Christopher Reeve embodied Superman to such a degree that the artists at DC comics began to draw Superman to resemble Christopher Reeve in the comics for a few years.
It's primarily in the issues drawn by artist Gary Frank since 2009. DC obtained permission from the Reeve estate to do so. It started in "Superman: Secret Origin" and "Superman: Brainiac." Both are still in print.

I remember being in Niagara Falls as a kid when they were filiming that scene, Christopher Reeve was soooo nice, saying hi, greeting everyone, taking pictures, and signing autographs
It's hard not to consider Christopher Reeve the ultimate Superman. He's certainly the one from my generation, and no one since has managed to win me over.
George Reeves was one generations Superman. Christopher Reeve is our generations Superman. Henry Cavill is this generations Superman. BUT, Christopher Reeve was THE BEST. RIP to all 3 Supermen.
@tylermcclain5332 I think you're probably right. Those first few seasons of that Clark-Lana intense yearning, and Spelling being the Clark with the puppy-dog eyes? Yeah, she'll love that if she watches it. Esp. how Clark gets his heat vision, for example. Erica Durance made a great Lois, too, when she was added to the Smallville mix. Oh, and the Kents! Best Ma and Pa ever. Best Lex, too. It had a lot going for it. Such a shame Spelling insisted on sticking to his "no tights, no flights" clause in his contract. Yeah, Addie, you definitely need to watch at least the first few seasons of Smallville.
Man, Margot Kidder's chemistry with Christopher Reeve is unmatched in these movies. She truly made Lois a very entertaining character and made it her own.
27:09 I am so old that I saw this in theaters, lol. Anyway, when the crowd saw Superman flying back after losing his powers, everyone cheered loudly. My 9 year old self was in Heaven.
This was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. I swear it has challenged my life to live up to the standards of perfection and discontent of perfection, I cannot judge between the two. Bless your mother. Live long and prosper!!!
When he deciides to tell her who he is, you can see him "change", even with his back to us, that he if finally "owning" who he really is. Top notch subtle acting!
Christopher Reeve portrayed Superman with _only his back visible_ better than anyone else has ever been able to do with their full body and face. 😀 It honestly and sincerely saddens me to realize that so many younger people only know of those angsty, brooding, and morose Henry Cavil movies to think of what Superman is supposed to be like (they even made his _costume_ darker and dingier, for God's sake, like it had been dragged through a pile of coal or something!) Making Superman darker and edgier like Batman is _not_ making him any more realistic; making him angsty and morose is _not_ making him more relatable. And it isn't even anything new, because people have been making those exact same tired arguments since before the first Christopher Reeve movie was released. But people like Zack Snyder will just _never_ comprehend what Superman is supposed to be. People like that think the main purpose of superheroes is to "beat up bad guys" and just can't comprehend that their primary purpose is _to save people._
@@AaronLitz If you've not been watching "Superman & Lois" you've been missing out the most wholesome live action Superman in years. It just finished it's four season run with a great finale. The show is absolutely full of heart and emotion and character and totally gets what Superman is meant to be. The 'Superdad' angle it goes with really works extremely well especially for us kids who grew up with the Reeve films and are now older people ourselves with our own kids.
Chris was the best at this. Ppl have always joked that the glasses are a horrible disguise but he could almost disguise himself with body language alone.
@@James-z2c7g yep that post-interview scene in the first movie cemented Christopher Reeve's portrayal of both Clark and Superman as "separate" individuals
@@AaronLitz I absolutely agree, but I also second that you MUST start watching Superman and Lois on the CW. I was skeptical at first because I've hated the CW's superhero shows, but this one is set apart from all of them and has a much more grounded tone but without giving us a brooding Superman. Tyler Hoechlin might be the best Superman AND Clark Kent since Christopher Reeve himself. It's a more subtle Clark than Reeve's, but he's still distinct from Superman, and Superman is warm and caring and takes joy in what he does. It's a beautiful version of the character, and I was so incredibly, pleasantly surprised by it.
I love that this movie shows Superman learning from Luthor. In the first movie, Luthor brags about brains over brawn after he tricked Superman into opening the chest with kryptonaite. In this movie, Superman tries defeating Zod by force, but after seeing the collateral damage, he decides to use Luthor's tactic.
