I went from 190 pounds to 160 pounds in four months. Eating all potato diet, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes. My friend told me I wasn’t going to lose weight eating that many carbs. While they were eating bacon and hamburgers, and chicken And steaks their weight stayed the same and they were calorie restricting I ate until I was full twice a day, and the weight fell off. He lost only 7 pounds a month probably because he was eating too many calories. Calories matter. I think the best thing is to eat only 1000 calories of potatoes, or 1500 calories if you’re active. If the blood sugar levels are low, it would be helpful to eat something sweet like dates.

Great video man. I did this for 6 days once and used it as a launching point to start a whole food plant based diet. Like you, I was interested in the flavor reset, which made going to the wfpb way of life easier when I broke the potato fast. I lost weight fast on the taters and continued to lose weight on the wfpb way of eating but much faster on the taters. My theory on the getting cold part is that so much fluid and inflammation comes off of u that u are not running hot all the time. On days 2 and 3, I was pissing so much but not drinking any more water. I now follow the "starch solution" plan and mostly eat UNPROCESSED starches like beans, rice, and more potatoes.
Potatoes calm my digestion with their prebiotic fiber. They also lower my A1C. I'm trying to stay low-oil or no-oil as a diabetic, as fat/oil keeps my blood sugar high. Staying on high starch (potatoes, rice, oats) and veggies has allowed me to lose weight. There is a small amount of oil in a plant-based diet. I use the potato water (after boiling potatoes) in my vegetable soup. I respect your persistence in staying on unseasoned potatoes for 5 days. I think some would appreciate pepper and a little salt, especially as potatoes have potassium to balance the sodium.
I'm trying to swap all my carbs to potatoes instead of bread, rice and oats. Whilst I only ever have wholemeal bread I found it was never that filling and the calories were off the scale. Every day I stick to potatoes (as well as green veg and some lean protein), I'm less hungry, bloated and I'm getting a lot leaner
I'm committed to begin my potato reset journey starting tomorrow. I attempted in the past, but barely lasted a day or so. I'm not going to quit this time. I'm doing this for two reasons: to conquer food addiction and to drastically improve my health. I'll try not to focus on weight loss as that's going to follow anyway. There is no question Dr. McDougall has helped many people. Early research on the potato diet dates back to at least 1920. The only problem I have with McDougall is that he shames people for eating meat/fish. Funny thing…his science is dead right but he and his wife look at least 15 years older than they are. Is it their genetics or following a diet with no oil? Bottom line: his “diet” saves lives and gets people out of pain. Tough to argue with that!
You may have explained it at some point in the video and I may have missed it, but would there be any downside to include any other natural, non-processed, unsalted plant foods into the diet (e.g., berries, nuts, cooked lentils etc.)? All the reasons for the potato diet (resetting one's taste experience, gut health etc.) should apply to them as well.
I think the only downside to doing that is that it makes it harder to detect food intolerances. You may respond negatively to something and never removing it entirely will make that harder to detect. Also, an interesting aspect of the potato diet is that it takes all decision making about food out of the equation.

I like this "Mr. Potato" reset. I'd give it a try.
Just the other day, I was remembering how I enjoyed potatoes, carrots, and onions, seasoned, offcourse. I WILL try it. If I would exercise all your work, I would be a billion aire. I plan to sit down and read every email you have sent me and start implementing. This time yet year, my people could be calling your people.
will it reset my gut if i use salt ? what if i use both salt and butter? what if i also follow it witha glass of milk and what about cheese and dhives and bacon and why not eat ...will it reset my gut if i just have potoes at every meal? I could easily do that for life.
I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer to this. It's not that the potatoes do something magical for your gut. The benefits come largely from cutting everything else out. Most people are eating things regularly that are actually really bad for them. The potato reset gives your gut a rest and chance to repair. Are cheese and milk and bacon good for you? I don't know, but by doing a reset and slowly adding foods back in you can find out.
No need to eat bland potatoes. I eat it with broccoli and add a small scoop of cottage cheese and garlic...lost 5 pds in 10 days with moderate exercise; on day 22 and now down 9 pds total.. I'm now almost at my ideal weight..
