As an immigrant raised in old world Indonesia, I can confirm that the older an Asian woman gets the more powerful their voice gets and the scarier they become.
Seems legit 👌
You are not wrong
Wanita asia memang kya gitu semua.... mau asia timur, asia tengah bahkan asia tenggara pun sama saja mlh lebih parah🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s why I’m terrified of my grandmother and mother
Wkwkwk so true... 😂
The part when the lovers enter the fight is pure genius writing. When she’s just in the car and how scared they are is top tier creative.
The lovers?
Paris and Helen. The older couple have many legendary names mentioned briefly in the movie.
@@SuperEagle112 Ah. Wierd to think of them as "the lovers", though I suppose they would technically be if they are unmarried.

The guy is pure geniis
That’s what I’m saying. Badassery combined with gold comedy and genius plot
Not only that, the movie had a backstory, a love plot, fighting sequence, the rise of a hero, more than 5 introduction and NONE OF IT fell out of place

This is arguably the coolest plot twist EVER. I remembered being so hyped knowing they are masters all along
You see them survive things like falling out a window and just chalk it up to the humor. Very good twist
Yes we all thought everyone has cartoon physics but turns out only the masters do. 🤣
Great plot twist for sure for foreign audiences. This was Stephen Chow's work for global audiences.

This was truly what a 'live-action anime' should look like. The cartoonish aspects blend in so well, the flow is perfect, with an atypical protagonist who's a thief who DOESN'T have a heart of gold.
He had a heart of gold in the beginning when he tried to defend the deaf girl and the boys took a piss on him. Society made him a douche, but in the end he came back to his younger, pure self.
I never had the thought before, but you're totally right. This is what a live-action anime should be like.
@@TheBrotherdarkness9 😚👥😛🙂

6:08 One of the most badass entrance for me, so subtle, yet so powerful. The nature of his kung fu does not put out flashy effect or intimidating pose, he just literally "put them back in their place" lol. This combined with the roar right before is a oh shit moment when you realized that most of the comedic effects from the couple (the husband felt from third floor with a pot right into his head, or the wife run like a fricking looney cartoon) is actually their real skill.
it took a few times but did you notice the complete silence to his moves? they added no sound to him (at least in this fight) until the dual kicks they landed and if you had told me he was asleep until then I'd believe you.
99.9% of the sound were from the dudes, and any from him were his spinning them around until the roar.
then all you could hear was her
Fascinating cause no other character like him has ever been seen
Their hard set back down, compared to the landlord's soft landing, is also masterful visual story telling.
Here's another one for you:
Rewatch the end fight, as he does the palm strike from the sky, afterward. Guy gives up, tries to sneak attack him, fails, and in that moment the camera shifts. We see the hero from the Beast's point of view (and that's very important). From his view he's shadowed out and black, you can't tell any of his features. The hero has grown so far beyond the villain, from his view, he can't even see the hero anymore, and the realization drops the beast to his knees, sobbing.
The short moment of PURE silence once he landed *-*
9:23 is this reference to Bruce Lee in way of the dragon i seriously never noticed
So underrated how the guy balances the instrument on his leg, this whole movie is easily top 5 because you can watch it over and over and still be interested 💯
Balances and they sit on air the entire time. That was the creepy part. That’s how you know these guys are dangerous.

It's basic visual comedy (explained in "Funny Business - part 1 with Rowan Atkinson, 1992") done very well.
She literally said with her hand gestures that
"You? You're nothing. Try us once again, and we'll crush your balls and with no efforts at all. So don't f with us."

@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
The fact that the guy was balancing on one leg while using the other to keep his instrument steady impresses me to no end. If it IS possible to commit such a feat in real life, they'd have to have damn good balance.
It is but it take incredible leg power to stay up that long 😂
@@Unknown13thorder That too.
Another fact: the guy that played the landladies husband worked a lot with Bruce Lee.

