"The Space Giants" story: lost pop culture history is explored! This will be fun for any "Godzilla" movie fan who has never heard of "Ambassador Magma" (1966-1967 in Japanese TV land) which was titled "Monsters From Outer Space" then "The Space Giants" in the U.S.A. In this preview, every giant monster in "The Space Giants" is shown (Ambassador Magma 1966-1967) + music covers from this show. This is a showcase since I am in the process of uploading every episode ever made of this series of 52 half-hour episodes to my channel @thenostalgicpodblast The Nostalgic Podblast

Thank you for uploading this series. I became a fan of Osamu Tezuka after reading the original Japanese Astro Boy comics released by Dark Horse in the early 2000's. Ambassador Magma briefly appeared in an Astro Boy game in 2003 and the game's built in encyclopedia lead me to learn about this show and many of Tezuka other creations over the years.

Good question. The answer is that in this pilot there were several differences in the unaired version that survived the aired cut. In Fact, Ambassador "Goldar" Magma had a humanoid face! In a few weeks I will post the unaired pilot for you to see.

I don't think Ambassador Magma ever made that big an impression in the US. I've NEVER seen a rebroadcast of this series since the dub debut and I'm only a few years (born) after the fact! I've seen most of the better-known Japanese imports into the US/1960s -- the original Ultraman, Astro Boy, Speed Racer (of course!), 8 Man, and even Johnny Socko! Of these series, right now, I would say Ultraman is enjoying a BIG revival since Tsuburaya licensed most of the Ultra franchise to Mill Creek and Shout Studios. The fact it's being rerun constantly on streaming has made Ultraman MUCH bigger now. I've bought all of the steelbook Ultraman releases through Ultraman Leo. By far, my two favorites are the original Ultraman and Ultraseven now but I appreciate aspect of the later series and have watched later Ultraman such as Ultraman Zero. Still prefer the Showa era Ultraman to the later eras. Ultra Q (1966), btw, is very overlooked and I encourage people to watch it. It's a kaiju/monster of the week series but MUCH better than that sounds! It's intelligently written, directed, and produced well for its low budget. Think of it as a Japanese predecessor to both Kolchak the Night Stalker and The X-Files but still possessing its own identity. The revival series, Neo Ultra Q, is also well worth seeing, too. They HAD licensed Ultra Q for the US and actually dubbed THE ENTIRE SERIES into English but it was stupidly dropped at the last minute because A) they didn't think it being B&W would play well in the States and they wanted to promote the COLOR series Ultraman instead!, and B) the transition to TV color transmission was ongoing and accelerated after 1966 thanks to a slew of TV series designed to promote color TV ( => Batman, the original Star Trek, original Ultraman, etc.). The NBC television network went full-color broadcast in fall 1966 rapidly followed by CBS and ABC in this transition as well. Ironically, it still wouldn't be until past 1970 that most people would own a color TV set so generally those full-color series were enjoyed in B&W by the majority of TV viewers until the 1970s! Ultra Q has since been remastered and colorized (Japanese-release only; the licensed US version is still only in original B&W) and at least some of the English-dubbed version exists. I think they've found 3-4 episodes with the English dubs intact. Johnny Socko and Ambassador Magma were revived as reimagined anime OVA series in the 1990s; they were licensed by American companies (Manga Entertainment in both cases, I believe). Johnny Socko was rebranded under its original name and the 1990s anime version, Giant Robo, is far better known now. I have NEVER seen the 1990s Ambassador Magma anime but I'm aware of it having seen the laserdisc and DVD releases in stores (but having never bought them myself). General consensus I've read is that Giant Robo was received better...

Thanks for your detailed comment & opinion! The reason that the show is scarce is because the English tracks are "lost." "The Space Giants" is a lost classic of Gen X. In Japan, there was a Blu Ray release.

@@thenostalgicpodblast I'm very familiar with Osamu Tezuka and have watched other anime he produced besides Astro Boy/Mighty Atom. Sadly, Astro Boy is well past his prime and the early 2000s anime TV series revival didn't do well. It bombed nearly as big as the CG feature film a few years later! Astro Boy is much like Mickey Mouse -- people recognize the face but they don't appreciate the context and historical significance of the character anymore. He's essentially a corporate mascot now. This is true for Japan as well as internationally. [Ironically, Kimba the White Lion might be Tezuka's best known creation internationally now thanks to Disney plagiarizing this IP for The Lion King feature films. Kimba the anime might not get replayed much anymore but people recognize the concept in The Lion King.] I saw Ambassador Magma on VHS and laserdisc in stores (Suncoast Motion Picture Company, Media Play, anime conventions) but it was never talked about a lot in fan circles in the 1990s... Currently, no one's licensed this title and it isn't streaming on any network in the United States. It's in rights-limbo until someone gets interested enough to pick this anime up again. I thought Ambassador Magma might have been released on DVD since Manga Entertainment (which snatched up the rights to Magma after buying out LA Hero, previous rights holder) tended to re-release its older licensed anime titles on DVD. I'm not finding any pictures or listing for a domestic US release of Ambassador Magma (1993 anime) on DVD ANYWHERE. Frankly, I don't think I ever saw an American DVD release in-stores or online for this title, period. The Ambassador Magma anime was released on DVD in Japan but that release doesn't have English subtitles OR the English dub track created for the US release...
