      The joke of course is that Esperanto was designed to encompass many of the traits and similarities of the Latin-based languages without the annoying nuances as a means of bringing many people together in a wide-spread communication method, and thus it is supposedly one of the easiest languages to learn.

    Sorry if someone's already said this. The reason for the more clearer look of Holly is, in Series 1, Holly had only a voice to interact with the crew. His face wasn't meant to appear on the set screens and monitors. But the actor insisted it did.
    But they were halfway through filming. So for the scenes where his head doesn''t appear, they shot all new footage of just it in low res to make it appear simulated and inserted them in.
    After that they decided to stick with this way of him interacting with the crew.

    Right away you can see there's been quite a jump up in quality compared to season 1. There's a clear sense that the budget has gone up, the actors have gotten a lot more comfortable with their roles, and the tone's shifted towards a more wacky and irreverent tone and resulted in a much funnier show. This one episode alone is just packed with great jokes - Lister's art college tenure, the start of Rimmer's alien obsession, dog's milk, "less meat on them than a Chicken McNugget", and of course Kryten's act of rebellion at the end. Everyone highlights season 3 as the beginning of the show's golden age, but I think season 2 is a really strong one too, and I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest of it.
    By the way, don't get too concerned over whether to say "season" or "series", we use those words quite interchangeably here in the UK. The only show where we get pedantic over it is Doctor Who, and even then it's only to differentiate the classic show (which uses "seasons") from the new one ("series")

    • @bletheringfool
      @bletheringfool 11 месяцев назад +1

      The point is not what term the general public use but what broadcaster's use. The industry standard if you like. And UK shows use Series. Except of course Doctor Who. The reason classic Who did that was because the number of episodes in each 'series' was much higher than the usual shows for the era.

    • @DerekHartley
      @DerekHartley 11 месяцев назад +1

  • @AnubisX1
    @AnubisX1 11 месяцев назад +5

    After this you maybe wondering where Kryten is. Official reason is that this episode was broadcast out of order. This episode was meant to be the last in series 2 but BBC 2 broadcast it first. So in the remastered DVD release, there was a extra scene added with Kryten jetting off in to space on listers space bike. The Red Dwarf novel infinite welcomes careful drivers and sequel book Better than life. Which covers the first 3 series and its a really good read or listen, goes into a lot more detail about this.

    Irony of 'Androids' being made by robots giving WGA strike over AI scripts.
    Gareth Gwenlan, producer of 'Only Fools and Horses', turned down the opportunity to make Dwarf. The writers saw him as playing safe.
    Norman was always against the black screen but they removed the filter.
    Kryten - named after 'The Admirable Crichton'. Lowest rank has the most skills.
    Director's wife (American comedienne Ruby Wax) commented to the writers " and you said you couldn't write for women."
    The make up is an interesting view on uncanny valley - looks human but is obviously a machine.

    I love watching newbies' reactions to Red Dwarf, another youtuber did a series a few years ago and I was totally there for it. Really enjoying yours so far, I hope you do all 12 seasons/series. Enjoy series 2, there's lots of good episodes here, just don't get too used to Kryten... yet.
    You mentioned about the sets getting a bit of 'glow up', the creators hated how grey and drab the sets looked in series 1 so they tried to brighten it up a bit for series 2, you'll notice things like the bolts on the walls being painted blue, and the decorations in the bunk room like the inflatable banana and the American licence plates just to add some colour and break up the grey. The remodeled 'control room' I think was explained by calling it the 'science room' or something like that, as opposed to the 'drive room' which was the control room in series 1. All in all series 2 is a strong improvement over series 1, but things really get going next season... I mean series.

    Look Holly decimalizing the octave system was just a brilliant concept for a throw-away joke. " Do Re Mi Fa So La Wo Bo Ti Do." But the brilliance is that over three million years a ship AI can go a little peculiar. It was the small little jokes Rob Grant and Doug Naylor put in to demonstrate this rather than just using exposition that makes this show so fantastic. And Norman Lovett's delivery back in those first few series was brilliant ! Just you Galifrey Gals wait !

    The television networks would all release their news shows in the Fall. This was mainly due to the fact that most early television was produced in New York City and a lot of the early talent came from both radio and Broadway. In New York the so-called theater season begins in the fall and so did television production. That's how we started referring to television as having "seasons."

