How to Find Chasm of Doom in Joshua Tree National Park

- The Chasm of Doom is one of Joshua Tree National Park's many hidden secrets. It is a twisting hidden maze consisting of many tunnels, passageways, and tight squeezes through the giant boulders of Hidden Valley. It is NOT for the faint of heart or the claustrophobic. In fact, with his mild claustrophobia, Dustin had a bit of a problem through some tighter spots. It is an awesome experience for the adrenaline junkies. However, not only you'll need to be comfortable and able to fit in tight spaces, but you will also need to be able to climb, scramble, and boulder in the dark.

You guys “ rock” literally
hahha Thank you!
Perfect place to have your own 127 hour experience!!
Just finished this today. We waited until nightfall and did it again with no lights under a full moon. I highly recommend it! It seems to be a popular idea considering we weren't the only ones navigating the chasm in semi pitch black darkness.
That has to be a pretty wild experience! We might have to try that next time 😁
Bumped into this randomly and I'm scarred for life. That coffin section and all of it was terrifying 😳 my respects to you both for being so daring and amazing at the same time. 👏👏👏
Lol, it's really not as bad once you're in there! Thank you for stopping by. 😊😊
I got anxiety real bad from watching you have to slide on your back, backwards on rocks. I don't think my body would fit. I think my butt or stomach would be ripped off so i could get out 😵😬😰😱
Omg thanks so much we found it yesterday! even though I’ve been there years before I was never able to find it until I saw this video
I did the Chasm of Doom at night with an outdoor adventure group back in college. I remember hoping that we didn't have an earthquake while squeezing through the coffin. Super cool experience.
That's pretty wild! We ran it at sunset last week. Dark has to be a whole different level!
Dude our rock climbing guide took us through this a couple weeks ago, absolute insanity haha
Thats awesome!!! So much fun! Glad you got to check it out!
Hi Jordan, do you have a contact for your rock climbing guide, I am planning on going through the Chasm of doom and would love to go with a guide, thanks
@@muslimakagami company was called Mojave Guides, we had a guide named Ryan
@@JordanGreenPNW Thanks for the info!
Oh my! That coffin section had us holding our breath! 😬 That white tank granite can be brutal on the skin.
Haha yeah. Dustin checked a few times before he was brave enough to crawl through. The granite is definitely not fun, especially when it's freezing outside.. 😫
I’m claustrophobic myself. But honestly I want to get over that fear and this seems like a good start. I’ll do it. Looks like fun.
Thank you for this video. Definitely another trip in the future to complete the entire area.
Anytime! There is so much to do there! Hope you have fun and be safe! 😊
This is wonderful & I thank you for sharing because it's a hike I would not do 😁
Haha I Cant blame you one bit! I think we made this one so people could enjoy it from the comfort of their own home :D
@@ThatAdventureLife 😁 that's exactly what I did; enjoyed from home!
Many years ago Chongo Chuck used to take groups thru there in the dark with headlamps. This was when camping in Hidden Valley was still free.
That would be so fun! I cant even imagine how it must be in the dark.
Chongo forever
thank you so much for posting this video! Because of you two showing us how to do this hike, we did it twice today and absolutely loved it!
So stoked that you guys got the check it out. Isn't it awesome? Was the entrance blocked off at all because I heard that it was
Thanks for making my one day in Joshua Tree extra memorable by doing this mini adventure.
So glad that you got to do it! Someone said it was closed, did you have any trouble getting in?
Awesome video! I found myself in the Coffin or The birth canal today! Wow, it can be a squeeze at times! I'm 5-11', 190ish, and it was quite the adventure finding ways to slither in between, and up, and down rocks. There is a super tight traverse ( tighter than coffin with feet on a narrow ledge, but at least you're upright!) just before the coffin off to a pretty sweet view. Its a really fun and exciting hike/climb! Have fun and be safe!
oh yeah, that ledge. That one is way tighter than the birth canal. Dustin had to stop breathing for a sec to be able to squeeze through. Lol. Glad you had a great time!
