We Are Entering a Golden Age / Dark Age of Online Content
Join my newsletter here: shanemelaugh.com/newsletter/
I've been having fun creating non-branded, non-niche and non-marketing content on this channel. This is an experiment in progress, but I do have a hunch that this is the way forward.
Today, I talk about my idea about building an intentional audience and about what it means to be an intentional content creator. We live in an era of increasingly competent AI generated content. Soon, it will be possible for anyone to create virtually unlimited, generic, AI content in any medium. What does this mean for the future of content creators. And maybe more importantly: what does it mean for the future of content consumption?
Let's dive into some bol...

    You are so brave! This change in direction was exactly what I've been feeling and it kept me from showing up enough... it felt like authenticity was so unappreciated that it discouraged me and pulled me back in to my shell... Now, I feel validated. It's okay for me to not want to 'entice' people, to not try to appease them or deceptively lure them onto my email list, or into my whatever creation... and ... I feel so relieved that I am not alone in my real interest: how to grow, heal, develop - as a human... and desiring fellow travellers on this path. I am glad I am already a subscriber bc I don't watch RUclips for its own sake, so I would miss out if I did not consciously choose what comes into my inbox... My inbox is sacred like my body, and I diligently keep it sooting, inspiring, and energising.

    I agree with you, Shane! I have thought the same about the future of content creation. In my opinion there will be a big demand for real, authentic content made by real, authentic people. And the demand will be from those people who want to be mindful consumers. So, they will be actually the highest quality leads/customers in overall. And about my own consuming habits I've noticed that I'm not following any social media platforms nowadays. Only being subscribed to certain amount of email lists (like yours) and then coming to see content here in RUclips, if it seems to be really interesting for me. And in RUclips I might check the latest videos from the channels that I'm following, but I don't want to see the general RUclips feed at all. And it's really so relieving to be off from the addictive social media environment! Thank you for deciding to focus on creating high quality content without the attempt to make it algorithm optimized :D

    Shane has always been a guy i've wanted to meet IRL, have a conversation with, and it's *precisely* because he's a genuine seeker, he really *does* want to improve things (himself, others), and he's explicitly concerned about his communication. So much to say here, but...YT comment section is NOT the place to have a conversation of any value at all...Mostly this: The new problem is NOT search -- we are /drowning/ in content (and most of it garbage) but rather "meta" search (as Shane points out) -- How do i find what i want/need/should engage with? How to avoid the doomscroll, consumer-mindset, short time horizon, "gives me the tingles" stuff? This meta-search problem will only grow over time -- How to find the good 10% from the 90% of dreck? Shane then self-corrects and says more like 99%..... How to THINK when the signal-to-noise ratio drops so low? Anyway....RUclips comment section lol...waste of time ...but i do wish Shane and his Merry Mean all the good luck with their goals -- I know he's the real deal.

    Well, the algorithm must have my number. I'm aligned with your thoughts. It's such a relief to me that authenticity is "trending" and sometimes amusing to see some folks "pivoting " to be more authentic. You've given me a lot to think about. I probably ought to curate my intake more carefully. I lean a little too heavily on entertainment. I keep it very real on my channel and am incapable of being overly polished. people are saying that I am posting things that they aren't seeing anywhere else and that is the greatest compliment I can imagine. I admit I started because I wanted to find alternative ways to monetize my art practice, to have the excuse to be generous for "free" (which is my default mode, to give it all away), and still be slightly paid for it. we'll see how it all turns out. Anyway, I enjoyed this video. Thank you for your thought-provoking predictions.

    • @shane.melaugh
      @shane.melaugh 3 дня назад

      Glad you found your way here! Indeed it's funny to consider a pivot towards authenticity. But I can see it in myself and in other creators I know: the incentives always pull you away from authenticity. It can be very difficult to resist that pull. It happens even unconsciously.

      I like what you are saying. And I hope being authentic and real will elevate content. Sadly, AI trains itself on available content. The more authentic and real we are, the more seemingly authentic and real AI will become. AI is like a child watching and learning from a parent. But you are right and I love your vibe. And I hope the good guys win in the end. P.S. Shane, I think I'm kinda trying to do the same thing within the coffee niche.

    • @shane.melaugh
      @shane.melaugh 4 дня назад

      @@CoffeeShowcase This might not happen, actually. Or at least, I think it will play out differently because: there's already a problem now with training AI models because so much of the content out there is AI generated. And AI models trained on AI content deteriorate rapidly. So the only way the more authentic content can be fed into the models is if there's a clear way to distinguish the authentic stuff from the AI stuff. Which means there'd be an effective "don't show me AI stuff" filter, which then changes the game again.

      @@shane.melaughThat’s an important insight. I definitely agree, however my concern is less about the frontier models than it is just other people scraping our original ideas and content, and using AI to chop it, mix it, and feed it to their audiences. I will say, “Audience from Scratch” is a significant help here. It’s not just the content, but the entire package, so to speak. But there is still the problem of other people stealing original ideas and content at scale and repackaging it. As for the deterioration, I don’t think we’ll see that in the frontier models. Companies like OpenAI can always revert to a previous model. But more importantly, I think the big AI companies have moved well beyond scraping the web, and are now deliberately chasing and making deals for proprietary data in specific fields, as well as synthesizing processes and workflow data (input data rather than output data). They’ve also moved in large part, beyond text and are tokenizing audio, video, movement through robot tele-operation, perhaps sensory data and who knows what else?

      @@wonmoreminute Interesting thoughts! I hadn't considered all of this. I'm really curious to see how things will play out. So the almighty AI knows, and might even have predicted that I write this comment. You present a very thoughtful approach to curating the input that ends forming your thoughts. Thanks for this. Do you know other content creators or sources that would educate teenagers about the importance of his?