Potatoes are an amazing food to do a mono cleanse with, but you definitely need to eat enough of them 🙈 there are so many ways to cook them, you don’t just have to boil them. You can steam them, roast them, mash them, and do that without any oil too
@@PInk77W1 personally I think it depends on your situation, if it’s going to help you eat enough and eat healthy then I think it’s fine as long as you eat things cooked in different ways as well x
Why boiling? Doesn't boiling take out a lot of the nutrients and you are throwing away those nutrients with the water you discard? Wouldn't the healthiest way to consume these potatoes be baked potato? Or simply the baked potato setting on a microwave?
Anyone interested in this should look up 'Kevin Smith interview with Joe Rogan potato diet' he talks about the potato diet and he lost tons of weight doing the potato diet, and he lost more weight afterword. It's great motivation to try the diet.
I've been having gut discomfort lately, so I might give this a try. (Organic potatoes only.) I hear Penn Gillette jump-started his massive weight loss with a 2-week potato diet. I've bee tinkering with Tim Ferriss's 4-Hour Body diet. I'd love to hear your take on it.
I think it's worth trying! The potato reset, that is. I can't remember the details of Tim's diet. Too long ago that I read the book. I'll revisit it, though.
I've been seeing a lot of people look at comments about small weight loss over a few months, and scoffing at them, "Only 40 lbs in 6 months?" but that's a lot more weight than they would've lost had they not done the diet. You likely won't lose 20lbs a month on any diet, you'd need to be exercising a lot, alongside practically fasting, to lose 20lbs a month. With this, you eat your fill, you don't starve your body of carbs and protein, and you end up changing your outlook on foods in a way that no longer requires you to exert will to constantly avoid picking up overly stimulating foods. That'd be enough on its own, the weight loss is just a perk of correcting your outlook on food, but once you've done so you can go back to using seasoning, eating chicken and different things, so long as you pick "bland" foods to season and eat instead of going straight back to pizza.
Great challenge, and a great report of how it all effected you. I have never had the desire to eat only potatoes as a stimulant challenge, but think I could have used it back when I was binging and eating compulsively. Seems like my whole life has been about food, fat, dieting, etc. Now, I let myself be focused on health which includes meal prep, and eating. I just look at it differently. That dirty little monster is still in me waiting to be awakened, but now I know to eat enough and make sure I get the foods that keep me satiated. Starches. I do prepare my meals salt, oil, and sugar free to avoid those stimulants, but allow some added salt at the table, if the food is too bland. Funny how things change, though. I usually don't want it. Thanks for the video.
I eat lots of potatoes. I actually have to limit my intake because I CAN eat too many (just spuds). At one point I was eating over 5LBS a day. I love them I can taste the difference between the spuds (same verity) at different times of the year.
Me and my husband ate only potatoes carrots spinach and steak and beef every day and potatoes was a big part of our plate and we was SUPER FIT. I LOVE POTATOES! I can eat potatoes only for the rest of my life. I am definitely doing this very soon. Right now i am doing potatoes and nuts only until dinner and I love it, I do not feel like over eating and I feel great. I think I can live off potatoes all day until dinner for the rest of my life.
Never heard of a potato diet til i came across this video. Since i'm Irish i'll give it a try, with salt & other seasonings. Even though we grow great spuds here, i couldn't eat them naked. (Spuds, not me in nude)
@@shane.melaugh that's true I tried for just over a day and stopped with potatoes only cause I had bad problem to go toilet.so Im back to my whole foods
I have done a version of potato hack. Not particularly just eating potatoes, but it was the main product of my dishes (breakfast, lunch and dinner). And, to my understanding, I had the similar effects of helping with reset guts and digestion. In fact, it help me so much that I felt healthy and more energetic. I'm not entirely sure about losing weight, but I'll be trying that soon as I've derail my healthy meals due to work.
Hey Shane, I got a suggestion for an ikario experiment: Do a no caffeine experiment. No coffee, no green, black or white tea, no energy drinks no stimulating substances at all. I’m doing this right now and I’m on day 37 of my 90 days no caffeine challenge. I feel terrible and I’m slowly realizing how caffeine messed me up without realizing it. It’s almost like recovering from a long illness. Due to the fact that you and the ikario team are sharing your struggles, your health issues and challenges here (I deeply appreciate that) I know that some of you suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, muscles stiffness and depressive states. I know that these symptoms are often caused by many factors but they all can be related to caffeine consumption, so I think it might be worth your efforts. I’m suffering from all of these issues too a degree and now I’m experiencing a relieve from them without the caffeine. I know for sure that I’m not alone with this and many people don’t even realize how bad this caffeine addiction can be so it might be helpful for some people to get your take on this topic… For obvious reasons this cannot be a short 7 day challenge and it’s likely that it will be a terrible and unproductive time for some weeks….or maybe months so I understand any possible reluctances. (please read this with a light hearted sense of humor) But in the name of personal development: 1. If you guys are caffeine addicts, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to function without any stimulating substances? 2. Which beverages do they feed you with in the human zoo and why? Maybe you can riff on these questions in the podcast with Ollie…. Thank you, Gregor
I love this suggestion, thank you! I'm a caffeine minimalist, but I haven't gone 100% caffeine free in a long time. And I think you're right: this may have effects on me that I'm not even aware of. I will definitely take on this challenge!
