    Fun Fact!
In Kaiba's original manga debut, he was known for literally assaulting people with thugs and stuff to get rare cards. He found out Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Moto, Yugi's grandpa) owned a Blue-Eyes White Dragon and after being turned away from it, later scammed it out of Yugi by asking to see it and swapping it with a counterfeit. Yugi noticed and when he confronted Kaiba after school, he fucking smacked Yugi upside the head with his metal briefcase.
Naturally, Yami came out later and tricked him into a Shadow Game, as he was wont to do pre-Duelist Kingdom. In this shadow game, monsters played would come to life from the card. Eventually, Kaiba lost and Yami inflicted a Penalty Game on him, forcing him into the waking hell of having his soul tossed into an illusory world inhabited by Duel Monsters (a concept that would later be revisited for the Duel Monsters spirit world) to die over and over at the monsters' hands.
    Here's the thing.
    *He got out.*
After getting out he acquired the other 3 Blue-Eyes cards in existence, by bankrupting 2 owners and driving the third to suicide. He then kidnapped Sugoroku and forced Yugi and co. to go through Death-T, *a literal death trap for which he hired professional hitmen, a torturer, AND A LITERAL SERIAL KILLER* in order to save him. At the end, Yami once again dueled Kaiba, who had taken his traumatizing nightmare experience and created holographic duel monsters to _simulate it._
In the end, Yami performed a new penalty game, Mind Crush, on Kaiba in order to literally force him to be a better person, lest he be trapped in a coma forever.
And he _still_ came out of it an asshole. Not a murderous asshole, sure, but still an asshole.
Nobody can stop this lunatic. A cliff won't stop him. DEATH CANNOT STOP THIS FUCKING MADMAN.

@@seasnaill2589 That was also something the dub really changed. In the original, Yugi is Yugi and Atem is Atem (no Yugi using Atem's body but not using his mind, or whatever that was). The problem was that Atem is so frightened of losing that he felt so pressured by Pegasus that he only had eye for Pegasus, and this pressure caused him to make mistakes in his duel against Mai. Then later, Mai talks about a duelist's courage, that you can't have that unless you're prepared to lose and get hurt, which is tested when a duelist is about to lose. This then makes Atem flash back to the situation with Kaiba, where he realizes that the thought of losing frightened him to the point he was willing to take Kaiba's life, while Yugi on the other hand chose to put himself between Kaiba and Atem to take the loss and suffering rather than take Kaiba's life. Atem then fully realizes he has weaknesses while Yugi has strengths that compensate his weaknesses, something he subconsciously already knew but didn't want to admit to himself before. It's then at that point he takes on Yugi's strength of a duelist's courage, not only alleviating the pressure he felt from Pegasus but also feeling courageous enough to take a very risky bluff vs Mai that eventually leads to his win.

@@morgantodd3748 Nope, the manga was originally about the Pharoah taking vengeance on anyone who fucked with Yugi or his friends by putting them through games with Saw-like stakes. Kaiba and the game that would evolve into Duel Monsters were originally a villain/game of the week, until audience interest in seeing the game fleshed out lead to it taking over about half the manga.

It's interesting how the 4Kids dub changes it to the blast from the attack will knock Kaiba off of the ledge, which makes Yami consider murdering Kaiba. However, the original having Kaiba threaten to jump makes Yami not as bad. But apparently having the antagonist threaten suicide is worse than having the antagonist say that "if you attack you'll kill me," which is still basically threatening suicide but also blaming the other person for it. At least in the original, Yami attacking comes off less cold blooded because it could simply be calling Kaiba's bluff and if Kaiba isn't bluffing Yami still wouldn't be responsible although Yugi probably would have held Yami responsible if Kaiba decided to jump after losing.

Adopted into the Kaiba family as an orphan, Kaiba is at the helm of the world’s largest multi-national gaming conglomerate, KaibaCorp, serving as its majority owner and CEO. An intellectually gifted and innovative computer programmer, engineer, and inventor during his youth, he invented virtual software for playing video games as a young child prodigy. Nonetheless, an estranged relationship with his stepfather and outsmarting him auspiciously led the young Seto towards a seamless corporate takeover of KaibaCorp. With access to vast wealth, technological resources, and a wellspring of scientific and business expertise, Kaiba seeks to expand KaibaCorp's business operations not just across Domino City but the entire world. A competitively astute businessman and cutthroat investor, Kaiba is feared throughout the business world; earning him the hospitality and respect that he needs from his peers and rivals. Kaiba also seeks to become the world's greatest player in Duel Monsters, to accomplish this goal, he must defeat his arch-rival, Yugi Muto.
Kaiba is largely considered an anti-hero, as his motives are usually egocentric and his personality traits are selfish and arrogant, but he does sometimes help Yugi and his friends if it’s in his best interest (although there are a few occasions where he helps Yugi when faced with a common enemy).
Among one of the recurring plots is Seto Kaiba being forced to deal with either people adversely affected by Gozaburo Kaiba's actions, wanting to take their revenge on Seto himself, or people from within KaibaCorp attempting to take over the company.
