This is my fave scene in the movie, because it is so beautifully choreography like a game of chess and a dance, like rhythmic poetry vs bursts of gunfire-quick verbal rap. There is a deeper meaning of the styles that correlates to the masters temperaments and their "perception" of Wing Chun. So, that is very insightful of you to be able to spot Master Zhuang's attitude, which is more humble and gentle, because BaGuaZhang's philosophy is about that, and gathering forces for defense and attack -- notice how he would rally the other masters to go first, and also ask if Master "dick" Luo is okay! (master Luo seriously disliked Ip Man, so it is natural Master Zhang would tell Master Luo to go head on, because that is how you neutralize 2 opposing forces, and this table-battle was stirred up by Master Luo in the first place) So, yes, it has to do with the deeper meaning in the philosophy of the styles that each of the masters practice, And Master Zhang was kinda pressured into the fight, while he preferred to just co-exist. If anything, his heart really isn't in the fight but is forced to do so, because of the fear of "losing face". As for Master Hung's Hung Gah Fists (incorporating Tiger Claw) are aggressive, forms preference is attack and alot of external force used aim is to capture and dominate -- and we can see Master Hung's Alpha Male attitude. Master Zhang is a Bagua Palm master -- so it is about Internal energy and Balance with odd-angled attacks, that Ip Man had a hard time blocking, notice how Ip Man keeps tilting from side to side to receive and block the Bagua attacks because Wing Chun attacks and blocks are always linear as the form is called "shouzhong" - guarding the center -- beautiful to watch -- But the truth is that the movie is trying to showcase WingChun, if not Philosophical/Internal Energy duel-wise Taichi&Bagua are the 2 penultimate forms, but they aren't necessarily overtly aggressive like Xing Yi or Hung Gah. The philosophy of Bagua is like TaiChi is more aligned with the "be like water", and Wing Chun's thoughtful style is originated by a Chinese Buddhist Nun, and taught to her female disciple named "Wing Chun" -- the style favours "unassumed"ness, low-key but effective strikes, using your attacker's energy to enhance your own when you can ( mostly center of gravity shifts -- see how ip man always ground the 2 masters), it does not have beautiful flourishes and tracery of lines of forces but it is direct short bursts -- which is why it is spectacular when choreographed with the likes of Hung Gar and Xingyi. Bagua would be a play of gathering chi in the air (gaining momentum before strike vs muscular explosive force) and can be very devastating, like the Yin-Yang symbol, it has 2 sides, Yin and Yang of both palms and fists, and it seems Master Zhang here is more of the Yin palms -- you can the actor knows his forms because of his foot work, the cross legged spins to generate momentum for his palm-edge strikes, the versatility in his vertical movement and even his krav-magra style ensnarement before Ip Man threw him down and voila-- LOCK MASTER ZHUANG'S LEGS BECAUSE IP MAN CAN TELL HOW THE FORCE FROM HIS FOOTWORK CAN GENERATE FORCES FOR HIS PALM ATTACKS TOWARDS HIM-- and delivered the punches, and that ended the fight, so, it shows Ip Man is able to attack in a strategic and very astute and wise manner. . My favorite scene is right after Ip Man leaves. He is like a piece of iron." except his acting was so good, he didn't need words.
I love how the way Ip Man approaches the table matches his character. He jumps to a waist height table so effortlessly and so softly that it barely moves the table despite the actual amount of force required to jump that high normally. Despite it being the least flashy of the methods to get onto the the tabletop, I argue it was the most impressive and really shows the level and character that Donnie Yen was portraying. He didn't need to jump on chair legs and fly through the air, he just jumped up with a combination of power and grace; it perfectly fits the character.
It also fits the philosophy of Wing Chun: No flashy moves, no wasted energy, just those most direct and efficient way to your goal. Donnie has great kicks of course, but he dials it down to show real Wing Chun moves, and yet it still looks really impressive.
You mean aesthetically pleasing fit? @@iwishiwasthomasshelbyI tried to look for CGI articles explaining this scene but haven't found anything indicating the film had CGI at all. The most we can assume from this scene at a glance is the use of wire tricks. I found this on Wikipedia, which earned him respect from me. "The film's martial arts sequences were choreographed by Sammo Hung, who also worked on the choreography for the first film. Prior to principal photography, Hung had undergone a major cardiac surgery. When he returned to the set, his dramatic scenes in the film were filmed first, with his fight sequences being filmed last. @@kamui600 it doesn’t matter if Donnie is using it. He has to coordinate the fights with his counterpart. For example, you mean you think he actually fought Mike Tyson straight up? They choreographed it, because in a real life, him taking a solid blow to the head by Mike would have been done. Also, two thing like Mike shattered all that glass bare fist? He’ll that was Agci.
Yes must be some strong wires lifting him up with all the wire work going on in this clip which personally i hate, don’t need it MA movies can be just as good without it, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan showed this.
@@garypayne4284 Most of Bruce Lee & Jacki Chan's movies DO have wire work. Any time a jump takes more than ~0.1 seconds, they're using wires or playing with the frame rate. IMO it's a staple for Hong Kong movies, so much so that it's as much a part of the trope as the bad dubbing.

