  • This is episode #20 of 26 total episodes in production order of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's 1969-1970 sci-fi action series "UFO." This recording was of a bad, slightly edited 16mm film that WVEU TV 69 -Atlanta aired from 1985-1988. This is a VHS recording I made back in 1988. The 1988 commercials were left in. My DVD disc ran out of space, so I'll upload more WVEU content from this VHS tape of mine in the near future. Enjoy!
Set in the not so far-flung future of 1980, the plot of this show is that Earth is being attacked by hostile aliens from a dying world who need transplanted human body parts (organs) to survive, so they capture & murder human beings. The aliens do not speak. A personal tragedy survivor Commander Ed Straker leads a secret organization called S.H.A.D. O. which stands for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization. There is a secret Moonbase which houses Interceptor fighters to blast the UFO's before they can make it to Earth. Some UFO's successfully evade that line of defense, so S.H.A.D.O.'S. other assets are called upon to stop the aliens. There is a Skydiver super nuclear sub which can launch an interceptor fighter from the sea to the sky, laser-firing all- terrain tanks as well as S.I.D. (Space Intruder Detector) which is an automated, man-made talking robotic satellite which detects alien ships in space & alerts Moonbase & S.H.A.D.O. of incoming aliens. The main HQ is hidden beneath a film studio. This show is COOL & at times violent. The music is scored by Barry Gray who later composed original music for year one of "Space: 1999" in 1974.
    NOTES:
Original airdate: Wednesday, December 2nd, 1970 in the United Kingdom. This broadcast in Atlanta, GA in August, 1988 from WVEU TV 69 was via a bad 16mm film print from ITC Entertainment. There is a bit missing between the scene in Ed Straker's S.H.A.D.O. office & the golf course scene in act 1 of this broadcast, which is obvious by the jump splice edit.
Long before she portrayed Dylan McKay's mother in "Beverly Hills, 90210" in the early 1990's, auburn-haired actress Stephanie Beacham was a British bird babe here in 1970 in this episode of "UFO."
Actress Wanda Ventham (Colonel Virginia Lake of S.H.A.D.O. in "UFO") is in reality "Dr. Strange" actor Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch's mother. Benedict Cumberbatch was born on Monday, July 19th, 1976 in London, England.
The special effects were by Derek Meddings who also created the miniatures in big screen James Bond 007 blockbuster films as well as "Superman: The Movie", among many other notable projects
    .
Actor Michael Billington seen here as regular "UFO" character Paul Foster later portrayed the ill-fated boyfriend of "Agent XXX" (played by Beatle wife Barbara Bach) in the 1977 James Bond 007 film "The Spy Who Loved Me."

Notes about this episode from a Gerry Anderson fan website:
Stephanie Beacham (Sarah Bosanquet) reappears as Christie in "The Protectors" episode "Your Witness." The character was originally named ‘Virginia Bosanquet’, but the forename was changed when Colonel Virginia Lake was reintroduced.
Philip Madoc (Captain Steven) previously appeared in the series as Steven Rutland in the "UFO" episode titled "A Question of Priorities." He later appears as Commander Anton Gorski in the "Space:1999" pilot episode "Breakaway."
This episode marks Steven Berkoff’s second appearance in the series as Captain Steve Minto since "The Cat With Ten Lives episode. He appears again in "Reflections In The Water" and "Mindbender." Berkoff later portrays Dr. Paul Jorry in the "Space Precinct" episode "Deadline."
Barry Stokes (Skydiver Engineer) reappears in the "UFO" episode titled "Reflections In The Water" and later portrays Technician Jim Haines in the "Space:1999" episode "Voyager’s Return."
Alan Harris (Skydiver Sonar Operator) previously appeared in the series as a Space Interceptors pilot in the episode "Kill Straker." He later appears as a Main Mission operative throughout the first season of "Space:1999", as a medic in the Space: 1999 episode "Dragon’s Domain", and then as the accused prisoner in the "Space: 1999" episode "Devil’s Planet."
Standard Naval shell cannons have an effective range of almost 12 miles and it’s revealed here that the UFO’s laser cannons have a greater range than this.

There is more on this tape. My DVD ran out of space as I was using the "XP" speed to digitally convert my old 1988 VHS tape.

Prior to 90210, Stephanie Beacham was Sable Colby on Dynasty (and its spin-off The Colbys).

Sylvia Anderson was responsible for the fashions on the show and did the majority of the casting.