    Ok first of all... Doctor Who, the original, you might say - was referred to as Seasons. I'm sure of that, because nerdy 15yo me had a card catalogue to keep track of which novels I'd collected (hey, there was 150-something of them, I needed help remembering) and I wrote "Season One", etc. And I would have based that on any one of the various Doctor Who information books that I had on my bookshelf. I always thought that "Series" was US speak!?
    Anyways - Kryten is amazing! :) The actor was also the voice of Talkie Toaster. And yes, btw - as soon as I saw the views you got on the first Red Dwarf episode, I was pretty sure you'd keep going! Give your fans what they want! :) And as for people hate-watching you - forgive them. Nothing annoys them more. :)

    I like the idea that every series/season of Red Dwarf is its own similar but parallel reality. It explains away all the continuity (not that that thats an issue unless you want it to be) and gives an in universe reason why the production values change so drastically every series

    They actually had the same money for s2; but they spent a lot in s1 on the Red Dwarf model which they didn't need to in s2. In addition it was partially a conscious choice in S1 to make the set look like a freight ship and therefore not pretty. It failed as painting wood battleship grey looks like wood painted battleship grey not like a metal hull. So in S2 they tried to brighten up existing sets with more vivid colours. Such as the inflatable Banana.

    The cast commentary for this episode (which i watched everytime i did the episode itself growing up) goes into how showing the audience the punchline before the characters made the joke so much more impactful.
    (Mainly commenting to feed the algorithm and recomend the dvd cast commentary to anyone who will listen, love this series!)

      Live studio audiences can add to both the performance and the recording. Although it does have it's challenges, the finale of this season demonstrates one of them, in that sometimes the audience laughs so hard the actors have to wait to say their lines.
      Laugh tracks just indicate that something is supposed to be funny and are often added on based not on a group opinion but on one person's sense of humor.

    Huzzah, series two, and the introduction of mk. 1 of my favorite character!
    Krytie is the unusual heart of the show at times, because he's fresh and clean with it. His brief talk with Lister about his dreams is my favorite kind of science fiction; what will robots become in our absence, and if you'll indulge the mind a bit, his mention of a garden that he made had me remembering a quote from Lord Buckley. “The flowers, the gorgeous, mystic multi-coloured flowers are not the flowers of life, but people, yes people are the true flowers of life, and it has been a most precious pleasure to have temporarily strolled in your garden.”
    That-that's chaos theory, yeah..

    The whole season/series malarkey isn't really a big thing, there may be some who get energised by it, but there are very few of them. It's generally a cultural thing - British broadcasts have traditionally had around six episodes per run, whereas the norm for NBC/ABC/CBS would have been about 26, so half the year, a veritable season

    When this second series was filmed and produced it was known for production reasons as Series 2; however, the week before this episode aired the name of series effectively changed thanks to the release of that weeks "The Radio Times" (The UK equivilent of the US TV guide for BBC TV and Radio channels at the time). They had listed the series/episode as Red Dwarf II, and carried on listing it as such for the remainder of the series. The writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor (aka Grant Naylor) liked this so much the reformatted the series going forward so they all used the Roman Numeral format.

    The new 'Bridge' set is still meant to be the same drive room from season 1 but seen from the opposite side. Clearly it's not since the proportions are off but yeah. As for Kryten, hopefully this doesn't count as a spoil but although he does become a main cast member in Season 3, he's gone for the rest of season 2 (apparently he spent a few months touring the Cargo decks on Listers bike). It's implied when he returns in Season 3 that he's always been there, he just doesn't show up in any further S2 episodes.

    One thing that might not be clear, just from watching it, the background lore of the show is that in this future, Esperanto, the artificially constructed "international" language, somehow became the interstellar _lingua franca._ That's why Rimmer has been trying to learn it since -season- series 1, and that's why many signs around Red Dwarf are written in English and Esperanto, like the "Level/Nivelo" signs denoting the deck number.
    The new room you were talking about was the cockpit of the shuttle that they used to leave Read Dwarf and land next to the crashed ship. I forget the name of this ship, but later on, they'll be using the distinctive, green "Starbug" for their excursions.
