Trivia: Before the final scene was filmed, CP Grogan (Kochanski's actress) was accidentally told she had finished her scenes and left the studio, so the Kochanski who walks in with the future Lister is actually Dona DiStefano, an Assistant Floor Manager (in a very big hat).
Clare Grogan was never at the studio, all her scenes were filmed on location and since Kochanski had no lines n the final scene they forgot to call her to the studio.
This episode always makes me consider that Captain Hollister is a pretty good boss. He frequently personally deals with Lister and Rimmer's messing about, and even after Rimmer is horrifically rude he still comes to apologise. Another facet of Rimmer's worst enemy being himself.
Didn't Rimmer say he assaulted the captain by shoving a pencil up his nose? As well as ripping up and eating his wife's photograph?... Never mind coming back to apologise, I'm surprised Hollister didn't have Rimmer arrested and put into stasis awaiting criminal charges!
Trivia: It might come as a surprise to you, but most of the main cast were not actors before Red Dwarf. Chris Barrie (Rimmer) was an impressionist. Craig Charles (Lister) was a performance poet. Danny John-Jules (Cat) had had a couple of tiny bit parts, but was primarily a dancer. Norman Lovett (Holly) was a stand-up comedian. Most interestingly, Craig Charles only got into it because he was asked by (I think) producer Ed Bye to judge whether he thought the character of Cat was straying too far into a racial stereotype, with his jive talk and James Brown moves. Craig Charles was the one to ask because his poetry was usually highly charged with anger about discrimination, which he experienced as a half Black, half Irish man growing up in Liverpool where signs outside shops reading "No Blacks, No Irish" were not yet uncommon. Craig didn't see any problem with the character of Cat, but asked if he could play the part of Lister, despite not being an actor. Many people were auditioned for the roles of the main cast. Ultimately the best chemistry was between Craig and Chris, important as the interaction between their characters was always intended to be the core of the show. I've even heard that at one point, Chris was considered for the role of Lister, and Craig for the role Rimmer. Someone will correct me if that isn't true. I hope you find that interesting. 😊
Chris Barrie actually played the Lister character in the original radio series. I'm not sure if he actually auditioned for Lister in the TV series, but they did consider just keeping him in the role.
@@person.probably Dave Hollins: Space Cadet! A recurring bit from the radio sketch comedy series "Son of Cliche". So Chris Barrie was very much an actor before Red Dwarf, and if anyone is a fan of him, then I'd recommend tracking down some old episodes of that show.
The one thing people either forget or dont realize.. is just how HUGE Red Dwarf is (5 miles long), the ship that is (although it often cant pin its size down lol)... Kryten went off for a bit, but you could spend weeks wandering around the ship and not bump into others all that often.
Great episode, one where 'early Cat' really shines, including one of my favourite quotes of his: ""If he's you and you're him, and you're him and he's him, am I still me? Who's eating this chicken?"- never fails to make me chuckle.
just an FYI, Kryten left the ship at the end of episode one- it's not really clear at the end of the episode (because some of the ending was cut), but it is brought up at another point in the series
The ending wasn't cut, that was just how the episode originally ended. For the '97 remastered version they added the extra shot of Kryten riding away on the space bike. They added some other short scenes here and there later on, too, such as a CG air duct sequence at the start of Polymorph. (Only series 1-3 got remastered.)
2:40 - Quite correct. In modern moral terms, giving someone hallucinogens without their consent is a big no-no, and rightly so. Mitigating that in terms of it being a fictitious comedic narrative of its time is that Lister clearly intended to be present throughout, and as such would never have allowed Rimmer to come to any actual harm.
The original wibbley wobbley timey whimey!!! HAHAHA!!!! I loved this episode! It was good seeing Lister and Kochanski together, and even the future future Rimmer seems happier (with the dashing mustache)! The last 2 episodes are also fantastic, these reactions bring me into a happy space!!
12:48 Although you know by now, the answer (for any comment readers) is that you come into this with foreknowledge of a character called Kryten being in the show. If you watched it "live" he was just another one-shot character to be forgotten. That's the trouble with watching old stuff. It's hard not to get spoiled at all, whether it's DVD covers or over-keen fanboys spewing comments. Like this one :D
Genre slash stuff like this has such a fine line to walk. In order for it to work both elements (in this case, sci-fi & comedy) have to be top notch or it falls apart. This show consistently hits the mark in this regard. The setup is great sci-fi, every episode is a solid sci-fi concept & the comedy is so perfectly suited to each character. The fact you seem to be really enjoying the early episodes bodes very well, the next four seasons are immaculate.
I remember reading the reasoning for introducing Kryten was to have another character who could interact with things besides Lister. Up until that point only a Lister could pick things up, because its already been established that Rimmer can’t, whilst Cat can’t be bothered to pick things up 😂
The "Ganymede Holiday Inn" hotel in this episode is The Midland in Manchester. I think they've re-done the lobby now, but it looked exactly like this back in the day.
These reactions are really fun. Red dwarf is one of my favourite high concept comedies. Most peoples say season 3-6 are the best but I love them all, warts and all.
I understand your mild frustration over Kryten's absence. I feel it too, more pronounced however, because I've seen the series in it's entirety, and some of my favorite moments are Kryten moments. Looking forward to your reactions when he enters the picture again.
My family loves to use that "What is it?" quote from the Cat all the time! To think you'll finish this series by next week. I cannot wait! You two will be quite impressed at what comes your way!
I liked the part where they exit the elevator and the holo attendant says "We apologize for any inconvenience". And the Cat replies "You should apologize for the chicken, it's the first meal I had where the container tastes better".
It's a tiny point but I love the way the captain says "two weeks PD" - obviously we find out in the next scene it means painting the smegging ship, but we never find out if this is Painting Detachment, or Detention, or Duty, it's a nice touch that makes the scene more realistic without needing to explain every little detail.
This is an episode that I remember making me fall in love with the show. Just the cat going, What IS it?? I’m so glad you’re both enjoying this. It just gets crazier.
Tragedy or comedy, it's all about perspective. I would LOVE seeing people I loved and lost not just alive, but LIVING! You can just appreciate what you took for granted. Even if it's a short time, you create new memories you never thought you'd get.
These last two episodes have been really cool to see you both watch, as someone who watched it from a young age I can't even remember how I reacted to Thanks For the Memory and Stasis Leak's plot reveals when I first watched them, so getting to see someone react to these episodes for their first time has been great!
Trivia: Petersen (Lister's friend who he kisses) is played by Mark Williams, who was Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films, and currently stars on TV as the crime-solving priest, Father Brown.
Krytan was originally ment to be the final episode of season 2 But the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) messed up the air order and ran Krytan first. So because that was the original air date it's remained that way ever since With some extra added subtext that Krytan took a starbug to "find himself"
Clare Grogan (who plays Kristine Kochanski) also sings the end credits song. She was the lead singer of the 1980's group "Altered Images". She was also in the 1981 film "Gregory's Girl" (which is well worth a look in).
So, you've watched this in the past. So, the question is, what are you now. in your fourties, or your million and fourties, or are you observing us from a parallel universe able to pick out what moments you want to observe? Edit: Sorry for the multiple edits, but I'm onto my tenth pint.
it's like I said back at the start of this trip we're on, it has the creativeness of a TNG episode except it's bonkers. now you're starting to really get how bonkers it can be. welcome aboard Red Dwarf.
Morwenna Banks was the lift lady, she's the voice of Peppa Pig's Mum nowadays but she used to do a brilliant comedy character of a little girl explaining how things worked back in the 80's ruclips.net/video/1ayln4-WV2A/видео.html
You two said it last episode, and all would agree; the reason Red Dwarf is so good, is in spite of it being a sitcom, they get the sci-fi right. Both in premises, and technobabble. I'd easily stack Red Dwarf's world building against Trek's.
They guy playing Catering Officer Olaf Peterson you might recognize. He plays Rory's father in Doctor Who, and a the titular character in Father Brown :)
I love it when the writers mess with your minds on this show. I was expecting you to say, now we know who the mother is of Lister's 2 babies. British TV used get a little cheeky now and then. 😉
If you gals love Red Dwarf, you should definitely consider watching the old Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV series. It has the same sort of surrealist sci-fi ideas and sense of alienation, combined with brilliant writing too.
Thanks for reminding me how good of a show this is. KQED pbs used to play the show on sunday nights and i found it early. I was as fascinated as you all seem. So preposterous yet subtlety deep. Oh, and about Kryton............
Gals, You've probably seen that lift woman BEFORE (or Afore from her perspective)! That's the Other Realm Rule Bearer with the Bubble pipe from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Great videos! Glad you're enjoying this classic show... but what I'd like to know is where I can hear the full Gallifrey Gals theme song. It's awesome!
Hi Gals...., So Kryten was a Series 2 Episode , single Ep ' Guest character' - He was so popular that Series Writers made him an Official Member of the Crew in Series 3 !! :)
Without giving too much away, Yes/No on adding Kryten full time was the first major creative disagreement Grant & Naylor had on which direction to take the show, and it's a while before that's finally settled. As for this episode, the wedding photograph slightly changes over the course of the episode. The second time Lister looks at it, when he no longer believes he's the groom, the Lister in the photograph is no longer smiling. Little hint that causality is in flux the more they mess around in the past.
Kryton will be back season 3 episode 1 but different to what you have seen. You are getting close to meeting the alternate rimmer, cat and lister :) What happens to Lister explains the season 1 episode called Future Echos . nuff said as i dont want to spoil it.

