oh my god, it felt amazing seeing charlie after all this time, plus going more into depth about their relationship before the events of dont starve, absolutley phenomenal.
This short has some SERIOUS implications. Previously, all the shorts have shown the characters' backstories. This one also did that, but it also set up something pretty significant for the future. They are definitely planning something big for the future. With one person turning traitor, it's likely that the story will start moving towards the finale. Maybe a few more will turn traitor (like Willow), but my prediction is that Wilson's character refresh will show him starting to make significant progress in escaping the Constant which will lead to a big update (after some time obviously) that either adds an end game where the group defeats the beings who trapped them there, or adds a new area/boss to set things up to fight those beings. The only thing I'm really not sure about is how the gameplay will reflect Maxwell turning traitor, unless of course he didn't actually turn traitor and is just deceiving Charlie to get more information and the true enemies.
He may resolve to use the power to save her. After all Maxwell is not a fool, he’s always been opportunistic. I’m interested to see how this goes, and lean on the side that Maxwell will NOT turn traitor.
wilson already got to the bounds of the world and got to the last world and meet the chairman(pun intended)it looks like charlie discovered a way to block the movement between the worlds so it may be harder to progress to the end world
Hey! Why am I getting singled out? Just because I might have "borderline personality disorder" or "outstanding arrest warrants in 37 states" or "a blood pact with Mr. Skitts" doesn't necessarily make me untrustworthy.
Unfortunately for me my vote goes to the upcoming Dwarf Fortress but hell yeah the amount of effort Keli put into this series is amazing and should also be recognized
1:54 is Wilson's hair along with the latin word 'pretiositas', which from my 10 second google search means either preciousness or costliness. Along with Wilson not being on the second chessboard, I think it's safe to say that Wilson's short will be very important for the lore of don't starve.
@@confusedbees I think they're "canon", but Charlie doesn't view them as worth keeping track of in her master scheme because they're creatures native to the Constant helping out the survivors, rather than people dragged into it. That still doesn't explain Wanda or Webber's absence, though.
The fact that Maxwell apparently didn't learn anything from his time as a survivor and so easily made a deal which turned him into a pawn is... So tragic. Amazing animation, as always.
More than betraying max probably is doing it out of love…because honestly, Charlie is playing with his heart, it’s looks like what they had was a short lived love but one that both had but it never flourished because of Max isolating himself and then we know what happened next..so it’s probably her playing with his heart strings to betray everyone
@@raf6213 Idk about love because you can do just that to a close and only friend (She's the only one who supported his interest in magic) but imo it doesn't matter why he did that, that's still betrayal.
It's really incredible how Klei can convey such complex emotion through their shorts without using any spoken dialogue. The composition of this short was absolutely fantastic.
Let your favourite streaming / tv provider know you'd be interested in one, we'd be open to talk. But we'll continue making our own shorts regardless on our RUclips channel!
@@kleient I feel like a show wouldn't fit the tone of the story as well as the current cocktail of shorts and gameplay, but then again the klei writing team are mental and they'd probably do it really well. either way, good job! keep it up!
It seems Maxwell made this deal out of both guilt and the love he had for Charlie. He has never forgiven himself for what happened to her, and seems to think doing this will make it up to her. Beautiful story writing Klei, as always
I remember getting to see all the Maxwell stuff coming out as a kid, I think I was 10 when I first saw Don't starve, now I'm almost 20 and I still always get so giddy whenever I see this strange story continuing
I first found Don’t Starve in 2015 when DST was a weird beta thing that had no connection to the story yet. I was so invested in the lore, and it was amazing when it was revealed that DST was not only canon, but a sequel! I loved the “William Carter Puzzles” and then the reveal that Charlie had replaced Wilson on the throne, officially ending the beta phase of DST, was so cool! It’s so nice to come back and see that the story is still going!
I’ve been following the game for almost a decade, since I was 13 and seeing all the callbacks made me tear up a little. Fantastic animation and I’m so excited to see the story moved forward. I main Maxwell and I’m joyous to see him in a fraction of his past glory
Me too, and I miss the original feel of the game. Now it holds the hand a lot and is aimed more towards casual players. Still, great animations as always Klei! They are amazing
It's incredible to see how far Don't Starve as a game has come, seeing pieces of one of the first big lore animations in this gave such a hard wave of nostalgia. I grew up with this game and it still gets me excited seeing the ambitious updates that are being announced by Klei. Huge love to everyone working behind the scenes on this game, and, if you guys ever stop updating Don't Starve the game, please end the franchise with a movie, all of us here would be more than thrilled to see it!
I love these animated backstories so much! They fit all the characters so well and don't seem out of place, like they've been here since the beginning of the game.
Seeing the parts of the old William Carter puzzles animated felt really awesome to someone like me who’s been following the lore pretty much since the game’s release. The new developments made here are extremely interesting and I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next!
I really like Klei's artstyle animation,It may be less detail but really unique, I would like to see another animation like that in the future. Best of luck for your studies

