I introduced my friend to Red Dwarf by showing them this episode. Their exact words were: "I never thought I'd see a camper version of Hitler than the one from The Producers!"
I had completely forgotten about Rimmer's line about ramps in this episode, but as a physically disabled person I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved your reaction to it, you have made my day xD Thank you for being wonderful people
Fun fact, the song Lister and Hitler were going to play in the "jam" scene was Toto's 1982 hit "Africa". but the producers refused once they learned it was Hitler that would br playing it.
Fun fact about the Hitler, Lister jam session apparently they had troubles getting the rights for a song to play, most record companies agreed to give the rights cause its Red Dwarf but then they mention Hitler and so they would retract it 😆. Also apparently Ryan Gage got the role for being a mega fan boy and tweeting at the producer for a role so gals if you're ever in the UK and fancy your chances 😅
@@williamwhitty7243 the American version of Ghosts isn't that bad, it's just not nearly as good. If you hadn't seen the original, it wouldn't be offensively bad (like the American attempt at Red Dwarf was).
Lister jamming with Hitler will always be in my favourite moments of Dwarf ever. Something hilarious, but only this show could ever think of it, let alone actually do it
I went to see this episode being recorded at the famous Pinewood Studios, it was around the time The Force Awakens was filming and the warm up comedian tried getting the Audience to storm the star wars sound stage.
You may recognise Ryan Gage from the 2nd & 3rd Hobbit films - he played Alfrid - the Master of Lake-Town's servant. He also plays King Louis XIII in BBC's The Musketeers - which I would HIGHLY recommend!
The singing scene is so funny! One of my highlights of the whole show. Fun fact they had to change the song last minute cause they got the rights for a certain song by Toto about a certain continent. But they didn't say the context of the use. They then felt they best disclose what the context/who was singing it and it was then refused. (Can't say I blame the rights holders admittedly). I believe Craig suggested The Happy Wanderer, but I'm not 100% Ryan was amazing in this episode, one of my favourite guest stars of the show.
@Cheddarhead7 haha yeah, they even tried to stress that to them but connotations were there and I imagine they were thinking of what if someone watched it out of context too.
A super good episode. Easily on par with just about any golden age story. Brilliant premise, asks big questions, has a properly uncomfortable moral dilemma, great gags, superb guest cast. And it’s not even the best episode of the season (nor is it the worst! That one is…. something alright).
Because of how prominent Hitler is in this episode, I can never watch the scene where the professor reveals he can walk without quoting "My Fuehrer! I can walk!" from Dr. Strangelove.
Weird science comes to mind . A great way to start the second series with a bunch of baddies , Lister and Hitler a highlight and a loopy Professor at the end . Cat and his poker face saved the day . I'm liking the way Danny gets more to do in this Dave era . Fun reactions as always , looking forward to seeing Kat & Paula reacting to the rest of the series and the Promised land .
I remember exactly where I was the first time I saw this episode. I was visiting an old friend that I hadn’t really seen in a very long time. Back in the 1990s when we were teenagers together we used to love this show. We laughed so hard at the “it’s because I’m a Hitler isn’t it” line, and I though I’d pee myself when Hitler and Lister are jamming together. For me this moment was on a par to the brilliant Dogs Milk sequence in series 2 and was easily my favourite episode since series 5. Ryan Gage was brilliant as Louis XIII in a BBC adaptation of The 3 Musketeers, with Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu.
that selfie.. great ep. I'm no historian, but doing a quick look into Messalina, it appears she is yet again a victim of shaming to destroy her politically at the time. There may be a kernel of truth, but for the most part, yet another in a long line of women in history painted to look far worse in history. Other emperors had far worse skeletons in their closet, but it is only really weaponized against her. Thought you might want to know
THIS… may be my favorite episode ever ! Not of Red Dwarf ! That would be “Queeg” or “Marooned”; but of Gallifrey Gals. This one hit all my buttons… even the sponsored content (usually I skip that sort of thing), but Into The AM looks to a really great shop with superior, fun and intriguing apparel ! But most of all your reaction to the Rimmer ramp line… with both your mouths agape in dismay ! Oh man… I might make that screenshot my new desktop lol
You guys won’t be done with it, you’ll just be joining the ranks of us waiting for MORE in real time. It’s always a long wait, but at least you guys know more is coming! Sometimes it’s just… limbo. Love y’all! 👍✌️
The bit trying to get Starbug to start always reminds me of an old episode of Dr Who. The Fourth Doctor story State of Decay, set in a pocket dimension, saw the titular character attempting to start an outdated computer to no avail. A last desperate thumping to the op of the machine gets it working, to which to Doctor comments, "Definitely Earth technology."
Hitler gets referenced in a lot of comedy here for some reason. Someone made a sitcom called "Heil Honey I'm Home!" about Hitler living next door to a Jewish couple. It was cancelled after one episode, but I've seen clips of it on documentaries.
Arguably this is almost the 4th Hitler appearance on Red Dwarf: you've remembered Timeslides and Meltdown, albeit not by titles, but there was also the episode Out of Time, the series VI finale, which had the future versions of the crew confirming they were good friends with people generally considered to be "a bit dodgy". Like Hermann Goering, Catherine the Great, Joseph Stalin, Vladislaus Tepes, Nero, and the Hitlers (after all, "who wants to go round Mahatma Gandhi's for an all-night rave?"). Granted, most of that list was only mentioned in a deleted scene, but "dinner with the Hitlers" made the broadcast version. We don't see it though. As for there being a lot of Hitler for a show 3 million + years in the future- it's a sci-fi show, with time travel being an acknowledged part of the setting. They were eventually going to do a Hitler story, it's almost the rules (If time travel, then Nazis). The unusual thing is the surprising lack of time travel in two of those stories...

At 21:37 when Paula says "man I don't want this show to end" - she said the root defining moment we all feel.
"It's because I'm Hitler, isn't it...?" 🤣

The second time we saw Hitler was series 4 episode 6 - Meltdown. Where they teleported to a planet of waxtroids.
Yes, for a show set more than 3 million years in the future, there is a suprising amount of Hitler