Interesting problem. You may be disconnected from your body's hunger and satiation signals. Doing a 24-48 hour fast might help. It can help us learn that there's a difference between feeling hungry and simply having an empty stomach. Also, it teaches us that just because we're hungry doesn't mean we HAVE TO eat right away.
This is awesome -- thanks for sharing your experiment and results. I am a sodium addict and just started low blood pressure medication. So, if this will make me fiend for carrots and celeries again, I'll give it a shot.
@@shane.melaugh I tried over the past 2 weeks. I think I ate more ketchup than 🥔. Lol 😂 definitely less sodium tho, so that’s a plus. Any suggestions to ween into the blandness?
@@panda007 I'm a jump straight in kinda guy. I think trying to take baby steps with something like this just makes it harder. Start by having bland potatoes and nothing else and embrace the experience.
Listen to guest Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan podcast episode #1037 talks about this very thing. I noticed you did not let your boiled potatoes cool which when you do this it creates more active Starches. Time stamp on this topic 1hr 5 minutes into the podcast.
Can someone explain to me why when I eat potatoes I gained weight every day,I tried this diet before and I weighed every day,I was gaining weight, what could have been the cause?
my understanding is, that potatoes come with a lot of potassium which aids weight loss. regarding the weight loss, i think it comes with a price to pay which means loss in lean mass as well. i try to do it for two days and then switch to a meat&eggs only diet for two days and restart with potatoes again. this way, i prevent lean mass loss. and, good idea, unseasoned and unsalted as well. we know that people on carnivore have a lot of success as well. but also not 100%. Cycling between the potato diet and the carnivore diet in a two-day rhythm might be something new and interesting and might combine the benefits of both diets without some of its drawbacks. one could come to the idea to combine potatoes and beef to a meal, it might taste great but it might stop working for weight loss because of a higher insulin level that blocks weight loss. think of the properties of a Japanese Damaskus knife with multiple layers of hard carbon steel and soft steel. if you would melt it together to a blended steel, it would result in something different.
Reset is awesome and oh sooooo boring but it kicks but healthwise I am going back on for 30 days I was losing 1 lb a day when I did the reset B4 ( Marys mini) I feel so good after being on it 4 a while I aloso heardly eat many spuds just Not hungry ALso got weak. This might sound crazy.. but I think it's good that Potatoes make you not want to eat food.. you're eating bc you have to. Food isn't supposed to be meant for "pleasure," but for fuel for the body.
It's pretty much calorie free and an appetite suppressant so I think it doesn't interfere with this experiment. Except maybe that it takes away from the destimulating factor a bit.
That's what I usually eat daily.. lots of boiled or baked potatoes with broccoli and peppers ((with some seasonings like chili/garlic/onion/cayenne powder added to the dish).
Haha, yess! I'm looking forward to hearing from your people. :)
But why no salt😐
Do they have to be boiled , can you microwave them? I find microwaving gives it a more harder desired more satisfying texture.
will it reset my gut if i use salt ? what if i use both salt and butter? what if i also follow it witha glass of milk and what about cheese and dhives and bacon and why not eat ...will it reset my gut if i just have potoes at every meal? I could easily do that for life.
I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer to this. It's not that the potatoes do something magical for your gut. The benefits come largely from cutting everything else out. Most people are eating things regularly that are actually really bad for them. The potato reset gives your gut a rest and chance to repair.
Are cheese and milk and bacon good for you? I don't know, but by doing a reset and slowly adding foods back in you can find out.
Research Dr Esselstyn.