@@austinborden5667 "Alter" is not a real name for the god on the moon. It's just our best guess, also, they are kind of just interchangeable. "That's not the moon, that's alter" isn't all that correct considering they are pretty much the same.
I still remember the day I've played Dont Strave Beta on my College's computer lab (they didnt restrict websites yet) and I didnt knew what was going on and killed rabbits. Today its a massive game with huge lore. I will always love these Dont starve animations.
I wonder if the absence of Wilson on the chessboard indicates something, despite the fact that there are few characters missing, maybe they all will be placed on it after their reworks. The short was so marvelous that I've lost my words thinking about all of it. After 8 years of sitting in everything Don't Starve-related I can't help but to be intrigued by all of the effort put in it's franchise and I'm so very glad that I could see and experience the game, lore and everything else. To be fair, Maxwell was always trapped and never really had any real power. The Constant was more of just his personal project to keep him occupied while the shadows did what they needed from him. Now he’s stuck surviving in that weird place where he is basically a former god, which was nothing more than a canvas for his weird projects to keep him occupied while he lured others to take his place.
I knew this trailer was gonna be the most interesting, but man it still blew my expectations, not only did it give us lore to chew on, but also gave us a story spanning to both Constant and Earth!
I just noticed that there are 12 chess pieces in the chess board at 3:17, mawell is the only black piece, all others are white chess pieces, in a normal game of chess, both players has 12 chess pieces, someone else pointed out that all the monster based characters are missing, wilson is also missing, for some reason, maybe the missing pieces are considered wildcards? Wilson reacted to maxwell's rose whe he got up, wurt, wormwood and wortox native to the constant and webber is half human, half spider, makeing them litteraly half native, either way, there has to be a reason why these characters are missing from the chessboard at this point
What about DLC characters? The in-game reason why Wheeler, Wilba, Woodlegs and Walani are not with the rest of the survivors is because they belong to DLC content but, what is the storyline reason?
Well the monsters aren’t there because they belong in the constant, Webber is something, I don’t know if Webber was in the constant originally but regardless most monsters do not make the cut that belonged in the constant
I like how the scene with chessboard at 3:15 only has the characters reworked so far. That means charlie changed their powers to make a use for her not maxwell that originally gave them their powers. I think of it that way because there isn't a wilson figure there who hasn't had a rework yet and any of the new characters: wanda, wurt, wortox and wormwood.
@@marxtrash well my persoanl theory on webbers absense is due to the fact he is both a human of our world with a soul and all AND a monster of the constant

Wow! Amazing animated short! Seriously blew away my expectations with everything y'all managed to squeeze into it. Seriously still wishing for a full animated show, and huge props for making them all so good!
I love how DST doesn't look like it would have a big story to it but then you see these animations and go like HOW FAR DOES THIS GO??? And you wonder how far they'll go I'm excited to see his rework on console