We did this trek in reverse- the scariest part was coming down to the coffin entrance from the viewpoint because you would just never know the way out was there so close to the ground. I felt like I was gonna be stuck in that hole until my fellow hikers showed me how low you had to get to squeeze through the coffin.
We want to try it in reverse sometime. The coffin is pretty terrifying no matter which way you come at it I bet. It took us 2 trips to realize that it was the way we needed to go! The first time we were like. there's no way that's it!
Great video. The coffin would probably make me turn around
Thank you! I can't blame you! It is so tight right there!
Geat video. Very informative. Suscribed.
Thank you so much! We are glad that we can share our adventures with you! 😁
Just came back from this spot. I’m for sure going back and trying to speed run.
Maybe bring Helmet! I hit my head at regular speed 🤣🤣
Did this at like 11pm in November. It was pretty sweet
That has to be pretty wild in the dark!
Did this in high school when I was 50 pounds lighter ! Haha would love to go again but don’t know if I could still fit through the coffin
Hahaha, that could be your inspiration. 😉
I usually do this scramble from the other direction and bypass the coffin. There is another chasm just north of it, you can link them together for a pretty epic adventure with a group of friends. Gotta love J-tree!!
Oh wow! We didn't know that! Looks like it is time to go back and check it out! I know you said to the north, but the other one is part of the same rock formation?
Wow! this is such a cool spot! I'm not sure if I can squeeze through some of these spots, next year, spring body here I come!
Yea man some of those spots get pretty darn tight. It is a super fun experience though. You and the boys should definitely check it out! :D
@@ThatAdventureLife We were there this Saturday, I should've watched your video before going. =) I'm posting a little vlog tonight. I'm still working on my story structure. YT vlogs is a lot harder than what I thought lol
Was more than happy to watch all the rock climbers at Hidden Valley today, glad I did not find the coffin. Funny story to tell that I cannot tell here.
The coffin is definitely an interesting experience that's for sure! Now I really wanna hear your story!
thanks for sharing❤
Sure thing! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was SO much fun. We did it in reverse though and found it easier. I was able to army crawl through the coffin, the only odd part was you feel like you are going slightly downhill (when you go in reverse of this video). Thanks for sharing! We were so glad to have found this video!
We are so glad that you got to experience it! We haven't tried it in the reverse direction yet. I think we might have to give it a go on our next visit. Did you run into much traffic going the other way?
@@ThatAdventureLife We had a group of 12 (7 kids) so it took us a little longer but had the whole route to ourselves! I guess we were lucky! 😊
@@theperpetualadventuremachi4571 wow that's awesome! Probably a good thing too since you guys were rolling with a big group.
Nada mas de ver el video se me quitaron las ganas de ir. Mis respetos!
I'd love to do this, but I'm planning to go alone and there's no way I'm doing the coffin part with no one else around. I'm 6 feet and 150 lbs, so I can probably fit...but hell no
I bet that you will be fine! This is Dustin, I'm 5'9 170 and I got through just fine 😁👍
yeaaa you had me till the coffin of doom!
Ha ha ya that's a deal breaker for lots of folks 😂
lol same!
I am 74, I did it!
would I do it again?
Sure, It was scary but exciting at the same time.
One advice, don't do it alone!!
That is so awesome! We are so glad that you got to experience it. I definitely agree about the not going alone part. Keep on adventuring! 😎👍
The BEST way to do this is a new moon at night with no headlamp. You have to have someone guide you through it for the first few times. But it is easily the greatest way to do this.
If you run around hidden valley at night time and yell CHASM OF DOOOOOM youll get a good possy behind you and someone that knows the way
That would be wild!! We have done it 4 times now and I still think we would need someone more experienced to do it in the dark. Might need a helmet too 🤣
@ThatAdventureLife honestly I've never seen it in the light before your video. It's just about staying on thr left wall then finding the birth canal and from there It's pretty easy to find the second hallway.
