5D's is the only anime where you really see the cast having jobs outside of dueling, Yusei becomes a Scientist and Akiza a Doctor at the end of the series and you see Jack working as a dry cleaner employee, book store clerk, restaurant chef and a waiter during the series.
I like card games, but if the whole world revolved around a single card game, especially a trading card game where people that can buy more cards have an advantage, I’d get pretty sick of it too
While he wants to be a Pro, he also wants to know that he at least has a choice in the matter and can drop out and change careers if he ever feels tired.
The idea of Seto Kaiba personally converting every community college into a Duel Academy is the least crazy thing he’s done. This is the man who sent children’s trading cards into space because, and I quote, “Because if there really is intelligent life there, let’s teach them how to duel!”.
This is the same man who built a way to send himself to the afterlife (with no way back) just so he could beat his rival in a duel. Turning every community college into a Duel Academy is just another Tuesday to him
For all his genius, Seto is an extremely traumatised and psychologically stunted person. For him to run a functional and non-abusive school (with Pegasus, no less), even one based on childrens' card games, shows emotional growth.
It's even crazier when you realize Jaden's character development through seasons 3 and 4 is him literally having mental health issues from *being forced to play a chlidrens card game.* The final episode was literally "Yo Jaden you forgot how to have fun go back to the past and have a good time."
It’s also due to having PTSD as a result of his friends dying because of him. Sure, they ended up being brought back later on, but it definitely must’ve still been traumatic af for him.

For the record, all these spin-offs made the Yu-Gi-Oh world about card games, but in the original manga, Duel Monsters was just one of many games played, and the cast all had actual dreams beyond playing card games, like Tea wanting to become a dancer and Yugi wanting to design games. The only nutjob is Kaiba, which is actually why this video makes sense. lol

I like that Jaden tried to help Syrus when he realizes he doesn’t want to be a Pro, most skits would have him try and make him enjoy dueling but this shows Jaden acknowledging his friend doesn’t want to be a Pro and accepting that. It shows how good of friends they are 😊

Jaiden is literally the reincarnation of an evil king and fused his soul together with a demon known as Yubel. Jaiden can literally conjure the cards into reality, create shadow games, enter different dimensions, talk to spirits, and use magic. Dude is the best duelist of his generation which makes him a god. No amount of nukes or bombs will stop Jaiden, you HAVE to beat him in a card game. That’s why everyone learns card games, its military at this point.

He scored in the lowest percentiles on the written exam 3. Starting in the latter half of season 1, Jaiden makes a point to respect Crowler as a teacher, and Crowler, in turn, stops trying to expell Jaiden (he still occasionally calls him ""Slifer Slacker" or "Dropout Boy").

The crazy thing is that it's canonical that this specific game is so powerful in dark magic that PLAYING THE GAME can be used as an energy source to run an entire futuristic utopia.
Whats even crazier is that all of the original and gx cards were hand painted. Pegasus literally duplicates the god cards with a surprising amount of success. This world is run by deviantart OCs that somehow have ancient magical powers.
I would honestly watch a parody slice-of-life show about a guy living in the world of YuGiOh and just trying to get by, despite having absolutely no interest in the game the entire universe revolves around.

In a way, Yusei wasn’t far off from that. Man was a damn good engineer and had other priorities than dueling, like getting out of the slave sector of the city. It’s just that the world had made Duel Monsters so integral to everything that he had to become great at it in order to make headway. I still love the moment when he goes to meet Goodwin and just punches the guards unconscious before walking into the room. You know Jaden or Yugi would have dueled them, but not Yusei.

He made a few niche games, then someone else took over, brought it out of Japan, and after some turbulence, it rebounded and ballooned exponentially in popularity, so almost nobody knows the creator even exists anymore. Although unlike Kaga, I don't think Pegasus is endlessly trying to recapture that audience, he just quietly exists.

no they would blame him for running an inconsistent deck that could even brick. Buddy it's 2023 if you are running a deck that can brick you are either trolling or memeing. For a deck to be competitive and appear in a tournament it has to be able to draw every piece of its combo in the first turn no matter the hand while also negating any card your opponent might play with hand traps. As Seto Kaiba once said "Yugi you fool! The police run meta!"

