I have an '09 Honda Shadow Aero and the shaft drive oil is the last thing I need to get done on it. I bought it this past December with around 22k miles and I don't know if the dealership actually changed it out or not. I suppose I can just check the level and coloring, but I'd rather just do it myself. Thanks for the video.

Hey mate! Do you by any chance know what is the name of that plastic ring part that goes between the final drive and the center of the wheel?
Mine is really loose, and I'm trying to figure out how to tighten up that piece. Everytime I go on a bad road, I can hear that "shaking" a lot

Not sure the part you're talking about but go to rockymountainatvmc.com and look up your bike and then the final drive photo. It will show it and you can order a new one if needed.

So based off this information if you wanted to check the level of the oil you’d wanna check it cold and make sure it’s pretty close to the fill bolt. I gotta leak somewhere and I’ve ruled out the oil cuz the levels hasn’t dropped. And it stains concrete but more like an oil and not the coolant. lol

@@TepcoCycleRepair any chance taking the old fluid out causes problems?
I know with some automatic transmission people will say if you wait to long after the interval don't even mess with it that the new fluid does more harm than good. Being I've seen 2 trannys rebuild shortly after fluid change this is a practice I now follow for tannsmissions. I don't see this being the same type of situation but thought I'd ask.

Thank you for the video, however, your procedure of the use of the side stand is incorrect for a 1984 Honda Shadow vt700c final drive gear fluid change per the "Clymer Honda Shadow service manual". Page 20 of the service manual indicates to place the bike on the "center stand", place a drain pan under the drain plug remove the old oil. On a 700cc model add approximately 130 CC or 4.4 oz of hypoid gear oil. The service manual states anywhere between 4.1 to 4.4 oz is acceptable level for a drain and fill condition. On an overhaul fluid replacement should be at 5.1 Oz for the service manual. I think draining on a side stand would be okay too gravity assist the removal of old hypoid oil, but just put it on the center stand and add 4.1 to 4.4 oz on a normal drain and fill.

I did it as per the OEM factory Honda service manual. I show a picture of the manual at 1:43 read it from the top which explains how to check the level. I have the bike leaned the same as on the side stand. I don't trust clymer manuals, they have posted several mistakes (not that OEM manuals never do but I trust them more)

@@TepcoCycleRepair Sorry & again this is not the correct procedure for the service manual. I don't like false information in the internet. I am not going to go by your instructions but the service manual was composed by the engineers themselves - you're incorrect, unless you want to dispute that with the people that made the service manual publication!?

@@stephenpatrick8068 You're going by clymer I'm going by the OEM manual. The only difference is draining on the side stand or the center stand? Is that the issue you're calling false information? If you don't get all the fluid out, and put in what the clymer manual says you'll be over filled. I posted a picture of the OEM manual for the fill procedure and level check, this is how Honda says to do it. If you are trying to call me out for false info, please use the OEM manual not an aftermarket manual.

@@TepcoCycleRepair I am an IT engineer by trade. I enjoy mechanics, I work for a Fortune 100 company now and I found interest in your video and publication, that's why I responded. Assessing your way or what you call the ”Honda OEM service manual” way, which I've never heard of, as Honda was for manufacturing not for publication, Haynes and Clymer we're the only companies that created service manuals back in that time from what I recall, to me, it makes more common sense leveling it out at the rear instead of tilting it that final degree on the side stand for refill purposes. I believe if you fill using the center stand on a level horizontal plane, to the lip of the fill port should be satisfactory & makes the most engineering common sense. Putting it out to exactly 4.1 - 4.4 oz per the manual, pre overhaul, is there use of a reference point range in the manual as fluid volume is a major concern in this compressed area. I just don't want anyone to ruin their bike by doing anything incorrectly, that's why I'm challenging you & I'm sorry you're getting defensive, but I will stick with what I feel is right! I am more than willing to take a pictures of my publication, the copyright information/the page information & send it to you if interested. The internet is good for tutorial purposes, but a copyright manual can be held up in court & can be sued if incorrect!

If you fill the rear with fluid to the threads when the bike is on the center stand, you will be over filled! I'm taking offense because you're calling my information false and quoting an aftermarket manual when my info is from the manufacturers service manual. The fact that you are not aware that Honda made a service manual for the bike is concerning. Haynes and Clymer are aftermarket and are known for publishing mistakes, or generic information not specific for the model. The info you are stating is incorrect. The factory Honda manual clearly says. And I posted a picture of it in the video.
"Place the motorcycle on its side stand on a level surface. Remove the oil filler cap from the final gear case. Check that the oil level is up to the lower edge of the oil fill hole"