It's also not how you'd think Superman would win. No one went into this thinking "Superman is going to save the world by lying." It's a twist no one sees coming.
Hehehe - you're definitely not the only one, Addie. My mom just turned 75, and when I was a kid, the only comic book movies she'd want to watch with me were Superman movies - yes, you guessed it, because of the dreamy Christopher Reeve 🙂
Objectively, even though both Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman are Hollywood legends, it's nuts that the man playing the titular role in both the first and second movies in this franchise wasn't given top billing in the opening credits. Although it's been popular since 1989's Batman to make superheroes more brooding and dark, it's the clean-cut, wholesomeness of Christopher Reeve as Superman that will always make him embody the goodness that superheroes were designed to represent, and always make him the best. (And Reeve is hands-down the most dashing actor in that role, ever!)
Fun Fact. General Zod was played by Terrance Stamp. He also played the disembodied voice of Jor-El for several seasons in the Smallville TV series (2001-2011). Plus he played Chancellor Vallorum in Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace!
And the Kinks song Waterloo Sunset - 'Terry meets Julie Waterloo station, Every Friday night' is about him and his then partnerJulie Christie. Or at least it was until Ray Davies changed his mind recently.
I highly recommend checking out the "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut" which was released in the mid-2000s. Superman 1 and 2 were being made at the same time by the same director, this version you watched is the Theatrical version which was made by a replacement after Richard Donner was let go mid-way during filming. The Donner Cut is arguably better as it makes more sense and doesn't have silly powers like Super-Amnesia Kiss, that was all "Silver Age of Comics" bad writing where he had abilities like Super-ventriloquism or Super-mathematics, Super-etc.
Though it also essentially repeats parts of "Superman" (because _both_ movies were originally different) and includes "unfinished" scenes. So agreed, it's definitely worth checking out but it's also _definitely_ better to watch the theatrical cut _first_ (IMO). (i've seen at least one reactor go in blind to the Donner cut as a first viewing and of course they were, understandably, very confused :)
THAT was Silver Age tomfoolery. Same as Zod's levitation beam and Zod, Ursa and Non using energy beams from their palms and all of them teleporting around the Fortress.
Inclusion of the "humor" and extra non-comic book powers was the idea of the replacement director. Those mistakes are the reason I prefer the Donner Cut of Supernan II.
In all fairness, there were MANY weird powers in the Silver Age. It's my favourite era of comics. I have most of the action comics from Silver and Bronze age
Back in 1969, Larry Niven wrote an essay called “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex” that basically explains in detail why Superman might need to give up his powers to enjoy a physical relationship with a regular human.
There's a Superman Celebration every June in Metropolis, Illinois where actors from this movie and other productions gather. I was able to see Margot Kidder (Lois) and Sarah Douglas (Ursa-the evil female) answer fan questions. Margot passed away not long after this appearance but Sarah was so attentive and caring toward her. It was nice seeing these two being friends after playing enemies on screen! If you go to this event, there's a giant Superman statue and a world-class Superman museum which is worth the trip on it's own!
23:34 This punk in the diner is played by former professional wrestler, the late Howard "Pepper" Martin. Fun fact: He was born in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario.
But nowhere near the weird powers he had in the comics of the time. I like the argument that the additional powers were a result of the fortress's defenses.
No no... you're right, Addie. Christopher Reeve IS Superman. Everyone else had to live up to him. PS: I highly recommend the series Superman & Lois. It explores what life would be like if Clark and Lois got married and had kids, while Clark remains Superman. It's a terrific series! Tyler Hoechlin definitely fills Reeve's shoes.
I love Superman & Lois, though I guess my only complaint is how it’s basically just Superman existing within our more realistic world, not too different from Man of Steel. It's also a reality that only has Superman as a hero, would've been fun to see other heroes visiting the farm from time to time, such as Flash. It lacks the fantastical and cosmic elements I would’ve loved to see explored in a Superman show. But since we’re getting Superman (2025), I’m glad we got Superman & Lois, best CW show no doubt about it and is great for someone wanting to see Superman & Lois together as a married couple. Superman: The Animated Series would be a better deep dive into the world of Superman for anyone wanting more of the character. It has one of the best depictions of Superman’s origin and is filled with fun adventures on Earth and beyond. Plus, it has plenty of great crossovers with other DC heroes, like Flash, Batman, and more.
