Hi Dennis. I bought a 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit C2 last year. I've been loooking for a video to change the oil without a lift. Your angles and walkthrough commentary was great! Thank You.
I am new to fixing and changing stuff on my bike! I am a woman and dont like to depend on others 😁 I just fixed my 2001 750 honda shadow ace after watching some videos on youtube because it stopped in the middle of an autism ride! Just got my motorcycle jack and will be doing work on it this winter to prepare for the 2022 spring! 🥰 Thank you so much for the oil change video! I will do it this week! You video and explanations are easy to follow and your voice is so calm that it looks easier than it is 😄 Thank you!!!
Thanks I'm old school, I use straight weight Castrol oil ,with 1/2 cup of marvel mystery oil to reduce friction ,done it this way on every bike I own for 30 yrs , started this on my 75 motor quzie ,run 400 tho ,2 shadows over200 thousand no problems 😊
I also have the same bike. 23,000 and just starting to warm up. Great bike I traded in my Harley for this. My Harley spent more time in the shop than on the road. My Honda’s ( I have 2 ) They never or-rarely give me any issues. Truly great bikes... Sorry Harley’s folks but these bikes are so much fun and hassle free. Guess who is changing to K AND M Filters! That nut on top is great!never thought of that!
Thank you, Mr. Coffey! My '99 Shadow American Classic thanks you, I thank you, and my wife thanks you! Side Note: *also I'm a huge fan of the movie The Green Mile so the spelling of your last name alone made me hit like and subscribe. All the best.
I have a 2002 Shadow Ace 750 VT750CDD, my manual says NOT to screw the dipstick in to check the oil level, just get the bike vertical then put in the dipstick and check the level. Maybe you have a different model. Great video, thanks.
You are correct! And thanks for pointing that out. I've always screwed it in fully to get a reading, but apparently that isn't necessary. It looks like it will only create a very slight difference (looking at my dipstick), but, for the sake of accuracy, it should only be put in far enough to seat, but not screwed in completely. Thank you for watching and thanks for the comment!
Also your video on removing the rear tire was helpful. I was wondering how to get my torque wrench on that rear axle nut without removing the muffler, never crossed my mind to just torque it from the other side, got it torqued down correctly now, thanks.
Dennis, Thanks for the great video. I have a 2003 ACE VT750 CDB, same as yours. I will be doing my first oil change soon and your video will be very helpful.
Fantastic! One item to note that a kind viewer pointed out to me.....in my video, I say to screw the dipstick all the way in to check the oil. The manual actually says to just push it in until it seats, but do not screw it in to check the oil. I don't think it will make anything more than a minor difference in the oil level, but it is worth noting that I got it wrong in the video. Thanks for watching! I'm sure you'll do a great job!
@@dwcoffey you are the only one I could find that explained how to change it without a lift or torque wrench but still be able to get the job done thank you 🙏🏽

Do you need motorcycle specific oil or can you use regular car oil. I bought some 10w 40 for my honda shadow but its not motorcycle specific. Im wanting to know if i can still use it. Its just the cheap stuff from Walmart
Dennis, I had my bike in the shopfor another reason, but told them to go ahead and do and oil change. REcently, it was time for me to change it again. Well, they must have used an impact wrench to put the drain plug on. The nut is starting to strip, any ideas how to get it off? I don't have a lift, so there is no room to get a breaker bar under there. /any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Ted
Hey Ted, thanks for watching! I'll never understand why shops feel the need to over tighten drain plugs and oil filters. To avoid rounding off the plug, I'd be sure to use a 6-point socket or a flare nut wrench. Without a lift, I can't think of another way to get enough room for a breaker bar besides laying it over on its side, gently. I have to say, I'd be real tempted to take it back to the shop and tell them they have a problem they need to fix. Maybe they could get it on a lift and at least break the plug loose for you, tighten it to normal specs and then you can do your oil change. I also like that idea because, it is possible they cross threaded it, making it hard to remove. If they did, they should fix that for you at no charge. I hope you get that worked out.
Sir, I just bought a classic addition 2006 Honda Shadow Spirit. My question is, can I use normal conventional 10/30 oil, or does it have to be synthetic blend?
Regarding the drain bolt, I always use the shortest wrench and a new aluminum crush washer. I never over-tighten anything. The oil filter is ALWAYS hand-tightened; it manages to tighten itself enough that I still need a wrench to get it off. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for watching! It came from Motorcycle Enterprises, and unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I haven't seen one available from anybody else.
