I feel like Randy was supposed to sing more with her but he just loved hearing her sing his song and knew she was talented and wanted her to shine.
The reason, Carrie did most of the song was couple of reasons. Randy was feeling weak and he was going to let Carrie go solo, Carrie said if you don't perform I don't perform. And other reason is, Carrie can hit the high notes, Randy can't. Randy's deep vocals prevents him from getting as high as Carrie can.
Randy was actually sick during this performance, hence the reason his voice wasn’t 100% and let Carrie do most of the performance.
1:37 I love how he just sits back as a legend and lets her belt out that part and just smiles. Best duo ever! You're the king Randy.
I've been watching reruns of Matlock. Randy guest starred in an episode I saw today
more brains in false face at that stage
He does it again at 3:19, great duet
Yes.
I love Randy Travis.
Randy looked like a proud dad watching Carrie.
God love him. Yeah think it lifted his heart to hear how great she is.
Hello
What’s awesome is that he let her have that moment….
Randy was mesmerized by her flawless and beautiful voice. Who isn’t?
He later said that while they were performing this song, as he was watching her sing her part, he knew she was going to light country music on fire.
I understand why Randy would say that
Randy said that about Carrie, when he heard on American Idol. Most veteran country music stars said the same thing about Carrie. They knew Carrie was going to change country music for the better.
Absolutely and she still is. Gotta love those okies. Vince, Reba, Merle, Carrie. That's quite a list and it's even longer. Love this duet. God bless them both.
I will never forget him looking over at her and that smile of his!!!!

If I had a dollar for how many times I’ve come back to watch this over the years, my mortgage would be paid off

Hello
Randy Travis seeing a star being born .
Who’s watching this in 2020 🥰

Me too .
I, just did and WOW, I'm so in love with Carrie, what perfect tone and pitch she has, it had me Crying! Randy your the best & way to go!!!!!
In 2024, still love watching this. Randy was sick during this performance, hence why his voice isn’t 100% and let Carrie do most of the singing. He wanted to be there’s for Carrie despite being sick and his voice gone.
I’m 70 years old and tear up every time I watch this because she had her entire career in front of her and Randy is very near the end.
Let’s not think about Randy Travis being at the end. He still going and incredible as he ever been. He still got it.
Hello
Have you heard Randy's new single? With the assistance of AI, he's beginning anew. It's stunning what they've done to bring his voice back.
I am now 32; I am not sure that when I am old like your age I can feel about love and pain like now or not. Does love still in our soul?
No matter how many times I hear this I tear up. Great song, and performance. The Look on Randy's face was priceless.
that smile on his face says " YES GIRL! SING IT!"
Randy already knew Carrie could sing long before this. He was smiling because Carrie can hit the high notes that are in that song, he can't.
Exactly
I noticed that too. He sees the talent for sure..
Omg is the pun intended
Tanner Anderson ya
In 2022, this performance still gives me chills!!!
So amazing!!!!!
Me in August of 2023....... and someone who's old enough to remember it being on the radio REGULARLY on the main country station ❤❤ agrees 😂😂😂❤❤
November 2023 it’s still one of my favorite music moments.
You're not wrong! Classic Carrie and she keeps getting better❤💯@@Margaret-1661
I love the way Randy Travis smiles and looks at Carrie when she hits those high notes, what a voice!
A great sign of being humble and giving respect to Carrie, my idea!
I noticed that as well. You could see the “AWE!!!” and the wow factor, than beaming with pride for her! So, so sweet!!! Love them both so much!!!!
I reckon, I noticed that too..beautiful 😍👍👏💙❤
@@behroozhakimian9868 Randy knows Carrie has no problem getting the high notes in this song. As Randy said before to Carrie. This song was made for Carrie. As a humble Carrie would say no way.
And he's so proud of her. 😊
IF he had told her that she was gonna be a star she wouldn't believe but he saw it all.. Thank you Randy
I love the way he looks at her during this performance. She doesn't even realize how successful she'll be.... but he does. It's such a sweet moment.
Sarah DeLeon he was looking at her like I'd hit that lol
Totally agree. He already knows she is a star .. He is in awe of her..
@@jcribbs5819 ... yes; he hears it and how natural it is... he has heard top notch singers since he was a kid
@@joshuasuddethjs your an idiot! I get it yes beautiful girl but no he recognizes an amazing voice. I no its RUclips and full of stupid comments and ignorant people and thats what your comment is but its unnecessary here.

