Prior to doing Red Dwarf Chris Barrie did a stage act (comedy) DOING impressions. So, when it comes time for Rimmer to do "impressions" of Lister or other members, it is due to the fact that he has had a LONG time getting to work on not only their speech patterns, but their tone and their mannerisms as well..... making Rimmer the BEST one at impersonating other members, although occasionally Lister or Kryton do it to. Also, Cat ( Danny John Jules) is a professionally trained dancer. Lister ( Craig Charles) had a successful but short run as a comedian before the show. BUT, the reason his comedy work was short lived was due to being cast in Red Dwarf as an "Unknown comic". AFTER the success of Red Dwarf, it was impossible for him to get back "on the road doing stand up" because everywhere he went, he was seen as Lister and nobody really wanted to see him doing his own comedy routines, but variations of how Lister would do the routines.
Chris Barrie is known for his impressions, not only of the other cast, which you will see him do periodically on the show, but also in general. Before (and while) he was on Red Dwarf, he did voices for a British satirical show called 'Spitting Image', which represented politicians and celebrities of the day as exaggerated, caricature-like puppets, where he did the voices of Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr, Princes Charles and Andrew, John Cleese and Michael Palin of Monty Python and Sean Connery among many others.
@@stefpugsley I think that is Backwards. Rob is a little rough around the edges. Chris reads Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life. Rob Grant reads Backwards, Craig Charles reads Last Human.
Queeg is easily one of the best “life on the ship” episodes of Red Dwarf - no huge mindbending Sci-Fi concepts , just a brilliant character led sitcom. I love both flavours of Red Dwarf though!
Fun fact: Danny John Jules and Charles Augins worked together years before voicing 'Fireries' in Labyrinth. BTW there's the deleted scenes with more of Rimmer's 'mimicking' and Craig Charles did that stunt - bouncing off a trampoline over the control panel onto soft landing mat beneath the frame.
All the cast in this weren't professional actors. Holly was a stand-up comedian, Cat was a dancer, Lister was a poet and Rimmer was an impressionist. Check out Cat in Blade 2, where he plays a vampire.
This was the second episode I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience for the recording of (see my comment on the Gals' Thanks for the Memory reaction for the first). Couple of things I remember from the recording. The Lister console explosion was pre-recorded and shown to us on monitors at that point in the show. The split Rimmer was done live, with Chris wearing bright blue trousers and a member of crew wearing Rimmer's trousers and his upper half in a bright blue body stocking. Yes, they did all the chroma-key effects with blue screen back then, rather than today's ubiquitous green screen.
I'd love to be in the audience for a taping of a comedy someday... but I really don't think I'd have liked to for THIS episode particularly... just the way it was revealed on the show was PERFECTION !
So glad to see y'all appreciating Chris Barrie, Rimmer is my favorite character 😊And you're right, he DESPERATELY needs therapy. He's basically 20 neuroses in a trench coat. So, one more episode before Kryten joins, but this next one is SO WILD!!! It's a favorite!!

Chris Barrie narrated audiobook versions of the Red Dwarf novels and did all the voices. His imitations are really spot on. From what I can understand about the character of Kryten and his absence from the remainder of Series 2; at some point his guilt circuits overrode, and he was back to his old self albeit with a full body refit.
Chris Barrie is definitely super talented. During the second half to Red Dwarf's initial 8 series run he had himself another monster hit show that he starred in called the Brittas Empire. If you think Rimmer is annoying, wait till you see Gordon Brittas. Completely different character by the way. Not just Chris Barrie playing Chris Barrie in a different show
Queeg is one of my favourite episodes 😅 You mention about Chris Barrie doing impersonations, he actually used to do voices on a TV show in the UK called "Spitting Image", where a bunch of incredibly unflattering puppets were made of politicians and celebrities to basically parody the crap out of them! 😂
Tomorrow's the series finale XD the Gallifrey Gals better be prepared for what comes. One of their most burning questions will be answered can't wait to see their reactions
If you like Chris Barrie, then another great series to watch is The Brittas Empire, where he plays the (entirely unlikeable) manager of a leisure centre. Sounds like a really dull premise, but I loved it!
Chris Barrie rose to fame as an impressionist, so this was an opportunity for him to show off. Have you ever seen the music video to Land of Confusion by Genesis, the one with Ronald and Nancy Regan in it? Or have you ever listened to the Frankie Goes To Hollywood album with Regan making interjections over the music? Chris Barrie did Ronald Regan's voice in both cases.
