Sadly, we don’t have a driving school where I live (Saipan). The only teachers are parents or relatives. Because of that, I am scared to drive because there wasn’t a professional teaching me. I am 32, and I never got a driving license nor have I ever been confident enough to drive until recently. Your videos are very helpful, especially for those like me who are afraid to drive.

A question ❓ Does this apply to every state? I live in Washington and my husband is teaching me to drive and I want to make sure I will pass the test. thank you in advance
I am currently taking my son out to drive in preparation for his road test 2 months from now. He took driving instructions here in Ontario, Canada; where the instructor taught him hand over hand. Well, he finds it too tricky to maneuver using hand over hand, and his driving instruction through Young Drivers has ended. Now, I go out driving with him, and I didn’t learn to drive using hand over hand. I find it really difficult to turn using this technique. Guess I need to teach myself it ; (your video helps, thank you!); so I can help him with it!
Hi Rick, thank you so much for all your help..im a beginner and I'm from Jamaica where we drive on the left , however our roads have a a lot of corners, and I'm having trouble turning, sometimes I don't know how much to turn depending on the corner but I'm positive and your videos are giving me a lot of confidence

Hello, first of all I just wanted to say that your videos are simply amazing. I will be giving my road test next week and you have cleared so many things for me. Just a quick question, can I be failed in a road test in Alberta for turning using hand-to-hand technique instead of hand-over-hand?
Hi Adnan Ahmed Malik - Thank you for your comment. You're going to do awesome. You can't be failed for using hand-to-hand, but you want to try and do as many techniques and manoeuvres in the way that the examiner expects them. In other words, if you test centre uses hand-over-hand you want to try and do that just to "go with the flow" so to speak. Remember to breath; that will cause your body to relax. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

Sometimes it can be a bit rocket science to maneuver the steering wheel by default (hand over hand). I did my exam two times, the first, they told me that i didn't pass because a right turn with red light but i really don't remember to did it wrong, i was a little upset about it, so i didn't came. Today it was my second chance and I pass. I am super happy!!! 🙂👍🏻🎉 Thank you for your videos!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Rick, I have my license and I drive by myself but mostly short distances. I am still somewhat nervous/anxious about driving and I'm not sure why? Any ideas, or do I simply need to be more confident? I mostly get nervous when I'm on unfamiliar roads, and I have trouble with bay parking. Thanks
I live in Sweden and ive been taught the hand to hand method. The instructor said that hand over hand steering is not safe because your arms can break if you have them infront of the airbag if it goes off. If you have a watch on it can hit you in the head and possibly kill you.
That was once true. Air bag tech works differently now and is less violent. As well, when these deploy is more complicated due to advances in sensors. So it’s unlikely that you’re going to have any injuries owing to air bag deployment. But go with that for your test. After you get your license you can figure out what works for you. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hey Rick (me again) in Australia we do push-pull (hand-to-hand) for light vehicles because we don't want to have our arms between the airbag in the centre of the steering wheel and our face if there's a frontal collision when turning across traffic etc.

@@smartdrivetest *"I don't like that method because it's too slow."* I keep hearing this, but don't see why it matters at anything other than pulling away and/or parking speed (and even then, I'm not convinced crossing hands is faster). Above that, why on earth would you _need_ to apply so much lock in a hurry - unless you're trying to roll the vehicle?! I've always used push-pull, because my hands get in a tangle when I try to cross hands! I've never had any problem with this method, even in the tightest spots. We're all different, and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter as long as you steer safely and under full control. Thanks for some very interesting and thought provoking videos. I love them.

