Dude, that's the best description of the difference between a dual and single pin crank I've seen. 👍 My Fury 1300 and my wife's 2002 Spirit 750 are single pin cranks but Honda is smart enough to balance them. They sound good, but they don't shake-rattle-and... fall the fk apart.
Never thought of that, before. Interesting point. I'd always set the idle at recommended and never tried to get the lowest idle possible, but I knew a few guys who did. I wonder how their engines got on.
Absolute unit of a machine! Clocked in 100 k. and runs like a champ 🔥 Never gets tired, always gets you to point B. Legend says it will run on pirate rum and jar type moonshine
Similar for Harley’s, too. Too many riders turn the idle down so much that the oil pumps pressure is too low to move oil around. Plus, when idles are too low, don’t forget the engine needs to get up to enuf power to get going with your buds. The engine speed needed to even let the clutch out needs to get up way over the potato idle. My big twin idle is recommended at 950-1000 rpm from a fully hottened up engine. I will take it for a half hour toot and then adjust my idle as needed to set it.
The same lack of oil to the "top" [heads at the same elevation as the crank] end happens with the old BMW airheads. There used to be a strange fetish among airhead owners to get the idle as low as possible. Because of the opposed cylinders and a heavy flywheel they would still run pretty smoothly at 800 rpm. At that slow rate, oil pressure was low and the big oil users like bearings used all the pressure before any oil could get to the "top" end or the timing chain. Mysterious valve train and timing chain damage happened. So the low idle problem is more about crank and cam bearings using all the oil rather than, as in the case of the Shadow, the heads being way above the oil pump. [Elevation seems to really make no difference; it's all about oil volume]. Nice video, Hoss!
I bought my vlx from a dealer and I believe I need a jet kit because my ideal is super high and I got different pipes and intake , I think the deal did this to the carb to get it running nice . You're videos and website have been a great help

Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
I have been collecting 1975-87 Honda GoldWings for last several years. One of them has Weber 40’s which I should have gotten a pair of Dellorto 36”…. I bought Shadow Seat from Crazylist I think it looks good on my GW.
Hey gotta question for you I've got a 2001 honda shadow spirit vt750dc I need 45 inch throttle cables push &pull throttle do you guys got cables for me and how much
Got a VTX1300, what would cause a slow, to no crank when hot? Seems like the starter can't turn over. I have a new proper CCA battery, starter solenoid and the previous owner put in a new starter. When cold, turns over with no problems, get it warmed up, and you might get one turn before the starter doesn't turn, clicks and seems to be locked up. I have checked the ground cable, the power cables to the starter, and solenoid for good connection and resistance all checked good. The bike has 21k 2004, Cobra pipes, a jet kit with the side scoop... as far as I know, all factory upgrades.

Good video. Thank you! Can you answer one question I have - as Honda guy - I have 2008 vt750 with injection. Does it have something like an mass air flow sensor to detect the air volume it gets and mixes the gas accordingly to get the perfect air fuel mixture? Im planning to change out air filter to a more open one - can I do that without messing up the AFR?
I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit. How do i know if it is a single or double pin crank? My owners and service manual says idle speed shoul be 1,000 +/- 100 RPM. But i did buy the same tach and set my idle up to 1,200 for now
Hey TJ, when your using that tach/hour meter and the bike is dual carbed. Do you have to test each ignition wire or doesn't matter which ignition wire it's placed on to set the idle.
I have a 2001 1100 Shadow Aero. The air cleaner is under the seat so the seat is specifically designed for the bike. This means I can’t get a Mustang seat with backrest. You can for a 750 but not an 1100. Any suggestions?

