I remember being very confused about the 'arrow in the knee' meme, because my first Skyrim play through was as an Argonian and the guards were too busy abusing me and calling me a lizard to regale me with their rich backstories.

In addition to Sanic in Forces, there's also the "& Knuckles" meme being an unlockable thing in Mania, which makes Knuckles following you as your sidekick, regardless on who you're playing as (that includes playing as Knuckles).

Luigi's death stare has been wholly embraced in various forms such as the Steely Stare move in Mario + Rabbids. A part of being Sniper Luigi after all.

Every time Nintendo advertises Mario Kart 8, they never stopped showing off Death Stare Luigi, evident with him being in the exact same kart the original video showed him in.

Sonic embracing Sanic is just a great way to acknowledge the silliness of one side of Sonic's fandom. Hell it even shows up in the Sonic the Hedgehog film as a drawing by 'Crazy' Carl as to what he thinks Sonic looks like.
I can’t help but feel like the Sonic mannequin from Sonic 2 was a reference to Sanic as well

@@sinteleon fun fact; apparently it was originally going to be boom!sonic, (the grapple thing is a big giveaway, and the fact that classic sonic is referred to as from another dimension instead of the past) but because of how poorly rise of lyric performed, it was scrapped and replaced it with the OC thing.

There's some NPC dialogue in Borderlands 2 that goes...

I laughed so much the first time I heard it.
I did a double take the first time I heard a Constructor type mech say "A-CHARGIN' MAH LAZER".
I'm not sure if it really counts, but in Crash 4, they referenced the low poly "woah" Bandicott that was a minor reaction meme towards the end of the game when Crash was going towards a time vortex.

I would say that counts cus the "whoa" meme was a thing for some and it was a reward for getting all the fruits/boxes in a certain level
@@MatthewCSnow It was rewarded for getting all the bumpa berries during a grind section before fighting the 2 N. Tropies. There were no boxes.
Also CTR, which during its online updates had the fanbase joking about how the developers were adding literally every Crash Bandicoot character ever, and eventually making a mock up of adding an Iron Checkpoint Crate (normally a generic in level item), as a playable racer, which was then subsequently added as a playable racer in the last update to the game.
When Pokemon OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire came out (remakes of Ruby/Sapphire), there was an infamously memed review that gave the games 7.8 (a lower score then the originals) a key complaint being "too much water", despite there being no difference in the amount of liquid between them. 3 years later in Pokemon Sun/Moon, you got access to a camera mode that made funny comments when you took pictures. One such comment is "7.8/10 too much water". Pretty easy to guess what the developers were poking fun at there.
Yeah, but to be fair, gen 3 had too much water. I hate tentacool more than Zubat. At least Zubat can only confuse, not poison, constrict AND confuse
I found that the funniest considering the region is sea based for a reason. Admittedly the sea area was a good way to slow the pace down for story stuff than just throw you into it like the games after did.

Think it may have been a Slopes Gameroom video but the reviewer was referring not to actual water but water type Pokemon being the most prevalent in the game. People just saw that snippet and thought they were complaining about something mundane.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley the point still stands though. There are the same amount of water type pokemon in Ruby/Sapphire as OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire.

Given its lifespan it's no surprise, but Pokémon has a fair few of these. One of my favourites is in Pokémon Sun and Moon and their "Ultra" versions. When you take a picture in one of the photo locations near water, you'll sometimes get the comment "7.8 out of 10, too much water". This is a reference to a 2014 review for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (the previous games in the series) which rated the games 7.8 out of 10 and cited the region having too many water routes as a con, which became a meme among Pokémon fans basically overnight.
Another, albeit less self-referential one is in Pokémon X and Y where a specific Psychic trainer will state after you beat him that your power must be "Over 9000!" referencing the iconic Dragon Ball Z quote meme.
Yeah they've been doing stuff like that since gen 1 such as the hiker who tells you to "hit me with your best shot" and then says "fired away" after you beat him.
Or the Hiker in BW2 who says "My body is ready!"

My favorite one of these is the Doot Skeleton cosmetic in Doom Eternal. Maybe I'm just immature, but that dumb skeleton going doot always makes me laugh.

Also is that the guards are actually using an oblique way to tell you they're married.

The best part of that book is the Paracelsus stuff, though, yes, the rest of it is indeed masterful.

I remember the first Tomb Raider re-boot game has an achievement called "Former Adventurer", that you got for performing a certain number of dodge counters. During which Lara would ram the opponent an arrow through their knee.

When Andy mentioned Big Chungus in the beginning, I was so sure the list was going to mention how Warner Bros actually put the Big Chungus Bugs design in an official licensed Looney Tunes video game for no reason other than to make a bunch of tongue-in-cheek references to the meme.
Having Jane be the one to talk about the arrow to the knee stuff was a glorious reminder of her actually taking an arrow to the knee in one of oxbox's challenge videos 🤣

You really should have mentioned the tf2 spycrab, it was a glitch, but due to it’s high presence in the tf2 community because of how funny it looked, it was later the added as an official emote for the spy.

In further reference to the meme, if you inspect D.Va's R.I.P. victory pose in the hero gallery and spin it around there's a handful of loose Doritos hidden behind the gravestone.

The commisar shouting "drive me closer, I wish to hit them with my sword" when he gets in a transport. It was based of a meme picture of a 40k commisar riding a tank, waving his sword, and saying something nearly identical.

