What a brilliant mind and far ahead of his time. This song, like many of TR's songs, sends a very powerful message. Like the poster before me, I saw this concert in Memphis, Tn and folk went totally nuts when he belted out this one. Been a Todd fan for over 30 years. Always a thrill to see/hear him progress in his gifted field. Brought me much pleasure throughout my life and now my adult children are fans. Says a lot about the talent, don't ya think?
THANK YOU for putting up this video!!! An incredible song by an incredible artist. It's also fantastic live, it'll have you up on your feet and screaming!!!
If you hate this song so much then I suspect you never read and tried to understand the lyrics. The song title can be off-putting to religious people, but like the cover of a book the lyrics reveal more about Todd's message than you can infer from the title. You've completely missed the point Todd is making by not taking a hard look at the lyrics. He's not in any way dissing the Son of God as a person; his protest is aimed specifically at those who would twist The Word for their own agenda.
Yeah, this was a pretty daring move for Todd. I remember this and 2 other videos from the "No World Order" disc getting banned almost immediately from MTV & VH-1. This was actually a great LP if you can find it-Highly recommended.
Todd was so "on his game" during this period (late 80s to early 90s) of his career! I love pretty much all of Todd's stuff, but I have to say that Nearly Human, Second Wind, and No World Order (even though very different from those other records) are just completely phenomenal records!!! That's not to take anything away from any of Todd's other works - I love it all!!! However, for me, Todd just took it up another notch on these albums.
Dark, both visually and thematically, you can interpret its meaning in many ways.. as with "Change Myself," ALL of the 3D rendering and other video effects were created by Todd using Amiga personal computers equipped with Newtek Video Toasters and Lightwave 3D rendering software.. I saw this video premiered at SIGGRAPH in the early 1990s, projected on a huge outdoor screen to an SRO crowd of over two thousand computer graphics geeks at the Newtek party held at the (now defunct) Movieland Wax Museum.. I seriouly doubt MTV or VH-1 EVER played it..
Much Music in Canada had a show called Too Much For Much where they would play controversial videos that they ban from regular rotation and then have the artist and an antagonist debate the subject in the specific video. They did an episode on this particular video and had Rundgren debating a Catholic priest about the video’s content.
Just my own opinion...Todd Rundgren is the most articulate and listenable singer songwriter america has produced...from his "wall of sound" earlier recordings right through the 70s prog and 80s pop and the 90s & 00s high concept, the man reinvents the musical wheel as he sees fit, and im onboard for the ride...In England we dont have a "Todd", we have good musicians but not "ground breakers"...Thanks America for Utopia, Zappa and the Tubes...Mavericks All...
Mr. AlienRelics - yes, he made (at least) two videos with Amigas and NewTek Toasters. This one (the second) and the first one, "Change Myself" which I uploaded to RUclips some months ago. Search for it
Todd was ahead of his time with his observations in this song. Read Chris Hedges' book 'American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America' for details of this proto-fascist movement that's been with us since the Reagan administration. Serious scholars of fascism point to its signs visible in the evangelical movement.
Look very carefully at the last second or so of the video..you may have to back up and replay it, or hit pause, because it's barely on-screen for half a second..
Twenty years on, the song is still apt and accurate. Just look at the teabaggers and their desire to seize power and eradicate anyone who doesn't share their narrow minded view. The only solutions religions offer are FINAL solutions. .
Brilliant video and ahead of its time-think election day, November, 2010. Big trouble when intolerant people get ahold of big power-see Chris Hedges...
The left wants you to stay out of their bedroom... Unless it's to get free contraception and to clean up their "inconvenient" pregnancies. Then they WANT you at their "bedroom door"... Funny how that works.
In what you see as "self-indulgent crap" I see absolutely brilliant conceptual art, political commentary, the expansion of a musical form and very much more. I do "get it". As to sales numbers... WTF does that have to do as far as any validity of the effort or the outcome? Nothing. Were it the true determination, Coltrane would have sold far more than The Spice Girls. You're allowed not to "get it", of course. Just don't complain that you don't. "Get your head straight."
Jesus was more of a Socialist than a Fascist, but I can see where Todd is coming from with this song. He will disavow the right-wingers who claimed they followed him when he comes back saying "I never knew you. Get away from me, you evil people!".
Todd criticizm here is those who twist Christ into a message of their own desire of political or power faction...........it is not a contemptment towards Christ himself but those followers who have pervernted that message.
@MrCrowtown Todd is talking about the Catholic church. Todd is not against Jesus, he is saying that Jesus' words have been twisted to fit someone else's, the Catholic church's, agenda. He is saying somebody has gotten between man and God.
@MrCrowtown Why would u stop going to see him because he doesn't like Huck? I mean, Todd writes about everything an any fan knows he is into politics. I like the fact he is so outspoken on world affairs.