This was a beautifully shot movie. The poetic way the spear master moves as he fights his way forward is brilliant, it almost looks like he was dancing and having a grand time! One of my favorite scenes in the movie and that's saying alot because the entire move is awesome!
His name is Yang Guo. Yang Guo is a character in Condor Heroes. Condor Heroes is a Chinese novel released in 1959. This film is a parody of Chinese novels
@@Yangpeiling-de-zhangfu Rio was referring to the spear master not the taichi master. and yes i do think non-Chinese are missing a deeper layer of comedy hidden in their names 杨过 and 小龙女 that makes me love this movie so much because i love 金庸 novels
This is not dancing but a common action often played by warrior characters in traditional Chinese operas.
@thfchris I know that it's not actual dancing. I was referring to his graceful movements and the ease in which he does them
6:55 The CGI aged beautiful than the current MCU and Disney as a whole LOL
Another detail I love is 6:10 is how the harpists land with the sort of sound you'd expect, and the Landlord lands completely silently...
This film is a gem, one of the few films that introduces not just the villain but each individual hero perfectly, we are not automatically told to believe these villains are evil, we are SHOWN how evil by how easily they dispatch the selfless yet capable 1st hero, followed by an epicly orchestrated clash blending the music and "cartoon" animations together so well, it only immerses you more.
In the end the during the car scene interaction was so damn hilarious. The clark shouts 'Don't you have any manners" I cried loud.
This is the greatest “scream” attack on screen ever. There’s superhero films and horror films etc. but this is the best interpretation of a sonic attack in a movie.
I always get goosebumps at the mix of choreography & music @ 4:15 definitely art in motion.
9:23 I know what she said. She said: “One condition… never come back… if you don’t… you will face her fury that you will never forget… you got that!”
After he nodded “yes”. When she place her thumb under her nose, she said: “Good!”
Actually she was saying: “👆You ☝️are not 👍my 🤜🏼🤛opponent”. Meaning: you are no match for me.
The word opponent is translated in Chinese as 对手(duì shǒu). Literally it means “opposing(对) hands(手). So she used this gesture 🤜🏼🤛 to express “opponent”.
@@angelhero89I guess it makes sense

These movies are also great because they give secondary characters special treatment , quality time on screen and they just surprise the audience . They kick ass and are funny as hell . They become memorable . Besides everything else already said .
The way they just appear in the car never fails to crack me up
I love how the mob boss keeps slapping the shit out of his assistant for getting in the way.
3:36 idk why but his deep breathe in gets me everytime. It's the "I know how this is going go end but I'm going for it." Feel
Looking at this whole scene again, it just finally crossed my mind that the landlady was giving them chances to escape while distracting the assassins. Just like how they escaped the beast with just a few seconds of distraction
But the 2 kungfu masters were too eager to fight. Maybe thinking they had a chance to win
not too eager , but just want the harrassment in the village to end
They should have shown the last bit were the secretary lights a cigar to his boss 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kung Fu Hustle is my favorite movie of all time. And I don't say that lightly. The omage to the Chinese fighting history, the choreography, the humor, and the over the top fights are what make this movie beyond phenomenal. It is so damn good! ❤😢

