Cases of identity theft are on the rise in Canada. While many people think it will never happen to them, identity thieves are getting more and more effective. It’s important to stay up to date on how you can protect yourself.
Identity theft is the term for when someone gets access to enough of your personal details to effectively impersonate you. This allows them to do all sorts of harmful things, like taking out loans in your name or getting access to your bank accounts.
Identity thieves steal people’s information through many avenues. There are high-tech methods, like stealing information shared over unsecured websites or networks, or buying information that was leaked in a data breach. There are also low-tech methods, like stealing someone’s mail. Other times, they’ll pose as someone else and ask for information over the phone.
Digitally, there are a few things you need to ensure that you’re doing. First of all, passwords: make sure they’re strong, and make sure each of your online accounts has a unique password.
Enable two-factor authentication on any website or app that allows you to. And certainly, be extremely careful about email-based phishing scams - don’t click links in emails unless you’re 100% sure you can trust the sender. Don’t send sensitive information (like credit card numbers) via email.
Keep your phone locked with a PIN or biometric passcode (like your thumbprint). And, set up a remote data wipe functionality in case the phone goes missing.
On the physical side, leave non-essential pieces of ID at home. You don’t need your SIN card on your person in day-to-day life. If you lose your purse or wallet, take action immediately to cancel credit cards and get the IDs replaced.
You can also get in touch with credit reporting bureaus like Equifax and TransUnion. They can add an alert to your file that will inform you if there’s any suspicious activity going on in your name.
Finally, consider getting identity theft insurance. It can cost as little as a few dollars per month. You can even add ID theft insurance when you buy home insurance from Square One.
If you suspect your identity has been stolen, file a police report. If you have ID theft insurance, contact your provider to start a claim. Start changing passwords, beginning with banks and government services. The faster you move, the more you can mitigate the damage.
