This was truly what a 'live-action anime' should look like. The cartoonish aspects blend in so well, the flow is perfect, with an atypical protagonist who's a thief who DOESN'T have a heart of gold.
He had a heart of gold in the beginning when he tried to defend the deaf girl and the boys took a piss on him. Society made him a douche, but in the end he came back to his younger, pure self.
Love how waves of sound from music is visualised as lethal weapon. Also, I love how Taichi is represented here. Even a skinny, seamingly weak man can out power simply by deflecting or reflecting forces. He never initiates attack, so peaceful and effortless.

This film is a gem, one of the few films that introduces not just the villain but each individual hero perfectly, we are not automatically told to believe these villains are evil, we are SHOWN how evil by how easily they dispatch the selfless yet capable 1st hero, followed by an epicly orchestrated clash blending the music and "cartoon" animations together so well, it only immerses you more.
As an immigrant raised in old world Indonesia, I can confirm that the older an Asian woman gets the more powerful their voice gets and the scarier they become.

The nature of his kung fu does not put out flashy effect or intimidating pose, he just literally "put them back in their place" lol. This combined with the roar right before is a oh shit moment when you realized that most of the comedic effects from the couple (the husband felt from third floor with a pot right into his head, or the wife run like a fricking looney cartoon) is actually their real skill.
it took a few times but did you notice the complete silence to his moves? they added no sound to him (at least in this fight) until the dual kicks they landed and if you had told me he was asleep until then I'd believe you. 99.9% of the sound were from the dudes, and any from him were his spinning them around until the roar. then all you could hear was her
Their hard set back down, compared to the landlord's soft landing, is also masterful visual story telling. Here's another one for you: Rewatch the end fight, as he does the palm strike from the sky, afterward. Guy gives up, tries to sneak attack him, fails, and in that moment the camera shifts. We see the hero from the Beast's point of view (and that's very important). From his view he's shadowed out and black, you can't tell any of his features. The hero has grown so far beyond the villain, from his view, he can't even see the hero anymore, and the realization drops the beast to his knees, sobbing.
This will always be legendary. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid with my neighbors. It was fun reminiscing those days where we all get together just watching and laughing, sitting beside each other.
So underrated how the guy balances the instrument on his leg, this whole movie is easily top 5 because you can watch it over and over and still be interested 💯

This is the greatest “scream” attack on screen ever. There’s superhero films and horror films etc. but this is the best interpretation of a sonic attack in a movie.
Thats "scream" attack is from classic wuxia novel "heavenly sword & dragon sabre" the last novel from Legend Condors Heroes series The Lion Roar from Chi Sun aka "Golden Lion".
People will mostly praise the action and comedy, but the deaths here are so emotional, including the next scene where they hear the last words of the spear master.
Ten minutes of pure awesome. Everything about this is comedy, action just pure fun. And the roar is like the icing on a fantastic cake, the couple in the car - unforgettable. Much love for something so grand and enjoyable.

This movie was SO refreshing to see when it came out. It's still my fave example of a perfect movie. The heroes don't look like stereotypical heroes--heck, they don't even look like they could physically handle being heroes. Not only that, but it's very hard to predict how the plot will progress. Sure, there are some things that you can assume ("ooh, evil gang is gonna get pwned by 'hero' ")--but how it's gonna get there (and who is gonna get it along the way) is VERY hard to tell. Not only that, but it's FUN and silly while also having moments of unexpected sh*t getting real. Just, absolutely perfect.
Loving how my guy in the silk pj's isn't trying to keep ol' girl inside out of fear of the villains, but out of fear that she's gonna fuck everybody up 😂😅
There was actually some character development after this scene. As Donut was dying, he told the landlord and landlady that he never saw such a powerful technique exist like Lion Roar. The Landlady apologised for being too passive and not interfering early to save their lives because their son passed away and they preferred to lead a quiet life instead of showing off as martial artists. Donut said something like having great power meant that you could not run away from your responsibilities to protect others when innocent people were in need of your help. The three masters (coolie, donut, tailor) gave the landlords a lot of courage, despite being much weaker than them. After all, they were the first ones to stand up to the Axe Gang. Because of that, the landlords made the life-or-death decision to confront the Axe gang directly in their home territory and even faced the Beast. Their relationship also improved after that (previously, the male landlord was a huge pervert who liked to explore other ladies’ bodies).
It's the end that really gets me. The landlord and the landlady suddenly in the car with them, and their reaction to it. The part where he's trying to throw knives at the landlady, and the chase afterwards, still makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it