Like hand traps are cards you have to play in this dday and age but none of them advance your own game plan so every deck still has the innate potential to brick however unlikely.
Hey, The Chancellor also learned how to force his students to deal with world ending threats while still paying tuition and sleeping in a barely functional shack. And Jaden's last arc in the show during the fourth season was literally trying to enjoy Dueling again after watching it used to kill everyone he cared for.

The absurd thing is that this is only in the dub version. In the original, the Duel Academy was basically a normal school, with some stuff dedicated to dueling (much like some athletics-themed schools in real life). But many could leave to work in other stuff, even if they didn't go to the Pro League. Alexis for example said she was going to study in college abroad (probably to do something else), and Jaden is on sabatical after the series looking at what to do with his life after all that.
To be fair, that may be silly but its also based af and a great marketing move actually. Just imagine Coca Cola would fucking launch bottles into space saying: "If there is life out there, let them enjoy some coke "

I believe it was explained in the OG series that Duel Monsters is literally a magically addictive game. So, the entire world of Yu-Gi-Oh is quite literally addicted to playing a children's card game.

To be fair to Chancellor Shepard, I think having his students repeatedly having their energy drained, mind controlled, having their school be sent to another dimension, and having the entire student body flat out be deleted from reality would give him a lot of headaches.

0:30 to be fair, the duel academy actually had other courses besides "learning how to play a children's card game". There was PE, chemistry, history, alchemy for some unknown reason and game design. Plus there's the whole branch of underground animal experiments

Yeah. Although his videos doesn’t match the characters because it’s satire, and that’s fine and all. Duel Monsters is basically like professional sports, but beloved by 99% of the population. One of academy‘s goals is to train upcoming pros who would participate in the pro league, where there’s a lot of money and fame to gain, but other career options are still applicable. Although the 4Kids version really loves to butcher the dialogues and characterizations.
A show where the protag wants to create a better future for duelists making sure they don't just past their prime and end up disadvantaged would be a sick show
Ngl, I half expected the joke for Kaiba to be that he just really loves a children's card game and somewhere along the way unintentionally created a world that revolved around it, like a psychopath who isn't aware they're a psychopath kinda thing.
That's basically what happened in the series. Kaiba has advanced technology to such a extreme degree that he's created better tech than we have IRL (The story takes place in the 1990s/2000s) solely to improve the card game. In the DSoD movie, he is literally called a dictator by the villain because his corporate reach has extended to the entire city. That phone you own? He made it. That sewer system you use? He made it automatic. That video game you played? He made the game engine for it.

Actually, there are several instances in the anime where the students participate in sports like baseball and tennis. It's also confirmed that there are subjects that involve things other than dueling, like history or even Alchemy. Which makes sense since Duel academy is more of a high school than a college since you start when you're 15 and graduate at 18 similar to an actual high school in japan. So you could still go to an actual college and get a degree to fall back on.

@@darkwarriormaster9644 Well considering there is a spirit world in Yu-Gi-Oh and those spirits interact with the regular world. I wouldn't say it's really outdated in that world. As you can learn rituals to summon those spirits and force/invite them into cards, creating unique cards. And probably other things. Heck they used the card games energy to create a renewable energysource. I guess they chose Alchemy, because it's sounds less weird then witchcraft, even though Witchcraft would probably be more effective.
To be fair it is implied in the show that they actually do learn other subjects, they just teach them through Duel Monsters. Kinda like how Dungeons and Dragons is used in order to teach math.

The same island that houses the Duel Academy also is home to a secret lab where Kaibacorp was engaged in experiments in which they tried to teach a monkey how to duel. The monkey's name: Wheeler. Kaiba is a petty bitch.
You could drive the ferry. Or design the cards, or repair broken duel disks, you could be a janitor or honestly they really should've had a grounds keeper for that island. Maybe if your really lucky you might be able to bring Seto Kaiba his coffee one day, or maybe blow Pegasus even, perhaps.