Yes, it was a lovely little exchange that highlighted the intricacies and nuances of human language. The first time Master Luo says it, he's basically doing it to save face after getting his ass absolutely handed to him. The second time, it's an between-the-lines warning to his friend that Ip Man is REALLY good and that Master Cheng/Zhang needs to be careful. @@davidchen574 its character development for ip man, otherwise ip man wouldnt bother to fight twister. But hung really wants to protect the pride of those racism against chinese, so its understandable
Ip Man is one of my absolute favourite films, including 2 and 3 story aside it’s fight scenes are awesome and intricate, Donnie Yen killed it as Ip man ❤
one of the big things in this film is the emphasis on manners, etiquette and respect between those fighting the other. there is grace and dignity - see how ip man does not actually injure the men and stop short, showing just enough to let them know what he can do. he says 'thank you for going easy on me'. this brings stark contrast to the english boxers rudeness, brutality and lack of respect. when he kills the master in the fight it is the biggest insult- this would not have happened between two martial artists.
A minor correction: it's not "he is not supposed to touch the ground", even though the word "ground" is technically there. The sentence roughly means "seems like an average Joe".
What I think still amazes me about this fight is the fact that even to this day, Master Hong is the only true equal to Ip Man we've ever seen. It was only ever due to his age and illness that he lost to Twister, otherwise he might have dealt with him even better than Ip Man did... And ultimately, that's what makes Ip Man's victory against Twister all the sweeter; He didn't prove himself 'better' than Master Hong. He simply proved himself to be his successor, the one to carry forth the flaming torch of his spirit and passion for martial arts.
@@digitalcamaro9708 All of them except Master Luo. A real Kung Fu specialist wouldn't go into battle the way he did. Master Luo is a comedic relief character with numerous running gags. Yes, those rapid fire punches are a signature, but we rarely see them actually having much impact on the opponent. If they are powerful enough, they don't just block the opponent's ability to strike and freeze him but also do some real damage if they connect.
Seeing Sammo Hung takes me back to being a kid when my friends and I would spend Saturday afternoons at the movies watching whatever martial arts movie was out at the time
I really love this very small detail at 6:09 You can distinctly hear the sound of a tiger as the master takes his stance. It's subtle, but really good.
I like better Ip Man's 'Thank you for going easy on me', when he defeats the guy. This is a true element of Chinese culture, about respect and 'saving face'. He defeated the guy, but then stated it was because the guy 'went easy on him', this 'saved his face', or in other words, saved his honour. They do the same thing in other areas of life. For example when a board in company has to make a decision, everyone agree, and when the decision turns out to be wrong, everyone blame themselves, so there are no scapegoats.
@@piotrmalewski8178 I find saying "thank you for going easy on me" incredibly patronizing, at least when it is so damn obvious that this wasn't what happened. Not only does he insult the other persons intelligence by uttering such an obvious lie, but he also talks down to him as if he is a child that cannot accept defeat and needs to have his ego placated with such nonsense.
@@alaron5698 That's your interpretation, but obviously that's not what would have happened among them. Note he says the same thing in the beginning to all the masters, but there's nothing rude or provocative in his behaviour. He bows his head and makes a sign of respect. In Chinese culture people are deeply apologetic, and try to save the other person's face in any way possible, even if that sounds nonsensical. Thus in this declaration Ip Man didn't win because he was better, but because the master let him win. There's a lot things like that. For example if you get invited to see someone in their house, and the host's Canary (bird) shits on your shirt, the host will obviously apologise you, but a Chinese person will respond something like; 'I'm happy that your Canary has honoured me.' It's sounds absurd to us, but it's a way of 'saving face', and showing appreciation that another person actually wanted to see us at all. If you think about, in the end the bird wouldn't have shit on your shirt if you weren't invited, so in the end it is an honour anyway. There's a lot of things in Chinese culture that for Westerners seem rude or even absurd, but actually signify politeness. And it's not like that only when we discuss differences between very distant countries. Let's take Europe for example. For example British people see Polish as rude, and for Polish person, British' behaviour can be provocative and disrespectful. When I went to the UK, they were things that surprised me, and up to this day I get angry about things although I know people don't mean anything wrong, but it's not that easy to get used to something when your whole life it would be a sign of disrespect or even a provocation.
@@piotrmalewski8178 For me, saying "thank you for going easy on me" is just on another level of disingenousness to saying "I'm happy your bird honored me". The bird is obviously an accident, and it makes perfect sense to make as little out of it as possible, especially if it can be done in a humorous way. Thanking the person that defeated you in the way Ip Man does on the other hand, seems SO disingenuous that it actually becomes insulting, and I'm not convinced that the Chinese would really take that as a good thing, as surely they also have a concept of being patronized. But I can't speak with confidence in this.
The student that notifies master Hung about Ip Man's arrival is Dennis To, the one to play young Ip Man years later in several Ip Man movies. I can't believe I didn't notice him up until now.
I remember thinking Master Hong was a asshole but omg now that Im older he is one of my Favorites Now My small brain can finally Understand whats going on and everything lol
Every culture teaches us to be respectful to weak, powerful, elder, friends and even enemies. Something that we have forgotten not only for enemies but also for our loved ones.
Master Cheng was using the Baguazhang (translated as "eight trigram palm") style. The style is a "soft" style that, like Wing Chun, focuses more on reacting to opponent's actions and using momentum and circular strokes for counters and throws. The actor playing Master Cheng was doing those moves a lot slower than a real exponent would have done them (likely so we, the audience, can see it better), but generally those sorts of moves are done as calculated baits to lure the opponent into attacking so that you can respond with throws and strikes coming in from odd angles.
Ip Man 1 and Ip Man 2 started with the right action director, Sammo Hung. The hand fighting choreography in these 2 movies no one can do it better than Sammo Hung. is a good foundation, and I don't think there is anyone can execute/perform it better than Donnie Yen.
I’ve watched this fight scenes so many times I have lost count. But I still loved it - a masterpiece! The filmmaker really set the scene of Hong Kong from that era with those wooden furnitures; the ceiling fans and the clothings.

For example when a board in company has to make a decision, everyone agree, and when the decision turns out to be wrong, everyone blame themselves, so there are no scapegoats.
are you sure?

Gotta love that "Turn your back on your enemy and trust he's honorable" stance switch the second guy had.