      Thanks for your comment! Sometimes the algo does serve us well. I've found that on RUclips, I get good recommendations when I almost never visit. Like, once a week or less. Regarding your question about sources for teenagers, @struthless comes to mind. Also I would say that the documentary The Social Dilemma is required viewing. A good way to understand the basics. I also generally believe that the kids will be alright. Being addicted to a little screen is super cringe and I don't think younger generations will do it as much as millennials. They'll probably find something even worse lol

  • @PABLOVALENTE
    @PABLOVALENTE 4 дня назад

    Engagement is "interacting by getting attention." AI is getting better and better at it, and it doesn't matter who or what creates the content as long as it gets your attention. However, what will differentiate or stand out from the crowd will be "original content created by humans," and the problem will be demonstrating that it's made by humans.

    • @shane.melaugh
      @shane.melaugh 4 дня назад

      I wonder how this will play out. It could be that there is an authenticity gap that AI will struggle to cross for a long time. But right now it's hard to tell because so much human created media is actually algorithmic media as well. E.g. the typical Netflix movie isn't really a product of humans, it's the product of analytics.

      I think so, yes. Apparently, it makes a huge difference. Asking for likes gets way more likes. Although I suspect that the most dramatic case studies on this come from content that is made for very young kids. And a lot of "how to succeed on youtube" stuff really comes down to how to make content for young kids because that's the majority of the audience. So even when I see stats about these things, I take them with a grain of salt. I do believe that having subscribers who don't watch your content a lot does more harm than good.

    Reminds me of my boss praising me for handling stress extraordinary well. My thoughts were "That's because I just don't give a f...!": When we have a deadline I just talk with my colleges about priorities and I try to optimise my workflow before I start. Then I just continue working, but it doesn't matter to me wether I can accomplish all goals in time or not. I know I did everything I could. And in the end it's not my company (and therefore not my problem). A missed deadline is usually manageable. Life will go on.

      @@caioscofield ah, I see. My experience of this is that motivation/drive are also free of tension. I'm driven to create things, for example, and it really takes no extra effort or tension. That motivation is just there. In fact, it seems to be there whether I like it or not.

    Yay, finally some productivity advice acknowledging this - against all the "no pain no gain" brainwashing we see ;). As a chronically over-tensed person I discovered the concept of "letting go of unnecessary tension" through bodywork. I am a former professional dancer and it makes so much sense. E.g. Strala Yoga is building on this principle and I love how you can practise "letting go in order to accomplish more" on the mat. Gives an awesome reference point for real life & work. Shane, I would be very interested in the meditation practice you talk about!

    Great video, I've been struggling to come up with a suitable analogy to use with my running coaching clients to explain why they should "let go" of the outcome of a race as it ads unnecessary tension. Your "trying to sleep" example fits the bill very well. I will borrow that. Also interested in a guided meditation on letting go of trying.

      I hope it helps! I think performing at a competition is an especially interesting case for this. It suggests to us very strongly that we have to "try", when in a way, all we can do is show up with the current level of training.

    Very good video elaborating on the concept of emotional regulation that is scientifically recognized that this is the number 1 cause of procrastination. people don't avoid tasks, they avoid the feelings they attach to the task. the moment people can find calm in regard of the task, procrastination disappears.

    Overall, a very interesting topic! But there's one thing I don't really understand. Clearly, there is a correlation bewteen well-being and the "flow-state". But how can we make the assumption that the "flow-state" would cause the well-being and not the other way around? It could even be argued that it would make more sense to have it the other way around, that general well-being would cause more frequent "flow-states". Maybe there's more to the source that you displayed in the video that I'm missing here?

    • @shane.melaugh
      @shane.melaugh 19 дней назад

      That's a great question! I don't know if this has been studied formally, but my understanding is this: there's been a bunch of research into flow states and what triggers them. Or more precisely: what conditions make flow states more likely to occur. And from that research, it seems that general well being is not a major factor. Flow state triggers are things like: clear, direct feedback, challenge level matched to skill level, clarity about the task at hand, no distractions, a sense of autonomy etc. Of course, there's going to be a causation from well being to flow at some point. Presumably, if you're deeply depressed, that makes it harder to access flow states, for example. But from my understanding (and also my personal experience), within a pretty wide range, general well being doesn't seem to impact flow states as much as the other way around.

    Yes, it seems to be counter-intuitive, but it's true. If it's hard to let go, you can "just let it be ... " without engaging, and eventually loose interest. Do you know Jamie Smart's book "Clarity: Clear Mind, Better Performance, Bigger Results"? It speaks to this phenomenon.

    Yes, the mess, the discomfort, the unpredictability of Life /Nature... I feel like we, humans, got really spooked by nature's discomfort and the pain of loss it entailed... it still feels scary when the winds blow harshly and the lightning strikes, when the rivers flood, and the earth quakes... we seem to be sensitive 'instruments'... so we started creating more and more protection /safety for ourselves... we wanted safer shelters, more consistent food supply... understandable... so, I do have compassion for us... but... I feel that we are invited to explore much deeper, to bow before Nature, and make friends w our own 'untamed' states and aspects... where 'boundaries' don't mean that there is no room for the chaos and mess of life, nature, and being human.

There was a part of me that could not imagine how I could keep growing and evolving if and when I market one version of myself to an audience...and I did not want to stop growing and evolving... I am still in this quest with the deeper quest of how to be a human, making sense of life, and especially close relationships... harmonious functioning of body, family, community... and I would love to be able to share my insights and discoveries w/o losing myself in the process... I hope it's possible. <3

      It must be possible. I believe there is a place for true authenticity. Perhaps part of the problem is that true authenticity is harder and scarier (because more vulnerable). That's why it's in a way tempting to lose oneself in a niche and in marketing concerns.
