    Samsung Gear Vr still works pretty well as of Jan 10th 2024. Desktop VR, some music VR programs still work and Steam can still stream to it. Some of my favorites vanished awhile back but 80% of the stuff i bought still works. I hope they come back with just VR glasses that are lighter and less cumbersome. My only complaint was how hot it got to wear and it put pressure on my sinuses making it hard to breath though my nose.

      Unlike Apple Samsung took steps backward, I am guessing it's because the engagement back then used to be low and software itself was too much to handle all at a glance.

    I bought the Samsung Gear VR back in March 2017 with my S7 Galaxy, absolutey loved it and I still have a great memory of using it alot back then. I loved it so much that I also had the newer version with the controller which was amazing for clicking and pointing for shooter games and general nagivation. It had great potential and I was very sad when they stopped making them. I feel like they definitely went the wrong with it and it felt more like an accessory or gimmick with the phone rather than a full product by itself so it was always doomed to fail, the price point also made it feel cheap when you could buy it individually for basically nothing. I feel the worst thing about it was connecting the phone into it because it was very finicky and wasnt a good fit and also fell out or would disconnect occassionally, it would also overheat very fast and you'd get an error message saying your phone needs to cool down and you'd have to unplug it and start the process again, but the amount of games and VR videos were so much fun and I had some of the best gaming experience playing the "Face Your Fears" games that I've ever had in my life. Fast Forward to Dec 2023 and I've just sold both my Gear VRs so its time to say goodbye to it and pass it on, but I feel like this is perfect timing to let go of it with the new Apple Vision, VR Quest 3 & Playstation VR 2 coming out soon. Overall I enjoyed the Samsung Gear VR alot and have great memories of it and I hope they make another attempt at it again someday. So long Gear VR

    Oh i remember using the GearVR with a controller on a Note9. I had to buy the specific adapter too. I tried some demo games which looked good, but the main usage i got from it was... from questionable videos.
    But it really got me into VR which years later made me pick up a Oculus Rift CV1.

    If you do a video of software that Samsung that gave up on, here is one to start...
    -Dual pictures on S5 (of the subject and self at the same time)...used to love using it for taking pictures of my kids..
    -TOUCH SENSATIVITY - could use a regular pen on it! ! (gloves etc)
    -Direction Unlock (swipe in different directions to unlock phone, gone after ui 2.5)
    -Iris Scanner
    Im sure there are much much more, just these come to mind quickly...
    and galaxy hardware innovation they gave up on...
    - IR Blaster - last on s5 / note 4
    - LED Indicator
    - Classic Flip Cases with a window
    - Micro SD Card Slot (willing to pay a premium, even if on 1TB model only)
    - Bixby / Side Key - Remappable
    - Gear & Gear2 - Camera AND IR Blaster
    - Removable Back Cover - hot swap micro SD card/remove battery (AND still Qi compatible)
    - Physical Fingerprint (faster and can do it: without looking @ phone /while picking up phone)
    - Heart Rate Sensor
    *Will NOT mention headphone jack, although has merits
    gold pins/removable back which enabled s5 / note 4 to have Qi charging and a version of magnetic charging case called Anymode/Fuel Ion, it would thourougly impress people, a case that would simply latch on to special stands, car mounts or simply a wire, hold in place and charge at the same time!
    Those pins were soo unique, and opened up a lot of potential gadgets.

    It's not Samsung giving up it wasn't even their software it was Oculus. But what are you going to do when everybody gives up at the time? I applaud companies for putting products out early and seeing what could be. Without the early renditions of VR there would be no Apple pro. And honestly, now Samsung can make one just as good as Apple and charge half as much. Furthermore it will be open source and not locked down lake Apple jail.

    As a regular user of GearVR in 2023, this was a fun watch.
    I also did a big ol 140+ app test to see what all does/doesn't work and found that more works than doesn't. Sad to see Samsung gave up on this because it's not a bad HMD experience. Kinda regret that I didn't get in earlier before they started delisting things. I'd love to have Minecraft tied to my account

    • @ALionlikeMane
      @ALionlikeMane Год назад

      @@barenggaoretelelwe3693 I'm bouncing between a Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy Note 8. The Note 8 obviously is a better overall experience, but S7 is obviously much sharper... and there's some games like the Adventure Time: Magic Man's Head Games that only work on my S7 and below.
      The best phone to use for GearVR _was_ easily the Galaxy S10... but as of OneUI4 the S10 no longer supports GearVR. Now I think the S9 is the sweet spot between power, functionality and PPI as it pertains to GearVR.

    • @ALionlikeMane
      @ALionlikeMane Год назад

      @@barenggaoretelelwe3693 there's still quite a lot of good stuff here.
      If you've already used GearVR before, you don't have to screw with all the insane account setup tricks needed to log in. If you haven't, head on over to the GearVR subreddit - many great tutorials on getting accounts working if you didn't make one before the cutoff.
      That said, here's some of the good stuff. Skybox is amazing for playing all variants of 3D video as well as 180 and 360 video. I find that to be better than the built in player in terms of options, reliability and codec support. You can still access boatloads of user created video content through Oculus Video. Prime Video's still a great experience on GearVR as is RUclips. I've recently gotten into watching 360 concerts on RUclips through GearVR. Wander still works, letting you explore the world in VR.
      Tons of games still work... Along Together, Witchblood, Bionic Hunter, Beyond Hirieth, The Knight of Queen, End Space, The Well and Death Horizon are some very good games that immediately come to mind. A lot of the online games like VR Arena and Stickman Counter Terror Strike still allow bot battles offline. You can sideload and have a fully untethered (albeit dated) version of Minecraft wherever you go too.
      Phonecast is also a very big one. Despite the "cast" in it's name, Phonecast is the gateway to using a lot of your local non-GearVR apps. A few seconds of settings tweaks will let you use ANY Android app through your VR headset. So if you have controller-based Android games, or you wanna stream Xbox GamePass, Steam Link, etc, Phonecast will let you do it on a very large virtual screen. I'd been streaming Xbox on GearVR for so long now that it felt weird when they announced the feature was coming to MQ3... like I thought for sure MQ3 already had Xbox since my ancient GearVR headset allowed it through Phonecast.

  • @aaron6235

    The persistent problem with vr is that it is niche. You have 2 categories or people. One is were I fit in. This category has no motions sickness and is completely blown away from the thing you can do in vr. Then you have the other category. This is the group of people that immediately get motion sickness and don't like the hassle of strapping a box to your head to watch youtube.
    Most tech companies are trying to make vr mainstream with a unified all in one device. The problem is that there are different categories of vr that require a specific device. I personally think that apple will fail where samsung failed because of the problems i mentioned. Hope I'm wrong, because I love vr lol

  • @Joric78
    @Joric78 11 месяцев назад

    Looks like the Vision Pro release convinced Samsung to reboot VR development, but calling the Vision Pro a development of the GearVR idea significantly unplays the developments in the VR space and who was responsible for them. Samsung didn't stop with the GearVR either, you're forgetting their Windows Mixed Reality headset, the Odyssey+. That was dedicated VR hardware. GearVR was more a refined Google Cardboard using Oculus/Lucky Palmer's developments. An entry point and a novelty item. Even in 2014 there was a large gulf between the Oculus developer headsets and the mobile phone holders in terms of capabilities and experience. If you've used PCVR or a Quest Pro/3 by now you should realise the extreme limitations of mobile accessory VR headsets in comparison. Primarily in terms of the display/lens stack, camera placement, tracking (including eye, face and hand tracking) and passthrough for mixed reality.