Thank you. I was taught hand over hand . The tighter the turn the further over you reach over with the hand crossing over to the opposite side of the curb. I do have a question though. I drive manual and there are a lot of long straight lonely roads where I live. When driving in a straight line for a while, how should my hands be positioned? Controlling the steering wheel is difficult for me. I have had a couple of lessons so far. I have no experience with cars (I might as well be piloting a plane) and my instructors speak to me as if I should know the right amount of control to have with a steering wheel this early on, particularly when it comes to turns and parking and they aren't particularly helpful with only letting me practice for wheel control (and getting comfortable with the proper amount of pressure to apply to the pedals). I can't feel when the car is straight or not (with parallel parking). I guess it is just going to take practice, but I worry that they are only teaching to pass the test rather than ensuring I truly understand and feel comfortable with how to maneuver the car. All my lessons have been very early in the morning when there are very few cars on the road because I just don't feel confident in controlling the wheel enough. I live in NYC by the way and I learn in a very specific way and the way they teach is not really conducive to the way I typically learn. I don't really have drivers in my life to let me practice so I can only rely on these professional schools and even when telling them that I am really a novice and am not comfortable with the workings of the car, they still just put me on the road and expect me to understand how to control the car in a mediocre way in actual traffic. Then they tell me rules while I am trying to focus on controlling the wheel without practice and they think I am retaining what they are saying when I am focusing on the basics that I should have been learning and feeling comfortable with beforehand. It's very difficult for me. I feel like it will take me forever and much, much money before I even remotely feel comfortable taking my road test. It's very aggravating. Thank you for these videos. They do help me to visualize in my mind before my actual lessons.
Hi Winter S - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. It is unfortunate when driving lessons aren't tailored to the student's need or abilities. I get more comfortable with each lesson, but it will still take me a while before I feel anywhere close to ready to take my road test with any kind of confidence. I am in no rush, however. I have the luxury of taking my time and as many (costly) lessons as I feel I need to be confident.
It takes practice to get use to the car and getting the grip for the steering wheel. Practice is key with the steering wheel, my advice is that go out with your parents or instructor early morning at around 7 or 8am where there is no traffic out on the road and you can go nice slow and get a feel for the wheel, OR go to a big mall parking lot and due some turns with the car and see how the car reacts to it! You will do just fine, and keep up the hard work!
Hi Rikchina R Marak - thank you for your comment and query. Apologies, I'm not clear on what you're asking - can you reword you request and I'll be happy to help out. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rikchina R Marak - thank you for clarifying. When you say that the engine dies, does it break down or stall because there isn't enough power for the vehicle to make it up the hill? And if it's the latter, is it an automatic or manual transmission? Thanks Cheers Rick
I had a driving teacher that wouldn't let me have the steering wheel slip through my fingers, so now I found myself having to trace the wheel hand over have easing the wheel straight after executing the turn, I would definitely find it more easy to let the wheel slip through..
@@smartdrivetest so upon going to the place of my test it looks like it will be around my town but they have cones for the parallel parking itself, the good thing is that I been driving around town, my test was officially an hour away but I scheduled it for my town as they just reopened after the pandemic had them all far away, I'm in Minnesota have had alot of winter driving..
Hi Daljit Johal - You are correct. If you're going slower, you'll have to manipulate the steering wheel back to the straight position. All the best, Cheers Rick
You are doing a great service, sir. Thank you. I had a question specifically about steering. I am finding that I have no trouble doing a left turn from, say, an intersection. However, right turns, especially after having come to a total stop at a stop sign, is proving still a bit of a problem for me. I am finding that when making a right turn, I am not accustomed to doing a proper hand-over-hand turn. So, when turning right, do you normally push with your left hand first or pull down with your right hand first?
Hi Ravikant Rai - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your question. I believe the reason you're having difficulty is because you're doing hand-to-hand rather than hand-over-hand. You'll find that hand-over-hand is faster than the other method. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest No problem, thank you very much for responding. I have gotten better since and do hand over hand now. The only issue I face now is when i am turning, even on wider roads, i look at other drivers in the rear view mirror and feel the need to keep my speed a little higher, same as others around me, and I end up sometimes not doing a smooth enough turn. Fortunately this is not always the case. I noticed this happens when i don't have to stop on a left turn lane at an intersection. Because there is a green light and ample space between oncoming traffic and myself.
i understand different roads have different angles, could you please do a video regarding how much to steer the wheel while turning right/left, and when roughly to steer the wheel back? for me,, while i am driving, i cant remember whether i have turned half a wheel or a whole wheel ...... I believe that in the UK "Push,Pull" (hand to hand) is taught in anticipation of drivers going on to drive heavier vehicles' with a flatter steering wheel. Most people give it up one they've passed their "practical test" though! :)
Hi Martin Tabony - thanks for your comment. You are right about most drivers giving up the push-pull method of steering after they get their licence - it's slow and inefficient. If there's anything specific we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Thanks, Cheers Rick
The method is called 'pull-push' because it is initiated by a pull. It is good practice to precipitate the turn by moving your hand to the top of the steering wheel which allows the initial input to be smoother and longer, and enables momentum to be gained before the hands switch at the bottom. This method requires anticipation. Usually, if initiated from the 10-2 or 9-3 position, the input will be jerky and very slow. While I think pull-push is quick enough for normal road usage if executed properly, the major disadvantage is that you lose your ability to gauge the amount of steering being applied. It's not a terrible method but rotational steering is probably better for most people.
While doing a shoulder check, my steering wheel doesn't remain steady. It goes in the direction of my neck. Can you please suggest a technique for a better control of steering wheel while doing a shoulder check?
I really don't know witch one to do cause on my test I turned with on hand I asked if allowed to do it with one but she didn't answer back so I just went with which for me was the easiest and smoothest choice
wondering if you have a video on when to brake, i have a terrible tendency to either not start braking early enough and going over the line or braking too early

