I read that Judy said that while making this movie was the only time she felt beautiful. So sad how her life ended after all the joy she brought to millions by way of her talent . She deserved better.

I think she said that she was true first in her life she beautiful (I would have to disagree she looked beautiful in many films before and after this one), but after that she still felt beautiful. I remember reading a story about her and one day in her 30’s she broke down crying in her dressing room and said: “I’ve lost my beauty,” after looking at herself in the mirror.

She was only known for that unique melancholic tone that we hear in “have yourself a Merry little Christmas” and “Somewhere over the rainbow”... pretty much everything else is forgettable.. Notice how she's the only one without a hat, her long strawberry blonde hair contrasted against the black and white with her in the centre of each shot forces your eyes upon her as her powerful voice dominates. This would have been painstakingly thought out and choreographed, each passengers costume carefully chosen to keep your attention on Judy while the story plays out. It's all very well done.

I agree with shouting horse. Also, if you look at her hair and costume, they were VERY fashionable in 1944, whereas all the other women are dressed in Edwardian clothes, which is the period in which the film was set. It all combines to make Garland the most attractive woman to a 1940s audience.

@@YouSimon1000 The song as conducted by Georgie Stoll for Meet Me in St. Louis has a very complex, evocative arrangement by Conrad Salinger featuring harmonized choruses, wordless vocals, and short highlights or flourishes from a wide range of orchestral instruments. When the song was recorded on the set of Meet Me in St Louis, it was done in a single shot. (That's from wiki, and there are numerous other sources online stating much the same.)
The young seem to be threatened by 'old school' entertainment, which of course was superior for the simple fact that the stage was smaller. But it's a bit extreme, and lamentable, to read of someone taking the low road, like an ostrich, bleating out "no it wasn't" before burying their head in the sand.

And the genius of her facial expressions and body language throughout. What a professional. She will never be adequately appreciated for what she brought to American culture. Vincente Minelli clearly loved her and was a genius at framing her. God Rest her beautiful soul.

He was truly gifted, and in a big way. The kaleidoscopic color and the composition in every scene in this movie is breathtaking. She's wearing dark clothing (except her collar, which frames her face) and no hat, while everyone around her has a hat (even the men) and are wearing bright, colorful clothing. In spite of his being gay, he had to be in love with her to call so much attention to her in a role that, at the beginning, was not considered a lead.

I've read that Judy Garland loved hanging around beautiful women because she thought that it would rub off on her somehow (even though she herself was already gorgeous). Instead of being catty she embraced them.
I say this because she does a double take towards the extra in the light purple dress at 1:56, who is very pretty, as if she wasn't expecting to see her there.
I can just tell in her eyes from that point on how much she was enjoying being part of the "beautiful girls" because of the way she was treated off screen by people who never recognized her own stunning looks. In fact, its said that she married Minelli because of how beautiful he made her look and feel during the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis.
It's very cute but very sad at the same time.

I am not an expert like some, but that is the most elaborate musical arrangement of any movie show tune I can think of. And the short musical flourishes after most lines anticipate the "wall of sound" style of the early 1960's. With Judy's singing that is an incredible sequence.

    • @Account.for.Comment

That was intentional. It called misc-en-scene. The black dress us to contrast with other colorful dresses (colorful to advertise technicolor) and draw attention to the star amongst the crowd. It is not unique, just a basic technique that was used in the early cinema era till today. The reason why you don't see that often today is because soft-focus close up and rditing became much easier with better camera.
That being said, it added a lot to the scene. One of my favorite scene in old Hollywood.