If someone such as Addie wants to see Superman be with Lois while remaining Superman, then I agree that "Superman & Lois" is the way to go. Tyler Hoechlin is my second-favorite Superman after Christopher Reeve, and I think I like Bitsie Tulloch even better than Margot Kidder. If you want to see Superman interact with other DC heroes though, then I agree that the cartoon is the way to go.
Seconded. Or thirded. Tyler Hoechlin comes very close to Christopher Reeve for me. He plays a perfectly dorky Clark while playing a heroic Superman. It also realistically depicts the loving relationship between Clark and Lois and how they raise their kids together.
@@LittleGalaxyBoy You know... now that you mention it, you're right about Superman: The Animated Series. It's quite special also! When I read the comic books, Tim Daly's voice is what I hear. Much like Kevin Conroy is the voice I hear when I read Batman books.
For what it’s worth, Superman and Lois eventually managed to find a way to be together without any power sacrificing or memory erasing in the original comics. And as of this writing, they’re happily married and have a superpowered son named Jonathan ^_^
There is a deleted scene where after Zod, Ursa and Non fight off the military, the little boy who begs Zod to release his father rides off on a horse to get help. Non takes a light that he ripped off of the patrol car and throws it at the boy with enough force to kill him. A townswoman cries "He was just a boy!" to which Ursa coldly replies "Now he'll never be a man!"
@@defblinders9585 that scene is included in Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. I also remember seeing it when I was about 4 years old on television. Strictly speaking, that early 80’s television airing of the movie was not The Richard Donner Cut. It is better than TRDC, but it is probably the version of the movie they used to create The Richard Donner Cut.
Thank you! I haven't seen either version in years to the point where I can't recall which stuff is in with one anymore. But watching this I kept thinking "Don't they kill that kid? Or am I imaging that?" That did happen.
@ yes. And to your credit, the version of the movie with the killing of the boy aired twice on television in early and late 1982, I think. And then it was not widely seen again until “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut” was first released in late 2006.
@@nickperkins8477 There are actually a couple of different "made for TV" special cuts like that where they added extra scenes. That's where I first saw the scene too, just on regular network TV in the early 80s.
@ yeah I know they did one of those for Superman III, as well. I think the television version improves Superman III, but I don’t remember it as clearly as I remember the the extended TV versions of Superman: The Movie or Superman II.
You might want to check out Superman Returns (2006), which is intended as a direct sequel to this film. It uses the John Williams Superman theme and Brandon Routh is the closest thing to Christopher Reeve you're going to see besides Reeve himself. You get some more answers on the Lois Lane/Superman romance, too. This was lovely! Thank you!

@@GeorgeTropicana How is that cringe? Without the groundwork that these two films made, we wouldn’t have The Dark Knight or X2… heck we wouldn’t have had X-Men or Spider-Man.
The diner scene at the end had a scene deleted before it that saw Clark witness Jimmy getting bullied by a member of staff and it reminded Clark that bullies need to be put in their place. hey should have left it in.
One of those ridiculous powers he received in the Silver Age. I think the memory wipe was used once in the comics when he kissed a bunch of women, but the "Super Kiss" was used a couple of times. He received his Superbreath during the same era, also. Most of the powers he and Zod used in the film either came from that time, or would have fit in back then. That being said, Lester really fucked up Donner's 2nd film, and did even worse with the slapstick in S:III.
19:10 LOL That would be a great Robot Chicken parody. Superman flies around the world to get food and comes back with a bizarre Kryptonian version of what he thinks is good, romantic food: A dead parrot, a bale of barley, a half-eaten orca, and, for some reason, a length of industrial cable. "Dinner time!"
A classic argument: 11:32 to when Superman catches the kid, plus the bits you edited out = the longest fall into Niagara Falls ever! In reality, it would take around 3.2 seconds for someone to fall from the top of Horseshoe Falls to the bottom. My stretch excuse is the shots of Clark changing into Superman are relative to his speed/perception, meaning it only takes fractions of seconds in real time.