After watching Arc-V, just about everything is tied into duel monsters. Culinary classes, Fortune telling, quiz shows. Good luck trying to get into a program course that DOESN’T lead you to making cards! Hell even the military can’t really beat them! Clear Wing Synchro Dragon showed that very well in the original dimension

i never watched Arc-V, but you could probably still become an accountant, a doctor, a lawyer, a biologist, a real-estate agent, a language teacher, a history teacher, a math teacher, a psychiatrist, a singer, a model, an actor, an adult star etc... They probably still have athletes and video game designers in that world

1:20 I am seeing the plot here. Make people only able to be duellists or teachers and the only place you can go is duel academy or another variant of duel academy. And if you dont have a duel disk you cant even be a citizen of Domino city. Kaiba conquered the world with this ploy
The funny thing is, the show did show that there was more going on than just card games. There was game design courses, science etc etc. They just managed to tie all of those back into making you better at cards.
I just figured that the YuGiOh world was so obsessed with children's trading card games that its a perfectly normal thing to duel the CEO of a company to take his job.
The Virtual World filler arc did something kinda like that. Also, Kaiba would've sold Academy Island if the buyers beat Chazz, so yep. Maybe not being CEO, but duels definetly control major business decisions.

It is both crushing and kind of heartwarmingg to see other people going through a similar change of emotions after realising the way lige works in our time. I went through exact same thought process in my first year of teachers’ collage (and still went on to graduate in 7 years lol) and decided It may not be a life I would lead in full extacy, yet again after inversting your time in one thing, you don’t know if you can afford the other (let alone the problem of not knowing if you’d love the next thşng you tried). Anyways, I wish to best of luck to everyone who feels similar. Let’s enjoy life while we can, I hope you can find somethşng you can follow with passion ^~^
At least Chazz can set up a gig where he uses that eyepatch he won from Christopher Walken's take on Captain Ginyu to make duel monsters real and have them staff a maid cafe or something. Or make the Blue Eyes real and offer Kaiba a ride on one for $20m and be set for life.
I would love to see a spin off series about Yugi (post-Pharaoh) making his own game, getting it published, and he ends up competing financially with other devs, with the ultimate antagonist being Duel Monsters itself, the most famous, popular, successful game on Earth, the very game he was once the king of. Only then can he truly call himself the king of games ;)

Magic & Wizards just ended up being the game Kaiba liked facing Yami Yugi in the most. Kaiba being the one to test Yugi's new game makes sense as he is not a card game dummy.
To be fair this is the same guy willing to shoot a rocket of cards just for the off-chance that aliens will encounter them and learn to play the game themselves
In the future, when cops try to arrest Yusei, they have to play a card game first, and he only gets arrested if he loses, like they HAVE to the technology won't allow them to act unless they win first it's hard wired into everything haha

I'd live in the duel monsters or GX world, anything past that is either a post-apocalyptic hellscape, or really shitty mechanics.
5D's is the only anime where you really see the cast having jobs outside of dueling, Yusei becomes a Scientist and Akiza a Doctor at the end of the series and you see Jack working as a dry cleaner employee, book store clerk, restaurant chef and a waiter during the series.

In a way, Yusei wasn’t far off from that. Man was a damn good engineer and had other priorities than dueling, like getting out of the slave sector of the city. It’s just that the world had made Duel Monsters so integral to everything that he had to become great at it in order to make headway. I still love the moment when he goes to meet Goodwin and just punches the guards unconscious before walking into the room. You know Jaden or Yugi would have dueled them, but not Yusei.

For a deck to be competitive and appear in a tournament it has to be able to draw every piece of its combo in the first turn no matter the hand while also negating any card your opponent might play with hand traps. In the original, the Duel Academy was basically a normal school, with some stuff dedicated to dueling (much like some athletics-themed schools in real life). But many could leave to work in other stuff, even if they didn't go to the Pro League.
Alexis for example said she was going to study in college abroad (probably to do something else), and Jaden is on sabatical after the series looking at what to do with his life after all that.