Will I fail my road test if I don't do hand-over-hand when turning? I am taking my test in a couple of days (in Alberta), but just realized I have never practiced hand-over-hand and don't feel comfortable doing it. Will they fail me for it? Is it okay to just turn without doing it?
Hi Saahodra Singh - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. How are the driving lessons going my friend? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Just curious, I'm going for my g1 exit test in june. When i turn am I allowed to have one hand kind of off the steering wheel? Or must there be constant double handed touch?(im ontario so i dont know if there would be a difference) I kind of ghost the hand that isnt taking the turn over the wheel while keeping light contact for example having the wheel run against my palm at the base of my fingers. I dont want to fail and ive been practising going around blocks, taking turns checking my mirrors and blind spots ect. I feel good and comfortable with it i just want to make sure i dont mess up by having incorrect hand positions or doing something wrong. The ontario book says while driving to keep my hands at 3 and 9 if that helps any, many thanks if ypu can offer any help!
Hi Laila Pierce - you can have your hands as they are in the video my friend. Yes, you must have 2 hands on the wheel for the duration of the test. And keep your palms in contact - no one handed steering except when reversing. And they're not rigid on the 3 and 9 - it can 2 and 10 or 8 & 4. So long as you're comfortable and have 2 hands in contact wit the steering wheel. See this vid too: ruclips.net/video/BN_JL3A_ftk/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick

Nice to meet you.

I'm worried because I have mild cerebral palsy in my right side (mostly only affects the right arm) I have been too scared to learn how to drive because of my disability for years now and turning is one of the biggest issues I think i'm going to have.. living in northern BC doesn't help much because you pretty much need your license.

Sometimes it can be a bit rocket science to maneuver the steering wheel by default (hand over hand). @@gabrielle9958 that true.

Hi dearjem - Thank you for your comment. And yes, many European countries use hand-to-hand; however, I don't like that method because it's too slow.
I love them.
one examiner in Oshawa, Ontario pointed my student to recover the steering manually or by-force and asked not to let steering wheel spins back automatically by relaxing the grip. This is the first time it happened and I have never heard about it before... please shed some light if possible.
I failed my road test because I was over and undesteering. I almost passed the second time I took the road test but when I hit a cone it forfeit my entire road test. I was doing well and then I hit a cone and it was frustrating. I have a driving lesson this afternoon at 4 pm. I am a forty-one year old new driver in NJ! I've been driving for over a year, but I have to pass my road test to get my provisional license upgrade!
Great driving lesson,thanks
Hi Hùng Kiệt - Thank you for your comment and great compliment. And you are most welcome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
hi rick..just a quick question...i'm a petite lady,is it ok to use a pillow to sit in during driving exam, for a more comfortable driving and better road surveying?thanks and more power!hoping for a response soon.
Hi sexy chef - Thank you for your question. Yes, if you need a pillow for a boost to control the vehicle better, use a pillow my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you. I was taught hand over hand . The tighter the turn the further over you reach over with the hand crossing over to the opposite side of the curb.
I do have a question though. I drive manual and there are a lot of long straight lonely roads where I live. When driving in a straight line for a while, how should my hands be positioned? I have a habit of keeping one hand at 8 o'clock and the other on the arm rest, but I get wrist trouble on my left. I'm trying to see if it's me or the car.
🤗it's useful for beginners !
Hi Valerii M - yes, it was designed for very beginning drivers. How's your weather? We are in a deep freeze here - minus double digit C. Another week of the deep freeze. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Hi,Rick! There is -17 gr. C ,some snow 🌨✌🏻️
Hi Valerii M - it is about the same here, but not as cold -15°C at night. I made a skating rink for my kids in the backyard. Stay warm - Cheers Rick
Here in Czech Republic uses hand-over-hand as just like you're explaination, it is advised to always hold the steering wheel.
Is that a good question to ask before you leave the parking lot, if the instructor prefers hand over hand or hand to hand? I take my test Oct 26th in BC.
It’s hand-over-hand for the test my friend. Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thank you Rick! Just had a friend of mine fail for going 2 over in a school zone and going ten under when pedestrians were in a neighbourhood.
@@smartdrivetest soo yeah I know it’s a month away I practice daily but man am I nervous still lol