Reeve and his performance is truly untouchable. He set the trend for everyone else to follow and he almost made it impossible with how perfect he was. If you're looking for some wonderful NEW Superman stuff, check out the TV shows "My Adventures with Superman." kind of a young adult anime inspired show that's so adorable, and "Superman and Lois." kind of a grown up family drama where Clark is a father of two. Tyler Hoechlin plays Supes in that one and he really is fantastic. He really paid homage to Reeve while making the role his own. Both excellent TV
If you like the relationship between Superman and Lois, I HIGHLY recommend the TV show of that name, "Superman & Lois" has just concluded it's four season run with an amazing finale episode. It centers around a married Clark and Lois and their twin sons Jordan and Jonathan and it's just absolutely fantastic and my fave Superman stories since these original first couple of Reeve movies. :)
that TV series is has one of the best adaptations of Superman and Lois and the actress playing Lois looks surprisingly like Margot Kidder and Tyler Hoechlin is one of the best Superman/ Clark Kent in live action
I haven't seen the show yet but the boys don't drag it down with teenage high school drama/antics that you musta seen a thousand times in other shows and movies? They're the only thing putting me off from watching it
@@James-ev6dk They have some high school drama/antics but that's cos they're teenagers at high school. At least for first couple seasons. But generally even that tends to be 'super-related'. @@austinb.1611 That's good too but yeah, I mainly recommended "Superman & Lois" to Addie because of how far it goes with Clark and Lois' relationship. Far more than anything ever really has. Kneel before Zod !!!! . . . Now, stand before Zod. Now, twist before Zod. Now. squat before zod. And kneel, and bend, and squat, amd stand .... 😂😂😂 Also, yeah Christopher Reeve was 'The' Superman. In action, and form. His story as an actor was truly inspiring If you end up picking up series, you should consider the early 2000s SMALLVILLE. Reeve has a small part, where he effectively hands over the mantle of Superman to Tom welling in season 2, before he passed away. If you are a fan of Reeve, it can be very moving.
The Third movie for love interest features more of Lona, Clark's High School crush. And the 4th movie hints that the mind wipe doesn't fully work Lois, and she has little bit and pieces that she can remember. Superman Returns wipes 3 and 4 out of continuity, and Lois is aware something must have happened, and is tied to her son.
Late spring, June 1981 I was 13 about to be 14 years old when my uncle god rest his soul took me to watch this at the theater. I had been working out with weights since I was 12 turning 13 the previous June so I especially appreciated the lifting weights reference. I did enjoy the movie and I'm glad you enjoyed it as well Addie. It brings back good memories every time. Thank you.
One subtle detail, in terms of Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent v. Superman - Clark's hair is parted on the right, Superman is on the left So, they decided that "just the glasses" wasn't enough to change up the look, though it is a small one.
So Superman’s birth mother never appears in the Fortress of Solitude in the comics, only Jor-El, but Warner Bros. couldn’t afford to pay Marlon Brando the 25% gross cut of the movie he demanded.
at 28:20 notice after Superman used the mirror to reflect Zod's heat beam back at him, the billboard burnt around Zod except for the area behind him which says "Cool it"; that's Superman talking to Zod through subliminal message.
The "danger for Lois" argument is moot: she's already associated with Superman even without the two of them being together, so she's already in danger.
Huh. Interesting point. Adds to the unspoken levels of the whole Greek tragedy situatiion baked into the Man Of Steel mythos. These paradoxiacal themes is what Stan Lee was always bringing to Mavel. This was DC catching up and attempting to deepen its lore and ground its heroes. Retcons always inevitably create a Whack-A-Mole scenario where you fix one problem and immediately by course-correcting a formerly established piece of canon, a new problem pops up in its place. But if the at the heart of it is an honest attempt to just tell a good story and build upon the continiuty to make it more compelling and real, I appreciate the creatives taking a chance and taking their shot. Shooters shoot. That said, now you got me rethinking this whole thing again. Retcons are nodstalgia crack and our kryptonite all at once.

"I know some Judo." 😆 As you might know by now, martial arts were kind of a big thing back in the 1970s and 1980s, with Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris becoming such big stars, and _The Karate Kid_ (1984), and all that, in addition to numerous Kung Fu movies being imported from Hong Kong. I took Kenpo Karate classes myself as a kid back then, and it really helped prevent people from messing with me, when they were aware. People eventually wised up about everyone taking classes being as invincible as Bruce Lee, but that was how things were back in the day, especially with kids. 😁
It's a funny line _because_ it's self-aware about that "instant Bruce Lee" aspect. I actually took Judo (before this so as you say, Lee was most likely the inspiration - in fact this movie is about the time I quit because whoever decided gradings should be based on _age_ rather than e.g. height/weight clearly had it in for me :).
