Great explanation. For people just getting into this. Keep in mind that the most important tips and equipment here are the size and shape of the light modifiers, grip equipment, and how the bounce is used. The lights used here are much more powerful than necessary to achieve this look. A couple of 120d's for the Key and Hair lights and some Aputure MC's for the cop car effect would get you the same look with power still to spare.
Great tips!!!! The lights used are good for any situation (big or small, indoor/outdoor). If you are doing big projects it’s more worth it to go big/more expensive than to have the smaller stuff and then also the bigger stuff.

You guys also have a refreshing and healthy view on the role gear/equipment plays in the creative process; I'd love to hear your thoughts (new video perhaps?) on an "Investment Roadmap" for building your equipment closet. A lot of my students get a camera and one lens, then immediately go and buy a gimbal. No ND's, no data storage... just freak'n gimbals. What do you feel is a good path for growing your production capabilities? In what "order" should you be investing in yourself/gear? Also, at what point should the last gear you bought start paying for the next gear you want? "Mowing lawns" pays for your first camera, but at what point does that first camera start paying for your second camera (or lights, mics, etc)? Thanks for the awesome education. I tell everyone not to subscribe to your channel.
Fantastic point!!! We should totally make a video about that! There are lots of things more important than gimbals… making mistakes through experience is usually the only way people really learn unfortunately.

Great question Simon! In addition to yours, I would like to add one more question. At the beginning, I started with basic equipments for clients with low budget and they were happy with my works. As I continue to learn more thing and had access to more fancy gears to produce better works, but I find it hard to raise the price for old clients. Of course, some understand and accept the raise, but I had to cut tie with a lot of good, old clients because "what you did before is good enough for us." Is there any good way to deal with it in the long run?
Loved the video! Turning on each light one by one, seeing what they're doing on the subject/plane, is the exact same technique that my teacher is giving us during lighting courses in film school. And we're on the other side of the world in France... so learning lighting is quite the same across the globe in the end!

In shallow shots where you can't avoid being super close to both the subject and the background it can be super frustrating to get it where your subject is popping (my last office was 8x8 and I filmed in in) I like to try and use as much gridding as possible for the key so it doesn't spill on the background (often only like 2-3 feet or less from the subject) and use different light temperatures in the background and practicals to help create depth and different "zones" that help shape the image. Gotta say when I DONT use a backlight, I wonder if I should have, so good times for all.
Great video! Would love to hear more on your methodology on how you choose to light/shoot. I keep hearing DP’s say, “You should always shoot shadow side.” But I can’t help but notice your choice to go against that (at least on this particular shoot.) I guess my main question would be, how do you decide when to shoot shadow, and when to “break that rule”?

Another great video. I love how you don’t beat around the bush for 20 minutes and then provide people with no useful information. You’re always straight to the point and do a wonderful job teaching your viewers how to accomplish what they are seeing in the video. For best lighting only shoot one camera and adjust lighting for every shot. If it’s multi cam it gets way more complicated: lights will need to be mounted on the ceiling with minimal stands.

I've lit millions of these setups. I paused the video at 9:00. The camera left side of his face is just starting to glow. If you knock down the camera iris less than 1/4 stop he wouldn't glow and the shading on the camera-right side of his face would be more dramatic. Also I'd knock down the back light a wee bit. That's quite a halo he's got on his shoulders. Good idea using a chin card. I' use one all the time.

at 5:42 you state that the hair light is on an "Impact boom pole" while I'm pretty sure both the key and hair lights are on the very majestic Kupo 546M junior boom stand - sorry, I'm just a grip fanatic :-)
@@EpicLightMedia are you sure? Because there’s no way Impact makes a stand of that heft. The impact boom combo is about 2-3 X cheaper and isn’t built like that. If you zoom in on your video it says Kupo on all the lock offs (I’m pretty sure I see that for the one used for the key light, no?) The only other stand that looks like that is the equally excellent Avenger A4050CS junior boom stand. But may be I’m wrong ?
Only wish these RUclipsrs would use actual affordable lighting anyone of us would be able to purchase I think none of us are professional cinematographers we just like to Up our video skills and are looking for the most feasible piece of equipment nevertheless I appreciate the pointers in regards to positioning direction of the lights

I think my first camera already came with a DJI gimbal and a drone… at least that’s what i told my wife.

It’s very tough to kick that backlight addiction.

Junior + combo stands typically. Much stronger than conventional light stands.

Lighting is cool and all. But how did you record the audio? It sounds so clear without any reverb.

Lots of Hollywood DPs now days shy away from overused backlight. In the past it was a staple.. but today it’s not in style. I’m old school.
I think the brick in the back ended playing a little too dark. It kind of wastes the production design.
