Consumer-ready virtual reality is still at least half a year away, but Samsung's Gear VR Innovator Edition gives us a first glimpse at what the first apps and games for mobile VR could look like. We discuss the headset's hardware, Oculus-made interface software, and demo some of the first games being sold on this platform. Plus, weird Gear VR eyes!

+illGottenGains 20 years ago a simple calculator-like lcd display mobile phone was cool. Colors were just a dream. Having an antenna shorter than 5cm was cool. Tetris and minesweeper were the future, who had those games on a phone was very cool. Now people say that Note 5 is out and Note 4 sucks. It's amazing how technology evolves, and that's all thanks to the consumers that get excited about any new feature.

Just ordered the samsung gear vr in the UK but didn't order the one with a gamepad (I wanted the gamepad but didn't check the deal) what are my options do i now need to buy a samsung gamepad or will any blutooth gamepad work? Does anybody know what gampad would be best?

Donny Fast cheers. I think from what I've been told any blutooth gamepad will work. I need to get one cos I think dreadhalls requires a gamepad. And from the reviews I've seen I really want to try dreadhalls
Hey guys love your stuff..FYI you can change the position of your seating in the Oculus Cinema with your bluetooth controller i think its the trigger button ..i forgot which one.

I demo these at an event in LA and I was surprised with how clear it was bcuz I have astigmatism but I barely had to move the knob to get a clear clean view

Just bought one of these off ebay for my Note 4. Bummed the Note 4 was left out of the consumer edition but with replaceable batteries I don't mind draining one. Thanks for this in depth look it helped me make my decision!
There are many Cardboard games on Google Play, but in normally you can not Run it on Samsung GEar VR. For Gear VR lovers, there is a solution to Play CardBoard games on GearVR headset. You need to Go Google Play and search "Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR" tool with blue icon. hope this can help

amazing video guys, I loved it. There are a lot of useless comments on youtube so I will try to be as constructive and helpful as possible with this one. I really enjoyed watching the video, you give accurate and important info. Norm, You often go into details about the small features (like that option with the calibration) too much as where you could have focused on other things. Will, You do more of the talking but never actually try on the Gear VR; We only hear about Norm's opinions on the Gear VR but less your opinion on it. Considering how much stress it puts on processing and battery, wonder if it would fry your phone with excessive use, or even short term use?
That head strap with no phone was killing me Norm hahaha so good.
The void option for watching movies gives you the largest screen, plus you can make that screen bigger or smaller.
If you have game controller hooked up you can change seat position in oculus theater via controller. Also the gyro sensors are actually built into gearvr as they are more accurate than the phone ones
The second foam included in the box is different, it has an area for the nose.
You can change seat in Oculus Cinema using a Gamepad button !

Tested , there used to be an amusement park in MA, that had a "180° theater". Basically what they did, was project movies up onto a half dome, giving you the feeling of being inside the movie. I was a little kid, and it made me queasy, because the movie was filmed using helicopter fly over.
I like this and want to see more VR.

The three screen movie showed at Cinequest this year with Ruin and other shorts. Unfortunately I didn't catch it to see how good it was but ask around, someone might have seen it in action.

I would personally like to see a bit more of the Gear VR, as I'm curious how the mobile VR experience is panning out.
If you could make another video and focus on perhaps more games, as well as the theoretical advantages of the Gear over something like the Rift, or Vive then I would be happy.

tested a EvE game on this during the EvE fanfest, was a fully working level for a kind of space invaders, was mind blowing, when i tried it i actually had no idea it was on a phone it was that amazing, was so surprised to find it was a phone game! hats of to them tho this really did work well.
You can change the seat place at the cinema. You need the blutooth pad 😊
I'm curious about AR games with this. Is there anything that uses the pass-through camera function as part of the game at all or maybe direction or translation type HUD effects?
I wanna use that passthrough camera with a fisheye, that would be so trippy!

NoLimits Coaster 2 or some other coaster sim would be ideal for mobile VR, because it's a passive, seated experience where you mainly just look forward, and yet still offers high intensity from the sense of speed and depth that comes with stereoscopic vision.
I love the idea. I was wondering is it upgrade-able in software or do you think I should wait for the Note 5 and get the system with that?

I wished you kept with the native view and not split screen, I brought this up in DK2 and it was working fine until you did that. I would have really seen what the pass through looked like in VR.

I'm happy that vr technology is advancing.. Decades from now the vr's will be smaller that this kind of tech would just feel like an old vcr or console and we are the ones saying "back in our day..."

I definitely want to see more VR Content, but I would prefer some DK2 games too. The new Apollo 11 experience for instance was really good and I would like to hear the tested crew opinion on in.
Any issues using the amazon controller? in particular input lag concerns me, as I have had nothing but issues using controllers with my android phones lately.

They mentioned they where able to side load the app onto a world phone. I just bought Google cardboard off of tinydeal for about 3 bucks for my oneplus one. I wonder if the app would work on the opo? If so I think $3 is a fine price to pay for this experience.
We use omni-binaural mics in VR to keep your head in sync with the position of the mics. There is also software that can process the audio binaurally in real time.

You aren't supposed to look at all three screens. Still just the center and your peripherals take care of the outside 2.
I will become far more interested when the VR technologies all combine, (like the positional tracking and hand tracking stuff that the guys over at NODE are working on.)