@@anonymes2884 Exactly, and in this case, it was the practitioner who was delusional about his abilities. 😄 Maybe there were some people like that in real life, too, but usually it was people who didn't study martial arts who had the wrong idea.
2 Fun Facts: I did a one man where I re-enacted the entire movie, live on stage for two hours for charity. Also, I had just been born and my parents took me along to see this movie at the drive in on a double bill with The Elephant Man.
Christopher Reeve was BORN to play Superman & Clark Kent. Nobody will ever top his performances playing both of these contrasting characters. If there were ever a title for Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) Superman actor, it would be Christopher Reeve hands down forever!!
At the rate of sounding pervish, Addie, you are stunning! The little giggles you let out while watching were adorable. Keep up with the Superman videos, and don't forget Superman Returns. It's different actors, but they are supposed to be the same characters. Also, I think Frank Langella was born to play the role of Perry White. So you keep enjoying the movies, and we'll keep enjoying your reactions to them. And Merry Christmas!
They never address how Lois and Clark make it back to civilization from the Fortress in freezing conditions, over hundreds of miles of snow with no winter wear. At least Luthor had a snowmobile and parka.
This is VERY true!! ...We've no choice, except to imagine a way out: Clark/Superman knew that this would be a problem for himself and Lois, before he entered the booth for the first time. So, what the film didn't show us is: he... broke off a small piece of the green crystal, then casually tossed away the larger piece. The small piece was then harnessed to give the human Clark and Lois an 'air boost' 99 percent of the distance from the Fortress of Solitude to the diner, while also providing a temporary, residual 'heat shield' to also prevent them from freezing as they walked the last 2 miles. (The actual movie hints that at least a portion of this theory is plausible: The film shows us that Superman and the three Kryptonian criminals can disappear and reappear in different locations without crossing the intervening space - a sort of modified teleportation. If the Kryptonians can do that with their powers on earth, why couldn't Krypton's advanced technology be used to also do that?) (I have to try to remember: Does the film include shots of human Clark and Lois, making their way on South foot ••with the Fortress of Solitude in the background••? If so, that shot would imply that they made the whole journey from the Fortress to civilization, on foot. ...If the shot I'm describing really exists in the movie, then perhaps they walked on foot, to a point a mile or so away from the Fortress, then activated the crystal shard to initiate the air-jump or teleportation to within range of civilization. ...They didn't jump directly from the Fortress because... . ) This also doesn't address how human-Clark was able to do the return journey back to the Fortress, alone, across hundreds of miles without shelter, food, and without proper protective gear. So... we have to twist ourselves even further into knots: The Fortress was... never hundreds of miles from civilization. It was instead, always only a mile and a half away from the diner, the last outpost of civilization, and it was well camouflaged for all normal people, except for Lex Luthor, who had a device that could penetrate the camouflage. ...The reason that he and Miss Tessmacher had to be on the snowmobile for two days, isn't because the Fortress was so far from civilization, but rather because Lex took a wrong turn at Albuquerque. There: I fixed it.😁
If it makes you feel better, in the comics at the start of 90s, Clark finally began a relationship with Lois, proposed to her before revealing his secret to her. After a few obstacles, chief among them being his own death, followed by the insanity of his resurrection and later a temporary break up over due to Lois's insecurities over Superman being needed more by the World; they were finally married in the second half of the 1990s. They are still married to this day and have a son who was introduced in the comics (and born) back in 2015.

Addie, if all of this movie-watching manages to start you dabbling a bit in movie theater posters, the best Christopher Reeve Supeman original movie poster is one for this movie, Superman II. It's the poster in which the World Trade Towers form a "II" (for the movie number) on the Manhattan skyline in the background. The three Kryptonian villians are flying from the harbor towards it, the viewer is looking from over their shoulders, and Superman is flying at them from Manhattan, determined to stop them. Fun fact. Terence Stamp who plays General Zod played Bernadette in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. If you ever get a chance watch Superman and Lois the series. There were 4 seasons and it just ended. It's about Clark and Lois with a family living in Smallville.
