I read that Judy said that while making this movie was the only time she felt beautiful. So sad how her life ended after all the joy she brought to millions by way of her talent . She deserved better.
I think she said that she was true first in her life she beautiful (I would have to disagree she looked beautiful in many films before and after this one), but after that she still felt beautiful. I remember reading a story about her and one day in her 30’s she broke down crying in her dressing room and said: “I’ve lost my beauty,” after looking at herself in the mirror.
So, before she was even twenty-two years old, she'd made what are considered by many to be two of the greatest movies ever made. That's something to think about.

She is so inspiring to me, I am 22 and I hear this Song every single Day. It’s 05:00 am in the Morning here in Germany and nothing is better, then starting the Day with the best Lovesong that was ever created.
Look at how Judy Garland commands the scene while wearing black and white. She easily outshined the other actors even though they were wearing more vibrant colors.
Notice how she's the only one without a hat, her long strawberry blonde hair contrasted against the black and white with her in the centre of each shot forces your eyes upon her as her powerful voice dominates. This would have been painstakingly thought out and choreographed, each passengers costume carefully chosen to keep your attention on Judy while the story plays out. It's all very well done.
Wearing a non color (Black or White) sucks all the attention to the wearer. Many top actors in their contracts demand they not share a scene with another actor wearing Black or/and White.
I agree with shouting horse. Also, if you look at her hair and costume, they were VERY fashionable in 1944, whereas all the other women are dressed in Edwardian clothes, which is the period in which the film was set. It all combines to make Garland the most attractive woman to a 1940s audience.
Judy was prettier than she thought. Vincente really made her sparkle. I don't think I've ever seen her prettier or happier than in MMISL. Definitely one of her peaks of her life, and another monster hit for her career (film and song).

The orchestrations, the timing, choreography, everything about this sequence is perfect...and man was Judy a great lipsync'er...right on the beat of the soundtrack. And the genius of her facial expressions and body language throughout. What a professional. She will never be adequately appreciated for what she brought to American culture. Vincente Minelli clearly loved her and was a genius at framing her. God Rest her beautiful soul.
One of the greatest vocalist ever❤️I always loved this song! Hard to believe that it took only one ‘take’. Nothing compares today. She was so beautiful and talented, but the studio executives treated her like dirt 😢
He was truly gifted, and in a big way. The kaleidoscopic color and the composition in every scene in this movie is breathtaking. She's wearing dark clothing (except her collar, which frames her face) and no hat, while everyone around her has a hat (even the men) and are wearing bright, colorful clothing. In spite of his being gay, he had to be in love with her to call so much attention to her in a role that, at the beginning, was not considered a lead.
Watch it again and you realise that as soon as Judy starts singing, her performance is nearly ONE TAKE. It only cuts to another angle near the end. Her performance is outstanding as she just seems to glide withing the frame. Watch her face and interactions as she sings. That's a star.
I've read that Judy Garland loved hanging around beautiful women because she thought that it would rub off on her somehow (even though she herself was already gorgeous). Instead of being catty she embraced them. I say this because she does a double take towards the extra in the light purple dress at 1:56, who is very pretty, as if she wasn't expecting to see her there. I can just tell in her eyes from that point on how much she was enjoying being part of the "beautiful girls" because of the way she was treated off screen by people who never recognized her own stunning looks. In fact, its said that she married Minelli because of how beautiful he made her look and feel during the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis. It's very cute but very sad at the same time.