I don't think it was ever a meme but in Dishonored there is a guard in the Knife of Dunwall DLC that congratulates another guard for getting their own squad.(If you listen to the guards talking one will often ask if they think the other will get their own squad after what happened last night.)
Or if you pick up a cigar in Prey (A different Arkane game)the description will say it smells like whiskey (another reference to something the guards say in Dishonored)

It's a small one, but for most of the time Apex has been around, the Mozambique was a trash tier weapon. It was often a funny little joke to ping one for your teammates as if it were something of value. A year ago or so, they added a limited time gun charm with a picture of the gun that says "Mozambique here!"

"Arrow in the knee" has become so much a part of mainstream culture that it's even referenced in an episode of NCIS, an American police procedural, where when asked if he was into "dorky video games" like "Skyrim and Old Republic" the character Agent McGee says "Until I took an arrow to the knee."
Guacamelee 2 had a seceet area referencing all the ragecomics memes that were in the first game (and all the commenters who said they hated it)
Pretty much a "and I'll fucking do it again" moment that ridicules those that took the "dated" memes too seriously
There’s also Pokèmon Sun and Moon where if you take a picture with the Pokéfinder which has water in it, there’s a chance for one of the comments to be “7.8/10, Too much water”, referencing IGN’s review on Pokémon ORAS

What about 7 games that “foreshadows greatness” or something? To give an example of what i mean, before Housemaque cleaned up the awards with Returnal, they made the fantastic indie twin-stick shooter Nex Machina. Before making Spiritfarer, Thunder Lotus made the gorgeously hand drawn JØTUN. Etc.

Maybe it's not a "meme" per se, but a reference to "Things to do in: Hitman- Puddle Pile" (made by Gavin from Achievement Hunter) made it into Hitman 2 as a conversation subject of -your victims- NPCs :)
Yeah, same as BigMooney06 and his "kill everyone challenge" videos got him referenced in Miami if you kill everyone on the map (a Scottish voiceover plays about everyone being dead), Isle of Sgail (knights show up when you kill everyone else) and a reference in a conversation in Colorado to "a Scottish psychopath who goes around killing everyone".
Also didn’t the developers add a drink recipe to the game specifically for Andy after he mentioned what he didn’t like
In the Civilization games because of a glitch Mahatma Gandhi was the leader most likely to use nukes compared to the leaders of other civilizations which eventually resulted in the Nuclear Gandhi meme which ended up being referenced in the games, In Civilization 5 his use of nukes rating was set to twelve out of ten while Civilization 6 gave him a tendency to draw the nuke loving leader agenda in honor of the Nuclear Gandhi meme.

Turns out it wasn't actually true. Ghandi was no more likely to use nukes than any other character. Most likely it was just more memorable because Ghandi was a pacifist irl

The glitch in question was that leaders had an agression rating and Ghandi's was as low as it could be, however, (iirc) the Democracy govenment type lowered agression for any leader that used it which in the case of Ghandi caused his aggression rating to roll over and become maximum. Basically, once India discovered democracy they became incredibly warlike and would indeed use nukes, if available, at the drop of a hat.

Sanic was also referenced in the first Sonic movie, the old man talking about a 'blue demon' showed the picture around as evidence of him seeing it.
Personal favorite example of this was when the beginning of Deltarune Chapter 2 confirmed that, just like the memes said, the ending of Chapter 1 really was Kris wanting some pie.

It should count if it doesn't. One time playing Minecraft, the yellow angled text that is usually near the title said "Reticulating Splines". I could not stop laughing.
Goat Simulator is literally a meme made of memes. The whole game you're hearing all sorts of references to other games, memes, and is absolutely chock-full of fourth wall breaks and tongue in cheek references (TURDIS is a portapotty made to resemble Dr. Who's TARDIS).
Nothing makes you feel as old as having memes explained to you. Great video though!
In halo infinite there was a meme about how in the pre gameplay video on RUclips this one brute (people named craig) was near the player and the image when viral and people were making TONS of memes on it and to pay respect to the meme when you get the IWHBYD skull on top of the tower (4th mission) you can find a cd album that shows his face and one of the songs says "the day I became a meme". Also, the comms towers sometimes have the grunt talk about the brute and being jealous of his fame.
Funny thing about Sanic, he also appeared as a drawing in the first live-action Sonic movie- drawn by I believe a conspiracy-theory hobo who saw him but nobody believed him.

The characters Clem and John Prodman from Warframe both started as memes. Clem was originally in a small series of fan made comics and was named after a line that Grineer soldiers say pretty often; “Ket Klem” (which translates to “get them”). John Prodman was created when a player saw a regular Prod Crewman (weak Corpus melee grunt, basically) have a scuffle with the infested boss Phorid and survive.
And then there's that one guy in Windfell who one-ups the various guards who stopped their adventuring days via arrow-related knee injury by declaring "I used to be the greatest soldier in the Stormcloak army, until I took a sword to the chest."

I'm happy you mentioned that the arrow in the knee slang is false. I always saw it as smelling too much of a Tumblr fake post to be even remotely true.
There's one meme that should have been included imo. The "spycrab" was an animation bug in Team Fortress 2 where you went spy, held out your disguise kit and looked out as you crouched. It was named the spycrab and got its own taunt animation, cosmetic and a plush made by valve to get said cosmetic. It's been a long running joke since 2008!
If I were a game dev, one of memes I’d put in the game is an npc that screams “LEEEROOOOYYYYY JEENNNNNKIIIINNNSS” and you get an achievement if you type in chat “Oh my god he just ran in.”
I don't know if it fits, but if "you can play Doom on anything" is a meme, then Doom Eternal should make the list too.
The Iron Checkpoint Crate from CTR Nitro Fueled can also fit here, being a reference to a joking Reddit post about the crate's inclusion in the game.

In Elden ring you start off fighting MarGIT, at this point you need to 'Git good'.