Dennis Can you use car antifreeze in the Honda shadow one Guy said He used it in His Honda Goldwing. He said to use the yellow antifreeze. So If you can please let me know.
Thanks for watching! I only use Honda antifreeze, but my understanding is that you can use any type as long as it is silicate free. So, I'd check the labels carefully, but any that is silicate free should say so.
Dennis, Which brand Floorboards you recommend ? I would rather spend a little more and get a “ Better Brand” which are the ones you have ? It’s the only piece I am missing to have my bike complete. Thank you in advance.
Hi Leonardo. My floorboards are made by MC Enterprises, but I don't think they are around anymore. I'm not too familiar with any others as these are the only ones I've ever had. Good luck and I hope you find a set you like. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, thank you very much. I was just wondering about using motorcycle oil compared to motor oil. I bought 10 40 oil that doesn’t have the stamp on the back just like you instructed but I’m hearing from people that you need to use motorcycle oil specifically or els you can damage the clutch.
Thanks for watching, Seamus! According to Honda, as long as your motor oil does not have "Energy Conserving" in the compliance stamp, it is ok to use with a wet clutch. That's all I use and have never had a problem.
Dennis, I use a long funnel to do mine, about $2 at walmart. Also, I use a HIFLO HF303 filter for $3.55 on Bikebandit. Great videos!! Going to adjust my rear brake TODAY! I have a 2001 VT 750CD ACE, 29,800 miles, original owner!.....where are you from Dennis, I lived many years in Greensboro NC your accent sounds familiar!
when checking your oil.... warm your engine for a few minutes, the wait another 3-5 minutes after turning off the engine, always have the bike straight/vertical. remove the dipstick, clean it, put the dipstick back into the reservoir BUT DO NOT SCREW IT IN, re-check the oil level.
@ 5:03 there is a black hose or bar i can't tell what it is on your bike but on mine, there is a hose there adjacent to the nut you unscrew to change the oil ... you have to use a wrench as opposed to a socket wrench to unscrew this or you will hit this hose and it will be in the way (at least on my bike) what is this hose or line called? mine appears to be split at the joint right about where the nut is that you unscrew to change the oil ... just bought the bike and was about to do my first oil change and I noticed it appears to have a split there but I can't be sure unless I really propped up the bike high enough to see under there. can you tell me what this line or hose is.
Could you please make a video on your floorboards and how to change coolant please please please !!!! I have honda shadow ace 2003 and struggling to find right floorboards for it. I like your video dennis you are so so thourough. Cheers mate.
Thanks for watching, Abhishek! The floorboards on my bike were made by MC Enterprises. I don't think they are available anymore. I haven't needed to change my coolant yet, but will definitely make a video when I do! Thanks!
What oil drain pan are you using? I don't have the ACE, I just have the Aero, but I'm worried about ground clearance. If I put a dye in my synthetic, what stops the auto shop from putting dye in conventional? I would like to change my own oil.
Yes, I change all my own oil....at least I know what I'm putting into the engines. I got my drain pan at AdvanceAuto Parts. I'm sorry but I don't know the brand and the sticker for it is long gone. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for watching, Lance! They are Motorcycle Enterprises floor boards....I don't think they are in business anymore, sadly. I like these because they are hinged....much better fro hard leans.
Hey Jordon, thanks for watching! I get 120 miles without going into reserve. I've never run it completely out of gas, but I suspect I can get another 35-ish miles out of reserve. This bike holds 0.9 gallons in reserve.
@@dwcoffey I figure about 45 MPG but I like to stop every 100 miles to fill up. I have to use high test, or I get really monsterous back firing..even with it I get a good deal of backfires..any clue??
Hi Dennis, your video's are wonderful thank you. I was wondering though on my 2006 Aero should I use a synthetic oil or just regular? and same with the gear oil, synthetic or regular? thank you so much!
Hi Janice, thanks so much for watching! I'm actually not very familiar with synthetic oils. I only use Valvoline regular oil. That's probably a little old school, but I've just always had great results and haven't been compelled to change yet! haha. Same with any gear oil, etc I need.
Hi. I'm new to riding and wondering when you know it's time to change the oil. Ive got a 2015 Honda Shadow Phantom. Ive already put new short shot pipes on it myself and an oil change seems easy but just not sure when to do it.
Hi Amanda, thanks for watching! That's great that you've put your pipes on....I bet it sounds great! I change my oil every 3000 miles. I don't like putting an oil-change sticker on my bike, so I just leave a post-it note on my toolbox with the next mileage point.
