I introduced my friend to Red Dwarf by showing them this episode. Their exact words were: "I never thought I'd see a camper version of Hitler than the one from The Producers!"
@@williamwhitty7243 the American version of Ghosts isn't that bad, it's just not nearly as good. If you hadn't seen the original, it wouldn't be offensively bad (like the American attempt at Red Dwarf was).
I had completely forgotten about Rimmer's line about ramps in this episode, but as a physically disabled person I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved your reaction to it, you have made my day xD Thank you for being wonderful people
Fun fact, the song Lister and Hitler were going to play in the "jam" scene was Toto's 1982 hit "Africa". but the producers refused once they learned it was Hitler that would br playing it.
Because of how prominent Hitler is in this episode, I can never watch the scene where the professor reveals he can walk without quoting "My Fuehrer! I can walk!" from Dr. Strangelove.
I went to see this episode being recorded at the famous Pinewood Studios, it was around the time The Force Awakens was filming and the warm up comedian tried getting the Audience to storm the star wars sound stage.
Lister jamming with Hitler will always be in my favourite moments of Dwarf ever. Something hilarious, but only this show could ever think of it, let alone actually do it
The bit trying to get Starbug to start always reminds me of an old episode of Dr Who. The Fourth Doctor story State of Decay, set in a pocket dimension, saw the titular character attempting to start an outdated computer to no avail. A last desperate thumping to the op of the machine gets it working, to which to Doctor comments, "Definitely Earth technology."
The singing scene is so funny! One of my highlights of the whole show. Fun fact they had to change the song last minute cause they got the rights for a certain song by Toto about a certain continent. But they didn't say the context of the use. They then felt they best disclose what the context/who was singing it and it was then refused. (Can't say I blame the rights holders admittedly). I believe Craig suggested The Happy Wanderer, but I'm not 100% Ryan was amazing in this episode, one of my favourite guest stars of the show.
@Cheddarhead7 haha yeah, they even tried to stress that to them but connotations were there and I imagine they were thinking of what if someone watched it out of context too.
A super good episode. Easily on par with just about any golden age story. Brilliant premise, asks big questions, has a properly uncomfortable moral dilemma, great gags, superb guest cast. And it’s not even the best episode of the season (nor is it the worst! That one is…. something alright).
Weird science comes to mind . A great way to start the second series with a bunch of baddies , Lister and Hitler a highlight and a loopy Professor at the end . Cat and his poker face saved the day . I'm liking the way Danny gets more to do in this Dave era . Fun reactions as always , looking forward to seeing Kat & Paula reacting to the rest of the series and the Promised land .
Hitler gets referenced in a lot of comedy here for some reason. Someone made a sitcom called "Heil Honey I'm Home!" about Hitler living next door to a Jewish couple. It was cancelled after one episode, but I've seen clips of it on documentaries.
that selfie.. great ep. I'm no historian, but doing a quick look into Messalina, it appears she is yet again a victim of shaming to destroy her politically at the time. There may be a kernel of truth, but for the most part, yet another in a long line of women in history painted to look far worse in history. Other emperors had far worse skeletons in their closet, but it is only really weaponized against her. Thought you might want to know
Arguably this is almost the 4th Hitler appearance on Red Dwarf: you've remembered Timeslides and Meltdown, albeit not by titles, but there was also the episode Out of Time, the series VI finale, which had the future versions of the crew confirming they were good friends with people generally considered to be "a bit dodgy". Like Hermann Goering, Catherine the Great, Joseph Stalin, Vladislaus Tepes, Nero, and the Hitlers (after all, "who wants to go round Mahatma Gandhi's for an all-night rave?"). Granted, most of that list was only mentioned in a deleted scene, but "dinner with the Hitlers" made the broadcast version. We don't see it though. As for there being a lot of Hitler for a show 3 million + years in the future- it's a sci-fi show, with time travel being an acknowledged part of the setting. They were eventually going to do a Hitler story, it's almost the rules (If time travel, then Nazis). The unusual thing is the surprising lack of time travel in two of those stories...
I remember exactly where I was the first time I saw this episode. I was visiting an old friend that I hadn’t really seen in a very long time. Back in the 1990s when we were teenagers together we used to love this show. We laughed so hard at the “it’s because I’m a Hitler isn’t it” line, and I though I’d pee myself when Hitler and Lister are jamming together. For me this moment was on a par to the brilliant Dogs Milk sequence in series 2 and was easily my favourite episode since series 5. Ryan Gage was brilliant as Louis XIII in a BBC adaptation of The 3 Musketeers, with Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu.
(Trying to keep a timeline of Kat's hairdos with a cork board, tacks, and yarn). Nope, nope, it doesn't work out. Even accounting for recording times, and release times, a human can't do this. Kat has spare heads. It's the only way it works. Kat is a mechanoid, and has spare heads.
Been waiting for this one for months the selfie gets me everytime. Thanks for the fun reactions ladies, dreading you getting to the end of the red dwarf content. *cough* more star trek *cough*
What a great reaction again. Nowadays, it's my tradition for my wednesday evenings, but unfortunately it's slowly coming to end. I also have a question, will you watch "the promised land"?
The speed at which Cat pulls the trigger always kills me. Meltdown is second Hitler. Question answer : I like this episode, and I like the next episode. The one after that is the worst ever, and then three bangers. #WarmandSnuggly