No need to eat bland potatoes. I eat it with broccoli and add a small scoop of cottage cheese and garlic...lost 5 pds in 10 days with moderate exercise; on day 22 and now down 9 pds total.. I'm now almost at my ideal weight..
idk, that sounds like cheating. :)
but congrats on the weight loss! 💪
This sounds like a mcdougall plan ! Glad it works
Totally going to try this with my Husband and friends
Potatoes are an amazing food to do a mono cleanse with, but you definitely need to eat enough of them 🙈 there are so many ways to cook them, you don’t just have to boil them. You can steam them, roast them, mash them, and do that without any oil too
I definitely felt like it was tough to keep eating enough, after a few days. Just way less appetite than usual.
Is microwave bad or no big deal ?
Thx
@@PInk77W1 personally I think it depends on your situation, if it’s going to help you eat enough and eat healthy then I think it’s fine as long as you eat things cooked in different ways as well x
How do you think a five day potato reset with salt and oil would work out? Beneficial or not?
I'll add it to my bucket list... :-)
…which will never get done 😂😂😂
Why boiling? Doesn't boiling take out a lot of the nutrients and you are throwing away those nutrients with the water you discard? Wouldn't the healthiest way to consume these potatoes be baked potato? Or simply the baked potato setting on a microwave?
I didn't think of that! You might be right, maybe baked potato is even better for this experiment.
@@shane.melaugh if you didn't think about it how much of and "experiment" is it really?
solanine . NOT Boilling is dangeraus say many internet websites.
Shane, you had them also for breakfast or did you simply skip breakfast ?
I usually had my first meal around 11 to noon. But I basically ate whenever I felt hungry. Which was a lot less often than I expected.
I don’t think adding salt and pepper and other tasty spices would affect it.
I'm doing it... but I'm doing 3 days 😏 thank you very much.
Booo!
In all honesty, 3 days is already pretty tedious, so I don't blame you.
Anyone interested in this should look up 'Kevin Smith interview with Joe Rogan potato diet' he talks about the potato diet and he lost tons of weight doing the potato diet, and he lost more weight afterword. It's great motivation to try the diet.
Wow, hard experiment
0:14 what font do you use? Would be very happy for hearing.
Our title font is Spartan
@@shane.melaugh Thank you very much, I had already found out in the meantime :)
I am going to do a water fast, after that to break it can I go straight into the potato diet?
Is it only just white potatoes or mixing with potatoes with sweet potatoes?
I've been having gut discomfort lately, so I might give this a try. (Organic potatoes only.)
I hear Penn Gillette jump-started his massive weight loss with a 2-week potato diet.
I've bee tinkering with Tim Ferriss's 4-Hour Body diet. I'd love to hear your take on it.
I think it's worth trying! The potato reset, that is.
I can't remember the details of Tim's diet. Too long ago that I read the book. I'll revisit it, though.
It was 40 days
Carrots so good for gut
Thanks for your comment!
Great video!!! Thanks!!
Taters ?
@@joecamel6835 boring?
I eat lots of potatoes. I actually have to limit my intake because I CAN eat too many (just spuds). At one point I was eating over 5LBS a day. I love them I can taste the difference between the spuds (same verity) at different times of the year.
How do you prepare the potatoes?
@@chinazanwokolo4212 Usually in an instant pot.
@@salan3 boiled I assume?
Me and my husband ate only potatoes carrots spinach and steak and beef every day and potatoes was a big part of our plate and we was SUPER FIT. I LOVE POTATOES! I can eat potatoes only for the rest of my life. I am definitely doing this very soon. Right now i am doing potatoes and nuts only until dinner and I love it, I do not feel like over eating and I feel great. I think I can live off potatoes all day until dinner for the rest of my life.
Did you test your glucose at all?
I didn't, no. But I have acquired some glucose monitors that I will be using for future experiments. :)
I like adding a 1/2 stick of butter and some bacon.
Baked is best water just heats it up too quickly and kills most of the nutritional value
Comment for the algorithm. Interesting video!
Thank you!
Thank you n yes, I will start tomorrow
Gald you shared your experience with us
But where is the potato?
I will try it starting tomorrow 😊
Have you heard of Dr. McDougall potato diet ? Starch solution.
Taters ?