Amanda, it depends on how many miles you do, I do mine a little sooner than Dennis, about 2500 miles, or the end of the season, like October, no matter how few miles I do. Did you adjust the carburetor for the new pipes?
Hey Dennis, Can you do a tutorial on how you installed the light bar you have on this shadow 750. I have the same light bar and could use your expertise on install to my 2002 750 ace
I'm sorry for the delay...working too much. I took a look at mine.....the light bar has two tabs that sit on top of the bottom section of the triple tree. There are 2 holes that line up with holes in the triple tree from the factory, those holes are used to mount the light bar. I have mine wired into the headlight harness so that when the headlight is on, power is on the light bar. My light bar has a switch to turn the lights off/on if needed. I hope this helps!
@@dwcoffey Thank you Dennis for taking the time to look into my question and give me a good write up on how to install the lightbar. I will take another look for the holes in the triple tree. Again thank you!
One quick question.....All the information and manuals I've read say when checking the oil level to NOT screw the dipstick back in. Just insert it until the threads hit and then read the oil mark.........
It's a great video BTW.....I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I just bought a 2002 Shadow Ace and was wondering how to measure gauge it. I think different bikes do it diffferently.....Too confusing.
Thanks for watching Jeffrey! I almost did the same thing when I first got my ACE.....the additives in the energy conserving oil will interact badly with the clutch.
@@dwcoffey Im 24 and I learned this lesson the hard way.... now everytime I start the bike up it makes a knocking sound around the shifter. Got rid of the 10 30w motor oil at least, I don't know what to do at this point. Don't want to spend thousands at a Honda dealership either. Any advice for the younger generation, sir? =)
Pls can you tell me how to get to the LOW OIL SENSOR CUT OFF SWITCH for my 02 Honda shadow ACE 750? I chAnged the oil last night and may have put lower than recommended by accident. Ive topped it off with the right amount but and my dipstick gauge is showing full but It won’t start. I was told there’s a low oil cut off switch but I can’t find it. I can’t find my manual. Thank you.
@@dwcoffey Good stuff! Just got mine delivered yesterday. (Along with the oil, the filter, and new LED strips. Guess how I'm starting off the holiday! Happy riding! And thanks again for all of your helpful videos. I've used a few of them already myself!
Man, I don't know how you made that look so easy. Mine is kicking my butt. I have zero room/clearance to turn my wrench. And if I try to use the jack (which is the same one you use in your video on how to change the tire) it completely blocks access to plug and filter.
Thanks for watching, Max! I don't know if you've been able to get the filter off since commenting, but if not, I'd try one of those filter wrenches that have some teeth to grab the filter with and with the longest handles you can manage...they will give you more leverage on the filter. Make sure you are turning it counterclockwise as you look at the canister-end of the filter.

I have a 2001 VT 750CD ACE, 29,800 miles, original owner!.....where are you from Dennis, I lived many years in Greensboro NC your accent sounds familiar!
Thanks for watching, Ted! Yes, a long funnel has got to be the best way.....thanks!
when checking your oil.... warm your engine for a few minutes, the wait another 3-5 minutes after turning off the engine, always have the bike straight/vertical. remove the dipstick, clean it, put the dipstick back into the reservoir BUT DO NOT SCREW IT IN, re-check the oil level.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! That is the lower radiator hose. Hope you get it all fixed and get out to ride!
Thanks!
i do have one curiosity do you put the same oil you put on on your car or is a special oil for honda shadow
Thanks for watching, Alejandro! No, you have to make sure the oil you use in your Shadow is not marked as 'Energy Conserving' , see 1:43 in the video.
@@dwcoffey thanks you so much for your help
Thank you kind sir for your service
Thank you for watching!
This is a great video. Thank you!
Thanks for watching, Rhonda!!
Where did you get your heel/toe shifter? I have this exact bike and cannot find one.
Thanks for watching! It was on the bike when I bought it, but I think it came from Motorcycle Enterprises. Unfortunately, they are not around anymore.
@@dwcoffey Dang. Looks like I'm going to have to have someone make something custom I guess. Thanks!
We're did you get your floor board I heard the Cobra ones with won't fit ..thanks for the info
Thank you for watching, Lance! They are Motorcycle Enterprises floor boards....I don't think they are in business anymore, sadly. I like these because they are hinged....much better fro hard leans.
@@dwcoffey I can't seem to find any ... Something about the cobras don't fit
MC Enterprises might still be around....I just did a search and found these: www.jpcycles.com/product/zz55164/mc-enterprises-driver-floorboards
Gracias por el video señor dennis
De nada señor Sergio! Thank you for watching!
