The filter-down, or ripple-effect of one DP through the internet is fantastic. You read from the DP of Knives out, then dispersed it through this project and it's breakdown. Now I've got another technique to apply for my own shoots. Amazing. Thank you.
I feel like you're really opening up to the RUclips format and letting your personality and style shine through the edit. I'm a big fan!! Also *taking a lot of notes* -- I'd love to see what lighting fixtures you think are essential to have in a versatile professional kit vs. what's worth only renting.
I'm a gaffer, I think having a nice panel type source for soft light on faces is a great start, next moving on to a hard source like a fresnel, great for a hair light or to light the background. I like the aputure 60x, dedo lights are nice for that, if you want a cheap option a mole or arri 300w. Next fixture for me is a tube led light, the length gives you decently soft shadows / wrap around a face given its size which makes them easy to conceal or you can make them stand out as a practical. Finally I'd buy a small light like an aperture mc or a lume cube, a tiny light that can act as a eye light, stick it inside a practical, something quick to place under a cabinet or inside a car.
I love the insight. I create unboxing videos that doesn't necessarily lend to this type of lighting and set-up, but I find myself trying to incorporate some of the things I learn on this channel anyway. Looking forward to seeing more of your content, Lewis. This is really fantastic.
i love seeing how much access you are giving your youtube audience. Anyone that works these jobs knows that sharing this much production BTS is very rare.
If you could please cover your pre-production process / working with a gaffer as DP that would be amazing. Not often covered and not easily to learn for aspiring DPs.
as someone just breaking into the film industry who is is already working on projects with small - medium crews, i just want to tell you how awesome it is for you to share bts production insights and solutions. it is a huge help for myself and i would think especially people outside the business entirely to have this knowledge from a business that can often seem very "closed" and secretive when it comes to on set production (as well as pre production), especially if you lack the right network. thank you!
You guys: Phone mounted to a cage with a signal going to a teradek powered by a v-lock with a second monitor on the back and a few ipads on set for a live stream. Me: Make everyone stand behind the phone in a circle with my hand covering the screen from the sun.
Lewis this breakdown format is just something else! really great job! The simpleness is so appreciated! I have one question: The information you got from the BTS on Knifes Out, where do you read/whatch those BTS information. Is it a magazine, instagram profile or something else? Best regards Simon K.
Filming on moving things like that SUCKS! I never used to get sea sick until the first time I had to film on a boat. Now, every time I'm on a boat, filming or not, it's a challenge.
Dude, great videos. Can u just add a little text on the sides informing us about the white balance color temp u used for the shots if possible. that would be so helpful
looks great! I have question though - I think you said lights were balanced to 3200k? If that is the case, why? Is it to get the window to look a touch blue? I'm just wondering because without any practical or interior light wouldn't it be easier to just go 5600? I'm not arguing with the result, just curious.
I think you did a great job man. Clever letting the real phone do its thing, and don't over lighting those scenes. Really appreciate you sharing all of this. Looking forward for more!
These are the kinds of videos I really love. Honest. Not trying to sell your channel. Straight forward, simple talk. Well done. That tip about the sheers on the lights to simulate the window in her eye is gold.
Can you please add the filters or flags on lights as well as on camera that you use. It’ll be really helpful for buddying cinematographers like myself.
Hey dude! Love your content, I think you are really doing a service to young DoPs like me. One question I had is, how do you find your exposure on set with digital cinema systems? Do you prefer to use a light meter? Or do you rely on false colour, waveform etc. Thanks!
Such awesome content! I love how you create the looks, super simple concepts just executed really well. “Backlight robot” I’m definitely guilty some times.
First of all, great stuff, man. Cool insight into your work. But, wow. Can you share your export settings for uploading to youtube? Your film grain looks clear and just downright phenomenal. Whenever I upload anything with film grain, it looks like a muddy mess. Please, share your knowledge
Dude, insanely good video. Would love to know your approach to lighting with haze. When do you use it? When don't you? Since it blooms around highlights, would this then change your approach to filtration? (Black Pro-Mist etc)
Enjoying these videos so much man. Thank you for putting this out there for up coming gaffers to learn from. I love seeing these detailed set ups and breakdowns.
Fantastic channel! I would love to see a sort of “starting out kit”. A couple stands, 1-2 lights, a couple modifiers, what kind of movement (a gimbal, a tripod+head) what software to use. Suggestions for spherical lenses with character. What kind of lens setup to start with (24/50/105?) Think an artist or a couple of people just starting out. Playing around. Would be great! Thanks!
Hiring a Leonard Chapman .. To save on HMI’s but I got in a LC to do movements + all these Teradeks … really? Just do it on an Edlekrone Pro system, jib, dolly, slider, Pro kit & guess what … No operator.. All remote single operated - DONE. Komodo overkill… try an FX6 & FX 3 for B Roll. Think you’ll find it all works a dream & now the DJI Ronin 4D with 6 or 8K + internal RAW & ND & 120 fps 4K - a complete system in one CAM. The tools your talking about are just so outdated & pointless to an indie film maker in this day & age when other smaller systems with larger sensors & total UI capability make it easier for a hands on approach. Maybe on a 30 - 60 M Hollywood budget for NetFlix this gear is useful … But for agency, client jobs or your first short. An FX 6 of DJI Ronin 4D with some robust Rotolight panels or Hudson Spider china ball kits…. Your SET!
Solid, solid cinematography insights and so well delivered, thanks for sharing your work! Can you tell us, when using the 300D + spotlight for hard sun light on the couch, what lens did you have on 36° or 19°? thanks!
Man shaping the eye light to look like the window was a gem!
Seriously! Never thought of that before. Super helpful!
🙏 love your work man!
That shaping the refection on in the eye is so dope.
Credit goes to a knives out, like he said.
Oscar shot

