Yay! This is one of two episodes that I was in the studio audience for. I was 15 (man, that makes me feel old), and a friend's dad was a cameraman at the BBC Oxford Road studios in Manchester where it was filmed and got us tickets. The Oxford Road studios closed in 2011 and were demolished in 2012 when new facilities a couple of miles away in Salford Quays opened.
@@DeanStrickson The other one was Queeg, which was great fun. I'll try to remember to pop back and mention a couple of things about the filming after the gals have watched it. No spoilers!
That's so cool! Pretty sure I wasn't born yet when these came out but my dad had seasons 1, 2 3 and 5 on DVD and would watch it all the time so I have some kind of childhood memories with these seasons too 😂
You sometimes feel sorry for Rimmer for a minute or two, right up until he says or does something totally Rimmer, then you're right back to thinking, what a Smeg Head. Happy Dwarfin Gals.
The secret of Red Dwarf's success was taking high-concept sci-fi ideas about life, death, identity, freedom, love, war, time, space and the nature of reality, and dumping them onto two guys you'd expect to find staggering out of a student bar at 2 in the morning.
Segway… If I heard correctly, as it was only a snippet, the song Rimmer was listening to was “I could be happy“… This is by a band called altered images. The lead singer of this band is Clare, Grogan, Claire, Grogan, plays Kaczynski in the show, Listers true love
Series two is a 'classic' RD season. Yes things do shift into a different gear with three, and it becomes more of the show it's known for, and is excellent, but quite a few of us are very nostalgic for the first two series as it's a slightly different beast.
The first Red Dwarf episode I ever saw, taped off the TV by my mum or sister. My 8 year old brain didnt get half of the jokes or innuendos then but I knew it was funny and a life-long fan was born.
I can confirm that you do indeed have to eat a triple fried egg buttie with chilli sauce and chutney really quick as the bread will, in fact, disintegrate
Cheers for the reaction. Thanks For The Memory is one of my faves of the early Red Dwarf episodes. Yes, it's funny, but also very well plotted. I love it when Rimmer says he believes the injuries are aliens' ways of communicating, with Cat responding: "I'd hate to be around when one of these suckers is making a speech!"
Speaking of Lister being a slob, I just remembered: in the novel, Lister has a full-on breakdown over the death of the crew, and spends about a month or two regressing almost literally to a caveman before Holly finally decides he needs to intervene, and switch Rimmer on. Rimmer's literally keeping him sane. I guess they thought that would be too sad for the show, so they had Rimmer come on instantly.
Worth noting that while the show first aired in 1988, it went into production in 1986. Meanwhile the first book came out in November, 1989. While it is certainly possible that the book represents the original idea, it's far more likely that the script came first and was expanded for the novel. Also, since "Grant Naylor" is a pseudonym for the writing team of Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, it's possible that we're seeing a different writing balance between them. Some writing teams split tasks in unusual ways, like one person handling dialogue while the other handles plot and character arcs; if so, the structural balance would vary between different media.
I do like that nearly everything Lister does is just to annoy Rimmer. That is enough to make him a nearly functioning human being. Every stained shirt, biting his toenails, microwaving his socks, his entire diet, all to annoy Rimmer.
Was hoping to see "I'd trade it all in to be loved, and to have been loved..." 😢 Even though it didn't take well it was a heartfelt gesture to let someone he hates so much share something that special to him. Suggesting to us the idea that if Lister could go back in time and step aside for Rimmer to be with her instead he would have done it.
This for me is the episode which defines Rimmer as a character just having someone once truly love him completely changed his personality he relaxed stopped being such a smeg head and actually started to enjoy his life then had it snatched away making things even worse than before.
The behind-the-scenes story is that the actor who portrayed Kryton was busy when the rest of S2 was filmed. The in-show explanation is that when Kryton took Lister's space bike he crashed into an asteroid and was badly damaged, taking until S3 (when Robert Llewellyn takes over the role) to be rebuilt.
I keep meaning to but I don't like the sauce or chutney so even if I did I'd be missing the full effect 🤣. Still want to challenge doing 3 fried eggs in 1 butty though 😋🤣
I hate eggs but I've been watching red dwarf since I was a kid and when I grew up it inspired me to create my own culinary recipes while extremely drunk. I've come up with one or two successes 😅
In Futurama, the Planet Express building has a very similar roof pod to Red Dwarf's Observation Dome, called The Angry Dome. The Professor tends to wander up there whenever he needs a rant to work out his problems. Just a coincidence, I'm sure.