Hey Denis I just got the same bike a weeks ago. I was wondering how many miles you get on your tank before filling up. Thanks
Thank you
My 07 vlx 600 goes to reserve at 170 k .
Thanks for watching! The light bar was installed on mine when I bought it...but I'll try to get a chance to look at it and see if I can help.
@@dwcoffey thank u for quick reply and I really could use the help on getting my light bar installed.. You do great work & easy to follow along.
Let me know if I can help. Good luck!
One quick question.....All the information and manuals I've read say when checking the oil level to NOT screw the dipstick back in. Just insert it until the threads hit and then read the oil mark.........
Yes, you are correct. I did that incorrectly in the video. Thanks for watching!
It's a great video BTW.....I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I just bought a 2002 Shadow Ace and was wondering how to measure gauge it. I think different bikes do it diffferently.....Too confusing.
No worries Shawn! Thanks for pointing that out!
your video helps out a lot. Well time to go empty out the energy conserving oil on my shadow ace ahahaha... ):
Thanks for watching Jeffrey! I almost did the same thing when I first got my ACE.....the additives in the energy conserving oil will interact badly with the clutch.
@@dwcoffey Im 24 and I learned this lesson the hard way.... now everytime I start the bike up it makes a knocking sound around the shifter. Got rid of the 10 30w motor oil at least, I don't know what to do at this point. Don't want to spend thousands at a Honda dealership either. Any advice for the younger generation, sir? =)
Hello Dennis I was wondering what's the brand of your highway bar on your motorcycle.
Hi Paul, I have a Cobra highway bar on my ACE. Thanks for watching!
I also did cobra bars.
Is that the same as my bike, it’s a ruckus?
Hi, where did you get your Heel Toe Shifter?
It was made by Motorcycle Enterprises, sadly they are no longer around. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching, Milan!
great job
Thanks for watching, Gonzo!
Thank you.
I'm not on the bike today, so I'll have to look when I'm home, but I 'think' it is on the right side, under the engine, next to the oil filter.
Dennis Coffey Thank you for getting back to me. Pls check for me when you get home. I can’t find it. Thank you.
I'm not 100% certain but most of the lower end wiring is behind the drive sprocket cover. It's easy t take off...I'd check there first.
Dennis Coffey thank you. I’ll check it and get back to you.
멋진 바이크 이다.
Thank you for watching! It's been a good bike!

Great video brother.
Thanks for watching, Edward!
Where did you get the pipes?
They're Vance and Hines Cruzers. Man they sound good on this ACE engine! Thanks for watching!
Anthony I also put Vance and Hines on my 2001 ACE and it sounds insane.
Is that oil plug washer rubber? Is it a crush washer?
Hey Robert, thanks for watching. It's a crush washer. Part number for mine, 2003 Vt750 ACE is 94109-14000
@@dwcoffey Sweet! Thanks for the response. That's the one I was hoping it was. Found them on Amazon. 20 for $6.99
Your reply made me go looking, I just bought the same set! Thanks!
And if I try to use the jack (which is the same one you use in your video on how to change the tire) it completely blocks access to plug and filter.
great video
Thank you Steve!
I can’t get filter off. It has no nut to connect to and is not turning with hand. Used sandpaper & all. The new filter does have a nut.
I ended up stabbing the filter with a screwdriver & twisted & it came right off with a nice little oil splashing. 😅
Thanks for the info .... I'm just your average back yard garage hack... I have the same bike and haven't done an oil change, so thanks!
Thanks for watching, Lester!
thanks for your video its help true
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you for posting. Have a 2000 ACE with unnecessary 'downtime' (IT-speak).. coz I take to my mechanic for an oil change.. who of course can't get to it right awaay. Your video is detailed enough to demystify the process. Thx!!
Get a lift, it is easier on old bones. I fill the filter with oil before installing it, I do not know why it just seems right.
Thanks for watching, Daniel! Yes, a lift definitely makes it easier. I have another video on the lift I use now.
How many litre oil need ?
the 750 takes 2.2 litres. Thanks for watching!

Must be 2014 or higher Honda Shadow aero oil change. Where's the oil plug?
Not an American classic. The basic 2014 Honda Shadow aero oil change must be 2014, not American classic
Mine is a 2003 ACE. Oil plug is in the oil pan as shown in the video.
Yep, my bike is definitely an American Classic. 2003.
Hey Dennis will this work for 1998 Honda Shadow 750?
Hey Alex, I'm not completely familiar with the 1998 Shadow, but it should be very similar, yes.
Okay thank you Dennis