This woman belted out a song written and performed by her idol. She killed it and Randy was gracious enough to give her credit. He is a legend.
Randy so wants to hand this song to Carrie all the way. One big problem, Carrie has politely and publicly doesn't want to do. That is how much respect Carrie has for Randy. And since Randy can't full sing yet from his stroke. She doesn't sing it at all. Randy knows how good Carrie is.
Absolutely ! Phenomenally Phenomenal
He really is a legend!
Nice
Hello
The way randy looked at Carrie while she is singing is so beautiful!!!! It’s so touching!!! He looked so proud of her
HE really did. He look like a proud proud father.
I just love this song and more so the combination they r unique .
He's like "You know what, I'm just gonna sit here and listen because this is amazing"
I love this performance so much!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly..He's looking at her like he is a true and loving and happy dad of a daughter
Randy was one of the last true country artists. His voice and range was pure gold!
Why are you saying was? He is still alive.
It hurts to see ‘was’ for him! He will always be ‘is’ even he is finally gone. Not many souls like him around!
Man no doubt. I love randy he is very special in my heart when it comes to his music . And his life story just like Toby Keith and Alan Jackson and King George jones
Randy knew right off the bat that she had talent. His smile says it all. Lol. So adorable
Randy Travis is one of the greatest country artists of all time!
Tenn vols he’s king of country
If you ask me what do I need to listen to. So I know what country music sounds like. I would tell you to listen to randy travis and little of Carrie underwood and you will be on the right track ❤️🤔❤️
He is a gem. I'm a George Strait snob but Randy Travis is right there too.
ruclips.net/video/7aWmnUP8Gt4/видео.html
Yes!!! Saw him 2 times in the 1980's in Concert in Utah!!!
In my opinion, of all the live performances I've ever seen and heard on television shows, this one is the best.. I was mesmerized the first time I saw them perform it.
It just breaks my heart that he can no longer speak due to his stroke. We listened to this album so many times. Carrie is an amazing talent.
Hello 👋 Alisa. How are you doing? Hope you're fine. I am Zack Hudson and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem to a real country girl
That smile Randy gets when Carrie starts hitting those high notes.. One day I want to play guitar with a girl who gives me that smile when I here her sing
fastfoodgaming I agree...I noticed that too.
fastfoodgaming and Carrie's smile and little clap when RT starts singing. She knows she is on stage with a legend.
fastfoodgaming Randy's smile when Carrie was singing the high parts, was Randy acting like a proud papa. He has said that Carrie high vocals suits this song better than his low vocals.
+robert gardell Oh I noticed that grin, I wish that Randy got a little more sound time, because it is rare, but done as Randy does it, his bass might be a touch better than her highs if you get my drift, probably because her voice is so pure but his has a small amount of gravel.
Duff Gordon That is the way, Randy wanted Carrie to do it. Randy actually wants Carrie to take it as her song and Carrie said no way. It is his song and that is the way it stays.
Randys smile says it all♥♥♥♥♥♥
he looked at her and smiled like a proud papa!
Yes, he was, because he enjoys her high vocals, where Randy this song should be. He said it sounds better with her high vocals.
Sing it carrie
121212112
The way he looks at her...like...you got it
I love how he kept the song in her key to allow her to shine, even though he struggled quite a bit to keep up. Beautiful performance.
She just finished that song solo when he walked out onto the Grand Old Opry stage and invited her to become a member.
Both power voices. Randy Travis has such a traditional and unique voice and it is missed
Such a good performance. Massive respect for Randy Travis here. So many performers would have tried to match her to show their talent. He just stands back, lets the young star have their moment, and enjoys it. It doesn't hurt that she has an amazing voice.
Great comment!
True gentleman
That’s so true he’s classy as hell
Ditto
Very true. He's such a gentleman and a legend in his own right
When RT smiles during them high notes, its because she's on point and he's in awe.
+Chad Roberts - and shes hot - so he keeps thinking about snow capped mountains - to distract his thought s - lol
The reason, Randy was smiling that big smile. He knows how high Carrie can go. And Carrie can go so high with such ease.
@@row759 schoolchildren
Think Randy let Carrie take the lead and majority of the song because he knew damned well Carrie was a star!
She definitely did that song good!
She sings so beautifully. Brings me to tears.
Even if you say you 'hate' country music this one will convert you every time.
I fell in love with country at 2 when my parents were separating and my sister played Tammy Wynette's D. I. V. O. R. C. E.
++Pokygirl2001
I'm not really a Country hater, but there seem to be too many similar songs. There are a lot of good voices in the Country field, but they don't really so it for me. The only Country singer that really got right through to me and actually moved me deeply, and for me the greatest of the lot, was Jerry Lee Lewis. He would have converted me, but there never was anyone else remotely like him or anyone else who could wring so much emotion out of a song. I still listen to him very often.
this was 100% me wow i love this so much
True
Np body hayes country mudic they need to lisyen to the lyrics begore they ssy hate country music
The GREATEST performance in American Idol history.....PERIOD!!!!!