This took one take for her to sing. Also she met her future husband doing this film, she said she felt beautiful during this and with him. She was only 21 years old here. Its incredible!!
Pure happiness! Not only is Judy Garland the ultimate performer, classy and beautiful, but the music, itself, is wonderful. The horns are simply dazzling in the beginning, and elsewhere, as are the violins,;and wonderfully intertwined with the human voice. They sure don't write music like this anymore!
My father sang on this soundtrack. I’m so thankful to have come across this, and that the quality is good enough that I can still single out his voice. Thank you TCM for posting this. Love & miss you, dad!💜
I am not an expert like some, but that is the most elaborate musical arrangement of any movie show tune I can think of. And the short musical flourishes after most lines anticipate the "wall of sound" style of the early 1960's. With Judy's singing that is an incredible sequence.
I never noticed the little detail of the candy or peanut bag (not sure which) before. It starts at 0:56 when Esther sits on the bench between the two girls.
Notice how Judy is dressed in dark colors and everyone else is very colorful. But all the attention is drawn to her. That’s the result of a great costume designer and a charismatic super star. ❤️✨
That was intentional. It called misc-en-scene. The black dress us to contrast with other colorful dresses (colorful to advertise technicolor) and draw attention to the star amongst the crowd. It is not unique, just a basic technique that was used in the early cinema era till today. The reason why you don't see that often today is because soft-focus close up and rditing became much easier with better camera. That being said, it added a lot to the scene. One of my favorite scene in old Hollywood.
This song is 80 years old this year-can you believe it? I love Judy; she was one of the best! I will always have a special place for her in my heart . ❤❤ "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" still gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. ❤❤
I love this film so much! I especially love that, unlike other producers and directors she worked with, Vincente Minnelli let Judy Garland be herself; no painful nose discs and no false teeth, just Judy in all her natural beauty. ❤️

The same! I was born in 2004 I just love movies and songs from the past like this, I love Judy Garland!
Pure happiness! Not only is Judy Garland the ultimate performer, classy and beautiful, but the music, itself, is wonderful. The horns are simply dazzling in the beginning, and elsewhere, as are the violins,;and wonderfully intertwined with the human voice. They sure don't write music like this anymore!
we're so blessed to have had her
My father sang on this soundtrack. I’m so thankful to have come across this, and that the quality is good enough that I can still single out his voice. Thank you TCM for posting this. Love & miss you, dad!💜
wow thats so cuteeee
She looked so beautiful in this. Voice was at its peak and comedic choices was on point. She was honestly a delight on screen.
The costumes were beautiful!
I am not an expert like some, but that is the most elaborate musical arrangement of any movie show tune I can think of. And the short musical flourishes after most lines anticipate the "wall of sound" style of the early 1960's. With Judy's singing that is an incredible sequence.
yet so simple is, almost, 4 minutes of pure art
I never noticed the little detail of the candy or peanut bag (not sure which) before. It starts at 0:56 when Esther sits on the bench between the two girls.
She is so beautiful and her voice is too
What a voice,if she was around now she,d be without doubt a superstar, long live Dorothy 😊
I love this movie!
The golden age of hollywood movies
I love this song!!!
I would love to see someone do a modern rendition for American idol or The Voice with this classic ❤
It is just amazing. It is just like she has a spotlight on her. Your eyes just stay with her every movement, and phrasing, and expression.
I start paying attention when Judy does her solo. What a voice ❤
She’s also the only girl without a hat.
The Trolley Song from Meet Me In St. Louis is just terrific. Hollywood does not make films like this anymore.
listening to this instead of doing homework. no regrets
Gawd, this picture is just so wonderful on so many levels.
This song is 80 years old this year-can you believe it? I love Judy; she was one of the best! I will always have a special place for her in my heart . ❤❤ "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" still gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. ❤❤
Judy was so pretty and cute here, and her voice is of course flawless as ever.
I love this film so much! I especially love that, unlike other producers and directors she worked with, Vincente Minnelli let Judy Garland be herself; no painful nose discs and no false teeth, just Judy in all her natural beauty. ❤️
Oh wow! I love this!
So talented
53 years ago today the world lost the beautiful Judy Garland❤️❤️ R.I.P Judy💖
Garland was wonderful.
A gem of a movie.
Judy Garland was a genuine gift to the world. I discovered her as a child watching The Wizard of Oz for the first time .. she’s remained in my heart since 🌈
A most wonderful moment in movie history. A perfect scene of innocence and radiance. Never to be repeated over the ensuing years,
directed by a director of Italian origin 😘