Amazing Reaction. I waited to check out your RD content until you were all the way through season 2, but you gals are great reactors to this content, thank you so much for making these!
Regarding Kryten, just think of it as he is on the Red Dwarf but it's such a big ship that he's still rebelling his way around the various decks out of sight for a while, he does show up again...
From start, the creators (writers?) of the show had set up the rule that there would be no quirky robot character in the crew. It was a horrible cliché in their eyes. That's why there is no Kryten. Until the audience wore them down to take him back... But he will be brilliantly recast, so hold on.
There are some links to Doctor Who. Some of the people who worked on Doctor Who worked on this in the props department etc. I honestly think had Doctor Who continued the effects would have been similar to what was used on Red Dwarf
I think you missed the closing text of the Kryten episode. He borrowed Lister’s bike, and crashed into an asteroid. To go with the whole James Dean thing he was doing at the end there. *spoiler alert* He will be repaired and appear with a new actor in series three. Then he’ll be part of the main cast.
It's interesting what you said about it exploring some really heavy sci-fi ideas despite being "just" a comedy show. The thing is, being a comedy show, they could get away with exploring much wilder ideas episode after episode than a serious sci-fi show ever could. A serious show would have to care much more about realism and keeping the universe internally consistent, but as a comedy show Red Dwarf could follow every wild idea they had without anybody batting an eye. It's a pity that sci-fi and comedy isn't paired more often, as it really does make for some interesting storylines.
Regarding Kryten, there's a scene missing from the version you watched. In the extended version of the episode, they show that the bike he borrowed from Lister can actually work in space, and you see him leaving Red Dwarf. He wasn't intended to be a recurring character at that point. He'll turn up again, eventually (I don't want to spoil anything by being more specific).
Kryten in series 2 was fully intended to be a one off, emphasis of intended. it was a compromise between the creators and co-writers, Doug Naylor wanted to add a robot while Rob Grant didn't, so the middle ground was to have him for one episode only, but after series 2 Rob conceded
When Cat laughs about Rimmer only having sex once... buuuut, when Cat was a baby except for the old priest, and his own parents, the rest of the species had left Red Dwarf on their great exodus. So yeah, Rimmer has only done it once, but at this point in his life, Cat is still a virgin.
This is the big one for me; the first episode I saw. I remember it well; Dad was working away from home, and he happened to find it while channel hopping, and immediately rang Mum and said that I was gonna love this, get me to watch it. It's a lovely episode, too, nice SF concepts and a great central conceit. And a little bit of timey-wimey never does any harm!
Lister is a good guy, and will generally try to do the right thing, but he's only human, and he's more than a mite stupid, so naturally, he doesn't think about the consequences of his decisions in cases like this. It's part of what makes him relatable despite his absurd situation.
Many seasons on from this one, you finally get the answer to "Why Rimmer?"... I mean, of every member of the ships crew that Holly could have chosen to bring back as company for Lister, why would he bring back the ultimate Smeghead? The answer, when it finally comes, is absolutely brilliant. Red Dwarf is one of the finest written British comedies of all time.
This episode really is beautiful. It's not often that Rimmer has something nice happen to him... but this story does show a very genuine moment of selflessness from Lister. And I absolutely also thought of the ST:TNG story when I first saw this, too - although I'm pretty sure this pre-dates the TNG story :)
I'd say this is easily the most inspired and greatest episode of the series, which is why I'm amazed when people say it only picks up from S3 onwards. It does, incidentally, pre-date the TNG episode.
Me too. It's incredible... and barely edible with the sandwich! That it manages to have a good mystery science fiction mystery plot with a genuinely funny and totally satisfying solution despite also spending time with a down time character based drinking bit and includes a load of character development, lots of great jokes and a cult recipe, without ever feeling forced, in 30 minutes is mind boggling! Great performances too.
I wouldn't say it _only_ picks up from S3 onwards, there is certainly a lot of good stuff in S1-2, but S3 undeniably represents a shift in identity and style (not to mention budget) of the show, which lasted until S7 when it shifted again. For me (and many others I gather) S3-6 are the pinnacle of the show's brilliance because of that specific identity and style.
@@Wishbone1977 ISTR reading Grant-Naylor saying that the budget wasn't increased/increased by much from S3, it's just that when they had more control, they were able to use what budget they had more effectively. I wouldn't swear to that, though, I could be misremembering. I do think it lost things from S3 onwards... the bleakness, the core concept that you're alone in a potentially Godless universe... three episodes in and we get Gelfs.
