  • I was recently asked by a couple of subscribers about the sharpening kit that I use for my hook knives and what process I go through. So in this video I try and oblige and show you how I go about it and the tools that I use. I am no expert by any means, but I manage to keep the knives in working order. Thanks for watching...….

      Good morning Wade :) I hope you are keeping well mate. I agree, nothing nice than using sharp tools. I find it makes for a more pleasurable carving session if you can keep things in good working order. The lads I work with think I'm daft when I tell them to clean and check their tools and gear at the end of the day. It was the way I was brought up. Look after you gear and it will look after you :) Saying that I drive a car that is a heap of crap and never gets looked after lol. Thanks as always Wade, it is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)

    Nice one Mark. They say you can judge the quality of a tradesman by looking at the condition of his tools 🙂. In that case my friend you are a master tradesman. Your kit is used for the purpose intended but equally looked after and maintained 👍. Nice job and tutorial, tips on sharpening 👍. Great job. I was rooting about in our Atic the other day looking for an old belt with the plan of making a strop 🙂. Might knock one up later today. Cheers Mark, fantastic to watch as always, have a great day 👍. Just off out to try and photograph a family of Kingfishers 🙂

      Hi Rick, I hope you are keeping well mate and everything is going OK :) LOL, I picked my habits up when I first left school. I am a Glazier by trade, going back 30 years ago and the old boys who taught me were sticklers for everything being clean, sharp, and ready for the morning. I just stuck with it lol. Good luck with getting the pics :) They are quite easy to photograph if you know where the live or where their main feeding areas are. Otherwise I find them too fast. Great looking birds, them and Jays :) Thanks as always for watching and for the great comment :) Have a top week mate, all the best, Mark.

    Hi Mark,
    another very informative video, well put together and as always well presented.
    Nice tip you shared using the marker pen to colour the edge of the knife, that makes so much sense.
    The soft hide raps are a nice touch too.
    Great little maintenance kit, although I must say for stropping the inside edge your homemade dowel strop looks more comfortable to use, it just looks more ergonomic, nice.
    I was looking forward to this video after you mentioned it on your last video, and I wasn't disappointed.
    Many thanks for sharing, have a great weekend Mark,
    atb, Paul.

      Hi Paul, I hope you are having a great weekend :) Many thanks a s always for watching and for the great comment. It is always nice to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it is nice of you to say :) I tend to use a marker pen when sharpening most of my knives. You would be amazed how often you think you have the knife at the correct angle, then after a couple of passes see that you hadn't. Plus it helps to show if the stone is slightly dished and ready to be re flattened with a levelling stone. Thanks again Paul :) All the best, Mark :)

      Hi Matt, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment :) I was pretty surprised by how good autosol works. It is a lot cheaper than Tormek and seems to work just as well. I used to find I was having to clean the strops out quite regularly when I used the blocks of compound, but these types make it a lot quicker and easier :) Easier in my book is a good thing lol. Thanks as always Matt :) Have a great week mate, all the best, Mark :)

    Nice one Mark, I need to make myself one of those cylindrical leather strips for my hook knife. Gets a bit challenging Sharpening it on a flat strop, especially with the pronounced, double-edged, curved blade the mora has. Thanks for sharing mate, take care.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      Hi Andy, cheers mate :) Yeah, they are really simple to make. It was an old scrap piece I had and the dowel you can pick up from B&Q :) You can also make a stop from a piece of pine edging, again from B&Q. I made some about 1" wide by 8mm thick and glued a piece of thin leather all the way around, and these worked well for the outside bevel. Thanks as always Andy, have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

    Ive just bought my first set of wood carving knifes Mark, do this video will be really handy come sharpening time even though it does look quite difficult, I struggle sharpening my Bushcraft knife and axe haha.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      Hi Ant, many thanks for watching mate and for the comment, it is always great to hear from you :) Yeah they can seem tricky to sharpen at first. But with a bit of practice and confidence it soon becomes easy and just a part of carving. If you check out Ben Orford's you tube channel he has loads of good videos on sharpening axes, knives and his wood carving tools. I love the wood spirits. I have seen some stunning pieces carved into trees and wooden posts. I keep meaning to give them a try sometime. I just end up carving spoons, spatulas and mushrooms and leave them for folk to find and pick up. Maybe a few wood spirits would make a nice change :) Cheers Ant, all the best, Mark :)

Long days working at the fishery and non stop lifting, chopping and cutting, getting the place ready for the season. I may take you up on the three cheeseburgers though. I haven't had a decent burger in years. Even though they like to say authentic US burgers, I'm sure they are nothing like you get in the US. Mainly gristle and bones lol. You need the cheese and ketchup to hide the flavour lol. Thanks again Rich, it is always great to hear from you :) All the best, Mark.

    Great video as always Mark and a great sharpening kit I paid £50 for mine from a online bushcraft store and it turns out that the place that makes the set I got is just down the road from me. I've not had much chance to use it yet as I've only carved one spoon months ago now but I was waiting to oil it before I put the video on you tube. The spoon isn't brilliant as it was my first attempt at carving a spoon and the first time using the tools pluss I had to concentrate on filming it to😁👍

      Good morning Carl, I hope life down in the beautiful SW is treating you well mate :) I find when it comes to sharpening carving tools, especially the hook knives, it is down to practice and confidence. Once you have done it a few times it becomes way easier. I started with the finest grits at first, so if I balls it up I didn't take too much steel away lol. Then you find the method that works best for you :) LOL, that is always the case mate. I had a similar experience with a jacket I recently bought. I sent it back twice as it was the wrong size, then colour that they sent, only to realise the shop was 10 miles away and I could of drove there an sorted it out. At least you know you have a local company you can go to and get things when you need them. I will look forward to your video Carl.... have a great week mate, all the best, Mark :)

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Poly-Wog Bushcraft, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) The compound in the yellow tube is called Tormek paste. I think it is a Swedish make. Great stuff :) I also use a polishing compound in a black tube which is called Auto-sol. You can pick that up from most car repair shops. Both work really well, but the Auto-sol is slightly cheaper and it is a larger sized tube. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)