Yeah, what he said!
Yes, beautiful!
Amen brother 🙏👍😇🤔😍😁
Hell yeah!
Absolutely correct when randy hears carries high note it's amazing the look on his face plus his smile. One for history. ❤
This song still brings chills to me so much feeling why isn't music like this anymore 😩
I take back everything I ever said about the new crop of "country" artists..This girl is the real deal.
***** amen
James Daniels Why call Carrie, a new artist, she been in the business for 10 years.
robert gardell exactly
James Daniels to further comment, Carrie has 20 no. 1 hits to her credit. She is consider a veteran in the music business now. This video was 5 years ago.
Beautiful
Neither Randy or Carrie knew that when Carrie record this song and put it on her album and release as a single. It was going to turn into a blockbuster hit and return it to no. 1 hit. Carrie simply enjoy the song and that Randy wrote it was bonus. And she was just happy gave permission to do it. Rest of it was just a nice surprise.
Omg, this put me in tears! I love how Randy looked at Carrie with such love and pride while singing his part soo beautifully like he doesn't think much of his self even tho he is such a legend!
WOW, no wonder Carrie became the mega SUPERSTAR she has become. Incredible vocals even here as a rookie on Idol, INCREDIBLE 🤯
She's so scared to even look at him...and he has such joy in her talent!
Yes.. you can see it in his eyes.. this girl is destined for greatness
That's her idol!
Carrie wasn't sacred to look at Randy. Main reason, Carrie didn't look at Randy because Randy was grinning from ear to ear and Carrie can't sing, when Randy is doing that.
Damn why can't she come over and sing me to sleep. Her voice is so beautiful
I don't think there's a song Carrie Underwood can't sing !!!!. She's just got one of the greatest voices. She's so blessed with that voice.
A perfectly written song was sung by two beautiful voices.
Just imagine if Carrie had never been discovered by American Idol, what a loss for all of us music fans!
ok but look at all the great ones that are never heard or recognized !! There are amazing singers out there that will never even set foot on a stage, its almost sad the amount of music we will ever know !!
@@warrenmichael918 not like it's hard to upload to youtube, if it's good it will get around.
yes true, but you cant compare a random youtube video of a good singer getting discovered versus a good singer being seen by millions on a very popular television show ! Im sure there are tons of great videos on here of people that just wont ever be heard or given a chance to be heard by many.....
warren michael like I said, if it's good it will go viral.
She's no reba .... Mainly bc her music just sucks
Randy knows that girl can really sing, and she can, great duet.
Getting goosebumps 60 years old and FEEL music
Maybe sing this to him now to remind him that it doesn't matter how big you get, but remembering the old days keeps us all going.
Amazing performance! And what a gentleman: Take an incredible, classic song and allow a beautiful young lady to take "your song" and run with it, (with a smile!)! Randy Travis: Pure Class Act! Carrie Underwood: Beautiful Voice, Pure Talent!
God, the fact that legend Mr. Randy Travis is in awe of Carrie’s talent. Especially, when she belts at 2:42 he knows she’s gonna make history.
I love how he smiles when she hits that note so well and just holds it❤ He said "This girl's got it."😊
Good lord I've never heard this girl miss a note.....always on point as hard as it is she makes it look effortless... a carrriebfan from the start and till the end. Sing on underwood!!!!
Two great artists. Mutual respect and admiration.
Travis and Carrie ❤️ here in 2020!

The way that Randy Travis looks at her, tells you everything you need to know about this duet! Randy is obviously the king of this song. But if we could say anything about a queen, Randy tells it all in his eyes. Carrie, this song was definitely meant for you according to Randy Travis‘s eyes
When I saw the way he looked her I could see how proud is was of her
The song is beautiful & reminds me some 26 yrs later how his infidelity "broke our marriage & almost destroyed my life!" Love nor trust lives here no more! It's me & Jesus now. ❤🎉
Randy Travis is like damn she is good. lol
Z28guy30 Yes but I'm not worth it Her friends are more for her
Jane what the he11 are you talking about
I love how Carrie pulled back whenever they sang together and then let loose when it was just her :) Beautiful
Carrie has so much respect for Randy is why she was doing that.
I love how he’s literally so in awe of her while singing his song that he literally gets distracted from playing his guitar! The proud and sweet way he looks at her melts my heart. Love these 2 so much
Your so right!!!

