Guess Maxwell is starting to have a bit of competition on the whole “ruining your life for fun” thing, first the poor guy stuck under the rubble, then his assistant/coworker better known as Wx-78, then the spider he took to Webber’s father to study, later on Winona attempting to “save” him even though he could just have used the projector, and soon Wilson who ended up in his research Shack with the Voxola radio that got Wilson tricked. I like to imagine whenever wagstaff is fighting something or doing something intensive he is just running like a madman in front of the projector, and any time the game lags its just him running out of the light on accident.
So that is how Wagstaff was able to project himself and his tools into the Constant. He just puts them in front of the projector, and the shadows manifest as semi-real objects. (I doubt anyone will understand this reference or even read this considering that this is in reply of a comment near the bottom, but I like writing out my thoughts so I am going to do that) Realized a bit of a connection between this and a video game called Stellaris. In that game, there are things called crisis paths that make you a major threat to the whole galaxy, with one already existing and one being about to release (as of writing this). What is interesting is I feel these two crisis paths line up with the two "alignment bosses" of Charlie and Wagstaff. The currently existing crisis path in Stellaris is where you are blatantly trying to ascend to a higher plane of existence by destroying the rest of the galaxy, infiltrating and destroying all other empires from the inside and outside, and other empires are either treated as enemies or slaves. Similarly, Charlie, the "old alignment boss," is bent on summoning a being that will likely destroy the entire planet in its summoning (considering some lore that I can't explain in just a small reply), and Charlie only treats the characters as pawns to manipulate for her ends, while outright showing up to destroy beings that stand in her way (ancient fuelweaver). However, the new Stellaris crisis path that was announced is a bit different. Instead of blatantly being corrupted by dark powers and being guided to destroy the galaxy as in the old path, in this new path you are merely searching for improving your technological power to the point of being able to alter the very fabric of the universe. Here, the whole crisis comes from just your general apathy to what your experiments do to the rest of the galaxy, you are still totally willing to help others and treat them as near equals or pupils, but your main goal is to build a new universe for yourself, and if in doing so a few (billion) people need to be abducted or die to some minor after effects of wormhole opening, then so be it. This lines up really well with Wagstaff, as he is not only a scientist seeking to alter the fabric of reality with lunar magic, but he also seems to treat Wilson as a near equal or pupil, and he does seem to have some care to the people around him. However, he is more than willing to steal to get the resources he needs, and his actions are ripping tears in reality and summoning destructive beasts, to which he feels no responsibility to clean up after.
I think he also uses Wilson’s portal because how else would he move. Maybe he combines the reel and projector with the portal to make just hazy projections into real sci-fi holo-people
Wow! Immediately after seeing the shadowy film I thought "oh, it's maxwell's last performance, isn't it?" Very clever klei, and than you for confirming how wagstaff is projecting himself into the constant! Keep up the good work, love you all :)

Love that you can subtly see him steal each item as he goes; his hand on the lady's pearls, the ring slipping off the man's fingers, the man with the cane not having it when he gets thrown out. I'm sure the Survivors will be completely fine with this trustworthy fellow!
Yes, Wagstaff's skills are certainly good, but he comes out no better than the same Charlie, who is also ready to manipulate people for her own personal goals.
Worth noting first mention of Wagstaff was all the way back in 2013, on the forums: "The radio is a Voxola PR-76, manufactured in 1919 by the Voxola Radio company of Sidney, Ohio. The radio offered revolutionary sound and reception quality for the time, and was promoted by an intense national marketing campaign. Very few units were actually produced, because the factory was destroyed in a fire only days after production began. Voxola founder Robert Wagstaff went missing the night of the fire, and the company declared bankruptcy soon thereafter." This is 1906, obviously. He has 13 years from here to establishing the factory. We know from Interference that Wilson found one of his prototypes (presumably The Prototype). What else is he doing in that gap?