Thanks! I think it depends where your at in your filmmaking journey, but these kind of ones in this video are go too's for me these days.
SAM!? Love your music! Was surprised to see your name in the comments here.
Yesss a kit video would be amazing. Maybe 3 budget levels for your average filmmaker.

@@EDDY69 Thanks for the advice!!
Can you do one a day Lewis? These are pure gold...
I love the insight. I create unboxing videos that doesn't necessarily lend to this type of lighting and set-up, but I find myself trying to incorporate some of the things I learn on this channel anyway. Looking forward to seeing more of your content, Lewis. This is really fantastic.
Thanks Jacques!🙂
this is why camera youtube loves you 🙏

If you could please cover your pre-production process / working with a gaffer as DP that would be amazing. Not often covered and not easily to learn for aspiring DPs.

Great stuff. looks like you had fun making this one. :)

Very interesting! Would like to see how are you sculpting a final product from a script. How to do a script breakdown or smth?
These are the kinds of videos I really love. Honest. Not trying to sell your channel. Straight forward, simple talk. Well done.
That tip about the sheers on the lights to simulate the window in her eye is gold.
Goood video! I didn't even care about the 1x1 format hahah . Why did you choose to record you like that tho? Just wondering
Haha love it, 30 crew on set.. "roll camera" actors start filming with iPhone.. Thanks for the content amazing work!
haha very funny!!! awesome!!!
"and not just be a backlighting robot" - those are the words of wisdom
I feel attacked when he said that smh
Thanks for your vids!
The sheers over the litemat catchlight is a brilliant call. Wow.
Nice
Can you please add the filters or flags on lights as well as on camera that you use. It’ll be really helpful for buddying cinematographers like myself.
Loved the video!❤️ 💯 Keep creating content like this.❤️

I don't use them too much, but a little bit of false colour and waveform, just to make sure the blacks and whites are where I want them
very nice video! but why is there no youtube video explaining lighting when you are at a floor higher than the ground floor :')
Such awesome content! I love how you create the looks, super simple concepts just executed really well. “Backlight robot” I’m definitely guilty some times.
Love the breakdowns man, great stuff!
Absolutely amazing and so many great tips!
what dolly is that?
Love the video bro. Utilizing sheers over the light to make it look like a window in the eye. Genius 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
First of all, great stuff, man. Cool insight into your work.
But, wow. Can you share your export settings for uploading to youtube? Your film grain looks clear and just downright phenomenal. Whenever I upload anything with film grain, it looks like a muddy mess. Please, share your knowledge
Bro your videos are AMAZING, you are about to single handedly take my photography to the next level.
Dude, insanely good video. Would love to know your approach to lighting with haze. When do you use it? When don't you? Since it blooms around highlights, would this then change your approach to filtration? (Black Pro-Mist etc)
Love this dude!! That shot on the carnival ride looked soooo nice 😍😍 Sucks you got sick and couldn’t operate!!
Is the Sony A7S III better than Panasonic EVA1? In terms of images rendered and dynamic range? (Sony is full frame and EVA1 is super35).
Enjoying these videos so much man. Thank you for putting this out there for up coming gaffers to learn from. I love seeing these detailed set ups and breakdowns.
Please do a video on documentary lighting & cinematography!
Shout out to that focus puller, focusing with 1 hand, eating a burger with the other! Damn!
subscribed hard.

are u related to Roger Deakins? U talk like him and somewhat looks like him :D But this is very informative and truly amazing.. loved it...

Great inspiring information!!! What was the light in the softbox used by the window as a fill light?
Thanks, Its a Litemat
Solid, solid cinematography insights and so well delivered, thanks for sharing your work! Can you tell us, when using the 300D + spotlight for hard sun light on the couch, what lens did you have on 36° or 19°? thanks!
The dude from Epic Light Media literally told us to check out your channel. It’s really nice too, like his.
very nice video! tnx! but i have some problem with music and your voice.. can you put music to - 20 db?