Never heard of a potato diet til i came across this video. Since i'm Irish i'll give it a try, with salt & other seasonings. Even though we grow great spuds here, i couldn't eat them naked. (Spuds, not me in nude)
I just started today but I'm having spice
Oohh, that's cheating! :P
@@shane.melaugh that's true
I tried for just over a day and stopped with potatoes only cause I had bad problem to go toilet.so Im back to my whole foods
I can handle baked potatoes but not boiled potatoes.
Unseasoned, they might be equally hard to handle. But the point of the experience is that it's boring, so it's all good. :D
Have u done mono eating bananas for a week
not including salt was a mistake.
isn't no salt dangerous?
Taters ?
I will try to do this
Hey Shane, I got a suggestion for an ikario experiment: Do a no caffeine experiment.
I know for sure that I’m not alone with this and many people don’t even realize how bad this caffeine addiction can be so it might be helpful for some people to get your take on this topic…
For obvious reasons this cannot be a short 7 day challenge and it’s likely that it will be a terrible and unproductive time for some weeks….or maybe months so I understand any possible reluctances.
(please read this with a light hearted sense of humor)
But in the name of personal development:
@@shane.melaugh Cool! I'm looking forward to this!
I have not drunk coffee and no tea in 3 years. I feel great
Zero caffeine finally makes you sleep like a log
Cool!
I can’t stop eating plain potatoes, why won’t they fill me up?
Interesting problem. You may be disconnected from your body's hunger and satiation signals.
Doing a 24-48 hour fast might help. It can help us learn that there's a difference between feeling hungry and simply having an empty stomach. Also, it teaches us that just because we're hungry doesn't mean we HAVE TO eat right away.
Did u lose any weight?
This is awesome -- thanks for sharing your experiment and results. I am a sodium addict and just started low blood pressure medication. So, if this will make me fiend for carrots and celeries again, I'll give it a shot.
Definitely worth a try!
@@panda007 you might want to look into the ingredients of ketchup.
Lots of sodium and sugar.
But that is not the real potato diet, you can eat oven cooked, air fry, with some no e starch vegetables,
Listen to guest Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan podcast episode #1037 talks about this very thing. I noticed you did not let your boiled potatoes cool which when you do this it creates more active Starches. Time stamp on this topic 1hr 5 minutes into the podcast.
Surprised you didn't turn into a potato mate!
I think turning into a potato doesn't happen until day 7.
Just have protein with your potatoes. You don't need to cycle between extreme diets, blending both is legitimately fine

I could see how doing a potato diet atleast part time can help reduce weekly calories
Now I can enjoy a spud all on its own I NEVER even wanted 2 look at a spud after mays mini that went on for almost 30 days i cheated and used salsa, ketchup or BBQ sauce this time none of that my goal is to lose so many lbs I HABE 2 4 my health then I am going on raw food veggies and fruit to keep all inflammation out of my body TU 4 the great video
potatoes are a good food. l can survive. seasoned lightly or eat it plain....it's all good for you
Salt has zero calories. If you are interested in weight loss, use salt. I haven't tried the potato diet but I am interested
I call it discipline
What a potato master.
To master the potato, you must become the potato.
Im also doing this but this first day im putting only a bit of pepper but the next days i promise its only bland
You could sprinkle some Himalayan salt on potatos.
No. Not if you’re trying to reset.
Basically, you did The Martian diet.
Hah! So true.
I ate posion ivy for five days, she didn't like that
I love eating baked potatoes for years but I eat them with shredded cheese and bacon bits I can't do bland🥔🍠
I live off potatoes for 6 years now.
this is the most Irish comment so far.
Darwin from Gumball would be proud.
Pointless to eat them bland. A little bit of seasoning will not hurt.
This might sound crazy.. but I think it's good that Potatoes make you not want to eat food.. you're eating bc you have to. Food isn't supposed to be meant for "pleasure," but for fuel for the body.
I mean, suit yourself, but I think food is one of the greatest pleasures life has to offer... AND it fuels your body.
@@shane.melaugh for sure. I'm just saying we can't lose sight of it's main purpose. A lot of people who are overweight picked pleasure over purpose.
Blaned??? Potato 🥔
Mean??? Plain potatoes 🥔??????
plain, as in no salt, no oil, no extra flavoring. just potatoes.

The Potatovore diet
Can I have black coffee
It's pretty much calorie free and an appetite suppressant so I think it doesn't interfere with this experiment. Except maybe that it takes away from the destimulating factor a bit.
i did it, only benefit was i saved money on food.
Haha, yeah. Taters are nice and cheap.