This will always be legendary. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid with my neighbors. It was fun reminiscing those days where we all get together just watching and laughing, sitting beside each other.
6:18 the fighting style of this guy almost reminds me of drunken style fighting
It's actually taichi chuan
19 years later and there still hasn't been a female character that comes close to being as badass as the Landlady.
This is probably hands down one of the best fight scenes ever made.
I will ALWAYS applaud Stephen Chow to shove this sound effect in such a serious fight 😂😂😂 3:16
The spear fight against the music is a masterful art performance that generates extreme emotions from both spectrums of the human soul. That actor was perfect for that part.
7:26 ngl the way he tossing them cracked me up..
I love the incorporation of so many different feelings from classical chinese music shown by the zither players over their two appearances playing. Its like if you could combine the presence of "ambush on ten sides" the history and feeling of "the conqueror unarms" and the momentum of "King Chu doffs his armor" into a single building movement. Beautifully done by whoever composed.
I always laugh at the landlord's "tonchi tonchi, mossi mossi"...I remember I watched this movie in the theatre by mistake but it was the best mistake of my life.
haha, you can speak Japanese dont you
All of the characters have distinct and fun styles that I love to see more of. Those assassins were creepy and intimidating beyond belief.
I can't believe I forgot about this childhood masterpiece... I need to watch it again like yesterday
There was actually some character development after this scene. As Donut was dying, he told the landlord and landlady that he never saw such a powerful technique exist like Lion Roar. The Landlady apologised for being too passive and not interfering early to save their lives because their son passed away and they preferred to lead a quiet life instead of showing off as martial artists. Donut said something like having great power meant that you could not run away from your responsibilities to protect others when innocent people were in need of your help. The three masters (coolie, donut, tailor) gave the landlords a lot of courage, despite being much weaker than them. After all, they were the first ones to stand up to the Axe Gang. Because of that, the landlords made the life-or-death decision to confront the Axe gang directly in their home territory and even faced the Beast. Their relationship also improved after that (previously, the male landlord was a huge pervert who liked to explore other ladies’ bodies).
7:15
Its the look she gives
This movie was SO refreshing to see when it came out. It's still my fave example of a perfect movie. The heroes don't look like stereotypical heroes--heck, they don't even look like they could physically handle being heroes. Not only that, but it's very hard to predict how the plot will progress. Sure, there are some things that you can assume ("ooh, evil gang is gonna get pwned by 'hero' ")--but how it's gonna get there (and who is gonna get it along the way) is VERY hard to tell. Not only that, but it's FUN and silly while also having moments of unexpected sh*t getting real. Just, absolutely perfect.
I loved how the only source of music that comes from this battle is the music that is played by the harpist. That was until when the landlord stepped in and the music stopped and played another theme indicating that the assassins are facing strong opponents.
That terrific touch at the end where she does the impression of Bruce Lee in Way Of The Dragon. Flawless film. Saw it on the big screen at Leicester Square.
So funny, and so impressive at the same time. When it comes to power, so many get caught up in the two options fear, or respect, and some want both. This couple have something else, love and respect, both laughter and amazment can be had at the same time with them.
00:05:38 just hits different once you know the masters are just holding down because of an old promise, but keep getting pushed by the goons. They know the axe gang is just fodder for them but try to stay aside til the last moment.
This movie is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only is it funny as well, but the story behind it is amazing.
My favourite part 5:18 So badass and funny at the same time
I remember when this came out it was the only movie I'd seen that successfully captures the over-the-top fights and characters you see in anime. It *still* might be the best. Same goes for Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a master at mixing comic book-esque characters with wuxia style aciton.
7:50 When you know “It’s about to get real”
This movie may have been intended as a comedy, but it was an absolute work of art.
Gotta low how since the lovers made an oath never to fight again the first time Landlord actually fights he is doing it so effortlessly, using the foes themselves to inflict damage on eachother. He doesn't use any special tricks like during the Beast fight, he just puts them down in the most peaceful taoist way possible
Eh, no, his special trick is exactly the deflecting of blows. Likewise, he makes no sound when touching the ground, and after they bounce him off, you can see that his motions seem more in line with a floating piece of paper, rather than a physical object. I'm not certain of the actual name, but you could describe it as 'Ragdoll technique'. It's implied earlier in the movie, when his lady hits him or he is in other ways hit by stuff that would definitely injure a normal person, but he just ignores it or pretends to be knocked out.
So, it's definitely not as flashy as some other techniques seen in that movie, but it's definitely a special technique he is using. (Alongside being obviously skilled in actual Kung Fu as well.)
It's Taichi and he is a master of it. It's the technique of deflecting or redirecting the energy of the blows of the attackers against them. Obviously, Stephen took liberties to exaggerate the actual art but it's real. Stephen Chow even purposefully draws the Ying Yang symbol on the ground to drive the point home.
@@skim2958 That is only yin part of taichi. It also has the yang part, one of the strongest blow in chinese marterial art

Love how waves of sound from music is visualised as lethal weapon. Also, I love how Taichi is represented here. Even a skinny, seamingly weak man can out power simply by deflecting or reflecting forces. He never initiates attack, so peaceful and effortless.
People will mostly praise the action and comedy, but the deaths here are so emotional, including the next scene where they hear the last words of the spear master.
A tapestry of exquisite comedy interwoven with creative action. I will forever be in love with the idea of everyday things being used as superpowers, like:
