    That's what I usually eat daily.. lots of boiled or baked potatoes with broccoli and peppers ((with some seasonings like chili/garlic/onion/cayenne powder added to the dish). Sometimes I'll just have plenty of potatoes and nothing else or maybe add fruit. I've noticed that everything tastes different afterwards. Most unhealthy foods either taste like a chemical or rotten. It's weird. My gray hairs are turning dark brown/black again too.

    I went from 190 pounds to 160 pounds in four months. Eating all potato diet, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes. My friend told me I wasn’t going to lose weight eating that many carbs. While they were eating bacon and hamburgers, and chicken And steaks their weight stayed the same and they were calorie restricting I ate until I was full twice a day, and the weight fell off. I’ve never been a breakfast person. I like to have my lunch between 11 and two. I wake up around 5:30 in the morning the last thing I’m thinking about is food.

      So you lost less than 10 pounds per month eating only potatoes? Every other anecdote I’ve heard about the potato diet results in much more weight loss than that.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 4 месяца назад

      Your friend doesn't sound very informed but was probably voicing their concerns if I give the benefit of the doubt. But obviously different approaches do work for different people, otherwise no-one would stick with (insert diet here) for more than a month.
      It's been a looooong time since I saw "lessons from the vegans" by Denise Minger but iirc it confirmed the idea that macro dominant diets/ways of eating (diets/ways of eating where either carbs or dietary fat comprised most of the calorie intake) such as high carb low fat and low carb high fat both performed better at facilitating weight loss than mixed macro diets/ways of eating because of metabolic advantages of the macro dominant diets.
      This holds true for me as well. But my body seems to be rather sensitive to it so my weight loss slows down when I introduce too much fat (an amount that otherwise still works for other people) on HCLF or too much carb and protein on LCHF (amounts other people don't seem to have issues with).
      I prefer starch based HCLF for financial reasons.

    • @amelia.rosiee
      @amelia.rosiee 3 месяца назад +1

      He lost only 7 pounds a month probably because he was eating too many calories. Calories matter. I think the best thing is to eat only 1000 calories of potatoes, or 1500 calories if you’re active. If the blood sugar levels are low, it would be helpful to eat something sweet like dates.

    • @Lonwolf.
      @Lonwolf. 3 месяца назад +1

      @@amelia.rosiee the difference is potatoes are so filling for the volume. Eating meat and oil don’t give you that sense of fullness and satiation because of the lack of fiber. Five hours after eating a steak meal, you will definitely be hungry again there’s no fiber. Go eat a big thing of baked potato and sweet potato and five hours You won’t be hungry. that’s why potatoes help you lose weight better better because the volume and water in the food and mix with the fiber. That’s why you see a lot of overweight people who eat a lot of meat never lose the weight. You need carbs for energy and fiber to keep your mind intact so You don’t feel like you’re starving.

    Great video man. I did this for 6 days once and used it as a launching point to start a whole food plant based diet. Like you, I was interested in the flavor reset, which made going to the wfpb way of life easier when I broke the potato fast. I lost weight fast on the taters and continued to lose weight on the wfpb way of eating but much faster on the taters. My theory on the getting cold part is that so much fluid and inflammation comes off of u that u are not running hot all the time. On days 2 and 3, I was pissing so much but not drinking any more water. I now follow the "starch solution" plan and mostly eat UNPROCESSED starches like beans, rice, and more potatoes.

    Potatoes calm my digestion with their prebiotic fiber. They also lower my A1C. I'm trying to stay low-oil or no-oil as a diabetic, as fat/oil keeps my blood sugar high. Staying on high starch (potatoes, rice, oats) and veggies has allowed me to lose weight. There is a small amount of oil in a plant-based diet. I use the potato water (after boiling potatoes) in my vegetable soup. I respect your persistence in staying on unseasoned potatoes for 5 days. I think some would appreciate pepper and a little salt, especially as potatoes have potassium to balance the sodium.

    Great challenge, and a great report of how it all effected you. I have never had the desire to eat only potatoes as a stimulant challenge, but think I could have used it back when I was binging and eating compulsively. Seems like my whole life has been about food, fat, dieting, etc. Now, I let myself be focused on health which includes meal prep, and eating. I just look at it differently. That dirty little monster is still in me waiting to be awakened, but now I know to eat enough and make sure I get the foods that keep me satiated. Starches. I do prepare my meals salt, oil, and sugar free to avoid those stimulants, but allow some added salt at the table, if the food is too bland. Funny how things change, though. I usually don't want it. Thanks for the video.

    There is no question Dr. McDougall has helped many people. Early research on the potato diet dates back to at least 1920. The only problem I have with McDougall is that he shames people for eating meat/fish. Funny thing…his science is dead right but he and his wife look at least 15 years older than they are. Is it their genetics or following a diet with no oil? Bottom line: his “diet” saves lives and gets people out of pain. Tough to argue with that!

      I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer to this. It's not that the potatoes do something magical for your gut. The benefits come largely from cutting everything else out. Most people are eating things regularly that are actually really bad for them. The potato reset gives your gut a rest and chance to repair.
      Are cheese and milk and bacon good for you? I don't know, but by doing a reset and slowly adding foods back in you can find out.

    my understanding is, that potatoes come with a lot of potassium which aids weight loss.
    regarding the weight loss, i think it comes with a price to pay which means loss in lean mass as well.
    i try to do it for two days and then switch to a meat&eggs only diet for two days and restart with potatoes again.
    this way, i prevent lean mass loss. and, good idea, unseasoned and unsalted as well.
    we know that people on carnivore have a lot of success as well. but also not 100%.
    Cycling between the potato diet and the carnivore diet in a two-day rhythm might be something new and interesting and might combine the benefits of both diets without some of its drawbacks.
    one could come to the idea to combine potatoes and beef to a meal, it might taste great but it might stop working for weight loss because of a higher insulin level that blocks weight loss.
    think of the properties of a Japanese Damaskus knife with multiple layers of hard carbon steel and soft steel. if you would melt it together to a blended steel, it would result in something different.

    Hey Shane, I got a suggestion for an ikario experiment: Do a no caffeine experiment. No coffee, no green, black or white tea, no energy drinks no stimulating substances at all.
    I’m doing this right now and I’m on day 37 of my 90 days no caffeine challenge. I feel terrible and I’m slowly realizing how caffeine messed me up without realizing it. It’s almost like recovering from a long illness.
    Due to the fact that you and the ikario team are sharing your struggles, your health issues and challenges here (I deeply appreciate that) I know that some of you suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, muscles stiffness and depressive states. I know that these symptoms are often caused by many factors but they all can be related to caffeine consumption, so I think it might be worth your efforts. I’m suffering from all of these issues too a degree and now I’m experiencing a relieve from them without the caffeine. I know for sure that I’m not alone with this and many people don’t even realize how bad this caffeine addiction can be so it might be helpful for some people to get your take on this topic…
    For obvious reasons this cannot be a short 7 day challenge and it’s likely that it will be a terrible and unproductive time for some weeks….or maybe months so I understand any possible reluctances.
    (please read this with a light hearted sense of humor)
    But in the name of personal development:
    1. If you guys are caffeine addicts, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to function without any stimulating substances?
    2. Which beverages do they feed you with in the human zoo and why?
    Maybe you can riff on these questions in the podcast with Ollie….
    Thank you, Gregor

      Doing a 24-48 hour fast might help. It can help us learn that there's a difference between feeling hungry and simply having an empty stomach. Also, it teaches us that just because we're hungry doesn't mean we HAVE TO eat right away.