Hi Gals! Yes Chris Barrie is a noted impressionist. He did a lot of the voices in satirical puppet show Spitting Image in the 80s. Also about 10 years ago, there was a stage show of Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy in the UK with most of the original radio cast. Because Peter Jones who played 'The Book' died 30 years ago, they had a series of guests to read the book. In Manchester where I saw it, Danny John Jules read the book and also performed The Dish of the Day in full on Cat persona! HHGTTG meets Red Dwarf it shouldn't have worked, but it did!!!
Peter Jones was so right for the book in the first two radio series , a shame it took so long for them to make the rest of the books and William Franklin was good but I'd love to have heard Danny's take on the role .
@DavidSmith-cx8dg it was a very measured performance. His normal speaking voice did Douglas Adams 's work justice. His Dish of the Day was just a work of genius! Hearing him say the final line 'I'll just nip off and shoot myself, don't worry I'll be very humane! WAOOOW!' and then dancing of the stage with that trademark shuffle brought the house down!
As far as i remember kryten was not originally meant to come back. It was decided that the cast needed another character who was both willing and able to do things. Rimmer and Holly being unable, and the Cat usually being unwilling. Rather than create a new character they decided to just bring back Kryten.
I remember my teenage self travelling to work in 1988 the day after this first aired. Me and my mates were laughing our heads off at the big reveal. Absolute classic.
This was the very first episode of Red Dwarf I ever saw, back on first transmission in October 1988, though it was Series 3 the following year that got me hooked on the show. It remains one of my favourite ever sitcoms, and great to see you are enjoying it so much.
14:20 Oh god yes! Those singing creatures in Labyrinth who take their body parts off are the creepiest! Remember this line? "Hey, her head don't come off!" "Of course it doesn't!"
Queeg is another brilliant early Red Dwarf episode. Charles Augins is superb as Queeg and he and Holly's rivalry is hilarious. Also, we get to see the font of all Holly's knowledge in the form of the Illustrated Junior Encyclopaedia Of Space (tm). Great reaction as always, glad you're still enjoying the Boys from the Dwarf 😆👍
I just love the absurdity of the Smart Shoes story. It's so ridiculous, even Rimmer questions it. Like, how did they walk all the way from Norway to Burma in a single night? You can only just fly that far in that time!
If you've ever seen the Genesis video for 'Land of Confusion,' Chris Barrie is the one playing Ronald Reagan. He was in the show 'Spitting Image,' which is where those puppets are from.
Fun fact... DJJ wasn't just a voice in Labyrinth, he was one of the dancers that performed the Fireys and the choreographer for that Firey dance scene... Gates McFadden, yes, none other than Dr Crusher herself. Great episode next, then Mrs Ape's favourite season and honestly some of the best of The Crimson Short One.
Chris Barrie is a fantastic actor. Character wise Lister is the one we all favour cause he's decent while Rimmer is a smeghead but the show wouldn't be the same without him. Originally Alan Rickman was suppose to play Rimmer, but Barrie is the best choice. So glad you gals love this show.
Kryten is flying around the galaxy on his space motorcycle, because Lister taught him to rebel. Honestly, if you didn't know he was coming back for good, you would never expect to see him again after that one episode.
The explanation for what happened to Kryten is in the Star Wars style scrolling text. When you see it, you may want to pause the video because it scrolls by really fast.
I first saw Norman Lovett on TV as a stand up comedian before Red Dwarf and I think most people in the UK had an idea of who he was before, same is true of Craig Charles and his poetry . Chris Barrie was the most well known before Red Dwarf, only Danny John-Jules was unknown as he was a dancer. Clare Grogan (Kochanski|) was probably the most famous as she had a lead role in the film Gregory's Girl and several pop chart hits in the UK top 40. Norman Lovett still does comedy and you'll find lots of him on RUclips.
I remember when the 2005 revival series of Doctor Who came out and "Bad Wolf" ended on a cliffhanger, there was a fake IMDB leak that said Norman Lovett would play Davros in "The Parting of the Ways" (rather than the Dalek Emperor we got). That would have been something.
Chris Barrie started out as an impressionist, Norman Lovett was a stand-up comedian, and Craig Charles was a poet. Only Danny John-Jules was an actor when the show was cast.
Charles Augins (Queeg) is a dancer/choreographer more than an actor, which is why he has so few acting credits. You'll have seen some of his behind the scenes work at the start of the next episode!
