I think it went forwards in exactly the way it would have for a person like Hux. He even clearly states he is not doing it to help the Resistance, he was doing it to ruin Kylo. From the first time we saw them it was clear that Hux saw Kylo as his rival. Fast forward and we see the evolution of exactly that. He helped his enemies so he could achieve his goal of taking down Kylo. It is definitely an example of not being loyal to the cause, but Hux has never been loyal to their cause. He cares only about being in control, and he was willing to help the Resistance in order to get that. Helping the Resistance was the only way he could think of to get what he wanted, control of the First Order. He didn't want the First Order to fall, he wanted Kylo to fall.