The hardcore thing of this battle is that I think the blades are not supposed to be seen, it is there for the audience to know how it works but they are invisble and they are fignting blind, ironic given the blindness of the enemy as well, which makes sense since they are fighting against sound which is the musicians strongest sense. So that is the reason why you only see the swords briefly, I know some people may argue that the blades are indeed visible since Donut starts to block them with their spears, but as you can see in 4:01 it is not until the sword gets close to him that he gets to doge it, as if he's only able to detect it at close range, and the part 4:19 also makes it clear that Donut is not focusing on the sound of the music as if he needs to do that in order to know where the attacks are going, and during the entire battle Donut keeps his eyes on them and not the swords and he uses the spears to block the incoming attacks by brandishing them in all directions without looking at the swords because HE CANNOT SEE THEM, just as in 4:29 he jumps forward with his remaining spears in front of him scattered as his attempt to cover more space and block what he cannot see and in 4:35 you can see how close the cuts get to him as if he doesn't know or can see the swords, and that is why his goal is to reach the instrument cause he cannot see the attacks because the attacks are sound. 7:59 I say this part is self explanatory, they can't see the soldiers but they are just a representation of the attack, for me all they can see is the trails of dust from the attack so that is how they are able to tell an incoming attack 1:58, just look a their expressions is that of total blindness which I think is the irony of this fight. (1:52 - 2:16 - 2:46 - 3:12 - 3:57 ) 4:11 look at the Tailor in the background he is trying to see 3:38 this is the only part that tells otherwirse but as I mentioned before it seems that only at close range they are able to detect the attack but that doesn't exaclty mean they can see like we do with the swords, and as I mentioned before, Donut seems to be blocking out the music in his concentration to deflect the attacks and they might be able to see the trail of dust so is not entirely invisible.

This was a beautifully shot movie. The poetic way the spear master moves as he fights his way forward is brilliant, it almost looks like he was dancing and having a grand time! One of my favorite scenes in the movie and that's saying alot because the entire move is awesome!

I can't knock ANY of the special effects. The scene is so meticulous and specific in every frame, it's mesmerizing. The sound editing is also amazing. A+ sound A+ visuals A+ acting A+ scene
I remember when this came out it was the only movie I'd seen that successfully captures the over-the-top fights and characters you see in anime. It *still* might be the best. Same goes for Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a master at mixing comic book-esque characters with wuxia style aciton.

Old landlord just appearing in the fight looking tired and stressed and thrashing them like he’s only there cuz his wife is annoyed about the noise is one of the greatest scenes in martial arts movie history.
Gotta low how since the lovers made an oath never to fight again the first time Landlord actually fights he is doing it so effortlessly, using the foes themselves to inflict damage on eachother. He doesn't use any special tricks like during the Beast fight, he just puts them down in the most peaceful taoist way possible
Eh, no, his special trick is exactly the deflecting of blows. Likewise, he makes no sound when touching the ground, and after they bounce him off, you can see that his motions seem more in line with a floating piece of paper, rather than a physical object. I'm not certain of the actual name, but you could describe it as 'Ragdoll technique'. It's implied earlier in the movie, when his lady hits him or he is in other ways hit by stuff that would definitely injure a normal person, but he just ignores it or pretends to be knocked out. So, it's definitely not as flashy as some other techniques seen in that movie, but it's definitely a special technique he is using. (Alongside being obviously skilled in actual Kung Fu as well.)
It's Taichi and he is a master of it. It's the technique of deflecting or redirecting the energy of the blows of the attackers against them. Obviously, Stephen took liberties to exaggerate the actual art but it's real. Stephen Chow even purposefully draws the Ying Yang symbol on the ground to drive the point home.

Kung Fu Hustle is my favorite movie of all time. And I don't say that lightly. The omage to the Chinese fighting history, the choreography, the humor, and the over the top fights are what make this movie beyond phenomenal. It is so damn good! ❤😢

This is the greatest “scream” attack on screen ever. There’s superhero films and horror films etc. but this is the best interpretation of a sonic attack in a movie.
I remember there was a mutant in Marvel X-Men Academy who had the same superpower that he could kill people with his screams.

People will mostly praise the action and comedy, but the deaths here are so emotional, including the next scene where they hear the last words of the spear master.
Ten minutes of pure awesome. Everything about this is comedy, action just pure fun. And the roar is like the icing on a fantastic cake, the couple in the car - unforgettable. Much love for something so grand and enjoyable.
That female character's name is Xiao Long Nu. And her husband's name is Yang Guo. I don't know why their names are not mentioned in the English subtitle version

This movie was SO refreshing to see when it came out. It's still my fave example of a perfect movie. The heroes don't look like stereotypical heroes--heck, they don't even look like they could physically handle being heroes. Not only that, but it's very hard to predict how the plot will progress. Sure, there are some things that you can assume ("ooh, evil gang is gonna get pwned by 'hero' ")--but how it's gonna get there (and who is gonna get it along the way) is VERY hard to tell. Not only that, but it's FUN and silly while also having moments of unexpected sh*t getting real. Just, absolutely perfect.
The last part where they were all in the car made me laugh so much.