This film also technically has 2 sequels. superman 3 or Siperman Returns which was films over years later and has a recast but is meant to continue from where this film leaves of.
I'm really curious to hear Addie's thoughts on Man of Steel now, especially since it’s such a different take on Superman compared to the movies she’s watched. I remember Natalie Gold watched it a few years ago and didn’t like it, but it was her first experience with Superman, and Man of Steel isn’t the best intro to the character, so that probably played a part. It’s also not really a love story and lacks the chemistry we usually see between Clark and Lois, though it shines in other areas. Plus, Clark himself is a lot more reserved about his feelings. Hopefully, the comments stay civil, though, because every time someone dislikes an aspect of Man of Steel, it turns into a full-on war in the comments. 🌪🙋♂
I'd assume it's even worse as a follow up to having seen Chris Reeve as Superman. Snyder is such a terrible hack, it's hard to imagine liking the movie better when you see all the ways it failed not just as a movie (which you don't need to be familiar with Superman to see) but also as an attempt to be a Superman movie.
Lex was the best in that film, since it released after Man of Steel #1 (2986) which introduced the more corporate CEO take on the character and that's something we see in Quest for Peace.
@@LittleGalaxyBoy It's actually very funny that he really only cares about Real Estate in these first two films. It makes him sound like Trump, who was undoubtably an influence on Man of Steel #1. (Just as a fixture of the 80's billionaire culture.)
You should watch THE RICHARD DONNER CUT of Superman II, as it shows original alternate deleted and extended scenes, because it was intended to be Richard Donner's version, until he was fired by the Salkinds.
Yeah, for sure. I was disappointed to see it was the theatrical cut she was watching, though I'm glad she enjoyed it. Addie, please also watch the Richard Donner Cut! 🙏😃
It may be Richard's vision, but there are elements I prefer in the Lester cut like Jor-El being absent (the Father seemingly forsaking the Son) and Superman's Kryptonian mother representing. Less is more with the repowering scene and Superman's reappearance, though that's IMO.
They used the clips from superman because the two films were filmed at the same time. Only at the final editing stage was Richard donner replaced as director on II after he asked for more cash to do some pick up shots. Really glad you have been enjoying these they were an amazing part of my childhood having a superhero like this to watch.
Thanks for the theatrical verson Superman 2 reaction. As an FYI Christopher Reeve does 2 more Superman films. Unfortunately, they are not good; especially the 4th one. My suggestion is that you do not see the other 2 Supeman films and concentrate on your agenda. Looking forward to hopefully your eventual reaction to Bad Santa after the Home Aloje films.
I'm so happy to watch you absorb this beautiful film! I saw this in the theater in the summer of 1981 (age 7). One of the best theater experiences of my life. It's definitely one of the prizes of my vast collection and a constant reminder of the wonder this film (and the original film) instilled in me as a small child.
One of the reasons, not mentioned explicitly in the movie, that Superman can't be romantic with Lois without giving up his powers is that she is in physical danger from him. Larry Niven wrote an essay on this called "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex."
I remember reading that a long time ago. It was hilarious! Remember, he is the Man Of Steel. That includes his bodily, umm, emissions! Without getting too graphic here on RUclips let's just say "fun time" with Lois would end with her being blown apart literally from the inside out! 😂

@tylermcclain5332
I think you're probably right.
@@bartlebyscrivener2980 It should be noted here that Martha Kent in Smallville was Lana Lang in the 1978 Superman.
Erratum: Welling not Spelling. I don't seem to have an edit option.

Cannot even _imagine_ being _that_ old (by which I mean: same, except I was 8 :).
I remember that, too! I was so excited I remember clapping and jumping around in my seat!
This was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. I swear it has challenged my life to live up to the standards of perfection and discontent of perfection, I cannot judge between the two. Bless your mother. Live long and prosper!!!
Saw this in the theater too but being one of the younger of our generation, did not see the first one at the theater.
@Ryan_Christopher I was 6 when I saw Superman: The Movie in 1978.
When he deciides to tell her who he is, you can see him "change", even with his back to us, that he if finally "owning" who he really is. Top notch subtle acting!
