    If this horse was here in Australia, I would call him a Waler. That is, draft infused hot blood (thoroughbred) ancestry, but not necessarily with papers. Maybe includes some Timor pony or brumby blood. Tough, smart, athletic and kind. I think he has been taught to do a minimal "shoulder-in", but not well taught as he isn't bending his spine to put his forefeet on a somewhat different track to his hindfeet. Done right, this movement elevates the back and engages the ring of muscle. It's foundational for dressage. He's not engaging his back at all at the start - but looks like something starts to happen towards the end of the video. Interesting. I look forward to seeing his progress.
    I fully endorse the comments re spurs - if the horse can tolerate them and get useful information from the rider from them, it's all good. In my view, they are NEVER used for punishment. There's a lot to the old tradition of earning your spurs - you don't get them until you can both ride properly AND have developed enough judgement to know when to use them appropriately.

    • @tracyjohnson5023
      @tracyjohnson5023 Год назад

      The Waler sounds like my kind of horse! I agree about the spurs, when used properly as an aid, makes your horse lighter to the leg without becoming dead sided.
      Love the analogy of earning your spurs.

    • @bettiehass4091
      @bettiehass4091 Год назад +1

      I have weaker legs due to a nerve problem and I use spurs to amplify my leg aids. I use side spurs so that I don’t have to turn my foot.

    I have no idea what breed this fella is. Imo he's built and moves like a walking horse/lighter draft cross. He doesn't appear gaited like a walking horse, but he walks much like one minus the swag roll. With the cross breeds like that 70% or more trot.
    Those type of crosses are usually built much heavier on the front, lighter in rear, long back. Their shoulders also come back farther like his that Tim noted in saddle fit part of video. That shoulder is why gaited tree saddles have more flare.
    Regardless of what his breed is, I think owner will be fighting an uphill battle doing anything beyond basic dressage with him due to his conformation. I was kinda surprised the horse didn't know how to do a simple leg yield.
