Don't gear down in an automatic transmission on slippery conditions.
When braking in an automatic transmission, there is residual forward push from the transmission.
Push the transmission selector into neutral when coming to a stop on slippery conditions.
By doing so you disconnect the drivetrain from the engine.
You have better control with the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop.
If the vehicle starts to break traction, simply release the brakes and re-apply.
Good luck on your road test.

Never drive in neutral even with a manual gear never! If you have automatic one is better drive in second gear on icy roads

A compromise is to pump the brakes slowly.

@smartdrivetest It irresponsible of you to post this video, the transmission itself will act as a a brake, its called engine braking. While it is better on manual transmissions it is also happening in automatics. It is actually MUCH better to use this than the brakes, just let the transmission slow you down and you will never have the wheels lock up, you will always have steering control this way, if anything the better advice would be to put it into 2nd gear or "M2", this is the best gear for reduced initial engine power so that you dont spin the wheels and it also has the best engine braking performance. There is no "residual power" gas off = no power.

Do NOT do this, please. Your transmission will lower gears, providing more stopping power.

Or just buy a manual transmission

even in a manual trans you dont put it to neutral for "better braking in the wintertime" you gear down while applying the brakes

No put it in manual mode you can force it to downshift earlier

See this vid: ruclips.net/video/2fEJL0NHqsA/видео.html Leave the button alone, and the selector will stop in neutral. It' won't go into either reverse or park. The selector will move back and forth from drive to neutral. All the best, Cheers Rick

you should not do anything shown in this video at all it is completely wrong and could possibly lead to you getting hurt or hurting someone else, if you do what's shown in this video you WILL loose breaking power and Infact in situations where urgent breaking is not required you're better off just going off the gas and slowing down without the breaks as the engine has friction when you aren't putting fuel into it by pushing the gas pedal

    • @samuellewis48
      @samuellewis48 3 месяца назад +1

do not use this technique it is completely wrong and actually decreases braking performance, when your foot goes off the gas pedal there is no longer gas going into your engine it isn't creating power and is therefore just friction, leaving your vehicle in gear allows that friction to resist the wheels spinning slowing you down and it's preferable to braking if urgently stopping isn't needed as it's less wear in your breaks and especially in winter allows you to have very good control of the vehicle. also if there is some emergency where you need to quickly accelerate not having your vehicle in gear instantly removes that as an option and adds one more step in preventing an accident. please do not take advice from this video it's wrong and could get you hurt.

@@smartdrivetestfirst, the car is always traction limited when braking, meaning you never worry about not enough braking force. You worry about braking too hard. Also, there is no “residual power” as soon as your foot is off the gas. And switching gear will mess up with the operation of ABS or traction control, especially when they are about to or already activated. So this technique will only cause driver fatigue/distraction, rather than better braking performance

@@smartdrivetestyou need to be in gear at all times, because if you're in neutral and braking, if somebody is coming up behind you really fast, you can accelerate just buy stepping on the gas, that's why in manuals you gear down with rev matching to make sure that you have easy control over your car at all times