Chris Barrie was a voice impersonator before Red Dwarf started, on the satirical, political puppet show "Spitting Image". That bit in this episode was a flex
The Space Scouts thing is a jibe at the old motto for Scouts in (at least) the UK back in the 80s. It would be all "Dyb Dyb Dyb" (DYB = Do your best) and "Dob Dob Dob" (DOB = Do our best) or something along those lines...thankfully this lingo was retired by the time I joined. And also...Kryten being introduced 6 or so episodes before he becomes a regular isn't so strange. An impossible girl was introduced into a certain series 6 or so episodes before she became a regular (OK, I'm grasping at a technicality here)...
Chris Barry also did some voices on spitting image which was a satirical puppet show during the 80's on itv but red dwarf always used to release the smeg up's for each season on video witch you can still find on RUclips.
Trivia: Grant and Naylor, the writers, had got to the end of the story and had no idea how to resolve it. I can't remember which one came up with the idea of making Queeg a fake and it all just being a joke by Holly, but the other was so impressed he bought him a pint! Also, that really was Craig Charles being blown up there not a stuntman, he insisted on doing the stunt himself.
That is an excellent cat. Love every one of these. Literally discovered you from your first RD Vid. Love being part of your Red Dwarf crew. BOYS FROM THE DWARF!
Queeg was one of my favourite episodes. Chris Barrie (Rimmer) started out doing impressions. Chris Barrie also starred the lead role in the Brittas Empire where he takes smegness to a whole new level. Superbly written and superbly acted. Don't worry Kryten comes back. In later episodes so does the crew. The American who played Captain Hollister was truly brilliant. The cat universe motion picture had me creasing up. You have some superb episodes of Red Dwarf to come. 12 series and each one better than before. Another British comedy from 10 years earlier was The Goodies from the 1970s. The only British sitcom where they were asked to turn the laughter DOWN after a man in Kings Lynn died from a heart attack / brain seizure brought on by laughing continuously for 25 minutes solid. I had to slap my face to stop wetting myself. It is that funny.
Danny John Jules was also two of the Fireys in Labyrinth; he's actually a trained dancer. Chris Barrie used to be one of the impressionists that did the puppet voices for Spitting Image in the 80s. He's also done audio book recordings of the first two Red Dwarf novelizations; he did the whole thing as impressions of the other cast members.
As someone who's already seen all the Red Dwarf episodes, I can pretty much guarantee that your efforts to "will" Kryten to reappear on the series will be successful. A good episode. Nice to see Holly as a main focus of a story.
In the UK, Chris Barrie was really famous for being a commercial voice actor according to the Red Dwarf commentary. Not sure if he still does it or not. He also performed one of the Red Dwarf audiobooks using the impressions from what I understand.
It's a shame that a lot of the boys in red dwarf aren't world famous. They were all big in the UK, Danny had a small role in Blade 2, and Chris probably got the most famous for being Lara crofts butler in Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider films. The other guys did okay, Craig went into the UK's version of battle bots (robot wars in the UK), and later went into a drama\soap opera Where as the guy that is going to play Kryten (if he comes back ;) got famous for the us version of junkyard challenge (called "scrap heap challenge" in the UK)
6:45 was NOT a stunt guy. Was actually Craig Charles doing the stunt, according to the man himself on the episode commentary. If anyone has the chance to watch the episode with cast commentary I advise you do it. Very entertaining and some interesting stories about what filming was like and what they remember from back in the day.
I am so enjoying seeing your reactions to Red Dwarf. My friend Nicky and I were lucky enough to publish 2 Red Dwarf Quiz Books and got to meet all the cast. They are all great in person. It's like seeing it again through fresh eyes.
So much to appreciate in that one! Of course Queeg is the name of the hated captain whose crew depose him in The Caine Mutiny, but the line "This is mutiny Mr. [Officer's name], I'll see you hanged from the highest yardarm in [Name of home port] for this day's work!" is from Mutiny on the Bounty. The actor playing Queeg seems like a drill sergeant, but if I remember correctly, he's the less macho equivalent; a choreographer.
Charles Augins voiced one of the Fireys in Labyrinth - and Danny John Jules (Cat) voiced two others. Charles Augins was also one of the two choreographers for Labyrinth - and Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher in ST:TNG) was the other.

3rd this. Incredibly outrageous, silly and hilarious. Love Brittas Empire!