For I moment I was like "Wait Wagstaff wasn't a bad guy?" Then I saw what had actually happened and I was like "Oh... oh yeah that makes more sense." This looks cool though, projecting yourself into another dimension using a haunted projector might be the most creative little lore pieces I have had the luck to learn about in a long time

I always knew he had grain and dust like a film projector, but it being because of the same film reel we saw Maxwell use for the secret video is an amazing revelation, I always assumed it was his own tech since he has a craftable teleporter. Also I kind of respect Wagstaff (Don't Starve) more because of this video, he may have been mischievous by stealing, but he still tried to help those he could during the quakes
Wagstaff has always been one of the most interesting characters to me, he's great at seeming like a good business man on the surface while secretly being a psychopath. To think we would never have had him if not for Hamlet.
Technically Wagstaff did exist pre-Hamlet, but only in the form of 1 blog post made by a developer to add background information to the PR-76 Radio. Hamlet is what made Wagstaff into the actual character we know today.
As someone whose not familiar with Wagstaff's lore, this short was genius. Seeing him help others is like, "okay, he seems to be a decent guy." Then you see him running out with the camera and it's a little odd but like, "Okay, maybe he couldn't help the guy and is trying to see what happened." THEN he empties all the stuff onto the table and you're hit with whiplash like, "Oh. No. No, he's definitely a greedy jerk." Going back and rewatching for the moments he takes things too because it was straight up right there in front of you but don't notice the first go round is honestly just great. Takes me back to Brain Games where they had the guy asking for directions the entire time and then afterwards they reveal, "Cool. You remembered the directions. But did you notice the guy getting robbed?"
Yeah, just drop on us such a big lore bomb Klei, very cool. Wagstaff used to be poor and a thief. He uses the projector to transport himself as a projection into the constant. He is in Wilson's old house after the Celestial champion fight, and he uses the radio to project himself there? So he has 2 ways to project himself into constant now?
how is this a big lore bomb? it just shows a little bit of his past as a thief and how he learned of the constants existence. we obviously knew he could project himself into the constant, we just didn't know how. and the tech he uses currently in-game may still be a little bit different/advanced.
I would say that the radio method previously belonged not to Wagstaff, but to Maxwell, but with the arrival of Charlie, radio began to be practically unused, as a result of which it went to Wagstaff
This is very unexpected, to be honest. I didn’t expect to see animation today, but I’m even glad. The art, as always, is on the level, and I also liked that the animation revealed the essence of Wagstaff’s personality. He didn't save the person, but he saved the Projector. I also love the references to past animations, such as Maxwell's performance on that Projector tape. Thank you Klei for making us happy like this :)
I really love Wagstaff being depicted as so selfless up until he returns home. I realized that he was just doing this for his own benefit the moment I saw the stage - he had just come there so he could steal whatever was left from Maxwell's magic show
Truly fascinating. After years, the revelation that Wagstaff’s odd static form is because of what he found at the performance’s ruins is intriguing. Incredibly well done animation as always!
As soon as I saw the stuff he stole I remembered his quote from Shipwrecked about selling snake oil! It's really neat getting to see stuff implied about character's histories so long ago come up again.
I was watching and was like: the Wagstaff we know doesn't help people?? Or have compassion ...whats going on?? Then it showed he was only helping so he can steal. That made more sense.
He stole all their items, so he didn’t exactly do it out of the kindness of his heart. He did help them though which counts for something, just not much
If this is the intermission between updates, then I'm excited to see what comes in a full content drop! (Side note: that pocket watch and cane look eerily similar to what Wagstaff wears in Wilson's firewood guide...)
I'm really happy to waking up and finding the notification for this on my face! Also; I think it's interesting and possibly say a lot about Wagstaff that he rather save an object over another person, another life.
