Alright-folks are up in arms about the Red Dwarf episode we picked to react to today. To do the show justice, then, please provide a RUclips link to a more appropriate episode for us to react to. The link should not be from the RUclips channel that owns the rights to the TV show. The comment with a RUclips link to a non-copyright sensitive Red Dwarf episode that gets the most likes will be the one we react to next.
    Ready, steady, GO!

Ace isnt meant to be a parady of an American hero - the character is a throwback to British raf pilots of the 2nd world war ... hence aces catchphrase " smoked me a kipper , I'll be back for breakfast" something a pilot of the time might have said just before flying out of england for a night time bombing raid over Germany circa 1940. No American allusion at all.

Yeah, not the best episode to start your Red Dwarf adventure. You should start from the beginning to get the full story (& context). Thankfully, I did see the very first pilot episode when it was first aired on UK terrestrial television, & i was interested in it immediately, even though the story started off slowly, I could tell it had promise, but never imagined it would be as popular as it is now. It has a cult following, & I'd say it's one of our quirkiest national treasures 😏

I would always suggest starting with season 1 episode 1 called "The End" as it sets the stage for what is to come, it is definitely not a star trek parody even Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard ) thought it was but sat and watched it and realised it is far from it. Sadly the episode you had has returning character that people who watched the show know of and how he interacts with the crew. Hope this helps

you want a classic red dwarf episode so that you understand the context. watch one of these episodes...either psirens or better than life or kryten. You also need to know that rimmer is a hologram who is a pompous annoying coward, Cat has evolved over millions of years from the ships cat and like a cat is lazy, selfish and cares mostly for his own appearance. Dave lister is the last human being alive who is a bit of a slob who loves curry and annoying rimmer and is in love with Christine kochanski who died millions of years ago, when he was frozen in stasis. kryton is a droid they picked up on their travels who loves to serve so much that he sacrifices his whole life to do so. If you watch the first episode it will give you the background information you need. Red Dwarf is a huge hit with over 10 series for a reason...it is genius

  • @babalonkie

You did miss a lot of context and story as the series are all connected (It's now on series 12/13 and this was series 7). Chris Barry plays Ace Rimmer and Arnold Rimmer. Arnold Rimmer is supposed to be the polar opposite of Ace Rimmer (As seen throughout the earlier series. Ace is supposed to be this heroic selfless man), but in this episode... Arnold faces his cowardice and Becomes Ace Rimmer and has a very touching and dramatic ending where Arnold Rimmer is no more (He had been in over 60 episodes and from the start of Red Dwarf).
    We "Dwarfer's" love this episode.
It's a long series and was one of the most successful Series on BBC. It went from mini models and cardboard props to full CGI. Red Dwarf was never given a high budget asthe creators and fans really wanted a film of it, BBC knew if they gave it tons of funding they would lose it's hold on the series. It was so successful that America tried to make a American version, but the pilot episode did not feature British quick wit and it never succeeded. You can find the American pilot on the internet (It was on RUclips).
It was the first Comedy Sci-Fi Series to ever be successful.
    PS: Happy Halloween :)

You should have had some context before watching this episode. Red Dwarf explained: The Titular "Red Dwarf" is the name of a mining ship, 5x3 miles in measurement, travelling between Jupiter and Earth, mining raw minerals from Jupiters moons, during the 22nd Century. On board ship are Dave Lister and Arnold Rimmer, they are vending machine technicians and the lowest rank on the ship. Lister is a complete bum and slob who drifts through life, while Rimmer has dreams of becoming an officer, but constantly fails his exams and thus has become a neurotic mess.
Lister has smuggled a cat on board ship, when he is caught he's given the choice of turning the Cat over to science research or going into stasis for the rest of the trip and forfeiting his wages. He chooses the latter. During this time Rimmer does a bad job of repairing Drive Plates, causing the ship to be flooded with lethal radiation and wiping out the crew. The ships computer Holly takes the ship into deep space for the next 3 million years until the radiation clears and Lister can be safely released. Rimmer is resurrected as a Hologram "H" to keep Lister company.
They also learn that during the previous three Million years Listers cat has bred and multiplied, and evolved into a humanoid race making Lister their God and basing their concept of the promised land on Lister's ambition to open a Donut diner on Fiji. They perform a mass exodus from Red Dwarf to search for the promised land of "Fushal" using Listers Laundry List as a star chart. Leaving behind the Sick and Lame Cats, two of whom give birth to "Cat" who encounters Lister and Rimmer just after he comes out of stasis.
Later on they encounter a Derelict spaceship where the android Kryten is the only surviving crew member and he joins them.
In a series four Episode "Dimension Jump" they encounter "Ace" Rimmer, an alternative version of Rimmer from another Dimension, who is the complete opposite of the main Rimmer. Just because he was held back a year in school. The episode you watched here is a sequel to that episode.
I'd recommend trying Red Dwarf again, but going from the start. There are twelve series of roughly six episodes each so far and series thirteen is in pre production