@@antynomity well, his as much of a victim as everyone here. The one thing he cares the most is Charlie (probably) so if that means colab with other. He probably do it. He's opportunistic after all, but everyone have their goals
I think it’s gonna be a story arc We know that Maxwell’s wants is to seem bigger and more important to be the people around -obvious from his dapper and demeanor His needs is probably to be accepted by the people around him I imagine he is either about to betray them then reels back cause the power of love
Okay, current observations: Charlie offers Maxwell extra powers (I'm not sure.) The chess pieces are black and white, the characters are white meanwhile the monsters are black. Maxwell's piece is black after he took the rose. Traitor? After Maxwell stood up he is slightly taller than the other characters. Body proportions were always a bit off in Don't Starve, but this time I think it's used as a plot point. Charlie is trying to get more allies, possibly for a big plan in the end.
I'm not sure if on 2:02 it was just a "Spliced footage" effect where memories or whatever are getting mixed up or something. But maybe Maxwell was lucky enough to find the chair when he was first brought into that land. Charlie in the other hand probably had to survive the whole time to find her way out. and everything led her down into the Atrium. Activating the portal, she probably saw something. Whatever They are. But it also probably summoned or revived the Ancient Fuelweaver, attacking her and either killed her but she was gravely hurt and They took 'Pity' on her imbued her with their powers, nightmares fuel. To not only in a way revive her but give her unfound powers, making her who she is now. Manipulating her, whispering things to her. having her fix the portal again and activating it for whatever purpose. Maybe she knows what it really does or she THINKS she does. Whatever is happening, even Maxwell is confused on what she's got planned.
Whatever happened between the fuel weaver and Charlie, you can clearly see via the death animation of fuel weaver that Charlie doesn’t exactly like him

I am worried for our favorite scientist As always Klei this is another absolutely brilliant and masterfully done animation! The LORE T H I C K E N S AND I ALWAYS WILL BE HERE FOR IT Thank you for your generosity and hard work!
@@Just_a_Dude80 of course But the ones that do appear here are in the first scene pieces, where it shows Maxwell along the other survivors as white pieces, you can see that Wilson is there, but AFTER Charlie gave the new rose to Maxwell and we see again the chess pieces but Maxwell being a Black chess piece now with the rest of other survivors who are White chess pieces, everyone but Wilson, who is nowhere to be seen. That could mean that Charlie is planning something with Wilson or something is going to happen to him.
Maxwell has been, and continues to be, my favourite character. Since playing the Don't Starve Web version and tinkering with Science Points, all the way to playing almost solely as him in DST, this has been a moment I've been waiting for. Good show, Klei.
MAXWELL WHY?!? YOU ALREADY KNOW IT DIDN'T WORK OUT SO WELL THE FIRST TIME!!! Amazing short as always Klei! I look forward to what's in store once we get the new roadmap!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Maxwell's been my favorite character since the first game, all the hidden lore, pictures, comic, adventure mode, that first short about him and Charlie. And nowadays I felt the lack of him in the story, nice to see him finally interact more with the group. I always wondered how would they treat him considering he's the reason everyone's in this world, but it seems they forgave him and actually care. And it was great to see him interact with Charlie for the first time within this world. Can't wait for more lore!
i'm sure netflix wouldn't think twice about agreeing to do a mini series of dont starve together, it has so much content that it would make a lot of amazing episodes, maybe showing more of the characters' stories
I have never had my itch for the Don't Starve lore come back this quickly as it has watching this! It's crazy how once upon a time I pieced this together, now DST is putting all the of it out there. As always the animation team did an amazing job!

Fun fact: There are 4 survivors who do not appear on the chess table anytime Wortox, Wormwood, Wurt and Wanda While Wilson only appears on the first time and is absent on the second
The music in all these shorts doesn't get enough credit! I wish there was a way to listen to their scores separately. Nonetheless, fantastic cinematic! Can't wait to see what's next for DST!
Klei, thank you for bringing this stuff to light again, as an older fan of this series of games i followed the old ARGs as a kid, i know ALL this lore and it’s great to see it not only not retconned but shown to the masses at last, this brings me the most joyful of memories and i can’t wait to see what’s next.
I’ve been waiting years for some Maxwell lore! As the original villain of the game it’s great to see him expanded and the William Carter puzzle pieces animated fully. It seems his intermission is finally over!
I love it so much! We've looked deeper into Maxwell and Charlie's past relationship, and we're getting potential for new developments in the story moving forward!
Please, please, not now, not tomorrow, but years down the line, please tell me that one day this interconnected story gets a satisfying conclusion. All these awesome moments of lore drops, I so hope it won’t end in a quiet limbo.