4th this. The Brittas Empire is amazing
He’s good in Brittas empire the tv series , reminds me a little of fawlty towers I think the girls may like to
5th
Britas Empire is brilliant it’s not sci-Fi so not doesn’t fit with the channel but you Gal’s should absolutely check it out!
Man this episode is one of my favourites.
As far as i remember kryten was not originally meant to come back. It was decided that the cast needed another character who was both willing and able to do things. Rimmer and Holly being unable, and the Cat usually being unwilling. Rather than create a new character they decided to just bring back Kryten.
I dont often subscribe to channels, but when i do its this one.
I remember my teenage self travelling to work in 1988 the day after this first aired. Me and my mates were laughing our heads off at the big reveal.
Absolute classic.
Even though its a scam Holly saying goodbye as he dies always gets me a bit misty eyed😢
It’s a lovely performance by Norman coupled with some great writing.
No, no stunt guy, Craig Charles does most of his own stunts.
Love how much you're enjoying the show!
This was the very first episode of Red Dwarf I ever saw, back on first transmission in October 1988, though it was Series 3 the following year that got me hooked on the show. It remains one of my favourite ever sitcoms, and great to see you are enjoying it so much.
For a second, I thought Paula was going to have an actual weasel.
Charles Augins and Danny John-Jules worked together on Labyrinth, doing vocals for the song "Chilly Down".
Subbed for the Red Dwarf enjoyment, staying for the squishy kitty 😂
The one in the opening or the one in the show?
@@TheGoauldApophis well both naturally. Danny John-Jules is a treasure
Great episode, gals. Keep up the good work .
Chris Barrie was also Angelina Jolie's Butler in the Tomb Raider films.
There are so many good episodes to RD, this is up there with the best of them.
Tch, you two are doing the whole "where's Kryten?? 😦" thing just to make the "well, aaaaactuallyyy!!" people climb the walls, aincha? 😏
That's not why they're doing it, they honestly don't know why he's not there.
But do I hope it's having that effect on those people. 😁
I've been waiting for this one :) Love it! Has one of my favourite lines in anything ever, "April, May, June, July and August fool" :)
Chris barrie done some of the voices on a show called spitting image which used puppets for famous people and holly was a stand up comedian by trade
It is nice that Holly sings a Carpenter's song at the end.
not a stunt guy...he really did launch over that console. Saw that in the season 2 behind the scenes video.
Chris Barrie in the 80s did some of the voices for a show called spitting image
When Kryten returns it is with a new actor playing the role and he becomes a favourite character, a bit of a small spoiler
Chris Barrie used to voice the puppets on the political satire Spitting Image
Chris Barrie voicing the audio books is great.
Thanks for doing these so quickly. It meant I could binge watch get Warped without a Gallifrey Gap!
This episode remains in my top 10 of all time… So simple, but so brilliant
You "GALS" are great ! I can't wait for you to get to series 3, keep it up!
We are talking Jape of the Decade. We are talking April, May, June, July, and August Fool. 😁
Wheeze of the week mate !
lowkey my fave episode of the whole show like
Agreed !
No stuntman, that IS Craig Charles!
It's a shame that a lot of the boys in red dwarf aren't world famous. They were all big in the UK, Danny had a small role in Blade 2, and Chris probably got the most famous for being Lara crofts butler in Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider films.
The other guys did okay, Craig went into the UK's version of battle bots (robot wars in the UK), and later went into a drama\soap opera
Where as the guy that is going to play Kryten (if he comes back ;) got famous for the us version of junkyard challenge (called "scrap heap challenge" in the UK)
"Don't worry, Craig. It'll just be a very small explosion."
He was deaf for the next several minutes after that stunt.
Chris Barrie was an impersonist for Spitting Image (for Ronald Reagan amongst others). He met the writers at the wrap party.
Is Spitting Image streamed anywhere? It should be! We watched it in college and even the Reagan fans enjoyed it!!
@@Skeezer66 I know 80's Spitting Image is streaming on Britbox in the UK, unsurprisingly as the lead partner ITV owns it. So probably Britbox.
@@AlmightyCRJ Thanks!! I have Britbox (for Classic Who), so I'll check it later!
Chris barrie is a comedy veteran and and a skilled impersonater
There is an explanation but be prepared to pause and read as it flashes by
Charles Augins voiced one of the Fireys in Labyrinth - and Danny John Jules (Cat) voiced two others. Charles Augins was also one of the two choreographers for Labyrinth - and Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher in ST:TNG) was the other.
