I have a 2015 Ford Fusion. This is LIQUID GOLD information!!! I HAVE wondered what would happen if the "START" button were accidentally pressed, while in motion. NOW I KNOW!!! I would not have been surprised if you said the car BLEW UP!!! Going from a 2009 Ford Taurus to a 2015 Ford Fusion, I RUclipsd the Fusion, through MANY videos, until I DID know how to operate it!!! RUclips in invaluable in this type of "education!" I truly thank YOU for doing this video to help OTHER Ford drivers!!!
The one and major problem is the steering gonna lock(you know after turning off the car and tilt the steering wheel make it lock),so it can also cause a huge accident.
@@freePalestine65367 The car is still in drive, so when you shut it off with the button, the steering wheel will not lock. You would also have to put the car in park for that to happen. No car manufacturer would cause the steering wheel to lock when shutting off at highway speeds.
As a new driver I always wondered what would happen if I accidentally turn the key off while driving. And then I asked good old Google, which told me it was extremely dangerous. And then I got this video, but it's not relevant to my car which has a key for ignition. So definitely not trying it. But good to know this safety feature is there for cars with a button start.
At 3:40, if your throttle becomes stuck, NEVER turn the car off. You lose steering by doing that. Don’t use the e brake either, you’ll just lose all control and flip over. The best thing to do in that situation is jam it into neutral. That way you still have steering control, and you can gradually slow down and pump the break to help.
It depends on the situation. Where he was in the video you could do almost anything and even turning off the car. If you are in a busy city traffic situation or very winding road and throttle sticks, you may have serious problems no matter what you do because the car is going to coast for some time before completely stopping. I agree with you, it is nice to know what gets shut off on the car when you do press and hold the start button. Just as long as you don't panic and don't do anything.
@@kichappsThe steering column will still turn left and right only a little stiffer but at speed it would be barely noticeable, steering would cease totally if you pulled out the key from the ignition and the steering lock was engaged. Think of this. How did cars steer before power steering was invented ?? The answer is that it was just heavy under all conditions.

Yes, I've experienced this. After reading through the manual of my new car, I tested the functionality. It worked as described.
The push button start feature is just one more thing that can go wrong... BUT, the dealer can fix it ... for about 800 to 1,500 dollars.
Key ignitions also go wrong so whats your point ?
IF you have one and when it goes out ( It will ).. then you'll know my point. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I don't know how expensive repairs are to cars with push to start. But I do know defeating an ignition cylinder costs pennies to do and dollars to usable.
Your estimate is way off. The price is $5,000.
Thanks for doing this. It gives me more sense of security while in these vehicles.
Glad to hear ! Thanks for watching :)
You are welcome! Keep up the great work.
Kolby Slife I always assumed that's how it worked, but thanks for confirming it.

I would've preferred it placed where the key ignition has always been, on the side of the steering column so that I don't accidentally hit it out of habit I built up over 25 years with previous cars.
or if they placed a protection like Lamborghini or if they do like Ford

If i turn AC on, my car starts playing Donna Summer. Until i turn it off.

No car? Lol
Dammitt CJ
🤣
Actual metal keys are better imo
Scott Warmbier Thank you for your input although I still stand firm. I don't like Keyless Entry or Push Button Start.
People had horse and buggies that worked just fine for transportation too...should we have not moved on to the automobile?
Glad you did this I just bought a 2019 fusion with push button start and I'm not doing this at all thank you I appreciate this 🙌🏾🙌🏾

I had an old Oldsmobile Starfire that I had to push to start too. It was a real pain in the back if I needed to go
somewhere and I was by myself.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL!!! Is it possible to restart the vehicle at highway speeds without stopping and putting transmission in park?
Put it in neutral :)
AutoVlog Ok cool. That's what I was hoping you'd say. Thx
Yup, park/neutral switch to ignition is what would cease a start. So either park or neutral :)
I was just curious if it would actually even start in neutral (like a normal car would), or if these electronics limit you to only starting in park
just use manual
Advise i was always given was if your throttle was stuck do not shut the car off but put it in neutral, that way you still have power steering and brakes. The rev limiter will keep the engine from any damage if the throttle was stuck and put in neutral from what I understand.
Pierre Visconti Yes, that is what I have always been taught, and have had to do a couple of times over the past 35 years.
Pierre Visconti not power assist brakes. Try and stop a car or truck with out power brakes.... not fun
A friend of mine has a 2014 Escape Titanium. I will forward this to her. Thanks a bunch and I love the dual camera angles. 🙂
i always wondered what would happen if you toss the "fob key" out of the window while driving
Paul Walters nothing would happen if you toss out the key fob while moving! but if you stop the vehicle and push stop then try to restart, it won't start!
Mentu Hotep ahhh, makes sense
Paul Walters it would just tell you the key was gone
The car would continue to drive until you stopped and put it in park. And you would not be able to lock it or get it to drive again.
I know because I've tried what you mentioned
If you toss the key out the window, it must mean you hate your car /life or both.
to save you time, It literally did nothing.
What about the steering wheel? does that lock? Does the abs stop working?
I would certainly hope that the steering doesn't lock. While rare, it is still possible to get the accelerator stuck on a modern car. People need to be able to turn off the engine but remain in control. Toyota had issues with stuck throttles only a few years ago and some of those cars had push button start. People panicked and didn't hold down the start button. They were unable to turn the car off because they were only pressing the button for a moment.
Plur307 Did they not press the brake? Did they not put it in neutral then press the brake?
mason methot
I remember reading stories that the brakes overheated and faded.
But you never know.
mason methot
I think you need to keep in mind that it was a prius driver.

Am I the only one who hates these buttons??... I like keys.
turowat I love keys mine a 2000 crown Vic lol.
turowat Yeah but car companies can save a lot of money.
turowat I like keys. I feel naked without it
The Dealer No, it's so they can make more money.

Does the steering wheel lock up when you shut the engine off?
I'm guessing that the steering wheel won't lock unless the car is in park. That'd be a pretty big oversight if the wheel did lock while rolling.
nope but would lose powersteering
Dat Sun Power steering is completely unnecessary when the car is rolling. The steering wheel might be a bit 'stiffer' but that's all. PS is mostly only 'needed' when the vehicle is moving at very low speeds, or to turn the wheel when the car is stopped (like preparing to leave the curb).
+xaenon "steering wheel might be a bit 'stiffer'" A bit. lol try a lot.
john smith When it's rolling?

I'm going to do this in my grandma's Maserati.
On most new cars the steering wheels don't have locking mechanisms anymore...
makyael cox your grandma has a fucking Maserati? that's dope
makyael cox ghibli I assume?
dont assume only females assume
makyael cox your grandma is that rich?
Don't try this in your own car ok i'll try this in my neighbor's car
And he will try in your car
That’s funny
At 3:40, if your throttle becomes stuck, NEVER turn the car off. You lose steering by doing that. Don’t use the e brake either, you’ll just lose all control and flip over. The best thing to do in that situation is jam it into neutral. That way you still have steering control, and you can gradually slow down and pump the break to help.
Prestøn Bøurgeøis I was thinking about that when he said it. But this is an issue that I’ve never had to deal with.
This is absolute nonsense about loosing steering. You lose power steering which is only needed when reversing or doing three point turns etc.
@@mrflynn1205 what are you saying bro. If you wanna go left while moving forward, what are you gonna do, use the force?
@@kichappsThe steering column will still turn left and right only a little stiffer but at speed it would be barely noticeable, steering would cease totally if you pulled out the key from the ignition and the steering lock was engaged.
Think of this. How did cars steer before power steering was invented ?? The answer is that it was just heavy under all conditions.