Patience is a virtue gals , Kryten will turn up - eventually .Cat certainly had the best one liners in this and a good idea about the stasis leak . It's good that Lister can have hope for the future . Enjoyed your reactions to this one , you never know what's next with Red Dwarf .
Clare Grogan was on most teenage boys bedroom walls at the time as a popular singer. So that added to the improbable chance Lister actually managed this.
Any time that anyone says "it's cold outside" in our house, it inspires a burst of Red Dwarf theme song singing. There's no kind of atmosphere I'm all alone, more or less Let me fly far away from here Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun
I learned something new today!
Interesting
That came up in Universe Challenge on RD night
Clare Grogan was never at the studio, all her scenes were filmed on location and since Kochanski had no lines n the final scene they forgot to call her to the studio.
Always thought it wasn't CPG - thanks for confirming.
Its a good evening in the UK watching the Gallifrey Gals watching Red Dwarf.
Our Rimmer: In 3 Million years youll be dead
Past Rimmer: oh will i really!?
Makes me laugh every time, such a great line
Yes unless you do something about it now
What do you suggest? Give up white bread more roughage?
The whole setup, with Rimmer then thinking the Captain was another hallucination... They were really on form with this episode.
Trivia: It might come as a surprise to you, but most of the main cast were not actors before Red Dwarf. Chris Barrie (Rimmer) was an impressionist. Craig Charles (Lister) was a performance poet. I've definitely heard that Chris auditioned for Lister... Not sure about the other way around.
Chris Barrie actually played the Lister character in the original radio series. I'm not sure if he actually auditioned for Lister in the TV series, but they did consider just keeping him in the role.
I had wondered if Danny John Jules role as Barrington in Maid Marrian came before red dwarf, but looks like red dwarf was first by a year.
The audiobooks are read by Chris, and he does a brilliant Lister voice!

