    Fixed valve cover gaskets, oil pickup tube, now rear main seal.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 3 дня назад +1

    The other thing that will fool you on these old chevys about a possible rear main seal is a leaking oil pressure sending unit. It's above the rear main so if that sending unit leaks it drips down and you'll think it's a rear main. Old chevys also had a tendency to leak from the front left inboard axle seal. Above that seal is a large round plastic cover with a vent tube attachment. That cover can also leak and fool you into thinking the axle seal is leaking.

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  2 дня назад +1

      Yeah, it's true. Those seals will leak down and trick you. You'll think the rear main seal leaks, and it doesn't. Most guys keep saying they swapped the rear main seal, and it still leaks. That's why they have problems.

    There were allot of things you left out. Allot of times leaks towards the rear of the oil pan can come from a Cam Sensor on Gen 3 & lower or the Oil pressure sending unit. They will leak oil down and onto your starter bolts and oil filter. Also the rear main seal & cover gasket like to leak oil as well. The rear main seal cover gasket is overlooked allot. Also the reason you have moisture on the oil cap is because your PCV system isn't working correctly. Some engines have a make shift PCV valve that's not really a valve but the little tiny port on the Driver Side valve cover "The Dirty Side" gets clogged. That is the port that dumps oil into your intake manifold. On some LS engines GM has a updated Drivers Side Valve Cover. Good Luck!

    You have to pull the engine, or drop the front differential to take the oil pan off. It's easier to pull the engine, it makes everything easier to get to. It's an all day job, or 2 or 3.
    I'd change the timing chain & gear, if your engine has high milage. Mobile 1 ... 10 W 30 is the way to go. Use AC Delco parts when you can.

    Owner since new of a 99' Silverado LT, 5.3 liter, 4x4. 200+k miles.
    Can not complain on the engine at all.
    Still runs well with general prescribed maintenance. Best part of the truck. Well done Gm! However, it does have assorted oil leaks. Miracle, lucky for those that do not. Short of seal replacements, within ease, all are original, but reality is they usually fail with age. All rejuvinator additives, in my case maybe slow the drips down. My question, if you could estimate your hours, or a shops/mechanics time on replacing all the seals as you have done on the Avalanche, what would estimate, realistically, not "repair book" shop hours, on realistic time for replacement as you have done on the Avalanche?

    My 2006 5.3l with 165k on it burns or leaks about a quart every 3000 miles. On mine if it has barely any oil in the dipstick and I add a quart it will take it to full mark. I basically run it for 3k miles, add a quart, and then run it until it gets low again and do a change. Equates to about 6-7k mile oil change interval.

      Sounds about right. If they get that low. I normally change the oil. If it's at the bottom of the crosshatch I normally add a quart of oil and it brings it up to the top of the crosshatch.

    My oil pressure moves up and down like very very little at idle but it never gets low just weird lol 😂 but I never get worried about it. I rebuilt my 5.3 with a performance engine kit off summit and after 3 years no leaks. But these engines do burn oil I’m at 3,000 miles since my last oil change and it burns about a quart every 3500 so it’s not bad just make sure you guys always check your oil levels every week or twice a week even without leaks keep changing your oil every 3,000 to 3500 miles

    • @MattsShop

    If you live in the rust belt and it's not a big leak like half a quart in a oil change you benefit from the coating under the vehicle.I run a 2002 lesabre from the Poconos to Morris County New Jersey 4 days a week that 3800 series 2 has a little drip but the whole underside of that car has no rust at 190000 miles,I change my oil myself usually every 4 to 45 hundred miles.

    It has been my experience that the oil life will not reset if there isn't enough light to keep the automatic headlights off. Being an after hours mechanic, I have used a flashlight on that dash mounted light sensor many times to reset the oil life indicator. Has anyone else noticed this?

    Mine used to leak... so I fixed it.. now it doesn't leak! Mine used to have low oil pressure... cam bearing fixed that. Mine used to burn oil... I found my oil wiper rings on my pistons were stuck. After freeing them... it quit burning oil. I've reused my original intake gaskets everytime I've removed the intake. Wix filters suck almost as bad as K&N filters.

      The next time you drop the pan if you look you'll see two bolt holes you can use at the top of oil pick up tube. Move the bolt to the hole thats closer to front of truck. Then it can easily be removed from the front of engine. When it's time to replace the oil pump you won't have to drop the oil pan, diff, or as many f-bombs.

    I've never really had an leaky ls. They have o-ringed gaskets. usually when they start pissing its from excessive crankcase pressure. Usually bad pcv valve or blow-by. You can add more crankcase ventilation that helps alot. But there's an old school racer trick I had to see it to believe it. Do a couple quick getto fog revs with some NOS that cold charge can some time's help revive tired ring's.

      The pressure sensor or the gauge is probably wrong/bad.

      I know what you mean. I haven't had any problems with the plastic pieces falling off. They don't look good once the plastic turns from black to gray.