Clay, have you seriously started developing the plot further?... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Now he really explains everything, how Vakstav could even now apply to the constant! 🥰😍🥰
Interesting. At the time he learns of the existence of the Constant, he appears to be in about his 40s - 50s. Judging by the way he looks at present, it's been only around a decade up to present time. Meaning that he went from a jobless grifter to a learned scientist in a reasonably short span of time. This backstory also reframes Webber's short, as the spider sent to his father might not have been a gift to a research partner, but merely selling some of the Constant's curios for cash, which might have been necessary to fund the Voxola start-up. And furthermore, now that we know where he came from, what does this mean for where he's going? Does he have a genuine reason to delve into the heart of the Constant? Or is it merely in search of further profit (his company did go bankrupt, after all). Though considering his advanced age and his apparent withdrawal from society, I have to assume he's found something worth looking for besides material wealth.
Honestly the "projection" into the constant being wagstaffs shadow on the film reel is such a cool concept. Also makes you wonder about the nature of constant in general, is it literally a film reel, infinitely being rewound to watch again, with new imperfections each time? Either way, super amazing animation!
This is amazing. This is the kind of lore short that I like to see! Actual backstory, tons of subtle details and little hints, some apparent explanations but also more questions. And no dialogue. Klei is excellent at wordless storytelling. I feel like my intelligence is respected by videos like this.
Fascinating how just a character from DLC Hamlet became so important in Don't Starve lore. Maybe it was meant from the beeggining? Anyway it's awesome!
I think wagstaff truly went in there to help people, but he just couldn't pass up an opportunity for an easy payday. which means there's a multifaceted aspect to him. Both considerate and greedy.
Fantastic. I was hoping we would get back into some deep lore. Makes a lot of sense for Wagstaff to first learn of this dimension(s?) after the disaster, and it makes even more sense to see his priorities when amongst the rubble. Leaves plenty of time for him to develop the radio, make contact, steal a spider, build a portal... And of course the idea that the film itself held a trace of the Shadow such that a projection of it could reach through into another reality...
Holy hell, sure came here early. Thank you, notifications, I couldn't have done it without you- Klei, buddy, pal, you don't know how fast I clicked on this video right when I saw it. Thank you for the game and for not neglecting it. You all who are working here are awesome!
You save a bunch of people. He is smart enough to understand that he had no way of rescuing the guy who was gonna get crushed by revol he just calculated his ability to resque people. But yahh he also was robbing people so morally gray he is at best
Klei, in all honesty, you make THE BEST lore ever. No other game can compete with you when it comes to the story you build. And you don't even need long animatics to do so. You are truly amazing!
The earthquake that occurred was caused by Maxwell's last performance! The theater and the stage setting decorations are the same (the cloud, the constant-style trees)! I feel like this may help us quite a bit with the timeline of the game's lore... :))
1:22, I KNEW he was rotten! He always struck me as bad! Finally Klei gives us the evidence XD And a very interesting look into how he might be accessing the constant at his remote distance. So much lore to ponder here...
This animation show us what really happened after the maxwell's show incident, also the news report of a earthquake. And it's cool that we discover how wagstaff enters the constant like a hologram. Keep it going with this don't starve animations klei ^_^
Wagstaff is clearly a thief or at least a kleptomaniac. You can see him stealing the pearl necklace of the old lady, the gold ring of the man with the top hat, the walking cane and pocket watch of the man with the bowler hat and the recorder from the stage worker. It is also implied that he chose to steal the recorder instead of helping the stage worker but this is not known. Judging by his patched up clothing, poor living/working conditions and him scavenging trough trash, it could be concluded that he is poor (although he still manages to own a car) so it might be that he started stealing because of poverty or he is simply a greedy man. He is certainly very skilled at stealing judging by him coldblooded stealing from victims of an earthquake while being in peril himself but at least he saved (most) of those people even if it was for his own gain.
Interestingly, we now know that like 40 years ago, during Maxwell’s performance, Wagstaff already knew about Constant. I wonder what the scientist has been doing all these years, and why he became interested in Constant. Maxwell, meanwhile, dragged Wendy away to Constant a couple of years later. And Wendy wanders and dies in this world for decades without aging. About 5 years later, after Wendy, Maxwell took Wolfgang to Constant, and another 20 years later, Maxwell took Wigfried.