    • @lwaves
      @lwaves 6 лет назад +7

+Panthy85 They've stated their thinking behind using clips before and it's something like this, if I've got it right.
Their logic is that you don't read a book before you buy it, you read small parts of it and make a decision based on that. So why not do that with TV.
The problem with applying that to a long running TV series is that they are doing the equivalent of taking (for example) the Harry Potter books and reading a few lines from each book. Or in this case, one random page from one book. It has no context and can never have the same impact, like with this clip where they have no idea who any of the characters are, especially Ace Rimmer.
IMO, they'd be much better off watching the pilot to a show and then maybe some later clips but it's their choice.

To explain what you just watched....Red Dwarf is the story of a man, David Lister. A hologram, Arnold Rimmer. A cat who has evolved into a human/cat called...Cat. A mechanoid known as Kryten. A ships computer called Holly (not in the episode you watched).
Red Dwarf is a beat up old mining ship that is owned by the Jupiter Mining Corporation. At the start of the series, we meet David Lister (3rd Technician) and his barely superior Arnold J Rimmer (second technician). They work as Chicken soap machine technicians. Basically, they are the lowest of the low, dislike each other and also have to share a bunkroom. Think of the odd couple.
Lister is a slob. Rimmer is an analy retentive, obnoxious, uptight man with delusions of grandeur and a fixation with becoming an officer. Something he will never achieve because he keeps failing the exams.
During his time on the ship Lister smuggles aboard a cat, something that is illegal as it could spread disease amongst the crew. When the cat is discovered, largely due to Lister taking a photo of himself and the cat and having it processed in the ships photo lab, Lister is sentenced to three months of stasis. During which he will be frozen in time.
Lister emerges from Stasis thinking that he has only just got in and wonders around the ship noticing that there seems to be nobody around. Holly then tells Lister that all the crew are dead, they were wiped out by a lethal radiation leak and that Lister has been in stasis for a very, very long time.
Holly, in his current state, has gone quite senile and decides that the best person to keep Lister sane is his old bunkmate Arnold Rimmer. He brings Rimmer back as a hologram, a process so taxing that the ship can only sustain one at a time.
While Lister was in Stasis and radiation swept through the ship his cat, who was pregnant, was safely sealed in the cargo decks. Over the years the numbers of cats there increased rapidly and they started to evolve into Felix Sapiens. A human type cat.
After Lister and Rimmer met the Cat Lister decides that Red Dwarf should turn around and head back to Earth.
Along their trip back home an awful lot of things happen to them. They met Hitler, Jesus, winnie the pooh and Elvis. They meet more than their fair share of people who want to kill them. Get turned in robots. They even encounter a monster made of curry...
At its peak, Red Dwarf won many awards including an emmy for best international comedy. It was also the highest rated comedy on BBC pulling in over 8 million viewers. It is still made to this day and is shown on Dave. A thirteenth series is due to start filming sometime next year.

Red dwarf is a story spanning 2 decades (3 decades if you include the recent revival). By season 4 most of the jokes were callbacks to previous episodes so if you didn't start watching from the beginning, a lot of the humour would be lost on you. This is common to a lot of british comedies, some of which you've done reaction videos for already. It's one of the major differences between US and UK comedies. For doing reaction videos, if you want to get the jokes it's best to do them on earlier seasons. You should def do a reaction to Bottom as it's hilarious no matter what episode you are watching. (probably best not to do that one with the kids nearby though)

The main Rimmer (with the H on his head) was a hologram of a dead crew member to keep the only human in the universe (Lister, who was playing the Knight jousting VR thing) company. The cat is a descendant of Lister's pet cat 3 million years later (Lister was put in suspended animation as a punishment for smuggling the pet cat aboard). Something went wrong with the ship, and it took 3 million years for the radiation levels to drop before Lister could come out of suspended animation. The robot was found along the way.
Rimmer is an anally retentive jerk. Ace Rimmer is a mirror universe version of him that is everything our Rimmer isn't (brave, heroic, popular, beloved), so our Rimmer hates Ace.