Definately "No World Order." In case you didn't get the message from "Swing to the Right" which somebody seriously needs to find and post if at all possible.
No proof of any kind of god exists. Period. If you want to believe based on faith, that's your choice -- but it doesn't make it fact. I could have faith that Poseidon or Zeus or Aphrodite or James Bond are real; Does that make them real factually? No. This song is fantastic! One of my favorite of the "later" Todd years.
@dariowestern Oh Bull, Christ was far from a socialist. He never said to take, steal, from others and redistribute the wealth. He said, to work and to be good to others. Social justice is NOT in the word of God.
@MrCrowtown The basic text in the qu'ran is bad, it's foundation is hateful. The Bible on the other hand, doesn't tell u to kill non-believers, it tells u to love and pray for them. It doesn't hate homosexuals, it tells u to pray for them. If someone who doesn't understand this, ex:The Westboro Chrush, it is not a true representation of Christianity. Just like the Catholic church is not a true rep of Christianity. They twist the text to fit their agenda.
@bapyou The other day I told this female I worked with that I was going to a Vegan Cafe', she stated soy is bad for you. I replied that's not true, the breast cancer rate in asian women is like 1.2% and when they move to America their cancer rates soar because they change their eating habits She got all mad, told my supervisor I was rude, and guess what, I got fired. Tell me this, do you think stating a fact is something to be fired for?
@DizziNY1 "if someone has a diff POV you call them creeps and insult them." If all there was to evangelical Christian is the fact that they have a "different point of view," then I'd agree with your statement. Such is not the case. ECs are the vanguard of fascism in America. If you've read the serious scholarship on how fascist movements came about in Germany & Italy during economic collapse (as I have), the fact I call them names is the least of the issue.
@MrCrowtown A Utopiam society will never be because of people's own self interests. It is sad but true. I don't agree w Todd on everything, but I do on most things. I don't agree w most Christians on things like vegetarianism, but I believ it is what God wld have us do. Our pipeline to God has been blocked up by stupidity. I love America but I do not buy into socialism, I do however buy into independence and helping others who truly need it. Teaching others to be independent is loving.
@Norum86 Oh, come on. You really think muslim extremists have the monopoly on trying to coerce the masses into their beliefs? Personally, the current crop of republican presidential hopefuls has this song screaming in my head right now.
@bapyou First off, you are catagorizing ME without even knowing me and that is generalizing which is wrong. I do not force what I believe on anyone. When someone asks you a question and you are blunt and honest with them, they can't handle it. As for name calling, no, you shouldn't do it. If you want to lower yourself you can, but as for me, I am better than that.
Can't even sing jingle bells without someone saying it's religeous...can't have that...no Christmas tree's, no crucifixes, nothing to do with Christianity...or we'll take it to the supreme court...Go somewhere else where the country isn't founded on Jesus ! Good Luck...LOL...better watch your back...in God WE trust...
@MrGenXer Ah no cuz he tells the truth. Do u even READ my posts? I said, Todd is NOT against Jesus but the people who have twisted his words. You need to wake up.
@dariowestern Not only that but Jesus never singled out anyone, right, left, middle of the road. He said, the fake believers, so stop interjecting you pvt interpretation and opinion into Jesus' words.
@DizziNY1 Seriously?! Can't handle any rappers out there? Not even Chuck D? Dude, Todd's my fave, but hearing him rap is excruciatingly embarrassing. He should have had someone rap it for him...or he should've put a minimal melody. He's got no flow in his rhymes. Ugh. It's the era of Todd's work that, for the most part, I'd like to forget.
I think this tune was all in all a misstep for him, one because it's overtly political and two because it's a rap song. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but loathing and contempt for religious nutters who feel the government is theirs to control at the exclusion of everyone else and think they have a God-given right to lord it over the rest of society. But I would expect better than this from a musical talent the likes of Rundgren
@cubdukat If you don't like him, don't listen to him. You criticize him and yet you are in NO WAY as talented and successful as he is. Hmmmm. Now, go back to your $7 an hour job and be quiet.
I think Todd makes the point well in this song: of course Jesus Christ is not a fascist, but there will always be those who corrupt His message to suit their own agenda.
I love Rundgren's music from 1973 - 1977 especially AWOTS but hate his politics. This proud Deplorable challenges Todd to compose a double album Rock Opera titled Fascist Mohammed but the coward he is - he won't.
What a brilliant mind and far ahead of his time. This song, like many of TR's songs, sends a very powerful message.
Like the poster before me, I saw this concert in Memphis, Tn and folk went totally nuts when he belted out this one. Been a Todd fan for over 30 years. Todd Rundgren is an influence to me and any other artist he gives confidence to that you can get up and perform your music by yourself.
the dancing cross says it all
Thanks. Todd is always relevant.
verbalosity relevant only if you change "Christ" to "Mohammed"
He's a real artist!!!love his rap!!!
THANK YOU for putting up this video!!! An incredible song by an incredible artist. It's also fantastic live, it'll have you up on your feet and screaming!!!

