Red Dwarf is a cult classic and my favourite series!
**Spolier Alert** The characters are as follows:
Rimmer, Arnold J. - 2nd Technician, killed in a radiation accident, now resurected as a hologram (hence, the 'H')
Lister, David - the last human alive, originally put into suspended animation for an illegal pet cat
'Cat' - a creature which evolved from the cat Lister brought aboard Red Dwarf
    Kryten - a sanitation Mechanoid

The "H" on the forehead means he's a hologram. In the red dwarf universe it is possible and kind of common for a deceased person to be brought back as a hologram with the personality and all the memories they had before death. Later Rimmer gets upgradded to "Hard Light" which means he can phisicly interact with objects and people, which he couldnt before, basicly like a movie projection, things coild pass right through.

It's sort of the premise of the entire show too. Lister is meant to be the only known human left, 3 million years in the future. As a Welshman I can confirm every Welsh person is proud of being so, we love our heritage, our flag (I mean who wouldn’t like their national flag to be a dragon!) and especially our national anthem. King Boomer I would recommend watching the Welsh national anthem when Wales faced off against England in Rugby on 16th March 2013 - the passion in that video speaks for itself. I think for that reason we don’t mind having some fun poked at us 😊 all the UK nations poke fun at each other but we mean it in good spirits

You can't have heard the radio phone-in where several Welsh people argued that Snowdon should stay Snowdon instead of Yr Wyddfa because "that's how it's always been called". Seemed a distinct lack of pride in their language there, even when the hosts pointed out it's not always been called that, and Snowdon is the English name.
Now, I'm English living in Scotland, so I should support the English name, but those people were wrong. It should have its original name, even if it's harder to pronounce.

Season 1, Episode 1 is "The End", Episode 6 "The Beginning" that should clue you in a bit. There's time loops, an adaptive moon that terraform based on your mood, a virus that gives you luck... Always an interesting premise with lots of room for fun in it.

As per standard with the majority of Brit and Irish comedies, Red Dwarf starts off slow and with a low budget (until Season 2). The positive is that there's only 6 episodes of Season 1 to get through before the good stuff, and to be fair Season 1 still has some very funny moments. The American RUclipsr, Josh from 'After Work Reactions' recently reacted to the entire thing, and he's now a bonafide fan. Story is
Lister went on a pub crawl on earth and woke up on a moon of saturn with no means of getting back to earth. SO he formulated a plan
Which was to sign up to the crew of deep space mining vessel BUT commit some crime - so instead of doing the 5 year long trip do something that would get him punished by being locked in Stasis chamber without pay. That way he would get back to earth without any of his time passing, though he'd still be broke... On the outward bound journey at the last port of call after working some time onboard he brought a cat on board (he made sure it was disease free) which was taboo - but when caught wouldn't give it up. So he was put in stasis. He released his cat in some deep deep cargo hold or something so it wouldn't be caught and euthenised. Some time later the ships reactor leaks and kills all on board aprt fromthe cats (it was pregnant) in the hold and Lister in the shielded stasis chamber. The ships computer takes action and fires the ship into the deepest uncharted regions of space for thousands / millions of years until radiation levels are safe to release Lister from stasis. Once released Lister has no purpose - all he ship mates the woman he loved etc all dust....He wanders unwashed and uncaring about the ship abject and alone when he hears what's happened. The ships computer sees this and has the ability to generate one hologram of a crew member - so it generates RIMMER (hence the "H" on his head) not because he was a friend of lister's but because they were co-workers in the lowest rank of maintenance & cleaning and Lister couldn't stand him and one of his main sources of inspiration was to jibe Rimmer. Rimmer has a Napoleon complex (due to his upbringing in a hosuehold with massively talented siblings and military parents that were ashamed & disappointed that he was unable to live up to their expectations) Rimmer is unintelligent, untalented , unimaginative, cowardly, selfish but at the same time aspires to be a leader and hero and thinks he really should be in charge and has convinced himself he is intelligent , talented , brave etc. (in fact the opposites of his real character) but fails to prove it at every turn. (Later on his alter ego "Ace" Rimmer turns up and is all the things Rimmer aspires to be and Rimmer obv hates him!).... So Lister now has purpose and the battle of wills / wits commences as they try to somehow pilot the ship back home, they have no idea how to though... nor does the ships computer as it's got silicon alzheimers...!
(btw it seems like Rimmer was the cause of the reactor going boom through his incompetence combined with his massively misplaced confidence in his own ability..)
During the radiation escape the cats, safe in the shielded hold, have evolved into humanoid cat creatures - eventually leaving the ship going off to found separate societies on different planets etc..after a disagreement about religion... all except "Cat". The creature "cat" retains the selfish, user , cruel , ego centered , sex obsessed and vain characteristics of the feline.... hence Cat's obsession with fashion, food , sex and getting whatever he wants.
The Android Kryten (as in "the admirable Crighton") is a later addition found on a crashed space ship - it is basically a servant - But lister tries to break it's programming and make it have free will and become more human.

Fave story is DJJ turned up for his audition to be the Cat an hour late (he did not know this) wearing a relatives old Zoot Suit and was totally unapologetic (of course did not know they had been waiting) the people casting thought he was already being in character as the DNGAF Cat and pretty much hired him on the spot. Still not sure where he got that accent from? Craig Charles was initially brought in to look at the cat character and check it was PC as they did not want any allegations of racism (very progressive for 1988) but saw the Dave Lister character and instantly knew it fitted him like a glove. So two Manc writers hired a scouser to be the last human in the galaxy!

This ran for TWELVE series (or was it thirteen) plus a couple of 'specials'. It was and still is one of the most loved comedy shows ever in the UK.
But if you're going to watch it, start at the beginning because like Dr Who before it, it matured over time. I know every episode of every series almost word-for-word and I still chuckle to myself simply at a random memory popping into my head.

Arnold Rimmer ( the one with the ‘H’ on his forehead) is a hologram of a dead crewman. The one in the pink Jacket is cat. He evolved from the ships cat over 3 million years. Kryton is a domestic android designed to generally for cleaning duties and Lister is the only surviving human on the mining ship Red dwarf after a catastrophic accident 3 million years before which wiped out the entire crew. Lister was in the prison in suspended animation for violation of some law (which I can’t remember now ).

The Cat (from left) has fangs because he’s descended from cats in the same way that we’re descended from apes. Red Dwarf is great as full episodes, but if I were to recommend clips on RUclips, I would recommend “Rimmer and Cat Inquisition”, “Rimmer’s Gone Wrong” and “The Trial” (of Rimmer).