It seems to me that Wagstaff, just like Maxwell, did experiments on moving different people into a constant (which we can actually see in example WX-78)
Its been awhile since i've played dont starve together and from everything i've seen i have alot of content to get through now. Honestly this game seems like the gift that wont stop giving.
I've tried to get in contact with streaming services to ask about a don't starve show but they're so delicate, you need agents and people backing you up to even have someone listening to you.
haveing a villain who like wagstaff who doesn't enjoy others suffering but would sacrifice people for his goal is really cool. there's something so rotten but human about it.

Also I kind of respect Wagstaff (Don't Starve) more because of this video, he may have been mischievous by stealing, but he still tried to help those he could during the quakes
yes it *IS* his own tech. this seems to have happened in the past. the wagstaff we know looks much older.
I'm not sure whether this dude is good or evil.I mean, we don't know the reason behind why he steals objects.Maybe there's a good reason behind it

Wagstaff being a sly son of a gun doesn't surprise me
Wagstaff has always been one of the most interesting characters to me, he's great at seeming like a good business man on the surface while secretly being a psychopath. To think we would never have had him if not for Hamlet.
Technically Wagstaff did exist pre-Hamlet, but only in the form of 1 blog post made by a developer to add background information to the PR-76 Radio. Hamlet is what made Wagstaff into the actual character we know today.
wagstaff don't starve
you're lying
wagstaff don't starve
Truly one of the comments of all time.
Wagstaff: Don't starve
engineer team fortress
I loved it when Wag the Staff said "it's waggin' time" and staffed all over the place
Don't forget the part where the wag and the staff wags
Yeah, just drop on us such a big lore bomb Klei, very cool.
Wagstaff used to be poor and a thief.
He uses the projector to transport himself as a projection into the constant.
He is in Wilson's old house after the Celestial champion fight, and he uses the radio to project himself there?
So he has 2 ways to project himself into constant now?
Well wagstaff being poor and a thief adds up since he was a snake oil salesman
how is this a big lore bomb? it just shows a little bit of his past as a thief and how he learned of the constants existence. we obviously knew he could project himself into the constant, we just didn't know how. and the tech he uses currently in-game may still be a little bit different/advanced.
I don't think he was "poor". Wagstaff clearly already knew what was going on here before even Maxwell
When I saw that the film reels were possessed by the Shadows I immediately knew where this was going.
I really love Wagstaff being depicted as so selfless up until he returns home. I realized that he was just doing this for his own benefit the moment I saw the stage - he had just come there so he could steal whatever was left from Maxwell's magic show
You really can't beat these Klei character shorts. So good!
Truly fascinating. After years, the revelation that Wagstaff’s odd static form is because of what he found at the performance’s ruins is intriguing. Incredibly well done animation as always!
When the staff wags idk i never played the game
Lmao real
@@DRofRUclipsreal or fake
@@Dilbot1000 depends
I haven't played game too. But even I can confirm that Wagstaff's indeed wag'in 'round.
when gen z use the same joke format over and over again because being creative is too much to ask
It's interesting how the eartquakes were mentioned in the Wigfrid animated short "The Curtain Calls", there was a newspaper article on 0:03
They should definitely make an animated series or movie about this game.
Wagstaff actually did something to HELP someone!? Unheard of.
He was Sterling from all the victoms
You can see that he stole their gold valueables when he goes back home sooo... not really lol
he let the guy die , how sad
Nah, he was just stealing
He stole all their items, so he didn’t exactly do it out of the kindness of his heart. He did help them though which counts for something, just not much
NO WAY !!! WAGSTAFF WAS ON THE PLACE AFTER MAXWELL'S AND CHARLIE'S LAST PERFOMANCE?!?!? DUDE, THIS IS MIND BLOWING!!!!!!
If this is the intermission between updates, then I'm excited to see what comes in a full content drop!
(Side note: that pocket watch and cane look eerily similar to what Wagstaff wears in Wilson's firewood guide...)
It all makes sense now how he can project himself into the constant. very clever klei, love these animations
I love when wagstaff wagstaffed all over the place.