I love everybody in these comments explaining to them what’s up with Kryten’s absence, even though everyone explained it last episode and they’ll probably ask again next episode because they recorded them before even posting the first episode and so haven’t had a chance to read any of the comments.
This is what makes Red Dwarf so great. It's not just all weird sci-fi humour, but it manages to actually work in some compelling ideas and heartfelt moments side by side with it. Shame that so many people sleep on it given it's old and the budget was low.
i think the writers own rule of never falling into the "monster of the week" trope that plagued other sci-fi series really forced them to be more creative, especially with such a limited cast. the stories tended to be more focused inward of the characters rather then focusing on the external world that gives red dwarf its own style.
I love this episode. One of my favourites, along with Stasis Leak (which I will not spoil for you, but I think youll get a real kick out of of it comsidering previous comments). I like that this episode (the one covered here, not Stasis Leak) is a cool little detective mystery story along with the Sci-fi shenanigans. And yes Rimmer is quite a complex character, not just the arrogant smeg head he is often portrayed as. Another thing: for the last episode of this series.... don't skip forward over the start credits or you'll miss a great gag!
It's going back to season one, but if you look up "future tense split screen" you can see the scenes with Lister talking to past and future Rimmer and see how closely they match up. Also looking forward to you both seeing the opening of season 2 episode 6!
The opening to Red Dwarf III will explain a lot, but you may wish to get ready with the pause button, or set playback to about 1/4 speed as it goes quite fast.
Are you tempted to try the triple fried egg, chilli sauce and chutney sandwich, ladies? A cooking try episode would be good content. Just remember to keep the yolks runny.
Knew you would love this episode! It was so well done and does set up the characters more. Kat got me laughing hard when she called Rimmer a "Sad, miserable sack of shit" because it's so true 🤣
If you want to see where Kryten is, look for the Kryten Remastered episode. There is an additional bit at the end. It is not a spoiler. I only have just seen it for the first time as my DVD's do not have the remasters.
People are writing spoilers for you about upcoming series because of your misunderstanding of Kryton. But spoiler free when they wrote it Kryton was a one shot character and after fan response to him and the fact that they liked the character they made him a regular in series 3 14:33
The whole Kristen thing is that when he took Listers space bike he went off into space on his own. He was only ever intended to be a one-off character. He comes back in series 3.
Leaving a "Don't go looking for what we erased" note is always a bad idea. Since none of them would remember what happened, and all information about the past four days - including Lister's diary - would've been destroyed, it would make them wonder what could've been so terrible that it was necessary to erase any and all record of it. _Star Trek_ has dealt with this insatiable curiosity on numerous occasions.
"There's so much care there..." LOL yeah... so just wait for later episodes in later series....It's like being on the most HILARIOUS rollercoaster imaginable ! I mean some of the lines the rest of the crew use to put down Rimmer are BRUTAL, EPIC, but GENUINE ! A great series... well... show... whatever... for sure !
Turning up the audio too high means the RUclips copyright bots detect the video and automatically take it down. Efforts were made to put in subtitles to try to help make up for it.

I think of Red Dwarf as being kinda like the Odyssey in space. It's so true though, season 3 onward is just so good
There's so many great episodes to come. I'm jealous you get to see them for the first time. Enjoy!
This is the first episode of RD that I ever watched. I was 8 at the time and immediately loved it.
Maybe they filmed the Kryton episode last but when they released it they did it first.
But fear not he does start in series 3 for good.
Kat, your ":you sad, miserable sack of shit" remark....priceless. Thank you. :)
To be fair, Kryten did leave the ship on Lister's space bike at the end of his episode...
Did you guys know the BBC did a Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy series in the eighties? You should do that one next.
Howard Goodall who wrote the theme tune hid a surprise in there. See if you can find it (It wasn't noticed for nearly 30 years!)
The Writers changed after season 2 and the show will change in much better ways (at least in my opinion)
You didn't watch them out of order...everything will be explained.
A great series... well... show... whatever... for sure !
good reaction guys!
Kryten was originally meant as a one-off character.
he was, but he comes in for season 3 onwards, one of the best characters

To listen to the original video at a normal volume I have to turn the sound up so much as to have you two screeching at the top of your lungs...
Turning up the audio too high means the RUclips copyright bots detect the video and automatically take it down. Efforts were made to put in subtitles to try to help make up for it.