1:54 is Wilson's hair along with the latin word 'pretiositas', which from my 10 second google search means either preciousness or costliness. Along with Wilson not being on the second chessboard, I think it's safe to say that Wilson's short will be very important for the lore of don't starve.
finally someone actually commented on wilson not being on the second chessboard
@FluffyBucketSnake You make a good point with Walter, but iirc the DLC characters aren't canon to the lore (unless they changed that with Wanda)
@FluffyBucketSnake Yes sorry
@@confusedbees I think they're "canon", but Charlie doesn't view them as worth keeping track of in her master scheme because they're creatures native to the Constant helping out the survivors, rather than people dragged into it. That still doesn't explain Wanda or Webber's absence, though.
Technically webber isnt native himself, just the spider he was attacked by
The fact that Maxwell apparently didn't learn anything from his time as a survivor and so easily made a deal which turned him into a pawn is... So tragic. Amazing animation, as always.
and the fact after all the people he made deals with just to screw them over just to agree to a deal with Charlie
Maxwell's at least a bishop.

Interesting move, making Maxwell an antagonistic force in the story again. I can't wait to see what Charlie has planned for him!
I’ve been following the game for almost a decade, since I was 13 and seeing all the callbacks made me tear up a little. Fantastic animation and I’m so excited to see the story moved forward. I main Maxwell and I’m joyous to see him in a fraction of his past glory

The lore is good and all but the most important part of this is that the clockwork rook finally gets to be in a short
Klei's animations are top tier, as usual.

I wonder if the absence of Wilson on the chessboard indicates something, despite the fact that there are few characters missing, maybe they all will be placed on it after their reworks. The short was so marvelous that I've lost my words thinking about all of it. I can feel Maxwells rage, imagine ruling over a world and then becoming trapped in it, I would be triggered too
To be fair, Maxwell was always trapped and never really had any real power. The Constant was more of just his personal project to keep him occupied while the shadows did what they needed from him. Now he’s stuck surviving in that weird place where he is basically a former god, which was nothing more than a canvas for his weird projects to keep him occupied while he lured others to take his place.
@@noncreativeguy7284nah former King not god
And then there’s wes, whos not only on a black square, but on the ninth row, however a chess board should only have eight
Well the monsters aren’t there because they belong in the constant, Webber is something, I don’t know if Webber was in the constant originally but regardless most monsters do not make the cut that belonged in the constant
@@pixelturtle5041 It might be because he wasn’t originally supposed to end up in the Constant

This is the only series where every new update has been genuinely exciting to watch. Plus I spend the whole time waiting to see if Webber shows up.
Huh, that’s true! Although Webber isn’t on the board despite having gotten a rework, I can’t help but feel you’re onto something.
I would agree with you if Webber weren't missing too, also not being a character original from the constant and not being an original from DST
This is true! The characters after the Turn of Tides were on the board too.. so when characters get a rework they’ll be added.
@@marxtrash well my persoanl theory on webbers absense is due to the fact he is both a human of our world with a soul and all AND a monster of the constant
@@devi5383 heres a theory is he reason why wilson is not on the board
He has had the worst out of all of the survivors in dst got stuck in all the realms ship wreck, ds, dst, hamlet, and even beat maxwell. The reason why he is not on there is because all of those pieces are pawns.
Wilson is an actual formidable foe to charlie.
Wow, we can only imagine what Klei has in mind for this. I think we know they won’t disappoint though.
i dont know what to even say!! this short genuinely made me proud of being a fan of this game series for almost a decade.
The fact that Maxwell is teller than everyone in the end than the beginning is amazing
I love how in the chessboard while everyone was struggling and scared warly is just there cooking

I love how DST doesn't look like it would have a big story to it but then you see these animations and go like HOW FAR DOES THIS GO??? And you wonder how far they'll go I'm excited to see his rework on console
Ive noticed that everxy characters that are missing from the chessboard are all the ones that didnt originate from the constant, with the exception of Wilson and Wanda.
So every character missing is Wilson, Wanda, Webber, Wortox, Wormwood and Wurt.

