Right before he does, we see the hero from frog man's point of view. Shadowed out and black from the sunset, but the symbology is that the hero has advanced so far that the villain _can't even see him anymore!_ The same dude whose senses were so attuned that he could detect the presence of the "Fabled Lovers" in a crowded room, an entire room away, but now he can't even clearly see this one person right in front of him, *that* is the level of skill the hero is operating on.

just to add a note for those not with a Chinese culture background. "lion roar" is informally referred to the yelling from a wife like a lion, when she is mad, angry, or want to bully the husband. It matches the female master role in the movie perfectly.

Three reasons why the protagonist hits the beast.
1, The protagonist was always pretend to be a bad guy because he was shamed on himself when he failed to be a good man.
2, 1:34 Real meaning from landlady is "If someone have to sacrifice himself for the justice, I would rather be that one" (The original translation in subtitle is not accurate. ). After hearing this, the protagonist's righteous mind has been ignited.
3, He saw the beast surprisingly attack landlord/landlady after surrender, which is pretty shameless behavior.
As a consequence, he tried to help the landlady/landloard by hitting the beast. Even he knew very well it is useless, but he is showing his attitude that he is be on the righteous side.

this was the last great film ever made by Stephen Chow. After that it was all crappy CGI films that are hard to swallow.
In order to survive he had to depend on the Chinese Market, but I feel that if he goes back to his roots and continue to make his kind of film, it would be amazing, but then again the last great group of actors, the 3 kung fu masters in this clip, are all really old by now, at least close to 70s, they are all proper martials arts practitioners, some of them had even worked with Bruce Lee before. So you will no longer get the great kung fu films like young Jackie Chan, young Jet Li or even the martial artists depicted in this film anymore.
but hopefully a new generation of proper martial artists can be discovered and we can get more of this kind of films.

There's a joke here at 7:16 that got lost in translation
The Boss at first told Sing to “郁佢啊” which means "hit him"
then at the second sentence he also says "郁佢老妈啊“ which directly translates to "hit his mother" but in a cultural context it's a common way to emphasise something in a rude way which can be translated as to "fucking hit him" but Sing probably only gets the transliteration part for some reason which is why he got confused and ask "do you want me to hit him or hit his mother? you're making me confused"

One thing I want to add for non-Mandarin speakers is how poetic the gift of the bell is at 1:07. Bell in Mandarin is 鐘, pronounced zhong. It is the same pronunciation as 終, which means "end", or another nice way of saying "death". So to give them the gift of a bell is basically a declaration of their death.

  • @somanken
    @somanken 9 месяцев назад +31

I love the fact that both sides "win" this fight in their own way, neither one by actually being more individually powerful or just "stronger". (even if the beast is the strongest single character in the scene)
The Couple win by working together, using their best skills to counter the beast long enough to do damage to him.
The Beast wins by feigning surrender and pulling a hidden trick.
Goods win through cooperation while evil wins with trickery, neither one is shown to be truly stronger than the other in this scene, its what I love about it.

What I really love about this movie is the body language and facial expressions. The actors deliver it so well. Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan as the axe gang leader has so many great scenes although feeling like a background character. Also like his way of talking.

It bears reminding that "Helen of Troy" fights while also smoking. The first time you meet her, she's doing her hair and collecting rent. The second time you meet her, she's trying to wind down for bed. She NEVER wants to be inconvenienced for things like gang violence. She's basically trying to enjoy her early retirement.
Helen and Paris are just two lovers trying to live their lives peacefully. They are also metaphors for the trials of marriage: the man must be ready to compromise and support his woman, the woman must remain strong for the man. Their Kung Fu styles also mirror this: he's flexible and can divert force with his body, she uses her grounded and explosive force to blow problems away. Woman's fury supported by a man's flexibility creates a strong team with few weak spots. So when they fight, they are also very well coordinated--like in marriage. Neither is stronger than the other.
You notice how Paris never gets angry when she hits him. He just laughs it off and continues to defend her.

Actually the translation took a liberty for the fictional characters' names here. In the original Cantonese, the landlord and landlady's monikers are Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü, two characters from the novel Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. They are teacher-and-student-turned-lovers (Xiaolongnü, literally meaning dragon maiden, is several years older than Yang Guo and also his teacher/mentor) and the novel depicts how their innocent love and affection for each other grows and how they overcome the prejudices and hurdles to come together at the end, even after a 16-year separation during which Yang Guo thought that Xiaolongnü was already dead. The monikers were also an irony, as Xiaolongnü is described as an ethereal, fairy-like figure and Yang Guo as strikingly handsome, which both the landlord and landlady apparently are not.

I like the moral of this story :
    1. The Gang attack Pig Sty Alley because Steven and his fat friends started it
    2. The 3 men in disguise, The Coolie, The Chef, and the Tailor step in to help the denizen from being killed by the Gang
    3. The Gang wants revenge and hired Assassin's, the Harpist to killed the 3 kung fu master.
    4. The Land Lord who vow to never fights and lived in peace, forced to step in to help fight the Harpist, but they were too late to save the Coolie, the Chef, and the Tailor, they all died from fighting the Harpist.
    5. The Gang still want revenge, freed the Beast from Mental Asylum Prison to kill the Landlords.
    6. Steven then step in and clean his own mistake by starting this war, protect Pig Sty Alley, Defeat the Beast, and make peace with him.
There's so much to learn :
    1. Revenge will only breed chain of hatred - Destruction - Vengeance. In the end innocent people died.
    2. It takes only a small pebble to create an avalanche, just because Steven stupidity, he created a war ...
    3. Oil and Water will never mix, the good and the bad people can't coexist.
    4. Money, Booze, Women, Power, all of this doesn't matter when you are close to death. See when Steven almost died from the beast Attack he draw a candy.... all he wants is to protect and to be with the girl he loves, his dream to be on the bad side because he thinks bad people always winning .... deep down he knows he never truly wants to be bad.
    5. You have to clean your own mistake, Steven start this war, he finish it, he ends it.
    6. Great Power comes with Great Responsibility.

I am a Taiwanese, let me explain what is the meaning of sending that 'horn'. The horn is the bell in a traditional temple. The word "bell" is the same as the Chinese word "The End". To send a person a bell (that is, the horn, or the clock) means to ask him to die. Stephen's film has a lot of "localized" dialogues and details, especially filled with a lot of Hong Kong Cantonese, if you can't understand the meaning, you will often lose many interesting points.

The translation says "Paris and Helen of Troy", the famous couple from the greek epic of Trojan War
But what they actually says was "Yang Guo and Xiaoliongnu" which is the famous couple from Chinese martial arts novel "Return of the condor heroes", the 2nd novel from the condor trilogy by Lois Cha
The differences is that their special moves which is the Taiji and the Lion's roar are attributed to another characters, Lion's roar is the signature move of Xie Xun the golden lion from Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre novel which is the 3rd part of the Condor trilogy, and the Taiji is the move from Zhangsanfeng the founder of wudang in the same novel
And what's ironic os that the killer beast's signature technique which is the toad skill is actually the signature move of Ouyang feng who is Yang guo's godfather
