Was not expecting to hear Torn as the second half of this. Glad that both Phalanx and Torn exist as their own songs as they are two of my favorites. Thanks for sharing this, Matt.
I love this. The re-write has done wonders for this song. The demo is fantastic, but I feel as it is, it would have been a little lost on Shogun. Holding it back, and developing it with the experience gained in the interim made it one of Trivium's absolute best songs.
Paulo absolutely was correct to change the chorus. The current song is frankly fucking excellent. Its really cool to hear what it couldve sounded like in shogun though!
Very good decision to hide The Phalanx in 2008 because it is not in the same frequency with Shogun. But it is absolutely very good decision to put in album of 2021... And I think it is big musicianship to wait 13-14 years to find right album to put it into. Thanks Trivium for this art.
If this is indeed the 2008 demo, I’ll be stoked! Fond memories graduating high school and attempting college while blasting Ascendancy and The Crusade. Would love to see this era (2003-2008) revisited more!

Also, I have to mention that's very admirable that you guys will sit on riffs and ideas for years until the time is right... you end up with 2 masterpieces instead of 1.
It's interesting to see how the song developed. I'm glad it was kept for ITCOTD and re-hashed. It fits the theme of that album better. But fucking god does this demo still slap 🤘
The layered vocals at the end where you hold "heart" over the refrain gave me massive chills upon my first listen to this at release - it is an absolutely massive closer.
I got to say, as a fan of Trivium when I was younger and having not been since in waves, the chorus in this version stands out, it's simple but the vocal melody is brilliant
I like both versions honestly. I’d love to have this version in iTunes though. I’m a big shogun fan though so that might be why I like this sound so much.
Commenting to echo the sentiments of the others. I NEED THIS DEMO RELEASED PLEASE. I love the chorus and well everything. Even the Torn Between bridge.
The weirdest thing is after the single was released and you spoke about it being a shogun leftover, I played Scylla right after because of the similar vibes (or maybe cuz scylla is my favorite off that album), not knowing that the two were one at the time.
I love hearing this stuff. Behind the scenes stuff and tour stories and things are intriguing to me. This song is my favorite on the record and to hear that it was conceptualized so long ago is cool.
I just listened to this side by side with the ITCOD version and noticed that the vocal melody in the chorus from the demo is used in the orchestration during the chorus of the new version. Very interesting!
I wish these demos were released for some shogun special release. Would be cool to hear these songs properly, especially Phalanx and Silence in the snow without all the skipping and talking
Living in hopes that Trivium one day release the demo versions from the archives. Day one buy as it is for all their albums so far. So glad we're getting to hear the demos after all this time rather than them never seeing the light of day.
It's always so cool hearing these demos. Honestly, I think it would be amazing if you did Ascent of the Phoenix and OG Silence in the Snow as bonus tracks or something.

Really cool to hear this early version; you guys made the right choice, in my opinion. I think the piece taken goes well in that song, and the new version of this one shows their growth as a band. It's also great to hear how much Matt's voice has improved, from all the hard work he's done. Like back then, he was fine, but he's gained so much power and control. Fun stuff to experience!
Incredible to hear this and compare it to the ITCOTD version. Both are phenomenal, and I love how you all have evolved as individuals and together as a band. Makes me wonder what other tracks there may be archived away that we haven't heard yet. 😉
Wow. Two of my favourite tracks combined lol. I'm sure if this was back on Shogun, I would have lost my shit to this. But you know what, fair play on holding off until now. The Phalanx as it was finally released sounds epic, and It sounds great with your new and improved vocal skills.