Christopher Reeve portrayed Superman with _only his back visible_ better than anyone else has ever been able to do with their full body and face. 😀
It honestly and sincerely saddens me to realize that so many younger people only know of those angsty, brooding, and morose Henry Cavil movies to think of what Superman is supposed to be like (they even made his _costume_ darker and dingier, for God's sake, like it had been dragged through a pile of coal or something!) Making Superman darker and edgier like Batman is _not_ making him any more realistic; making him angsty and morose is _not_ making him more relatable.
"Superman thank God... I mean, GET HIM!"
Haha
Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor is SO two-faced and self-interested that you have to admire it...
And beating Luthor at his own game. "I knew you'd double-cross me, so I triple-crossed you first."
It's also not how you'd think Superman would win. No one went into this thinking "Superman is going to save the world by lying." It's a twist no one sees coming.
It also tickles me that instead of explaining to Zod he's powerless he lets him find out via the medium of excruciating pain
And the Kinks song Waterloo Sunset - 'Terry meets Julie
Waterloo station, Every Friday night' is about him and his then partnerJulie Christie.
It also has the better version of Lois realizing he's Superman!
Yep, the Dick Donner Cut is my fave Superman II. The villains feel more threatening as well
Hell no. The ending in the Donner cut is somehow even dumber. Is a cheap repeat of the first movie
No. Really the Lester version is far better.
Addie: “What is that? What is that?” LOL. None of us know what the super cellophane S is either!
😂😂😂
THAT was Silver Age tomfoolery. Same as Zod's levitation beam and Zod, Ursa and Non using energy beams from their palms and all of them teleporting around the Fortress.
Inclusion of the "humor" and extra non-comic book powers was the idea of the replacement director.
Those mistakes are the reason I prefer the Donner Cut of Supernan II.
@@Falcun21 It's silver age-ey in that they're new powers that come out of nowhere, but they were never his powers in the silver age.
Addie, I think you’ll LOVE Superman Returns with Brandon Routh as Superman. The only actor who came incredibly close to being Christopher Reeves.
Absolutely this.
Well yeah, his Superman was supposed to be the same as Christopher Reeve's Superman, it was a continuation :)
I think it is a very boring movie.
Oh yeah. Superman returns was a nice continuation of Christopher Reeve's Superman. Addie, you should absolutely watch it.

30:33 "What is that?"
That is Superman branded Saran Wrap.
I was obsessed with this as a kid. He does have a couple of weird powers in this one.
If capturing your enemies with a big plastic logo is weird then I don't want to be normal.
Yeah, I don't like the additions of the powers
But nowhere near the weird powers he had in the comics of the time. I like the argument that the additional powers were a result of the fortress's defenses.
"Did he slip her something to make he forget?"
Yeah, he slipped her the tongue.😂
No no... you're right, Addie.
At the moment of conception of their first child, Clark blows a hole through Lois's head

The classic Superman “ Super Kiss”.
A classic argument:
11:32 to when Superman catches the kid, plus the bits you edited out = the longest fall into Niagara Falls ever!
I'd also throw in the animated series "My Adventures with Superman "
that TV series is has one of the best adaptations of Superman and Lois and the actress playing Lois looks surprisingly like Margot Kidder and Tyler Hoechlin is one of the best Superman/ Clark Kent in live action

If the Kryptonians can do that with their powers on earth, why couldn't Krypton's advanced technology be used to also do that?)
(I have to try to remember: Does the film include shots of human Clark and Lois, making their way on South foot ••with the Fortress of Solitude in the background••? If so, that shot would imply that they made the whole journey from the Fortress to civilization, on foot. ...If the shot I'm describing really exists in the movie, then perhaps they walked on foot, to a point a mile or so away from the Fortress, then activated the crystal shard to initiate the air-jump or teleportation to within range of civilization. ...They didn't jump directly from the Fortress because... . )
This also doesn't address how human-Clark was able to do the return journey back to the Fortress, alone, across hundreds of miles without shelter, food, and without proper protective gear.
So... we have to twist ourselves even further into knots: The Fortress was... never hundreds of miles from civilization.

Christopher Reeve’s Superman has never and will never be topped. Greatest hero of our time.

You get a great view of the face of your crush, the Reeve Superman.
I bought one and framed it, it's pretty cool. You might want to look up the poster and give it a look.