Hi Rick!I want you to make a video about getting out of a tight parallel parking space.Im new driver and I have difficulties to understand the volume of my vehicle. I don't know how close I am from the parking vehicles in front and behind me.If you have any tips about that please tell me!!
Hi andrew Vts - Thank you for your comment. And these videos will help you learn where your vehicle is in space and place: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/7pWQMIaSLAo/видео.html Be sure to do the 2X4 exercise. Are u still allowed to do hand to hand in the US for ur test?
Hi Emily Rogers - Thank you for your comment and query. You can, but I would consult a local driving school for that specific information. Hand-over-hand works better in my opinion. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Going for my road test soon. Been watching these videos to help out with my anxiety actually. Thanks for the great videos. Also how do you find the 45 Degree marker in your vehicle. Biggest hurdle for me is Parallel Parking.
Hi Jesse: Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. The 45 degree marker should be just to the left of the edge of the windshield in your vehicle. Look in that direction and find a landmark. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
It is unfortunate when driving lessons aren't tailored to the student's need or abilities. i'm in the same boat! how is your driving now?
I get more comfortable with each lesson, but it will still take me a while before I feel anywhere close to ready to take my road test with any kind of confidence. I am in no rush, however. I have the luxury of taking my time and as many (costly) lessons as I feel I need to be confident.
Winter S I know what you mean... i'm still nervous and that's what's messing me up. i have to work on that.
Rick what is the meaning by steering control - wanders/recovery?
hello! your videos are so clear. i would just like to request you to show me what to do if i'm stuck while driving in a high road. thank you
Hi Rikchina R Marak - thank you for your comment and query. Apologies, I'm not clear on what you're asking - can you reword you request and I'll be happy to help out. All the best, Cheers Rick
What i meant was if i'm driving a slope or uphill road and all of a sudden the engine dies. What should i do in that situation? thanks for replying..
Hi Rikchina R Marak - thank you for clarifying. When you say that the engine dies, does it break down or stall because there isn't enough power for the vehicle to make it up the hill? And if it's the latter, is it an automatic or manual transmission? Thanks Cheers Rick
I'm learning how to drive and I'm scared to drive in a hilly area thinking about the car stopping all of a sudden.
I had a driving teacher that wouldn't let me have the steering wheel slip through my fingers, so now I found myself having to trace the wheel hand over have easing the wheel straight after executing the turn, I would definitely find it more easy to let the wheel slip through..
It is a lot easier my friend. I really don’t understand why some make it far more difficult than it needs to be!?! All the best, Cheers Rick
Opening hands to return steering wheel can be quick or to slow it depends on car speed?
In that situation I feel like if I brake a bit more, I might get rear ended by the person behind me.
thx man
Hi azenh - you are most welcome my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
i understand different roads have different angles, could you please do a video regarding how much to steer the wheel while turning right/left, and when roughly to steer the wheel back? for me,, while i am driving, i cant remember whether i have turned half a wheel or a whole wheel ...... I know i suck at driving. Thank you!
Hi Xian Wang - you don't suck; you are simply learning. And learning takes time. The only thing that stands between you and success is time and space. You are going to get it. Have a look at these videos: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/w3Dc8k1jOq8/видео.html If you spend the time becoming competent with the basics, it will improve your overall driving. How do you do it in the cdl b dump truck my test is Friday
Where in the world are you my friend? Cheers Rick
You’re turning your head too slow. Faster turning of the head will correct the issue. Cheers Rick
I really don't know witch one to do cause on my test I turned with on hand I asked if allowed to do it with one but she didn't answer back so I just went with which for me was the easiest and smoothest choice
Hi Juan Padron - Thank you for your comment. Where in the world are you taking your test my friend? All the best, Cheers Rick
Can you do a video for Colorado
wondering if you have a video on when to brake, i have a terrible tendency to either not start braking early enough and going over the line or braking too early

Hi, are you able to do a video on how far to turn the steering wheel in curves on the road and freeway?
Hi Samuel - thank you for your comment and request. I'll add the video to the list and let you know when I get it available. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Will I fail my road test if I don't do hand-over-hand when turning? I am taking my test in a couple of days (in Alberta), but just realized I have never practiced hand-over-hand and don't feel comfortable doing it. Will they fail me for it? Is it okay to just turn without doing it?
When I asked to go practice in a parking lot my instructor said NO :-(
Hi Saahodra Singh - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. How are the driving lessons going my friend? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
My best Tr in Europe, love from Uganda east Africa 🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬
Thank you

You're more helpful than my driving instructor, to be honest. Thank a lot, Rick!
Wow, thanks! Cheers Rick
Can we use a combination of both techniques on a road test??
Hi Munira Jilani - Thank you for your comment. Yes you can use a combination - just don't let go of the steering wheel. Keep both hand on the wheel for the duration of the drive. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I got my temporary license on my first try. Only thing I’m truly working on is my hand over hand. Everything else I’m pretty good with.