I haven't watched these episodes for years, but just reading the titles brings back a lot of memories. 🙂
Smeggin’ yeah!
Thanks For the Memory indeed!
The one thing people either forget or dont realize.. is just how HUGE Red Dwarf is (5 miles long), the ship that is (although it often cant pin its size down lol)... Kryten went off for a bit, but you could spend weeks wandering around the ship and not bump into others all that often.
Trivia info: The Spandau Ballet song, TRUE, was written about Clare Grogan - the actress and pop star who plays Kochanski.
Oh - and CP Grogan was lead singer of her own band, too! Something I didn't know. :)
Altered Images I believe
Ah Clare Grogan... Gregory's Girl at an important stage of my life...
Great episode, one where 'early Cat' really shines, including one of my favourite quotes of his:

Paula’s suppressed giggling is so cute

Mitigating that in terms of it being a fictitious comedic narrative of its time is that Lister clearly intended to be present throughout, and as such would never have allowed Rimmer to come to any actual harm.
About halfway through I realized if you combined Paula and Kat's clothes you'd end up with a Lister cosplay outfit
Oh my gods, you're right lol
I was in the studio audience for this one. filmed at the BBC studio in Manchester UK. keep up the good work girls 😊
Thumbs up for Kat and Paula time traveling through the magic of television.