Reeve IS Superman..my second fav is Cavill - But Reeves is next level and was an awesome person. And tho I'm not into guys - Yes he is a very good looking dude. Miss him
Reeve, unless you mean second live action Superman George Reeves (The Adventures of Superman)
@@JasonBorn89My bad, I mean Christopher Reeve...I edited/fixed it. Very confusing tho having two Supes with essentially the same last name
Your crush on Christopher Reeve is absolutely adorable (and absolutely understandable). I miss that man. I saw the first two movies in the theater when I was a kid, it was wondrous.
The documentary about Christopher Reeve is coming out tonight on HBO MAX. I plan to watch it. I hope you can react to it if you want to.
Your personality makes you so much more adorable js It's cute watching your reactions usually I think these vids are goofy most of the time.
After the way Lex treated her at the end of the first movie, I wonder why Miss Tessmacher was still sticking with him.
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoyI like to think she came to her senses.
I remember the first two times I experienced a packed matinee erupted in cheers and thundering applause 😂😂😂, one was Superman crushing Zod's hand and the other one was Lando Calrissian rocketing his was out from inside the Death Star's tunnel flames. 😂😎🏆
Fun fact. Terence Stamp who plays General Zod played Bernadette in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. If you ever get a chance watch Superman and Lois the series. There were 4 seasons and it just ended. It's about Clark and Lois with a family living in Smallville.
I just recommended "Superman & Lois" too. :) Perfect choice for Addie if she wants to see Clark and Lois' relationship fully explored. :)
I wept during the series finale Monday. It was beautiful.
@@kryptoniankaiju Indeed it was.
Agreed she should also react to the show too and show it here
This is fun, catching up on movies i love. Just subscribed, your energy is infectious.
General Zod was played by the actor who played John Tunstall in Young Guns
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoyI've seen that one. I forgot he was in it.
🌪🙋♂
Natalie Gold sucks
I'd assume it's even worse as a follow up to having seen Chris Reeve as Superman.
Snyder is such a terrible hack, it's hard to imagine liking the movie better when you see all the ways it failed not just as a movie (which you don't need to be familiar with Superman to see) but also as an attempt to be a Superman movie.
Your reactions are adorable. You should watch superman 2 the Richard donner cut, some scenes are more explained
Awesome! A Super Saturday with Addie & her crush. Love this movie ❤️💙💛
Superman 2 is the best classic superhero movie I enjoy watching it with you Addie
Superman 2 is the best sequel ever right up there with Spider-Man 2 can you do Richard donner cut of Superman 2
Such a fun one and it was great seeing you on this rollercoaster :)
Just think she’s closer to possibly watching Superman IV: Quest for Peace
I'm sorry, but it's still my favorite Superman movie.
Lex was the best in that film, since it released after Man of Steel #1 (2986) which introduced the more corporate CEO take on the character and that's something we see in Quest for Peace.
@joshuagideon7215
I have no idea what you mean. There was only 2 movies and no more after lol.
@@LittleGalaxyBoy It's actually very funny that he really only cares about Real Estate in these first two films. It makes him sound like Trump, who was undoubtably an influence on Man of Steel #1. (Just as a fixture of the 80's billionaire culture.)
Oh hell no. Skip 3 and 4, move on to Superman Returns.
Superman II is one of my favorite movie sequels. It is excellent!!
You should watch THE RICHARD DONNER CUT of Superman II, as it shows original alternate deleted and extended scenes, because it was intended to be Richard Donner's version, until he was fired by the Salkinds.
It ties in more closely with the end of the first movie.
Hell no, the ending in the Donner version is way worse
I'm an artist now and a collector of pop culture items. I'm happy to actually own the President Lincoln Mount Rushmore prop used in this film. It's about 4 feet tall, and it's made of styrofoam with all of the crumbled bits glued back to together.
Pity Ursa was a villain.
I'm sure that's BS. Superman can love Lois if he wants. He just can't **** her.
As “long” as he’s a six incher he’s good.
I remember reading that a long time ago. It was hilarious! Remember, he is the Man Of Steel. That includes his bodily, umm, emissions! Without getting too graphic here on RUclips let's just say "fun time" with Lois would end with her being blown apart literally from the inside out! 😂
Addie Superman returns (2006) is the direct sequel to this movie Superman II. You have to watch that one next!