The scariest part for me is doing the scrambling up to that tree at the start in the dark
did this a day ago its possible to get there from the first grill
I'm sure there are many ways to get there. We always went through the 2nd grill though. Will keep that in mind. 😊
The "coffin" reminds me of the MRI scan I had a few years ago
I've been there man! That is a great way to sum it up!
No way would I do the coffin of doom.....
Definitely not for everyone 😂
ahh hell no!
Did Soundgarden have an album with pictures from here??
Thats a great question! Do you happen to remember which album it was?
@@ThatAdventureLife
'King Animal' ✌️
@@tryin2beehappygolucky431 from what I can see of the album cover I would say no.
been there , done that. at the time 7 yr old daughter n i went thru the chasm of doom and thru the coffin 👍you can bypass the coffin by climbing up and end up where the overview is at. we've also entered from the other side going backwards 👍
That had to be quite an experience for a 7-year-old! That's probably a good thing about the bypass. I am a little claustrophobic and the coffin definitely pushed my limits a bit. We would love to try it backward too.
@@ThatAdventureLife we also like going to the iron door. indian cave aka hidden cave is next on our list but will have to do research or buy death valley jim's book. my parents live in joshua tree. we come and visit and go out exploring.
@@fvrrljr We havent hit those spots yet, but it sounds like we may have to check it out!
Could you reverse this scramble to the top easily? Wondering if there is a way to get on top without going through coffin
Not sure which top you're talking about but you can go from the other side to go to the view point and goes back out the way you come from. If this is all you want to do, you can skip the coffin part.
Is this actually a trail? with a trailhead and sanctioned by the national park rangers? or is it something somebody discovered and people started to follow suit?
It is actual not so much of a trail as it is a series of tunnels. It's a fun place to explore. 😁
I did that barefoot with some great people at night one time
Oh man! Were your feet ok?
I was just in Joshua Tree, I’m glad to say I did not pay a visit to the chasm of doom
🤣🤣🤣 ya it's not for everyone! Hope you had a great time!
Imagine being in there and there’s an earthquake! 😳
Don't think I'd like to be there if an earthquake were to occur
Wouldn't be a good idea...
In that “halway” in 1:47 i couldnt figure out wether to go straight or right
It has been a while. I believe you go straight. I think that is the spot where going right took you to a tight squeeze that dead ends
@@ThatAdventureLife ok
@@ThatAdventureLifethis is my new account i did it again found where to go since there was a ton of people. It was super fun and i will do it again when i go back for christmas break
@@rickydoesstuff that's awesome! Best of luck taking in the Chasm of Doom again! 😎👍
Three hours is really long. We were there for maybe 20-30 minutes.
We took our time and explored a bunch. We are also super slow hikers 🤣
@@ThatAdventureLife I understand as you needed to shoot the video clips and enjoy the views.
Has been officially blocked off with dirt and rocks maybe due to adventurers getting stuck.
Aw bummer! I can definitely see how someone could get stuck though!
I will pass
How to sit on my couch and watch you find it
That works too!
Too much effort
It is actually really fun and totally worth it.
Nnnnnoooooooooo
Nice job packing 3 hours into 5 minutes
Thank you! That's always the struggle. We want to do our best to showcase our adventures without all of the filler. 😎
@@ThatAdventureLife ok. I will make sure to sub
@@themusicking4365 thanks man! We appreciate it! Hopefully we can show you some really cool stuff 😁
It's not called the coffin, generally refered to as the birth canal. But feel free to rename it as you please. Chasm used to be a local secret, but now there are videos and directions. Oh well, let the guides and videos exploit the delicate desert and soon we will have a 310 area code in the coffin, canal.
Also, you never mentioned snakes. Lots of snakes in the chasm. That's how it got the 'doom' title.
Have fun exploring.
The real exploitation of this land by foreigners began almost 300 years ago and continues being occupied to this day.
At least they're not being disrespectful.