Half the jokes in this episode won't make sense, since you haven't seen anything about Rimmer up to this point, so "Ace Rimmer" doesn't seem weird. The pilot episode (Season 1, episode 1) sets up the whole series, and would give you a better idea of what's going on.

It would probably have been better to start with the very first episode, despite not much continuity in the series, as it gives context and introduces the main characters. Series 7 is probably my least favourite.
The later series tend to play with the characters a bit more and as you say, not knowing the characters very well means many jokes are lost on you.

This is a great episode, but a horrible place for a new viewer to start as you don't know any of the characters. S1Ep1: "The End" would have been best. And then, if you so desired, one of the best season three episodes to get a chance to see Kryten (The robot) after he joined the crew. "Polymorph" would be a fun choice for a second episode to see with the standard crew of four that continues through the rest of the series.

Lister is the only human, he had been in STATIS (suspended animation) for three million years, in that time the ships cat's descendants had evolved into a human like animal 'The Cat'.(orange suit). Arnold Rimmer is a hologram of himself, hence the H on his forehead and was Listers room mate and colleague among the original crew. Kryten is a robot they found and there is also a ships computer Holly (who we didn't see in the clip) originally a man later changed into a woman, both had a seemingly couldn't give a monkey's attitude to their welfare and spoke in a very droll and sarcastic manner.
Lister is the only Human left in the universe as far as they can tell, Earth no longer exists and they are travelling aimlessly in space. 'Red Dwarf' is the name of the space ship. You really should go watch the pilot episode.
The actor playing the robot Kryten is actually British actor Robert Llewellyn and the two Rimmers are played by the same actor Chris Barrie and no 'Ace Rimmer' is not speaking in an Australian accent but an English one.

I've got to be honest, you guys kind of ruin pretty much every American reacts video by picking random context-less clips deep into long running series. It's no wonder you're baffled! You'll have zero context doing this and it shows with your responses. Why not just watch the first episode of the first season for the next thing you watch as I'm sure this will set the scene better. Also Red dwarf has no connection to american TV, you kept on trying to connect the two? It's no relation to star trek other than it's set in space, and no one is mimicking American culture in it are they? Red Dwarf really is it's own thing.

It's a great great comedy and clever also as they use space and time theory but you have to watch from the start and get in to the characters. It's impossible in a short viewing. I'm definitely a Dwarfer. The show is still going. There was a feature length episode in 2020 with possibly another one on the drawing board.
For newbies I'd at least watch The End, Waiting for God and Future Echoes from Series 1, Kryten and Parallel Universe from Series 2, Marooned and Polymorph from series 3 and Dimension Jump from Series 4 and Back to Reality from Series 5.
That would give you a good grounding in the characters and side characters in the show.

  • @davidpnewton

Unfortunately you chose one of the weaker episodes to watch. As others have said this particular episode is extremely in-joke and reference heavy.
If I had to make a recommendation for an introductory episode it would be Backwards. Nowhere near as many in-jokes but the classic quartet of Lister, Rimmer, Cat and Kryten are all there. Take the characters, send them into a parallel universe where time runs backwards and see what happens. It has classic scenes like the un-rumble where they have a tidying up bar fight and one of the best expression-based jokes of all time when Cat has to go and finds out what happens when you do that with time running backwards. Most of the episode takes place in the large city of Nodnol.

Eh, I wouldn't worry about the criticism. Red Dwarf was never really all that funny and was quite cringey at times. However, it's actually surprising how much dramatic merit it has for the type of show it is. You get quite attached to the characters, and some of the episode setups are quite enthralling, which is why watching one episode probably won't work.
That said, nerds of a certain age will defend this show to the death, for whatever reason.

I think it's difficult to jump into a series like Red Dwarf. It's a classic programme though. The Cat as Duane Dibbley was the work of genius. Like a lot of series it improved with each series until about series 6 which was when it was starting to go downhill. Series 3 - 5 were probably the best but you've got to start at the start to understand it. It's very British though so maybe wouldn't appeal even if you started at the beginning.

Comedy, like all art forms, is subjective. This might not be your cup of tea, regardless.
That said, it's one of the best UK sitcoms of all time. It's like the cynical alternative to Star Trek written as a farce.
I doubt you'd really 'get' Star Trek watching a random episode wondering "who's that" and "what's happening". While each episode is mostly standalone it does have relationships and lore. Since it's largely character-driven, falling in love with the characters and setting over time is what make this work. It's higher investment, higher reward. Like chess, it's a little difficult to get into but you get a lot of depth out of it.