"Getting dWORFd"... what Councillor Troi once said 🤪
FYI, there is a text scroll at the start of S3E1 when you get there. I suggest you slow it down and read. It will set you up for what is ahead
"What is it?" is probably my favorite part. Lol

Soap *IS* organic though. "to make soap, first you must render fat".😂
1st rule of project mayhem

Kryten is very important to the chemistry of the show, but we aren't ready yet.
Shame about Hilly
They definitely aren't ready for Duane Dibbly!!!! 😉
@@skinheadjon901 I'm excited for them to meet Mister Flibble!😄
This is an episode that I remember making me fall in love with the show. Just the cat going, What IS it??
I’m so glad you’re both enjoying this. It just gets crazier.
My favourite episode. I suppose it's quite tragic getting a glimpse of the pre-accident crew 😢
My personal favourite too (although I love them all)
Tragedy or comedy, it's all about perspective. I would LOVE seeing people I loved and lost not just alive, but LIVING! You can just appreciate what you took for granted. Even if it's a short time, you create new memories you never thought you'd get.

Ahhh - and, perhaps, the **Gallifrey Gals** may also recognise Mark Williams as being Rory's dad.....! :)
From what I can find, I believe the moment Lister kisses Petersen is the first interracial same sex kiss on TV
What’s great is that now? I have an excuse to go back and watch Red Dwarf again so I can remember what it is. You girls are currently watching LOL
Glad you are getting through the episodes quickly as series three really steps up in quality
Krytan was originally ment to be the final episode of season 2
But the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) messed up the air order and ran Krytan first.
So because that was the original air date it's remained that way ever since
With some extra added subtext that Krytan took a starbug to "find himself"
The remastered version shows him on Lister's Space Bike and going into space through a air lock.
For the last 35 years until I saw the subtitles today, I thought Cat said "I want to do it loudly".
At the end of Kryten, he left to go off on his own as a biker
Clare Grogan (who plays Kristine Kochanski) also sings the end credits song. She was the lead singer of the 1980's group "Altered Images". She was also in the 1981 film "Gregory's Girl" (which is well worth a look in).
I love her so much, she was the quintessential 80s girl. It was hard NOT to have a crush on her.
Loving these Red Dwarf double bills!
So, you've watched this in the past. So, the question is, what are you now. in your fourties, or your million and fourties, or are you observing us from a parallel universe able to pick out what moments you want to observe?

I am loving the frequency of the Get Dwarfed episodes dropping! Always a lovely surprise! ❤️🚀
so excited seeing these! It's been a good couple weeks having these come out so often!
Yay Stasis Leak!
This was the first Red Dwarf I ever saw. I saw Queeg the following week, and have been a hardcore fan ever since.
Queeg is amazing!
Hoping for the next episode soon as I admit, I get withdrawal from waiting for them . I love these reactions and got me watching my DVD's again.
In case you missed it, crewman Peterson is also Arthur Weasley from the Harry Potter films.
Kryten borrowed Dave's space bike and flew away.
Statis Leak is one of the all time great episodes

“In 3 million years you’ll be dead.” - Something Rimmer actually says dead seriously to his past self.🤣

Yeh RD seldo. Makes sense but I'm loving your reactions to it because its a brilliant show.
Don`t worry, Kryten will return, become a regular, and end up being the funniest one of the bunch.
Brutal!! Loving the reactions, keep going!!
Another quality cat leak video!
Have heart Gallifrey Gals, Kryten comes back in Season 3!
Gals, You've probably seen that lift woman BEFORE (or Afore from her perspective)!

Kryten is out having adventures on his space-bike
Absolute classic episode. "In three million years you'll be dead!"
WILL I REALLY??
5:57 I saw that cut! 😉
What's a stasis leak Hol?
It's a leak, right, in stasis hence the name 'a stasis leak'.
I've been waiting for this one. I always loved this one, playing timey-wimey for comedy gold.
Without giving too much away, Yes/No on adding Kryten full time was the first major creative disagreement Grant & Naylor had on which direction to take the show, and it's a while before that's finally settled.

fantastic, nice and FREQUENT thats how i like it!
Don't over think it -Kryten was busy filming scrapheap challenge - or was that later. Who knows?
The next episode is my all time favourite
You guys should sing the closing song🙃¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Definitely, heck, even I still sing the ending song. It's so good.
Any time that anyone says "it's cold outside" in our house, it inspires a burst of Red Dwarf theme song singing.
There's no kind of atmosphere

Gallifrey Gals: Rory's Dad is so sweet.

The first time I watched this series (in 1990 I think) I wondered the same about where Kryten got to. Back then there was nobody to ask.