So many emotions, but throughout it all Maxwell just seems to tired and sad. I am SO excited to see where this will lead! Thank you as always Klei, you knock it out of the park every single time!!
I wonder If Maxwell considers the others to be friends and not betray them. He can probably help them by acting as a double agent.
Well, he's worked with Wilson on several occasions and spent the most time around him.
Damn bro Kamoshida plays DST...
On a serious note I doubt Maxwell would forget that he still owes Wilson for freeing him.
@@antynomity well, his as much of a victim as everyone here. The one thing he cares the most is Charlie (probably) so if that means colab with other. He probably do it. He's opportunistic after all, but everyone have their goals
Unable, charlie is litteraly the one who orchestrates everything, she knows every single move and thought within the constant.
I think it’s gonna be a story arc
We know that Maxwell’s wants is to seem bigger and more important to be the people around
-obvious from his dapper and demeanor
His needs is probably to be accepted by the people around him
I imagine he is either about to betray them then reels back cause the power of love
I *really* wasn't expecting to be genuinely frightened by 1:45. Klei really does know their horror.
Okay, current observations:
Charlie offers Maxwell extra powers (I'm not sure.)
The chess pieces are black and white, the characters are white meanwhile the monsters are black.
I guess Maxwell is going to betray Charlie
I don’t think Wilson was observing the rose, but the change in maxwells height
Y’all notice that Wilson wasn’t on the chess board?
Whatever happened between the fuel weaver and Charlie, you can clearly see via the death animation of fuel weaver that Charlie doesn’t exactly like him
At 2:49 you can see a brief glimpse of the anger Charlie has towards Maxwell for everything that happened.
In fact, she herself is to blame. She herself climbed into his secret room, while Max protected her from the shadows to the end.
@@zmei_sssssss She was worried for her friend, she had no idea thar he's practicing magic of the malevolant sort. She's a victim here, a woman who's life has been taken away from her and had done nothing but be kind and caring for Maxwell

Do you think if Maxwell had told her the truth, things would have been different? In any case, she would like to protect him from danger, and perhaps it could have been even worse.
I felt bad for Maxwell, seeing himself in the statue, he was just so clearly tired
Then the flashbacks and Maxwell's friendship dynamic was so sweet, but seeing how it went downhill from there broke my heart
I WENT ALMOST SPEECHLESS WHEN I SAW HOW CHARLIE GAVE HIM A NEW ROSE
Seeing the other survivors concerned for Maxwell and then smiling a little at him relieved when he woke up made me happy not going to lie
The fact that the only one who seemed to notice the rose was Wilson, oh no there is going to be more chaos
Also notice how when Charlie puts Maxwell but now as a Black Piece (which made me go "D:") between all the White Pieces who are the survivors, there seems to be everyone there just like before, but I couldn't help but notice that Wilson isn't anywhere in the chessboard (edit:unlike in the scene before I mean), is Charlie planning something for Wilson? I am worried for our favorite scientist
As always Klei this is another absolutely brilliant and masterfully done animation! The LORE T H I C K E N S AND I ALWAYS WILL BE HERE FOR IT
Thank you for your generosity and hard work!

@@Just_a_Dude80 of course
But the ones that do appear here are in the first scene pieces, where it shows Maxwell along the other survivors as white pieces, you can see that Wilson is there, but AFTER Charlie gave the new rose to Maxwell and we see again the chess pieces but Maxwell being a Black chess piece now with the rest of other survivors who are White chess pieces, everyone but Wilson, who is nowhere to be seen. That could mean that Charlie is planning something with Wilson or something is going to happen to him.
A Wilson refresh/rework is long overdue, I am guessing there are some hints for one.