"Get your head straight." All three are totally brilliant works which ONLY Todd could pull off.
Todd was so "on his game" during this period (late 80s to early 90s) of his career! I love pretty much all of Todd's stuff, but I have to say that Nearly Human, Second Wind, and No World Order (even though very different from those other records) are just completely phenomenal records!!! Your welcome! this was shared by someone else to me! I love the loop, so to speak!
Thank You for this video! X-D

hrlaser They Refused to
Ha! I was at that event! That's when they premiered the Screamer too, wasn't it? I met Kiki too!!!

Thank you; been looking along time
Tood is the only person I can deal with when he raps.
This is an interesting video from Todd Rundgren. It sounds almost like a rap video, just shows the versitility of this musician.

Thanks for this gem!!
I have that song in my collection. Thank U 4 sharing it. Very best wishes, VJ ETC, Berlin...
I wish Todd would've made more music videos, all of the ones he's made have been so visually stimulating

Love the bending of the cross into a Schwastika!
Todd's genius versatility goes rap rock

Chuck D & NIneInchNails.... if it comes in Butterscotch or Sarsaparilla, I'll buy it!!!
I'm told he did this with an Amiga wth Newtek Video Toaster, using Lightwave for the 3D stuff.
BRILLIANT
great
Twenty years on, the song is still apt and accurate. Just look at the teabaggers and their desire to seize power and eradicate anyone who doesn't share their narrow minded view.
The only solutions religions offer are FINAL solutions.
.
Word up!
Howdy, Mr Laser! Yep, I remember reading about "Change Myself" when he made it. Very cool.
Brilliant video and ahead of its time-think election day, November, 2010. Big trouble when intolerant people get ahold of big power-see Chris Hedges...
Brilliant commentary on where we'd been in '93, and the horrors of what was to come, with the "far right" heretics!
The left wants you to stay out of their bedroom... Unless it's to get free contraception and to clean up their "inconvenient" pregnancies. Then they WANT you at their "bedroom door"... Funny how that works.
Ken Steiger
Yep, there is no moral high ground for either party to occupy...and nothing good has ever come out of politics and religion.
It's comments like yours that bolster the argument for free contraception.
In what you see as "self-indulgent crap" I see absolutely brilliant conceptual art, political commentary, the expansion of a musical form and very much more. I do "get it".

My favourite rap song ever. THe only one I like.
"It sounds almost like a rap video". Ya think?

Todd is smart. Intelligent lyrics. Yes, "seperate the church from the state" (don't make your 'beliefs' my laws) (and I am a believer in God).
Kinda genius
jesus ,what have they done to you.todd's got teeth.amen.
I agree with you Jennifer McGeen... Sometimes, Todd is to smart for some ?
And all of those who have tried to separate us from God.
Definately "No World Order." In case you didn't get the message from "Swing to the Right" which somebody seriously needs to find and post if at all possible.

Roberts Bud Nah...they'll probably shoot him.
Jesus cant be killed.
Todd is in alignnent with the Real Jesus unlike those who claim to be but are not
Thank You Todd and for posting this . Peace
Are you hearing what I'm hearing ? No...it's all personal interpretation Jesus is my King, and I love this song...
I dunno, but I know he got into some Eastern religion in the late 70's.
im sorry in a word....... BRILLIANT!what do you mean "bad lyrics" WAKE THE F/.CK UP!!!!!
@MrCrowtown The basic text in the qu'ran is bad, it's foundation is hateful. The Bible on the other hand, doesn't tell u to kill non-believers, it tells u to love and pray for them. Who you think your'e messing with?
may offend some, but reallyyyy cool video.
dearest richardkorby:
I believe the song is facist Christ, not facist God.

Thankfully, I DO appreciate his "new things" as you stated, I just don't have to like some of it. Gotta problem with that?

Nope - Presbyterian

This song is chastising the Catholic church who has defiled the true Word of God.