HONDA. by far. more fun, less to worry about. they say you find freedom on a harley.... you find financial ruin and stress about what might break next HAHAH! in all seriousness im glad that so many options exist because iof it was all the same the world would be boring as F. my personal preference is still the hondas.
Very cool. Will be watching your videos in the future considering I just bought my dad's 2004 Honda Shadow 750 American Classic Edition. Can't wait to ride.
Knees in the breeze!!
Don't have a Shadow, but this video made me really interested in having proper idle speed for shadows. By the way , when going up the rev range from 900 to 1200 the sound changes significantly, can the sound itself be used to tune the idle speed?
if youve done it for 17 years, you can kinda get close, but even I prefer to use a tool to get it right.
I own a 07 Shadow Spirit 750. I'm gunna get a hold of a couples brothers here in town and get me a tachometer today just to go for a ride and look like a smartass! Thank you, keep up the great content and ride safe
Hearts and Farts
Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
I have been collecting 1975-87 Honda GoldWings for last several years. One of them has Weber 40’s which I should have gotten a pair of Dellorto 36”…. I bought Shadow Seat from Crazylist I think it looks good on my GW.
🍻🍻🍻
I have 03 shadow vt600 can it be lowered? Also it's a bobber can shocks still be installed on the bike.
Thank you
we have a video on lowering, but it removes the stock shock.
I recently aquired a virago 750, does the same apply i wonder.? Great video by the way, you saved me many times , thanks.👍
I'm not certain but the method of setting the idle should work the same!! Check the service manual for idle speed!
Similar but the Virago’s have twin carbs similar to the 80’s Honda shadows
I tip my hat to you, good sir, for your knowledge is abundant, and your humor is magic!
Thanks for watching! 🍻
Thanks for the knowledge. I have 98 Honda shadow ace vt750 chain driven.
Siiiick
I own an 82 VF 750 Magna and my questions is does having double the cylinders make it doubly as good?
If that thought makes you happy, sure. Lol
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS 😆
You guys any closer to a jockey shifter for the vt750dc? I'm so ready to make mine more sketch.
Love the content! Really helpful. On a single pin crank 2003 Shadow Ace. Idle should be around 1200 +-100? Thank You
Great explanation, thanks, it's really useful knowledge 👍
Hey gotta question for you I've got a 2001 honda shadow spirit vt750dc I need 45 inch throttle cables push &pull throttle do you guys got cables for me and how much
everything we offer is on shoptjbc.com
Wonder if you can somehow reroute oil to the heads and keep the low rpm’s low and still get oil
no. honda had external oil lines on the 88 VT600, but realized this didnt do jack and so removed them for 89.
Get a bag of ice
does the Harley Milwaukee eight engine have the single pin crank.
pretty sure most if not all HD engines are single pin crankshaft design with two lobes.
@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS why does Harley still use single pin crank. no one else does.
@@concrete981 because they don't want to lose their sound? Strange hill to die on, clinging to outdated technology but whatever, I'm just here to ride stuff and build stuff🤷🏻♂️
I just bought a 750 Honda shadow Spirit. Previous owner put Vance and Himes pipes on it. It’s way too loud for me so I bought a set of stock pipes. Is there anything that has to be done to this motor when the stock pipes are put back on?
Maybe a tune
Would you suggest a 750 over a 1100 for a first bike? I’ve heard great things about both of them
Get both
Great video! Always love your stuff and your entertainment. Now I just need to find the one on how to put on straight pipes and tune the dual carbs on the VT1100C2 Saber. 😎
Good video.
Not sure, we don't have a bike here that new, haha
great video
what do you think about the Honda shadow 400 cc
and is it a single or a dual pin ?
I'm talking like 1998-2004
single pin crank
I found your video helpful because I would have tucked my bike up . I am looking at buying a honda shadow 750
This is amazing. I will do this. 👍 Do you happen to have a wire diagram for the headlights ?
I had no idea the low idle would short the oil to the heads. Thanks.
🍻
Thank you for the information. I had mine turned way too low. Luckily, I have not put a bunch of miles on it since turning it down.
Nice
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS I don’t have an electronic tachometer. Could I use my electrical tester to set my RPMs?
@@boomerang32 Not sure never did it,
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS OK thanks I’ll give it a try cause it’s an automotive electrical tester. It shows RPMs I think.
@@boomerang32 siiick
I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit. How do i know if it is a single or double pin crank? My owners and service manual says idle speed shoul be 1,000 +/- 100 RPM. But i did buy the same tach and set my idle up to 1,200 for now
I’m glad I watched this video. I just bought my first Honda shadow 750 yesterday.
Enjoy it!!!
alot of people say the VTX 1300 should run at 900 + - 100 should they be at 1200 too?
Off the top of my head I don't recall but the service manual is where you'll want to look
You say not to wrap the exhaust is that just to the ones you make it is that your opinion on all exhaust and wraps
Here ya go. Not an opinion. Metallurgy and thermodynamics i think. support.shoptjbc.com/article/54-header-wrap-good-or-bad
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS really just liked the “mesh” look on the exhaust. Better to just let the chrome show.
Thank you for sharing what you do
🍻
I have a 400 and i wanna do this mod with the stack or pod filter but i cant seem to find what size they are 😅
What do you recommend a good idle speed for 2000 Shadow 1100 ?
1100 idle RPM's after warmed up to operating temps.
@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS I'm also trying to locate an oil leak looks like it's coming from the upper part of the head and straight down onto the kickstand
@@chrissteepy7195 sounds fun! Lol
It is I love my bike.
Great advice and great budget recommendation buying one of those tools as soon as possible thanks !
Glad it was helpful! 🍻
I have a 2000 shadow spirit vt1100. Whats the rpm for that? The same?
check the service manual 😎
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS didn't come with one..... And all the forums are just people arguing but thanks
I had an issue with this once when I let mine idle to long. Was a temporary problem thank God.
👍
can you get a thin oil hose to cylinder heads to keep it "hot and wet" !?
is it possible? is that gonna cause other problems
thanks for your time
Not sure what you're talking about, but we do love thinks hot and wet, like burritos.
Buy and another bike!
@ everything else about it is perfect.
My Honda Shadow 1100 is making weird noise, it sounds like Taka Taka Taka Taka Taka but it used to sound like Do Do Do Do Do. Do you know what it could be?
Jesus christ. Im Sorry the crystal ball is broken. 🤣
Great information I learn more and more as I watch your videos for my 1997 Honda Shdow VT600 I definitely want to take care of my bike as much as possible again great information. Looking to buy more parts soon from your website 🙏
Thank you so much for the support
Just an FYI - the ACE 750 idle speed (according to Hondas shop manual) is 1,000 + or - 100
👍
The 1995 ace 1100 is the same 1,000 rpm +/- 100
Excellent video, great insight and antics 🤣
I do have a question about how muffed I am with my 750c2b I was hoping for some input. She's been sitting for a couple years and I believe the engine is seized. I'm on day 2 of waiting for PB to drown the rings. I pushed a borescope down the cylinder and captured a video and was hoping you might be able to give any next-step-insight
Buy a car
Thanks for the info..1st time Shadow vt400 owner & rider. .😎👍