Beautifully said.
The look on his face. He looks at her like she's the legend and he's the one looking up to her example.
That is because Carrie can get into high range, where he can't. As Randy said this is where this song belongs in the high range, Carrie reaches. He said it was nice hearing in the proper range.
It was in this moment that she solidified herself as a country powerhouse. And country music was going to have to get prepared for her to to make some serious waves!! Randy knew she was the real deal during this duet.
Don't know which is worse..losing a artist to death or losing a singer like Randy Travis to a stroke..love his music always did.. glad I got to see him twice
He gave her the spotlight. He deserves the spotlight of this song Love to this man
Exactly. He let it be Carrie's time to shine.
Randy Travis is still alive. So the RIP is premature. He had a massive stroke but by the grace of God he is still with us.
Took my breath away!!!❤
The best Randy Travis song sung by the most wonderfully beautiful recording artist.

A voice straight from God. Give him his glory
This was one of the BEST performances that night. Phenomenal duo ❤️

Such a power duo from two legends.

Carrie is just fantastic, a true vocal talent. I think Randy's smile says it all.
Yes👌🏻
Hello darllen
It's amazing that 2 of the best singers ever (Kelly and Carrie) came from American idol. Many people can sing but few can reach the Super Star level they did. Carries rendition was flawless!
This is a song I circle back every 6 months or so to listen to. It just gives me an immense feeling of so many emotions when she sings. A special song sung by special people.
She is pure grace! Randy travis is pure country gold!🤠
Randy's stroke was so so awful! Sure hope and pray he makes a comeback someday! If not, still love him!

Seeing him smile was everything.

The moment Randy knew she was going to be amazing. Gives me chills to this day. This was such a beautiful duet. I'm the biggest Randy Travis fan. Preying he can come back and perform one more time.
Carrie is a pure talent, gifted by God plain and simple. She just opens her mouth and out it comes from her soul to ours. When WE feel what she channels, we know it's coming from a special place.
Randy Travis was PURE RAW God gifted talent! Wow...he's simply amazin'! Carrie is also talented, but Randy was and is a most talented God gift to all who ever really listened to him! Amazin' talent which only comes from ONE source, simple as that! No voice lessons needed for Randy! Have to see God EVERYTIME ya hear Randy's talent! 💕🙏

Carrie Underwood and Randy Travis - still the best song in American Idol :) :) :)

I love Randy Travis!!! I realize that people like me can have no influence on him, or even ever have the chance to talk to him, but I wish that someone who does have that opportunity would reach out to help him with his problems, instead of the dicks in the media stomping him down further every time he makes a mistake. People who drink excessively need us to HELP THEM, NOT PUSH THEM DOWN FURTHER!!!
WE LOVE YOU RANDY!!!
I wish we could get updates on his recovery. Like you ... HELP the man ..don't STOMP the man.

msconniejo65 From Randy Travis to all his friends...April 20, 2015
STORMS OF LIFE...
Hello my friends. It was an amazing gift to feel all of the love from you tonight in Dallas at the Academy of Country Music Awards. It has been a hard fought and miraculous journey since my stroke two years ago, and I have gained a greater understanding of God's grace and how quickly events can change us.
Words can never explain my gratitude to those who continue to believe in me, pray for me, and keep me lifted up in thought and deed. The kind cards and heartfelt letters of testimony and encouragement brought me through the darkest of days. Mary read each and every one of them to me and I felt the love and concern being sent my way; and, I gathered strength from this. None of us are worthy of the immense outpouring of support shown to me and I consider each of my fans, a friend. Thank you from the bottom my heart.
The power of music remains a source of inspiration and healing for me. Writing songs was always a passion of mine and I still have a lot to share with you. It is my prayer that, with continued healing, one day soon, I will be back on that stage exchanging music with my fans...my friends, who with God's amazing grace, have brought me this far. As I work through music/speech/occupational/physical therapy, it is my hope that my songs of yesterday continue to touch your life in some way.
I wish you each-good health, a kind word, a song in your heart, and a friend that has your back through thick and thin.
My gratitude & love, “Forever and Ever, Amen”
Randy Travis
Lorene Ness God Bless You, Randy Travis, and your wife, friends and family. I pray for you everyday that God will restore your health and let you sing again. But if that never happens, the gifts you have given the world already and continue to give us are more than enough. Those of us who love and admire you just want you to get healthy, stronger and enjoy your life. We want God to heal you, and we are so grateful that you are still here with us. The world is a nicer, more meaningful place because of you.
May God bless you, Mary and all of your family. Thank you for your talent and your humanity. Your fan and friend, Gary Silber, Jackson, MS
That was wonderfully said Gary. Thank you!

A shame Randy is not well.
Excellent songwriter, singer and awesome person.
The very first time my wife and I saw Carrie underwood on American idol we looked at each other and said she’s going to win. You could just tell that she was ahead of the rest in talent . She hit the big time.
Carrie Underwood is a superstar - she's got power, control, phrasing, range...she's got it all!
Randy Travis is an awesome singer one of my favorites