My favorit time was when wagstaff sead that its wagstaff time
these animations with the little lore snippets are always so great 👍
I'm really happy to waking up and finding the notification for this on my face!
Also; I think it's interesting and possibly say a lot about Wagstaff that he rather save an object over another person, another life.
Clay, have you seriously started developing the plot further?... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Now he really explains everything, how Vakstav could even now apply to the constant! 🥰😍🥰
YES!! Been waiting to find out how Wagstaff projects himself in the Constant. I cannot express how much I love DST lore.
So that's why he flickers in and out of existence.
0:43 Wagstaff steals both of the rings off of the father's hand during the handshake. That is some incredible detail.
Wagstaff don't starve
Wagstaff looks so important in the story, he literally founds a form to interact with the constant without enter in the constant
You all who are working here are awesome!
and that is how he is able to project himself into another world. amazing!
You save a bunch of people. He is smart enough to understand that he had no way of rescuing the guy who was gonna get crushed by revol he just calculated his ability to resque people. But yahh he also was robbing people so morally gray he is at best
OMG.....There is soooo much lore in such a short video I love this game very much and its lore is just perfection
Klei should work with Tim Burton for making a Don't Starve movie. Awesome series, awesome clips. I like this game's gothic atmosphere.
What I love about the DST animated shorts is they tell the audience so much about the characters without using any words
This animation show us what really happened after the maxwell's show incident, also the news report of a earthquake.
And it's cool that we discover how wagstaff enters the constant like a hologram.
Keep it going with this don't starve animations klei ^_^
This was very well-made! I really didn't see the twist coming of Wagstaff stealing from the people he rescued. These animations are amazing!
So wagstaff came to the constant for the first time right away. Interesting
These are always awesome, but man if I'm not just totally impressed by the quality. Have been enjoying your games since 2012, thank you Klei!
This lore is getting even deeper. I can't wait to see what else turns up!
Awesome video. Now time to watch it.
Man these videos are so cool, they should make a game about these animations
Wigfried lmao
Minor spelling mistake:keep it like this anyway.
It seems to me that Wagstaff, just like Maxwell, did experiments on moving different people into a constant (which we can actually see in example WX-78)
@@Cerealbaurwigfrid except she only eats fried meat.
wigfried.
or maybe her wig is fried?
It is confirmed then. Constant is not flat
wagstaff really looks like wilson in this short, lore thickens
I’m so glad to see more information revealed about Wagstaff! Absolutely stunning animation - I don’t even know where to begin! ❤
Its been awhile since i've played dont starve together and from everything i've seen i have alot of content to get through now. Honestly this game seems like the gift that wont stop giving.
At 0:43 when the man shakes Wagstaff's hand, he has a ring. When hes done shaking the hand, the ring is gone.
Amazing attention to detail!!!
so happy that we're gonna start getting intermissions, I live for these animations!
I’m telling you, we need a Don’t Starve show
I've tried to get in contact with streaming services to ask about a don't starve show but they're so delicate, you need agents and people backing you up to even have someone listening to you.
I can't describe how much i love the game, the devs, and the community here, thanks again for a wonderful don't starve short❤
I love how you can even see the man missing his staff when Wagstaff takes him out of the door. He's a really good thief...
Amazing work as always from klei, absolute brilliance!
haveing a villain who like wagstaff who doesn't enjoy others suffering but would sacrifice people for his goal is really cool. there's something so rotten but human about it.
Woah thats so cool!!! Amazing job as always, Klei! 💕
Rewatching it and you can see him steal the valuables from the people.
Ooo this is a juicy one! The timing of stuff is especially interesting!
Wagstaff doesn’t care about the life of others or machines jeez. We love those intermissions Klei !
The man literally can't stop being a problem that multiples the problems we already have
So that's how he transports himself within the constant. Interesting and very cool
LET’S GOOOO
wagstaff is the next DST character confirmed
My heart skipped a beat when i saw the "wagstaff animated short" , well played
man, how on earth every time they make me having goosebombs? 😃
I love the fact that, you can watch the unlisted video about Maxwell's origin here
