  • In this episode we head out in search of Goliath Grouper. Usually Goliath Grouper are prohibited to harvest but FWC ran a lottery tag system for the harvesting of recreationally caught goliath grouper for 2023. My buddy Taylor was lucky enough to get a tag so we set out with the goal to catch clean and cook a goliath grouper in the 24"-36" slot size. We caught a bunch of Goliath grouper this day and fortunately got one that we were able to take back home and eat for dinner! We also battled bull sharks, permit, jacks, cobia and a few other species of fish! Enjoy!

    I’ve only seen one. In 1975, I hand lined a 463lb 97in monster off the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Epic. Weighed it at the boat dock and had an inspection by a couple of Enforcement Officers. Had it under a tarp. They thought we had bales of pot. Scared the snot out of em when we threw the tarp back. Drove into Tampa to show Salty Sol!

    Growing up in Key West we ate jewfish a lot in the 70's and early 80's. A lot of the old conchs would soak the fillets in milk to take out the briny flavor and soften the meat. Also, cut the fillets into thinner steaks instead of chunks like a black or red grouper technique.

    I agree with you that the sharks are really a huge problem. I fish out of Bud and Mary's almost monthly, and have fished the same spot in the gulf. Was there a few weeks ago, actually. Losing too many nice fish, such as Permit and Goliaths to Bulls and Lemons. Wish something could be done.

      I fish the 7 mile bridge and have a secret piling I catch 18in mutton’s consistently. The problem is there is a bull shark I’ve named that I believe knows the color of my boat who sits and waits underneath and it’s a dueling competition between him an I. He wins most of the time.

    Nothing like catching 300 lb fish with the drag all the way buttoned down on the heaviest tackle available. It's you vs. The fish. And when it's strong enough to drag the boat you know how hard it's gonna be.

    I have a question about the harvest rule. Does it mean that you're allowed to fish for Goliath's catch-n-release or are you just straight up not allowed to fish for them?

    • @StanzFam
      @StanzFam  Год назад +3

      Usually can’t harvest them, but lots of people catch and release them throughout the year

    • @rytime700
      @rytime700 Год назад +3

      You've always been allowed to catch them in florida waters.....its not illegal to fish for them....just to keep them....and there are specific rules to catch n release golitahs......esp the big ones....you are not suppose to take them out of the water and you have to take any pics super fast and release immediately!