THIS… may be my favorite episode ever ! Not of Red Dwarf ! That would be “Queeg” or “Marooned”; but of Gallifrey Gals. This one hit all my buttons… even the sponsored content (usually I skip that sort of thing), but Into The AM looks to a really great shop with superior, fun and intriguing apparel ! But most of all your reaction to the Rimmer ramp line… with both your mouths agape in dismay ! Oh man… I might make that screenshot my new desktop lol
history is always written by the winners so what we know about medieval people is probably all wrong.. for example in England everyone is taught that King Richard the "lionheart" was a great guy, but some guy on RUclips who knows a lot about history was saying how the king was a really bad guy apparently. Most leaders that are actually good and help the people of a nation are often the least well known leaders. Like American presidents etc. The most well known ones are always the ones that did the most wars. I wouldnt be surprised if some of the bad people from history werent as bad as people make out too... (not including Hitler lol)
Technically he's only been on it once. In meltdown and this episode its just a droid who thinks he's Hitler. So only Time slides is it actually Hitler But references to Hitler are littered through the series, pretty sure he gets a mention most series. Marylyn Monroe and Albert Einstein had similar frequencies.
talking of what people call offensive jokes now.. you guys have to understand that in the 90s and 00s in the UK... anti racists anti sexists would say offensive things on purpose knowing that it was a joke, knowing it was meant to shock the people listening and knowing that it would make people laugh.. but people werent laughing at women, or black people or gay people or disabled people, they were laughing at the people who are actually prejudiced.. the joke was that we listening and the comedian saying it didnt believe it to be true.. but we were laughing at the thing being said.. we are laughing at the offensive character saying it etc.. so for example.. Rimmer (although at times loveable) weve learned he is an ass in 90% of whatever he does and believes... so if he says something about disabled people and how he cant be bothered to have ramps.. the laughing is at him, and the sort of character that would say such a thing.. what people nowadays dont understand is all the offensive stuff from those days was there to make fun of the prejudiced people.. not being prejudiced.. just as THE OFFICE with Ricky Gervais his character often said offensive sexist things or against disabled people.. we were laughing at him... for saying it.. we werent laughing at women and being sexist.. we were anti sexist.. but, like i said, nowadays every is very fascist and youre not even allowed to say anything even if its obviously a joke... what a lot of liberals dont get is that they are acting very much like Nazis.
OK my partner loves you guys and thinks I'm.insane for asking this but are you siblings? I feel like you could be twins, but he thinks I'm nuts for suggesting that. So, are you related?

I think you two smegheads would enjoy ‘Farscape’. (Just wrote the same comment below. Dementia must be setting in).
I introduced my friend to Red Dwarf by showing them this episode. Their exact words were:
"I never thought I'd see a camper version of Hitler than the one from The Producers!"
At 21:37 when Paula says "man I don't want this show to end" - she said the root defining moment we all feel.
"It's because I'm Hitler, isn't it...?" 🤣
It’s a incredible line, delivered beautifully!
I think you two would enjoy ‘Farscape’.
They would love it.
What a great show that is, trippy af, but great!
@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 Frell yeah!
As you are nearing the end of Red Dwarf may I suggest the next UK series you watch is "Ghosts". I think you will absolutely love it.
I’d love to see them react to the U.K. version. I just didn’t enjoy the US version at all.
Blackadder first, but there are many good ones for sure

No!
Yes, for a show set more than 3 million years in the future, there is a suprising amount of Hitler
I had completely forgotten about Rimmer's line about ramps in this episode, but as a physically disabled person I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved your reaction to it, you have made my day xD Thank you for being wonderful people
And Rimmer is 100% the kind of guy who’d be a prick about accessibility. That scene nails him.
(joking) And just when you think you've found a spot to park Starbug.... :-)
The second time we saw Hitler was series 4 episode 6 - Meltdown. Where they teleported to a planet of waxtroids.
Fun fact, the song Lister and Hitler were going to play in the "jam" scene was Toto's 1982 hit "Africa". but the producers refused once they learned it was Hitler that would br playing it.
Dolfy was adorable in this episode
Timeslides(3), Meltdown(4), Blue(7), Cured(12)
Hitler wasn't in Blue I don't think? Although Goering did get a mention in that episode when Kryten is deleting his lingerie database!
Because of how prominent Hitler is in this episode, I can never watch the scene where the professor reveals he can walk without quoting "My Fuehrer! I can walk!" from Dr. Strangelove.