There was actually some character development after this scene. As Donut was dying, he told the landlord and landlady that he never saw such a powerful technique exist like Lion Roar. The Landlady apologised for being too passive and not interfering early to save their lives because their son passed away and they preferred to lead a quiet life instead of showing off as martial artists. Donut said something like having great power meant that you could not run away from your responsibilities to protect others when innocent people were in need of your help. The three masters (coolie, donut, tailor) gave the landlords a lot of courage, despite being much weaker than them. After all, they were the first ones to stand up to the Axe Gang. Because of that, the landlords made the life-or-death decision to confront the Axe gang directly in their home territory and even faced the Beast. Their relationship also improved after that (previously, the male landlord was a huge pervert who liked to explore other ladies’ bodies).
One of the greatest movies ever created. Massive respect for Stephen Chow 👍

The hardcore thing of this battle is that I think the blades are not supposed to be seen, it is there for the audience to know how it works but they are invisble and they are fignting blind, ironic given the blindness of the enemy as well, which makes sense since they are fighting against sound which is the musicians strongest sense.
So that is the reason why you only see the swords briefly, I know some people may argue that the blades are indeed visible since Donut starts to block them with their spears, but as you can see in 4:01 it is not until the sword gets close to him that he gets to doge it, as if he's only able to detect it at close range, and the part 4:19 also makes it clear that Donut is not focusing on the sound of the music as if he needs to do that in order to know where the attacks are going, and during the entire battle Donut keeps his eyes on them and not the swords and he uses the spears to block the incoming attacks by brandishing them in all directions without looking at the swords because HE CANNOT SEE THEM, just as in 4:29 he jumps forward with his remaining spears in front of him scattered as his attempt to cover more space and block what he cannot see and in 4:35 you can see how close the cuts get to him as if he doesn't know or can see the swords, and that is why his goal is to reach the instrument cause he cannot see the attacks because the attacks are sound.
7:59 I say this part is self explanatory, they can't see the soldiers but they are just a representation of the attack, for me all they can see is the trails of dust from the attack so that is how they are able to tell an incoming attack 1:58, just look a their expressions is that of total blindness which I think is the irony of this fight. (1:52 - 2:16 - 2:46 - 3:12 - 3:57 ) 4:11 look at the Tailor in the background he is trying to see
3:38 this is the only part that tells otherwirse but as I mentioned before it seems that only at close range they are able to detect the attack but that doesn't exaclty mean they can see like we do with the swords, and as I mentioned before, Donut seems to be blocking out the music in his concentration to deflect the attacks and they might be able to see the trail of dust so is not entirely invisible.

This was a beautifully shot movie. The poetic way the spear master moves as he fights his way forward is brilliant, it almost looks like he was dancing and having a grand time! One of my favorite scenes in the movie and that's saying alot because the entire move is awesome!

The fact that the guy was balancing on one leg while using the other to keep his instrument steady impresses me to no end. If it IS possible to commit such a feat in real life, they'd have to have damn good balance.

Stephen Chow did so amazing with this movie! Everything! The style, the usage of CGI, the comedy, the music, the acting. Everyone was great in the film, the lives they portrayed looked authentic. What a great movie. Its one of a few dozen i make sure to watch every year.
This is probably hands down one of the best fight scenes ever made.

I remember when this came out it was the only movie I'd seen that successfully captures the over-the-top fights and characters you see in anime. It *still* might be the best. Same goes for Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a master at mixing comic book-esque characters with wuxia style aciton.
Never seen a movie where so much crazy stuff keep happening yet everything is coherent and just pleasant to watch.
After many years, still find this so fascinating.... The sound quality is so good and the fight is so beautiful

I absolutely love this film, and I really don't find myself enjoying a lot these days. It's got everything all in one place, and even if you just skip the subtitles and just sit back to enjoy the ride it's great. I think I'm going to go watch this right now.

Old landlord just appearing in the fight looking tired and stressed and thrashing them like he’s only there cuz his wife is annoyed about the noise is one of the greatest scenes in martial arts movie history.
Gotta low how since the lovers made an oath never to fight again the first time Landlord actually fights he is doing it so effortlessly, using the foes themselves to inflict damage on eachother. He doesn't use any special tricks like during the Beast fight, he just puts them down in the most peaceful taoist way possible
Eh, no, his special trick is exactly the deflecting of blows. Likewise, he makes no sound when touching the ground, and after they bounce him off, you can see that his motions seem more in line with a floating piece of paper, rather than a physical object. I'm not certain of the actual name, but you could describe it as 'Ragdoll technique'. It's implied earlier in the movie, when his lady hits him or he is in other ways hit by stuff that would definitely injure a normal person, but he just ignores it or pretends to be knocked out.
So, it's definitely not as flashy as some other techniques seen in that movie, but it's definitely a special technique he is using. (Alongside being obviously skilled in actual Kung Fu as well.)
It's Taichi and he is a master of it. It's the technique of deflecting or redirecting the energy of the blows of the attackers against them. Obviously, Stephen took liberties to exaggerate the actual art but it's real. Stephen Chow even purposefully draws the Ying Yang symbol on the ground to drive the point home.