I believe it was explained in the OG series that Duel Monsters is literally a magically addictive game. So, the entire world of Yu-Gi-Oh is quite literally addicted to playing a children's card game.
Honestly, I just want to watch an realistic show about that! No crazy super-villains trying to blow up the planet. Just people trying to get by in a world where EVERYONE is magically addicted to an children card game! Just imagine the nightmare that will be, "I tried to shoot the robber... But than he challenge me to an duel... I lost and he took EVERYTHING!"

Yeah. Although his videos doesn’t match the characters because it’s satire, and that’s fine and all. Duel Monsters is basically like professional sports, but beloved by 99% of the population. One of academy‘s goals is to train upcoming pros who would participate in the pro league, where there’s a lot of money and fame to gain, but other career options are still applicable.
Although the 4Kids version really loves to butcher the dialogues and characterizations.

Ngl, I half expected the joke for Kaiba to be that he just really loves a children's card game and somewhere along the way unintentionally created a world that revolved around it, like a psychopath who isn't aware they're a psychopath kinda thing.
That's basically what happened in the series. Kaiba has advanced technology to such a extreme degree that he's created better tech than we have IRL (The story takes place in the 1990s/2000s) solely to improve the card game.
In the DSoD movie, he is literally called a dictator by the villain because his corporate reach has extended to the entire city.
That phone you own? He made it. That sewer system you use? He made it automatic. That video game you played? He made the game engine for it.

Actually, there are several instances in the anime where the students participate in sports like baseball and tennis. It's also confirmed that there are subjects that involve things other than dueling, like history or even Alchemy. Which makes sense since Duel academy is more of a high school than a college since you start when you're 15 and graduate at 18 similar to an actual high school in japan. So you could still go to an actual college and get a degree to fall back on.
They also teach game design there, it's mentioned in one episode

@@darkwarriormaster9644 Well considering there is a spirit world in Yu-Gi-Oh and those spirits interact with the regular world. I wouldn't say it's really outdated in that world.
As you can learn rituals to summon those spirits and force/invite them into cards, creating unique cards. And probably other things. Heck they used the card games energy to create a renewable energysource.
I guess they chose Alchemy, because it's sounds less weird then witchcraft, even though Witchcraft would probably be more effective.
To be fair it is implied in the show that they actually do learn other subjects, they just teach them through Duel Monsters. Kinda like how Dungeons and Dragons is used in order to teach math.
And Jaden is horrible at everything except practical Duelling.

After watching Arc-V, just about everything is tied into duel monsters. Culinary classes, Fortune telling, quiz shows. Good luck trying to get into a program course that DOESN’T lead you to making cards! Hell even the military can’t really beat them! Clear Wing Synchro Dragon showed that very well in the original dimension

The funny thing is, the show did show that there was more going on than just card games. There was game design courses, science etc etc. They just managed to tie all of those back into making you better at cards.

The question everybody asks when they learn this series exists. It's a good thing that the world of YGO DOES largely revolve around dueling.
It is both crushing and kind of heartwarmingg to see other people going through a similar change of emotions after realising the way lige works in our time.
I went through exact same thought process in my first year of teachers’ collage (and still went on to graduate in 7 years lol) and decided It may not be a life I would lead in full extacy, yet again after inversting your time in one thing, you don’t know if you can afford the other (let alone the problem of not knowing if you’d love the next thşng you tried).
Anyways, I wish to best of luck to everyone who feels similar. Let’s enjoy life while we can, I hope you can find somethşng you can follow with passion ^~^

Spherium II story is only a concept, a route Takahashi could choose to go into. It doesn't change the fact that it confirms that in the original manga canon, Yugi wouldn't be playing card games as an adult because since chapter 1 he has been playing different games. Same for Yami Yugi and Kaiba. Kaiba is a top games player that was ranked #1 worldwide in most of the games at the Domino Arcade. He also made the various games in Death-T to challenge Yami Yugi. Magic & Wizards just ended up being the game Kaiba liked facing Yami Yugi in the most. Kaiba being the one to test Yugi's new game makes sense as he is not a card game dummy.
